Subtitle flickering DVD Player 5.4

Was wondering if anyone has heard of any updates to the DVD Player 5.4 subtitle flickering issue? I'm having the exact same issue... that is, subtitles flickering when playing a DVD (player 5.4) that has embedded subtitles used as translated bits of foreign language? Very frustrating. And when I tried to file an Apple bug report, the developer site is apparently off-line.
Also like everyone else, the issue only occurs on DVDs with bits of translated/subtitled dialogue.

Are these subtitles added to a movie in iDVD or to a slideshow in iDVD?  What type of presentations is it?  If a movie where did it come from?  See Bengt Wärleby's post in this topic for items affecting iDVD quality: DVD quality: Apple Support Communities
Follow this workflow to help assure the best qualty video DVD:
Once you have the project as you want it save it as a disk image via the File ➙ Save as Disk Image  menu option. This will separate the encoding process from the burn process.
To check the encoding mount the disk image, launch DVD Player and play it.  If it plays OK with DVD Player the encoding is good.
Then burn to disk with Disk Utility or Toast at the slowest speed available (2x-4x) to assure the best burn quality.  Always use top quality media:  Verbatim, Maxell or Taiyo Yuden DVD-R are the most recommended in these forums.

  • DVD player subtitle problem

I can't get rid of subtiltles tried with many different DVDs and even when off the subtitles are still shown.
    What can I do
    P.S.
There is a lot of funny things happenning in tiger, itune can't save libraries, finalcut pro shots down with no reasons and I get the screen of death when I try to reinstall tiger.

    Hello,
Sorry to hear you are having problems with your Mac.
Re: the DVD problem. Showing subtitles in movies
Some movies may include subtitles in one or more languages. You can display subtitles using the Controller.
With the movie playing, choose Controls > Open Control Drawer to show the hidden controls.
Click the Subtitle button to turn subtitles on. If subtitles in other languages are available, press the button to choose one from the menu.
Note: Some discs may not allow you to change subtitles in this way. You may need to use the disc's interactive menus instead.
You can also use the Navigator to find out which subtitles you are currently using and change the selection.
To set the default language for subtitles, choose DVD Player > Preferences and click Disc Setup. Choose a language from the Subtitle pop-up menu.
Some discs may also support DVD Player's closed captioning feature.
As for the software glitches and the fact you can't reinstall Tiger is much more of a concern that the DVD glitch. Have you tried booting from your Tiger disk holding down the C key? I need more details please in order to assist you.

  • Subtitles Work in simulator but are wrong in Apple DVD player

OK I have used scripts to set one of two subtitle tracks (French or English) and another script to jump to a play once or a looping version of the video track. One menu selects the subtitle language and another menu selects the single or loop play option.
In the simulator it all works as expected, I can see that the SPRM and GPRM values are correct for the functions I have set. The SPRM 2 values are correct for the subtitle tracks and they are copied to a GPRM register so the correct language slideshow is played before the video track.
However when I do a build and play that in the Apple DVD player only the English subtitle appears no matter what language is selected. The correct language slideshow is played for either language selected but I always see the english subtitles when it jumps to the video.
Would this be a problem with the Apple DVD player software or could there be a problem with some of my scripting?
I have used the Set System Stream command to select the subtitle tracks and the Set GPRM and Compare commands to jump to the correct language slideshow.
    Any advice gratefully received.
    Regards, Russell

    Hi Russel
After endless hours of trying to work around the same problem you have, I found the solution. The problem has to do with the script. For some strange reason the scripts become corrupted. I found out that the problem was corrected when I made a new script and connected the buttons to the new script. Hope they at apple find time to correct this problem in the future.

