Submitting Sitemaps

My site was made in Muse and is hosted with Business Catalyst. I now want to submit a sitemap to Google using the Google webmaster tools. I can create a sitemap using third party tools like XML Sitemaps Generator. But now I'm supposed to upload the file to the "root directory." How do I do this with this scenario when I am publishing directly from muse?

Hello SarahSchwartz,
You can login to your admin console of your site, for example you own domain.com, then you need to go to domain.com/admin and log in with your ID & password. Then you can click on the "Help & Support" link on the top right corner and in the opening page scroll to the bottom where you will find the "FTP Configuration" settings.
More helpful details in the KB related to this matter from BC: http://kb.worldsecuresystems.com/153/bc_153.html
Make sure to first log in into the admin console and just then through FTP.
Cheers,
Cristian

  • Submitting Sitemap to Google

Hi everyone, I just watched a lynda.com video which said to submit a sitemap to Google, all you needed to do was add sitemap.xml after the web address (in the appropriate box, within Google Webmaster Tools, in add a sitemap screen) and Google would be able to find it.  When I did that, I got an error saying Google couldn't find it.
I've done the websites in question in Muse and they are hosted through Business Catalyst.
Is there another way to do that?
    Thank you,
    Annette

Both the sites are over an year old by creation date. Earlier in those days, site admins could easily disable the sitemap from their admin panel. The option is still there but is not directly accessible so that the user doesn't disable the option by mistake. For all new sites you create in BC now, sitemap.xml is enabled by default (and with the disable option hidden) so its quite unlikely that you would make this mistake.

  • Adobe Muse - submitting sitemap error

    Good morning,
I am having an issue when trying to submit a sitemap to Google Webmaster Tools - It is coming back with the error 'Network unreachable: robots.txt unreachableWe were unable to crawl your Sitemap because we found a robots.txt file at the root of your site but were unable to download it. Please ensure that it is accessible or remove it completely.'
I don't have a robots.txt file in my folder so I'm not sure what's going on...
    Thanks in advance,
    Tom.

Hi Tom, sorry for the delay
I found some known issue for these errors, according to google webmaster tools
This can happen when Googlebot encounters a time-out or other network related issue when requesting a file from your site, and thus is forced to abandon the request. This can be caused by one or more of the following:
Excessive page load times due to dynamic pages taking too long to respond
Excessive page load times due to a site's hosting server being down, overloaded, or misconfigured
The hosting server is blocking Google's web-crawler
    A DNS configuration issue.
in short, ask our host, to make sure robots.txt file is not restricted. Also confirm, make sure you have robots.txt for each site.
I was unable to access this file for any site above. So either it is restricted or does not exist.
Do let me know if you have any question.

  • Help submitting sitemap to Google

I'm trying to submit the sitemap for my Muse site using Google webmaster tools.
Each time I submit the sitemap I get an error message that the "URL is not allowed" and "This url is not allowed for a Sitemap at this location." The sitemap that's automatically generated by Business Catalyst is using the site.businesscatalyst.com domain instead of my default domain name and it's causing an error.
Does anyone know what's happening here?
    Thanks!

Have you upgraded your BC site and added your domain to the site as well? Please refer this two part tutorial here: http://www.adobekb.com/launching_pt01.html and http://www.adobekb.com/launching_pt02.html
Once you have added the domain to your site and redelegated your domain to BC (to connect your domain name and your BC site), you can submit http://www.mysite.com/sitemap.xml to Google Webmaster Tools and Google will be able to access the same.
If you can share your site domain name and your BC site URL, it would provide us with some information to investigate and confirm status of your domain and site.

  • How to create an xml sitemap

I was asked to create a sitemap for one site and I had to do it the hard way. I had to upload the site, went to an online xml sitemap generator, generate the xml file and upload it.
But I was wondering whether DW has an option to generate an xml sitemap of the site offline?

