Subject: Undelivered Mail Returned to Sender

On mail to a few addresses I am getting:
550 Access denied - Invalid HELO name (See RFC2821 4.1.1.1) (in reply to MAIL FROM
command)
I have multiple domains hosted on my server so that my be part of the problem but I really do not know where to go from here.
Any help would be appreciated.

Hi kpcolo
Every domain needs an MX record. These MX records should point to FQDNs on your server. The FQDNs need to be fully configured, i.e. you need A and PTR records for every domain you host.
Kind regards

I keep getting "undelivered mail returned to sender" that comes with an attachment. i do not open the attachment but i get email returned from people that i have not emailed in years. I also have current people that tell me they receive email from me and there is nothing on the email and it is a repetative thing for them and for me. I have scanned my computer and it keeps telling me there are no viruses but i keep getting these emails. can anyone help me please!

Someone is probably sending spam with your address forged on the To: line.  Could be one of your old contacts with a Windows machine has a virus that's doing it.  It's also possible your e-mail account has been hacked, though I'd think such a hacker would be a bit more purposeful.

  • 'Undeliverable Mail Return To Sender' spam?

As of late, we have been getting 'undeliverable mail' which appears to be spam. The long headers appear to indicate that it is indeed coming from our mail server and the body of the message goes something like this:

...and there is generally a spamish content underneath.
    Has anyone encountered this?
I thought perhaps that somehow others were able to use my mail cue, but I closed the firewall for SMTP mail to only favourable IPs. However, when I look at my mail cue, I see a bunch of things waiting to be sent out. They appear to be a bunch of spam that the server trying to return. The cue would typically have this message:
    Message ID: 266692764C8
    Date: Thu Dec 21 13:31:52
    Size: 6742
    Sender: MAILER-DAEMON
    Recipient(s) & Status:
    [email protected]:
connect to wc.wachovia.com[169.200.182.108]: Operation timed out
It appears that the server is trying to return spammed mail to sender and it is timing out. I am not sure, though. This would not make sense since I have spam being redirected to a separate spam_depot account.
Any ideas on how to figure this one out?

I can't tell you if this is a wise decision for your setup, you need to make that call.
You are getting into settings which stray far from the GUI and the support of Apple, venture forward carefully..
The comments within the amavisd.conf file and threads in this forum contain most/all of what you may require. Spend time reviewing the config file. all of it's options, the flow of amavis (well documented) and how amavis links to postfix...... then out of thousands of possible configurations you can make the decision of what is best for your server.
Some hints... (which were documented in an earlier thread)
The GUI sets tag2 and sakill_leveldflt the same:
    $sakill_leveldeflt = $satag2_leveldeflt;
You can change this so that one set of actions is performed at tag2 and a more extreme action at the kill level. something like this works well for a well trained server:
    $satag2_leveldeflt = 3.0
    $sakill_leveldeflt = 6.0;
When the kill level is reached, the finalspamdestiny action is performed. If you bounce or reject, you will generate bounces in your queue. If you discard, the no bounce is generated. Even if you discard, you still have a quarantine.
The default is to quarantine the spam as files in /var/virusmails Many people never look in this folder, and it can easily fill-up. Look in your settings for something like this:
    $QUARANTINEDIR = '/var/virusmails';
    you can comment this to:
    #$QUARANTINEDIR = '/var/virusmails';
to disable the quarantining to a directory.
You can quarantine to an email address, read the file, it's pretty clear.
Take the time to read through the file. Make changes one at a time and allow plenty of testing between changes. Make any files you change. Be sure to stop/start mail service to activate changes.

  • Group Email-Undelivered Mail

I have various groups setup up on our server with users added. When I send an email to the group the members of that group are receiving my message, so I believe I have the correct settings for group emails.
The problem I'm having is that after a few weeks mail stops being forwarded to the recipients in the group and gets returned as "Undelivered Mail Return to Sender". I can get everything working again if I stop the Web service and then restart it.
This problem is driving me crazy as I cannot locate what might be the cause. Any help would be great.
    Thanks

I guess you might be using the wiki group email feature ? or a script that goes through the groups you have setup and builds an alias database ?

Try turning the account off and on : Settings > Mail, Contacts, Calendars , then tap the account on the right, slide Mail to 'off', exit settings and go back into the Mail app, and then go back to Settings and slide Mail back to 'on'
If that doesn't work then try closing the Mail app completely : from the home screen (i.e. not with the Mail app 'open' on-screen) double-click the home button to bring up the taskbar, then press and hold any of the apps on the taskbar for a couple of seconds or so until they start shaking, then press the '-' in the top left of the Mail app to close it, and touch any part of the screen above the taskbar so as to stop the shaking and close the taskbar.
Also do a reset : press and hold both the sleep and home buttons for about 10 to 15 seconds (ignore the red slider), after which the Apple logo should appear - you won't lose any content, it's the iPad equivalent of a reboot.

I have deleted the item multiple times both on my Mac mini and my touch and 5 minutes later it is back in my Junk mailbox.  The item will not return to the Junk mailbox until it is deleted from the trash.

    You can create a Rule

Since I installed Lion I miss very much the possibility to return a mail to the sender. I wonder if it there´s any way to do it now.

Personally, I don't understand the obsession with Bounce. I guess it just feels good to do it.
Anyway, there are methods out there for simulating bounce. For example:

  • Undelivered mail question

If anyone can give me an answer, I'd be absolutely grateful!  I had Exchange Online account for about a year, with three users, and cancelled in December.  I migrated my email back to our web host (Network solutions) and everything was great.  About
a week ago people started receiving undelivered mail messages when they sent me an email.  I always received their emails but they received the following message:

When you say "wrong receiver" do you mean an address that does not exist in the domain you sent the mail to?
If so, there is no way for you to check that when you send the mail, and you will not get an exception. It is possible that the domain's e-mail server may send a "bounce" message back to your server to tell you that the address does not exist there, but that happens later and there is no guarantee it will happen at all.

