Submitting to film festivals, need BEST quality! iDVD the answer?

I'm submitting my short film to festivals and need to burn DVDs of it to send!
My short is in a .mov format (compressed at 1.63 GB). I burned a copy of it with iDVD and the quality was much worse than the compressed file's quality. Is there a better way to do it, or different application that would be a better choice?
Thanks so much for your help! I'm anxious to send my entries off as soon as possible.
Sasha

Get Roxio Toast 10 Titanium Pro. If I'm not mistaken it now also includes an excellent app called Fotomagico which is highly recommended on this iDvd forum. Essentially you get two GREAT apps for the price of one.

  • Final Cut Express movie or iDVD - need best quality

    I have tried various settings, rendering, and burning, and I am not satisfied with the quality of the iDVD burning of the FCE movie. I used an HD camcorder - looks awesome straight from camera to HD tv via hdmi plug. Movie loaded into computer via FCE and still looks good on browser and canvas. When I use File, Export, Quicktime Movie or Quicktime Conversion, to save the movie, the quality does not seem as good. Then in iDVD it doesn't get any better. What are the best settings on FCE and iDVD to make the best quality movie.

    Zak- from all that I've read, QT Movie is better than QT Conversion for quality - Correct?
    The FCE program supports the HD quality. When moving to iDVD, it seems Best Performance is the best quality. Are there any specific settings I need to do in iDVD, as there aren't many to choose from. I have a 3 1/2 hour movie set up in FCE with transitions, double video, editing, etc. I have split the movie so I can produce on 2 separate dvd's for best quality and I am using the 7.7 double layer dvd's to burn on. I have also put in photos, iphoto, that look perfect on the canvas of FCE in the movie, but when on idvd , even before i burn the dvd, the pictures lose quality have are a bit fuzzy.

  • Problems with importing films  in iMovie11. Who knows the answer?

    How can I import films from my Sony DCR-SR36 videocamera in iMovie11? I've problems with trying this. Only once iMovie recognized my camera but didn't import sound. The other times I tried I used the import function of iMovie11 and saw the several MPEG files but weren't able to import them. Who can help me out, or is it not possible in any way?

    Hi, here is the rule to change in the CSS stylesheet:
    ul.MenuBarHorizontal li
        margin: 0px;
        padding: 0;
        list-style-type: none;
        font-size: 83%;
        position: relative;
        text-align: left;
        cursor: pointer;
        width: auto;    /change this from a measure to auto*/
    padding-left: 1em; /*add padding-left to space the items out /
        float: left;
    If you are going to have drop down menus, there will be more things to change, but this should do the trick for a single row menu.

  • Best quality iDVD or iDVD Pro or Toast?

    I dragged a FCE .mov, which was 1 hr 45 minutes in length, into iDVD and produced a single layered Disk that played good until the last three minutes of the program where I had six layers of video. At that point I got about 30 seconds of wormy looking transitions. I then rendered a new iDVD with a double layered disk and it played perfectly, indicating that added space and more thorough rendering can produce a clean DVD. My question is does iDVD pro or Toast offer a better algorithm that would have made the single layered disk play smoothly?
    Thank you in advance,

    Hi Alex,
    no conversion needed:
    iM works with dv, a dvd has finally mpeg2 - any "inbetween conversion" means loss of quality!
    in case, you have many stills in your project, many recommend here NOT to use the export button in iM, but simply drag'n drop the project (that file with a star) onto an open iDVD project, so rendering is done by iDVD......

  • HT1918 i need to find out the answers to my security questions but i don't know how

    Please help me.