  • Blog and personal domain/store, SEO & other issues

I'm using the blog format to provide helpful tips, dynamic content and general marketing for our online store. The .Mac points to a subdomain, not directly to the site and the content can be viewed through the store pages in a frame (GoLive). I've submitted sitemaps to google for both the store site and blog subdomain and many questions, lots of uncertainity and variable scenarios on this and .Mac versus maybe better SEO friendly options like Wordpress and .Mac's general sluggishness. I like the ease of updating with .Mac and the main reason I have taken the .Mac to personal domain approach was the Search capability.
    1) Is there a way using GoLive or 3rd party option to search for blog content if I simply Published to folder and upload content & pages in the site versus the personal domain approach?
    2) If I update blog content directly to the site, what other steps aside from, resubmitting the sitemap to Google are good SEO practices?
    3) How does the blog via subdomain sitemap/Google content get crawled? So far the visible links appear to correlate to 'Number of Excerpts to Show'. plus the main blog page and archive page. Will submitting the sitemap in a particular level of the blog folders affect the crawling to maximize content discovery?
    4) Does having content in a frame from the subdomain from a .Mac account affect SEO & possibly get into Duplication of Content issues?
    5) Probably more questions to follow depending on logical direction and tweaks...
Any insights, input or tweak suggestions are appreciated.
    Thanks!

    Another question:
    6) Is there a method to create a sitemap of Blog entry links that you can post on a site? This and other navigation issues are a bit difficult, AFAIK.

  • Google warning help

I'm getting the following warning from google after submitting sitemaps for my websites. 'URLs not followed
When we tested a sample of URLs from your Sitemap, we found that some URLs redirect to other locations. We recommend that your Sitemap contain URLs that point to the final destination (the redirect target) instead of redirecting to another URL'
I'm using the RAGE sitemap tool to build and submit my sitemap. Can anyone advise what may cause this warning or how I may be able to remedy this so that Google is my friend again?

Where are you publishing to - MobileMe or another server?
Is your URL a redirect to MobileMe and, if so, is it done by Cname or masking?
Are you using the default iWeb navigation?
Where did you upload your sitemap to and what URL did you give to Google?
Did you test that your sitemap was in the correct location on your server?

  • How often are sitemaps submitted by BC? And to where?

    My Client asks:
    Jeff,
Previously we spoke when you transferred ourdomain to Adobe and I was under the impression that the SEO was done auto by ADobe. At that time i instructed my SEO guy to discontinue submitting the site to search engines so I would not be duplicating the submissions.
Please confirm that the adobe is routinely submitting to the major search engines ie google, bing, etc
    Please let me know..
    Which Search engines?
The frequency of submission? ( ie. weakly, monthly or how often ?
    Thanks

    Hi Jeff,
That really is a load of nonsense at the end of the day.
There is a lot to SEO but there is one basic principle...
Search engines send out search bots that crawl websites. They come across this in a variety of ways (more later). At your site it looks for all the information/points and ranks you accordingly.
A search bot can come across you via a link on another website or through registration or knowledge that you exist. So having external links or registering the site with web master tools etc.
In terms of crawling your site and the rate it does that can be based on having web master tools and other natural factors like dynamic content, new link linked to an article or blog post etc.
To aide a bot with going through your site you do your internal SEO of course so it has a nice easy job of it, set up robots.txt and of course sitemap.xml and so on.
The sitemap is updated overnight so basically every day.

  • Submitting site maps for multiple sites to Google

I sort of glommed on to the end of the thread "meta and google-ing...i give up," but I'll start a fresh post here with this:
I have three sites in iWeb, all of which have their own registered Go Daddy domain names and are forwarded to .mac without masking. I followed James Tseng's instructions and successfully submitted to Google and verified my "www.mac.com/user/iWeb" url.
I also successfully uploaded a site map for one of my sites (let's just call it Site 1), which is in my iWeb folder (not the Site 1 folder).
My question: I assume I can create separate site maps for Sites 2 and 3. Do they also go in the same iWeb folder as the first one? Is that possible if they're all named "sitemap.xml" or do they have to be given different names?
Also... if I want to submit these three sites to other engines like MSN and Yahoo, can I submit the forwarded domain names, or will these engines not follow the forwarding to my .mac url?
If that's the case, is it best to submit the single "www.mac.com/user/iWeb url" as I did with Google, or should I submit each site's .mac url separately?
Thanks in advance for your help!
    Mitch