  • Subtitles in Apple DVD player won't go away

This is not a Tiger problem per se- more of an Apple DVD player problem. I couldn't find a forum for the DVD app. If I'm in the wrong place, I'd be happy to post in the proper place if someone could point me in the right direction.
So I'm running os 10.4.7 on an 800 mhz iMac (flatscreen, "lamp" model), my version of the Apple DVD player is 4.6.5, framework version 4.6.6.
Here's the problem- whenever I watch a movie (this seems to happen only with American DVDs), these QT/OS X looking (beautiful crisp white letters on a highly transparent smokey grey field) subtitles appear, they are independent of the subtitles invoked by the subtitle button in the player- I can toggle through all the languages, they work fine, but the QT/OS X looking subtitles never go away- I'll have two sets running simultaneously. (Or just the QT/OSX one, when I set subtitles to "off")
While they are gorgeous and superior to the "other" set of subtitles (which I CAN control), in both visual appeal and intelligent placement, I would like to be able to turn them off.
I thought a handicap access feature in the System Preferences might have been involved, but it doesn't seem so.
Can someone help me turn this off? Incidentally, these phantom permanent subtitles weren't always here, though I can't really say when they appeared.
Thanks in advance for the help,
    Nosloj2400

Do you have "Closed Captioning" (DVD Player "Controls" menu) turned on? You may have turned it on accidentally via Option-Cmd-T.

  • Dvd player subtitles always on

since I upgraded to 10.6, DVD player always has subtitles on. This is happening with rented  dvd's.  no matter what I turn off in the control menus, subtititles are always displayed.  anyone else with this issue?

Just use another player like VLC and you will have full subtitlte control.
But the DVD Player does have a little control in its control panel in the upper right which you can repeatedly click to cycle through the available subtitle languages or turn the subtitle off.
It's the top right of those 6 control boxes.
Note, if those 6 controls are not showing grab the little slider (double lines) on the right and drag to the right to make it appear.

  • DVD Player does not show all subtitles available

I am posting this in the OS X Tiger forum, because I could not find a forum dedicated to DVD Player.
I am looking for a way to access "hidden" subtitle languages. I know that probably doesn't make sense. Here is what I mean:
Most DVDs have a page that lets you select a subtitle language (English, Spanish, French). However, if I play a DVD on the Toshiba DVD player connected my TV and I press the "subtitle" button on the remote, a pop-up window appears on the screen that usually shows many more language options than are available on the subtitle page. (Japanese, Indonesian, Chinese, etc.)
Is there a way to access these "hidden" subtitle languges with Apple's DVD player? (I have ver. 4.6.5)

    Hi, Clinto.
I've not used that option, but it it exists then you would use the method described in the DVD Player Help topic "Showing subtitles in movies."
In DVD Player, select Help > DVD Player Help. In the resulting Help Viewer window, type "showing subtitles" in the search field in the top border, press Return, then double-click the "Showing subtitles in movies" topic in the search results. Follow the instructions in that DVD Player Help document.
    Good luck!

  • How to add subtitle file on dvd player

Hi, I have a foreign language dvd without subtitles on it, so I downloaded a subtitle (.srt) file. Is there any way I can tell the dvd player on mac leopard that I want it to play the movie with this subtitle file? When I go to "Features>Subtitles" menu of the dvd player, the only options I have are either "Off" or "Unspecified". Since the dvd has no subtitle file in it, the "Off" option is checked by default, for this dvd; and it doesnt obviously help to just uncheck it. Any ideas?

You will have to first extract the video file from the DVD. If it's not encrypted, use MPEG Streamclip
    <http://www.squared5.com/>
Then you can play the video and subtitle files with VLC
    <http://www.videolan.org
or QuickTime Player if you install Perian
    <http://www.perian.org>
Make sure the video and subtitle files have the same name (except for the .srt extension).

  • Subtitles won't play back off disk image or DVD player.

    Hello,
I am running into problems seeing the sole subtitle track that I have thru a TV DVD Player or a burned disk image. All is fine in DVD SP's Simulator. So the bottom line is that I am doing something wrong, heh?
My set-up is very straight forward: one main menu page, from which I have a "Subtitle Yes No" set of buttons to respectively enable/disable the subtitle track. The "Yes"/"No" buttons enable/disable the subtitle track by checking/unchecking the "View" box of the Button Inspector as described in the first part of this article: http://www.kenstone.net/fcphomepage/dvd_sp2subtitles.html
Furthermore, other menu pages are accessed, playing back media from a single track with numerous chapters in it, and stories made out of that track. I was hoping I could refrain from needing to duplicate all stories, e.g. One set of stories with the subtitling track enabled, the other set disabled, but it seems like this is the way to go to make it work.
Is there another approach to this? I am rather new to DVD SP and am not familiar with Scripts - would a script help this out?
Thanks in advance for any help you could provide...
    Cheers,
    Alain
MacBook Pro 2.16GHz Intel Core Duo   Mac OS X (10.4.8)   2 GB Memory