    Welcome to the Apple community.
    You might try to see if you can change your security questions. Start here, change your country if necessary and go to manage your account > Password and Security.
    I'm able to do this, others say they need to input answers to their current security questions in order to make changes, I'm inclined to think its worth a try, you don't have anything to lose.
    If that doesn't help you might try contacting Apple through Express Lane (select your country, navigate to iCloud help and enter the serial number of one of your devices)

  • IMovie to iDVD: Error: Need to change to Best quality

    I think this must be a bug in iLife 06, create a project in iMovie 6, it will be less then 2 hours long but longer then one hour. Share out to iDVD and you get an error that the files are too large and you should change to Best Quality. Change is made to Best quality but the error still returns, there is no way to get rid of this error with the current iDVD project. Solution: Export the iMovie project (I always use Full Quality) and then drag into the iDVD theme of your choice and it will burn. This happens on my Macs at home and all of the Macs I manage at the university with iLife 06. Has anyone else seen this problem?

    But you didn't say you made the change in both places. This needed to be done by someone a couple of days ago.
    You can also try this, but you'll have to reset Prefs:
    This frequently helps solve some problems. Quit iDVD. Search for the file named com.apple.iDVD.plist and trash it. (A new one will be created next launch of iDVD.) Or look in: User/Library/Preferences. This may solve project loading errors too. Restart and use Disk Utility to Repair Permissions.

  • IDVD 5 project, 26 chapters, burns Best Performance not Best Quality

    My iDVD project WILL burn with 26 chapter headings at "Best Performance", but the same project will NOT burn at "Best Quality". The same file will burn at "Best Quality" without the chapter headings. I have retried multiple times. Each time Best Performance will burn, Best Quality will not.
    As a rule I use Best Quality. The last project finished a couple of months ago. (So, probably earlier than 10.4.7) Best Quality usually works for me, just not on this project.
    Note, I have filed a bug report but thought I should also share this with discussions.
    (All the usual remedies, with resetting cache plist repairing permissions performed between each attempt, and attempts to burn from a new user. The video file has no transitions)
    iDVD 5.0.1 (626), Quicktime Pro 7.1.3, 10.4.7
    Mac G5 Quicksilver 867 MHz, 2MB L3 cache, memory 1.5 gig.
    Entire video length is 00:45:58.
    My user set chapter markers are at [00:01:19.2637] [00:03:18.1194] [00:04:06.2638] [00:05:45.2235] [00:07:07.2781] [00:08:16.0988] [00:09:53.0879] [00:12:22.2126] [00:13:04.0552] [00:15:30.2190]
    [00:16:15.2725] [00:17:13.0799] [00:18:26.2418] [00:20:02.1206] [00:22:48.1704]
    [00:27:03.1369] [00:27:59.0637] [00:29:56.1588] [00:31:27.1161] [00:34:26.1298]
    [00:34:59.0097] [00:38:54.1302] [00:41:12.1516] [00:42:02.2966] [00:43:34.1742]
    [00:45:09.1127]
    So the first chapter marker is over one minute into the video and the last is 49 seconds before the end of the video.
    It took me a couple of weeks of futile attempts at Best Quality to figure this out. I am exhausted and don't have the energy to start deleting chapter markers one at a time to see if and when it will burn at Best Quality.
    Any thoughts?

    Hello Robert,
    I'm not really able to provide a solution - maybe some of the more knowledgeable users on this board will chime in - but can only offer a guess.
    There hav been several reports of compatibility issues between Tiger/QT 7 and iMovie/iDVD 5, so maybe that's your "bug".
    Recommended is:
    • OS X 10.3.9/QT 6.5.2/iLife 5
    • OS X 10.4.x/QT 7.1.x/iLife 6
    I would also try to create a new iDVD project for your movie after deleting iDVD prefs and repairing permissions. Then try to create a disk image (if you didn't try that already)
    hope this helps

  • Best quality import from VHS

    I'm importing some VHS tapes into iMovie09 using an ADVC-55 and then MPEGstreamclip to break the project into small clips. However, I'm new to MPEGstreamclip and want to use the best quality settings for the data transfer. Rather than spending many hours trying different strategies, can anyone recommend what settings will, in general, give the best quality?
    The tapes, and output DVD, are PAL.
    Thanks for suggestions and tips.