<As posted in the the other thread...>
    Hi Mitch....
I hope you've been finding all this helpful so far! It's always fun to see just how much feedback you can get from Google. Sort of gives you a feeling that "you've arrived". haha.
Regarding your question about sitemaps and multiple sites.... My strategy is this... I like to give Google sort of the broadest catch that I can. That's why I really suggest to people that they register the most general URL... http://web.mac.com/username/iWeb/ . You see how that really leaves the door open for the possibility of multiple sites, without having to register multiple sites. Google really doesn't care that you call them separate sites...to Google they appear as part of the same site...with the same base verified URL.
So with that registered URL, there really is only one place where the verification file and sitemap.xml file can go. And that place is in the iDisk/Web/Sites/iWeb/ folder. And there is really only a need for a single verification file and a single sitemap.xml file, no matter how many sites you have. The point here isn't telling Google that you have more sites...it's just about telling Google that you have more LINKS in the site that it already knows about.
So how do you do this? Just spider your new site or gather the links in your own way and then copy and paste the links (just the links section...not the first two lines or the last line of the code) into the sitemap.xml file that you have already submitted before. Then resubmit it to Google.
Does this make sense? Let me know what you think.

  • I've used a sitemap generator, download the file. How do I open it?

    Hello
I've textwrangler, textedit and office. They open the file, but to save it as a sitemap.xml is not working. When I preview it online the code is not rendering.
Which software do I use to open this file and save as plain sitemap.xml to upload to my host and submit to the search engines.
By the way, preferably a really free software, not a trial one since I've no money to buy one+pointless to buy one to use only once.
    Thank you

    Hello
I'll try to explain myself better. With either sitemap generators I'm using online:
    http://www.sitemapdoc.com
    http://www.xml-sitemaps.com/
They build the sitemap nicely. I don't need to edit it, just download or copy the code and save as xml.
When I download the code, it has the Final Cut (I've it installed) as the open the file as default.
I'm assuming it is happening since I do not have a suitable software to open and save the file with.
There are endless sitemap generators online, but I've to save them as sitemap.xml and upload to my host, to submit it to the search engines.
It is not a new process, I do believe that they start this way of submitting your website about 3/4 years ago.
I did not use iWeb to build my website since it uses iFrame.
The softwares you mentioned above are not free and I don't need to edit my Sitemap.
Only to save it as Sitemap.xml and upload to my host.
I'm trying version tracker as recommended above, but xml editors are not easy to use + plus most are trial software.
Doesn't mac have an application to open and save this kind of file?
Or maybe you could direct me to another forum where I could post my dumb question. Thank you.
    Regards

  • IWeb sitemap and Google search

I'm sorry, I mistakenly formerly entered this topic as a post on a previously answered question regarding Google Keywords. I have more questions on this topic.
    I have two questions:
    2. I have .mac and am using domain forwarding. I obtained and followed step by step instructions from iweb Faq - show up on Google. I obtained the sitemap and placed it in the Web/Site folder. When I check with Google webmaster tools, I get the following warning:
    URLs not followed
When we tested a sample of the URLs from your Sitemap, we found that some URLs were not accessible to Googlebot because they contained too many redirects. Please change the URLs in your Sitemap that redirect and replace them with the destination URL (the redirect target). All valid URLs will still be submitted.
    2. How do I refresh my iweb sitemap?
I'm a genuine newbie, and don't know anything about html.
    Thanks for any help.

Here's a couple of examples of links to other sites.....
    http://www.mirroroftheuniverse.com/Contact.html
    http://www.mirroroftheuniverse.com/Buy.html
These can be links to sites that you think would be of interest to your viewers, retail outlets and services related to your product.
Some of the links on the "Buy" page are there because these sites link to mine and the site owners have requested a link to theirs. This particular product is listed on 60+ sites so I can't possibly put them all in although, in a perfect world, I would take the time to do so!
Interlinking of websites is normally a reciprocal arrangement between site owners whose websites compliment each other but are not in direct competition.