OK so I've answered my own question, thought I'd post it here if ever this can help someone else...
Duplicating menus and stories toggling on/off the "View" checkbox of my subtitle stream did not work, which is a good thing in a way because it was an ugly scene to work with.
I guess I was impressed by the "Script" term and refrained from using it, but it turns out to be very easy and simple to use... On my "Subtitle - Yes" button, I targetted a 2-liner script that enables "SPRM 2" (the "Subpicture Stream") with the "On" value of 64 for Stream 1. On my Subtitle - No button, I targetted another 2-liner script that disables "SPRM 2" by assigning it a value of 0.
I find the DVDSP documentation on scripting a little lame though, I guess I would have liked some more examples to help the scripting "science" sink in...
    Cheers,
    Alain

  • DVD Studio Pro2 does not let you turn off the subtitle in the DVD Player

    Hello
When I create a DVD in DVD Studio Pro 2 with subtitles and I do not activate the VIEW option beside the Subtitle (in Advanced tab), it does not let me turn the off the subtitle in the DVD Player.
    What could be the reason?
    Thanks for your help
    Christoph

Thanks for your interest to help me!
What I did in the three different language selection I selected the audio track and the subtitle.
But I did not select by any flag "View" = which would force it to play the subtitle.
Is there some where else where it has the force option to play always subtitles?
On the DVD Player I can change the subtitle but *not turn it off* by Mac, Win, and external Player.
    Thanks and Greetings Christoph

  • DVD Player subtitles won't go off

    emp. I figured it out.

I'm sorry I figured it out.
under controls under closed caption (dvd player menu).

  • How do I NOT show EN subtitles regardless of player's EN settings?

I'm auhoring a project that includes a little making of segment that's been subtitled in English. I've tagged these as being English, as it looks nice in the On Screen Display when they're selected by remote. Actually, they should only be accessible and appear through the subtitle button on the remote control, so there's no option in a menu to activate these.
This works fine unless a DVD player's settings have been set to English as the preferred language (for subtitle streams). Then of course they appear, as they should. However, my client does not want these to appear, regardless of the player's settings, since English is the default factory preset in the country where this DVD will be sold in mostly, when the documentary is spoken in the native language of that country.
I take it the easy way out of this is to tag the subtitle stream's language as 'not set' (which I have to test), but I would still like the stream to display as being English in a player's OSD.
Is there a pre-script that I can write that will bypass the player's settings? It looks like there's an option using Conditional Elements and States. But if I 'not equal' (!=) the SPRM (18) to English, will it still be selectable by Remote?
    Any tips? Thanks!

Sorry about that, missed the part about that no changes to menu.
One way to do this without changing the menu is as follows:
1.) Set up the First Subtiitle stream Blank
    2.) Second with subtitles
3.) Make script from button on the menu which is
    SET SYSTEM STREAM Blank Stream
    JUMP Track
People then can toggle on and off (if you disable remote then will not be able to toggle)
Is that is what you wanted to do? Basically there is no way to prevent someone to look at the subtitles if you want others to be able to look at the substitles since you said the machines are English being sold in predominately non English speaking area

  • DVD player crashes Mac

Trying to play a DVD on my Mac causes it to freeze/crash. Dock is unresponsive can't cmd + Q or even force quit. I can move my cursor around the screen, but nothing is click-able. No spinning coloured wheel either. Have to hold power off and restart. First time my Mac has actually crashed...
    Happened three times
    1) started full screen crashed after a few seconds
    2) started in windowed mode crashed when i tried to resize said window.
    3) was playing fine for four minutes then froze as described above
Why is this? The DVD is brand new, and clean of any scratches or dirt.
    Thanks for any help
    btw, my specs are;
Silver Macbook Pro running Snow Leopard
    2.4ghz
    4GB RAM
I'm not sure of the graphics card, but it's good, Can run all applications fine.