    As a new user, what is the best channel for obtaining iMovie 06, given that it's the best method for maintaining quality?
    I understand your frustration. Actually, once you get the work flow down, it is pretty easy. I think it's fairly well established that iMovie 06 will give you better quality with DV video to make a DVD.
    Obviously, it seems a little complicated to have 2 versions of iMovie. I can't think of any other cases where I have 2 versions of the same program. However, in the case of iMovie, iMovie 06 and iMovie 09 are vastly different.
    I use both of these iMovies on a regular basis. But on the project that you are describing, I would definitely use iMovie 06 for better quality. Someday, when you're dealing with high definition and are sharing these videos on the internet, you may find iMovie 09 to your liking.
    I found iMovie 06 to be very intuitive and easy to learn. My video editing goes back to the film days, so I find iMovie 06 quite natural to me.
    If you buy the iLife 06 disk, only install iMovie 06 from it. iMovie 06 will not delete anything and it works fine with iDVD 09.
    Basically, connect your camera and import into iMovie 06, then share to iDVD 09. Do a 5 or 10 minute project first to establish your work flow. Do this a few times and you can zip along thru the remaining work.
    You can get iMovie 06 in a number of ways. You cannot download it FROM APPLE any longer (it was free for a time). You can also find iMovie 06 on the iLife 06 install disc. You can buy iLife 06 on Amazon or eBay.
    But be prepared to pay about double the cost of iLife 09 (but well worth every penny). Seller's are becoming aware of its value.

  • What's the best setting to save  footage (.mov) to dvd/cd with best quality

    Hi, I'm editing a little movie that might be played later on tv/cinema. I 'm trying to keep/burn my footage into a lighter format but I can't guess which setting is the best. Would the setting be good enough? (also do I burn it on a dvd or data cd?...) Is somebody could help me? Thank you, Laurence
    (my footage were filmed with a 4 chip camera)

    If you have the camera to import into iMovie I don't understand why you can't send it back to tape. That will be the best quality and the fastest time.
    If your PowerBook doesn't have a DVD burner you could take the tape and camera to a friend that has a Mac and a DVD burner. Send the file to iMovie and then iDVD for burning.
    Once you export to a lower quality QuickTime file some of the quality will be lost forever. The tape would be identical to the iMovie version.
    There is no "best" export method because every file is different. I would use Movie to QuickTime movie, sized at 640X480 and select the H.264 video codec and Apple Loseless audio codec set at 48kHz stereo. Use the same frame rate as your source and a bit rate about 2,000.

  • How to export the best quality file from FCE?

    Hi people. I was wondering which is the option that I have to choose to get the best quality on an exported file from FCE4. The best quality I get is from the "Export - Quicktime movie..." option, but there is a huge compression as I see. The final product isn't as good as it should. Obviously, it won't be the same as the original material, but I was wondering if there was another way of getting a movie with much more quality, like when you use "Compressor" from the Final Cut Studio. Thanks in advance.

    I imported the material through firewire (it was recorded on a miniDV tape). I respected the format of the source and the files I got are top notch. The final movie looks great on the computer, the differences come when burning it to a DVD. I'm using IDVD, and the .mov file exported through the option I mentioned.
    I want to burn that .mov file to a DVD, which means there will be another compression to MPEG2 once I burn it through the DVD authoring app, but the product has some kind of "shaking" in the dark areas. It's not so bad, but I would like to get the best quality, like the ones I've got from Compressor. Is it possible using the Export - Quicktime movie option?

  • Encoding: Best Performance vs. Best Quality

    So I have a project that if I select Best Performance it shows that the DVD will be 3.4GB, and if I select Best Quality it shows the DVD will be 2.0GB.
    So my question is: isn't that contrary to logic? Why wouldn't Best Quality be the largest size? Is Best Quality going to give me the best possible video quality?