  • Emails showing different subject to mail headers

My mail provider is gmail via IMAP, and I connect to this via the mail application.
Until recently all was good with the world.
Now I randomly get a mismatch between the mail sender, the subject that is listed for the mail and the actual email that is shown.
To give an example. if I received two emails from the same person within a few hours, the first email would have the correct sender but either the wrong subject or email body or both and the second email would have the reverse. So the only part that mail is getting right is the sender, the rest is mismatched.
When I look in more details at the email headers via > Mail>View>Message>All Headers the correct Subject is listed in the headers but a combination of the wrong subject appearing in the preview and the wrong actual email are the manifestation of the problem.
    Some additional info.
In Mail, I have multiple folders, and total mail volume is plus 6GB.
What have I done up till now to fix the problem
    1. Mailbox rebuild; done multiple times, and whilst this does fix the problem for a short time, within 24 hours it reoccurs with different messages (random). Problem with this fix is its temporary and rebuilding your  mailbox multiple times is a pain.
    2. Removal of account from Mail and rebuild. again this is a temporary fix and whislt this does fix the problem for a short time, within 24 hours it reoccurs with different messages (again random).
    3. Total removal of the mail account from mail and deletion of all the associated mail files in the ~/Library/<user>/Maildata/V2.... folder followed by a full import of the mail from scratch. This one is a bit more interesting. The occurrence of the problem seems to be on the newest mail. With this method all mail rules/filters had also been deleted before the resync of mail, hence ruling out the filters as a possible source of the issue. But again randomly mail would be incorrectly listed with the wrong subject.
Why is this a pain, I'll add this just to get everything down on this listing.
So an email client that get one third of the tasks it meant to handle isn't really an email client at all, its a mail transformer and not in a good way, more of a random deceptacon kind of way and its highly infuriating. I have seen various listings about similar problems to this but mostly they seem to be solved by mailbox rebuilding of the mail indexes etc etc. These aren't permanent fixes for this problem and I would be very interested to hear if anyone has similar and has actually fixed this, or are people simply waiting for a fix in the next upgrade of mail in yosemite? or is these something more going on between mail and the interaction with gmail?
    Comments welcome.

    Kfir,
I guess you've implemented a mapping to create the target email ? If so, you could a feature to build the subject depending on a source message context (field value ? sender ? etc) ...
Otherwise, you may play with dir objects (intf determination for instance) to use different mappings (so diff. subjects) to create target mail (depending on sender/receiver etc) ...
    Rgds
    Chris

  • None of your e-mail accounts could send to this recipient

One of our users is having a very strange issue where when he sends email to SMTP recipients he gets an immediate NDR stating "None of your e-mail accounts could send to this recipient" and the from field of the email is blank if you look in sent items.  I've seen the KB article http://support.microsoft.com/kb/872896 but it doesn't apply.
    we're running Exchange Server 2003 SP2
user is running Outlook 2007 SP1 from multiple computers in cached mode
user has this issue intermittently from all 3 machines... there seems to be no pattern.
something additional that I've noticed about the emails in the sent items that produce NDRs is that if I double-click the email address in the To field there is a custom email type of "S" specified instead of SMTP which of course isn't custom.  This is surely the reason for the NDR since our exchagne server has no way to route type "S" email messages but the user isn't typing this in and the contacts he's using are correctly set to type "SMTP"
    Has anyone seen this before?
    Miles

I find this happens fairly regularly but intermittently, almost always to new email addresses that aren't in the users contacts list. I suspected that our users are clicking the 'mailto' link when replying but deleting the autocomplete entry doesn't resolve
it and it's even happened when it's a new message (not replied or forwarded) to someone the user hasn't emailed before. Generally, if we try again after a few hours then the email will eventually send but it's very frustrating.
A couple  of our users reported that it was happening to them so I enabled Outlook logging to try and get to the bottom of it, here's the results of one of the log files (they're both pretty much the same)

  • Strange mail behaviour - message sender and title do not match message

We have a copy of mail behaving oddly - within the last 2 days 2 messages have been delivered to the inbox (on an exchange account), where on opening the message the text of the message does not match the sender and subject. Mail seems to be moving/deleting/not showing the corrent email content and showing the content of another email from months ago from someone else instead.
Logging into the exchange server direct (through safari) gives the correct message content, which leads me to believe it's Mail going wrong.
powerbook G4 Mac OS X (10.4.8) all updates run

Strange one - sounds like the beginningof what could be a major problem as Mail stores the messages in files which consist of a number with a .emix extension if they are getting mixed up then the file system is confused
You need to check what is stored in the emails on your drive
If the message is still in your Inbox then:
Your User folder / Library / Mail / and you file see several files and several folders (Mailboxes is where you have moved messages to, Signatures is self explanatory) you will also see depending on how many Accounts you have a folder which describes your account - open it -inside will be an Inbox folder - open it - open Messages and double click on one of the files. It should open in a small pane within Mail. Check that it has the correct information.
Come back I will wait for your reply

It's not a good idea to use a network disk for both Time Machine backups and other things.  By design Time Machine will eventually consume all the space on its output disk, which will then cause problem for your other files.  I'd store those other files on an external disk connected to the Time Capsule.  The problem with that is that Time Machine will only back up files that are local to your Mac.  That means that you'll only have one copy of the files on or attached to your Time Capsule.
By the way, you've been misled by poor field labeling on this forum into typing a large part of your message into the field intended for the subject.  In the future just type a short summary of your post into that field and type the whole message into the field below that.