I'm also having the exact same problem. For me the time to freeze varies and it's only after I start playing the DVD. Navigating through the DVD menus seems to work OK, I only have trouble when playing content.
It typically freezes within about 5 or 10 seconds but can go a little longer. The sound continues for a few seconds after the video has stopped, but after that I have to hold the power button to force a restart.
It doesn't matter if I'm using DVD Player or Front Row. I have noticed that the screen briefly (VERY briefly) flickers once every few seconds when it's frozen. This seems to be independent of whether the player is in fullscreen or windowed mode.
I've found that it only affects me on a couple of music DVDs as well; I think this is because these ones are multi-region. DVDs encoded for a single region seem to play just fine (as long as they match the drive's region setting, of course!).
I have definitely played one of these music DVDs before but I don't remember when so it may or may not have been before I upgraded to Snow Leopard. I see that the 10.6.1 update included a fix for DVD playback... maybe that fix broke something else?

  • DVD created with Encore won't play on DVD player

    Hello everyone,
I didn't reply to the other topic I posted here, but that problem (I think) is fixed.  It turned out to be a size problem.  I just reencoded the main movie at a lower bitrate and that problem should be resolved.
The final disc image now comes out at about 6.8-7gb out of an 8.5gb dual layer disc.  So I should have plenty of room with no space issues.
However, I am having a new problem that I didn't have before.  I really am feeling a time crunch to finish this project in the next day or two.  Everything is finished.  It looks great.  I built an iso with Adobe Encore and mounted it and tested it in PowerDVD.
Everything was completely flawless.  All the menus, the videos, the animation, everything.
So I go to burn the disc with Imgburn.  I burn it at 2.4x (the slowest my drive will write at).  Anyway, when it is finished it will NOT play on my dvd player.  Actually, I am using a PS3 to test it out but it is the only dvd player I have to use right now.  I have burned many discs with Encore before and they all worked great on my PS3.
So, I have traded one problem for another.  When I posted my previous topic, that disc I burned played on my PS3.  Part of the video was cut off but it played at least.  I can get the disc to play on my computer though.  I don't know if it is reading it as a folder or what.
I have tried redoing the project from scratch twice.  I removed all the assets, started a new project and carefully imported all the menus, videos and subtitles one at a time to be sure I didn't do anything wrong.  I looked for any settings that could be screwing things up but I couldn't find any.  I think I burned three or four discs that have all turned out the same.
Are there any specific settings that I might be missing?  Why would my disc not be playing in my PS3?
Please help me finish this project.

    I am using a PC, Windows 7 64bit.
The burner is an LG WH08LS20.
The media is Verbatim DataLifePlus Inkjet Printable DVD+R DL discs.
The problem is I have created many, many discs using Encore that have played perfectly fine on my PS3.  In fact, just a couple days ago when I created the last topic I created a dvd that played fine on my PS3.  It had problems with cutting off parts of the video like I said, but at least it played.
I don't think I am doing anything different in the creation of these discs now.  I am completely stumped.
When I put the disc in my ps3 nothing happens.  The dvd doesn't load automatically.  And there is no option under "video" to select it.
Do you have any ideas that could help me fix this problem?

  • Buttons over video doesn't work on set top dvd player

I've tested my project on apple dvd player & my set top panasonic dvd player and it works fine. my friend has tested it on his sony & a few other set tops without any issues.. I just put the disc in another sony dvd player & now the button hi-lites aren't showing up! To see if it was just the dvd player I tried a disc authored in scenarist that also uses buttons via forced subtitle streams & it works just fine. is my issue a result of using dvd studio semi-pro?
has anyone out there run into this?
p.s. both my track and disc settings have "force display" checked.

    Unfortunately I have come across this all too often. So lets establish the facts here. The disc;
plays fine on stand alone DVD players
    plays fine on Macs
    plays fine on Windows computers
but it has trouble playing on her computer.
So her argument is that their must be something wrong with the disc...
    Really?