    Since you have posted to the iDVD 6 forum, I asssume that is what you have.
    iDVD 6 has two encoding modes: 'Best Performance' and 'Best Quality'. iDVD '08 adds: 'Professional Quality'.
    People misunderstand the names and I wish Apple had used different names for all three modes.
    The below applies to a single layer disc (double the times for a double layer disc):
    'Best Performance' uses a fixed video encoding bit-rate that produces a DVD with a data playback bit-rate just about as high as a set-top DVD player can handle. This limits content to 60 minutes or less.
    'Best Quality' uses a fixed video encoding bit-rate that is BASED ON THE TOTAL AMOUNT OF CONTENT BEING COMPRESSED and is best suited for content between 60 and 120 minutes. Note that all the content is encoded at the same bit-rate so that it can fit on a single layer disc. (Apple calls this single-pass variable bit-rate encoding because 120 minutes of content gets compressed more than 60 minutes of content.)
    The new 'Professional Quality' uses a variable video encoding bit-rate that is BASED ON THE INFORMATION IN THE CONTENT BEING COMPRESSED. It uses a two-pass process to first evaluate the content and then encode it based on the motion/detail of individual clips. It is best suited for content between 60 and 120 minutes. Note that not all the content is encoded at the same bit-rate BUT the maximum data bit-rate on playback can not exceed the playback capability of a set-top DVD player. (This is two-pass, variable bit-rate encoding.) This means the BEST encoded quality should be about what is obtained with 'Best Performance' for content under 60 minutes.
    If your content is under 60 minutes, use 'Best Performance'. If your content is between 60 minutes and 120 minutes, use 'Professional Quality' if your processor is fast enough and you don't mind waiting about twice the time required for 'Best Quality'.
    About the only thing Apple can do to further improve the quality of DVD encoded video is to offer compressed audio instead of just the present uncompressed PCM audio because the audio 'eats up' part of the playback bit-rate a set-top DVD player can handle. Compressed audio would make more of the maximum playback bit-rate available for video.
    In your case, with iDVD 6, use 'Best Performance' for content under 60 minutes and 'Best Quality' for content over 60 minutes. Remember that your menu content counts against the total time limit.

    Flash video is becoming popular because you can have a player embedded
    in your web page that will stream video that will play on nearly any
    browser without additional plug-ins. You can get decent quality at a
    decent size.

  • Best Quality or Best Performance. Which?

    I am using iMovie to import a series of old videotapes and my question relates to producing the best possible output of these captured tapes from iDVD. So far it seems to me that the original tapes look better than their digital offspring written to DVD. Under Project info there are two encoding options, Best Performance and Best Quality. The help pages state or imply that Best Quality means just that. However that setting also produces smaller files, say 2.6Gb for an 83 minute recording as opposed to 4.6Gb when set to Best Performance. This doesn't seem to make sense as smaller files are presumably more compressed and therefore of lower quality. Can someone explain? What settings should I use?
    Thanks.
    Mac Pro   Mac OS X (10.4.9)

    So if Best Quality uses a lower bitrate perhaps it should be called Less Quality
    Bitrate isn't everything. A good encoder may well produce better quality with a lower bitrate than another encoder with a higher bitrate. And often good quality takes more time to encode, too.
    I have done some tests and at least with that particular test material I got slightly better quality in a very few high-action scenes with Best Performance.
    But since most of my DVDs are >60 minutes, I always use the Best Quality setting.
    should a DVD from videotape have the same quality (good, bad or indifferent) as the original?
    MPEG encoding compresses data so the quality will always suffer. But usually you don't notice it. It also depends on the input material: difficult to encode scenes include high action, noisy low-light scenes, water, smoke etc.
    With Best Performance or with <75(-90) minutes' Best Quality the iDVD output quality has been OK for me.
    But I'd wish iDVD used compressed audio because uncompressed PCM audio steals way too much bandwidth from video in long (90-120 min) DVDs!
