Submit On Quick Pick

Apex 3.2
I have a quick pick set up using the following.
In page HTML Header
<script type="text/javascript">
function setTheValue(id,val)
{ obj = document.getElementById
(id); obj.value = val; }
</script>In the Pre Element Text of quick pick I have
<a title="Quickly select Yes"
href="Javascript:setTheValue
('P20_ITEM_1', 'Y');">Yes</a>
{CODE}
<a title="Quickly select No"
href="Javascript:setTheValue
('P20_ITEM_1', 'N');">No</a>
<a title="Quickly select NULL"
href="Javascript:setTheValue ('P20_ITEM_1', 'NULL');">Null</a>The quick pick works but I need to be able to submit the page, whenever P20_ITEM_1 is changed.
I have tried using
.submit()in several places, but just can't seem to get it to work

It is doSubmit();

doSubmit();
</script>
