Subtitle Problems

I have had the vision box for a few days now. I am hard of hearing and need to use subtitles, or risk waking the neighbours due to the volume being too high!!
Now imagine my disapointment that NONE of the on demand content is subtitled. This in my view is pretty poor. Even if it is a technical restraint where a subtitle stream can not be sent down at the same time. How about having a seperate section for videos with subtitles built into the picture.
Also two days running now I have recorded star trek voyager on the virgin channel. But both times I go to play them back the subtitles are out of sync. They are actually too fast.
Oh and everytime I change a channel, watch a programme, pretty much do anything, I have to remember to turn the subtitles on. For some strange reason it will not store your settings. How fustrating.
I have a humax box which is coming to the end of its life, but has served me well as far as subtitles are concerned.Seems the Vision box is quite tempermental when it comes to subtitles. Mostly on recorded programmes.

I'm afraid you are spot on here and it is a major disadvantage to BT Vision as a service. They can't even cure the hanging subtitle problem.
I gave my Humax box to my Mother (80) she has used it for three years now solely with subtitles. It is nearing the end of its life. She is about to go online for the first time in her life with BT Broadband. I suggested BT Vision to her and then realised she could neither keep subtitles on for Freeview or actually watch any of the OnDemand stuff. I don't know the technical reasons why OnDemand can't have subtitles but also miss it greatly.

Subtitle problems with Encore CS4 and BD/Blu-ray -- here is a solution!

Do you have problems with subtitles: for example they vanish completely after doing fast forward or turn them off and on again. Then here you can find one possible solution.
I am using Windows Vista 32bit. Thus Encore CS4 is the last version which I can use. Because Adobe will never provide a solution for this version, I was looking for another solution.
At least I found a workaround for my subtitle problems.
Now I am doing the following steps:
1. Create the blu-ray disk in a folder without subtitles
2. Create the subtitles with a program like "subtitle workshop"
3. Save the subtitles in the .srt format.
4. Use the program SubConverter Express v1.5.0 to convert the subtitles in the .sup format. Here you must choose a suitable font & font size.
5. Add the .sup to the blu-ray folder structure with the program BDFix Express v1.7.3. When doing that, you can also choose the language i.g. "deu" for german. You will find a detailed description in the forum on www.defsoft.com. It is very easy to understand.
6. BDFix will create a new folder with all necessary files to burn a blu-ray disk. Nothing changes in comparison to the folder which was createt by Encore except that subtitles were added.
7. You can burn this folder with a tool like imgburn.
With this workaround you will have the following advantages:
1. It seems that these subtitles were added in a blu-ray specification conform way. Fast forward/backward, switching on/off, chapter jump still work perfectly.
2. The subtitle fonts are rendered in a much more smooth way than Encore does.
3. The 5 frames gap between subtitles is not longer necessary.
4. This solution ist quite fast (about 20 minutes for a 25 GByte disc).
5. You can use these programs also for other blu-rays to add or remove subtitles.
6. You do not need Encore to add/change or remove subtitles. You can do that also years later. You only need the burned blu-ray disc.
To be honest, there is one disadvantage:
- The two programs (SubConverter & BDFix) cost about 200 US Dollar. But to cure my nerves that was worth it.
Hint: You can do a first test with the freeware versions. But there are two limitations. SubConverter can only import 30 subtitle lines and BDFix will only create 3 minutes of subtitles.

FLV and F4V use different codecs for Flash video. H.264 in case of F4V and On2 VP6 for FLV. There's a difference of bitrate between different quality presets. You can check the bitrates of files generated using some tool. Your video might be very static to feel the different be the two quality settings.
F4V is the new format and need a newer version of Flash Player. Please update your Flash player and try again to play the F4V files.
Playstream doesnt support F4V format. You can only export FLV files to Playstream.
It might also be an issue of low bandwidth while playing a streaming video. Are you playing is locally or from a web server.

Subtitle Problem on Chapter-Playlist 16:9

I think I found an Encore 2 subtitle problem. Could maybe someone confirm if this is the case and if there is a workaround:
If I have a timeline of a 16:9 movie with two subtitle tracks and I make a chapter-playlist of the whole timeline, the subtitles will not show when playing the chapter-playlist on a burned DVD (they will show correctly in the Encore preview). When I press the subitle button on the remote control it says that the two subtitle tracks exist but the actual subtitles are not showing.
If however the timeline is 4:3 (and the chapter-playlist of this timeline therefor also), everything is fine, the subtitles play correctly on the chapter-playlist as well.
I would appreciate very much if someone could let me know if this is an Encore problem.

I've got a 16:9 project with chapter playlists from one main timeline which has 4 subtitle tracks.
Each chapter playlist contains one individual scene and links back to the Scene Selection menu. It all works properly from the Preview in AEDVD2, but once burned, I get ENG ST on the the ENG and FR tracks, FR ST on the SP track and the SP ST on the Italian track which (as a test, and I've done many!) I've left blank.
So in my case Encore is not understanding the placement of the ST tracks when read from a chapter playlist. It's completely illogical because the Main Menu has the buttons to play the whole movie with a corresponding ST track (and one to play with all ST OFF) and they are all perfectly interpreted on the burned DVD. No way to comprend why Encore shifts the ST tracks when selecting a scene from the Scene selection menu. Another hint, when I hit the info button on the remote from inside a chapter, it automatically comes up "ST OFF" while I haven't touched anything in the properties zone to set this. So although the setting is "no change", Encore is setting it to OFF and then shifting the tracks so they no longer correspond to the main timeline from which they're taken. Something is definitely amiss somewhere. Has anyone figured out what's going on?

Subtitle problem on 32L4333 TV. Weird font type due to greek language

Hi there! I just bought a new Toshiba Smart Tv (32L4333) and while I am trying to view a video with greek subs there are only weird characters. I know that this problem is due to encoding but i can understand how in 2013 Toshiba doesn't have selection for enoding in subtitles on a "smart tv". Does anyone have solve this via his tv or should I change the srt file's encoding any time I want to use subtitles?

Apple tv subtitle problem

I just bought the Avengers through itunes and im playing it through apple tv. When a scene comes up that requires subtitles, i get a double subtitle type thing going on. I see the subtitles i recognized from seeing the movie in theatres, but then a matte shadowed bar pops up also, with its own set of the same subtitles that show up a little bit lower then the original set of subtitles. Anyone know why this is happening?

The issue has been fixed. Just a simple redownload from the cloud is needed. Make sure you delete the copy in the itunes library before redownloading. Heres the email I got today:

Thank you for downloading the movie The Avengers. Unfortunately, the movie you received may have had issues with the subtitles. We have corrected the problem and a new copy is available to download, free of charge. To receive the new version, please re-download the title from iTunes.
Before downloading the new version, remove the current version:

2) Click on your Movies library.
3) Click the movie to select it, and press the Delete key.
4) Click Delete Movie and then click Move to Trash.
To download the new version:
1) Sign into the iTunes Store.
2) Click Purchased on the right side in the iTunes Store under the QUICK LINKS section.
3) Click on Movies and select the movie you want to download.
4) Click the Cloud download icon to download the movie.
You will now have an updated version of the movie in your Movies Library.

Subtitle problem in DVDSP 3.03

Hi guys.
I've checked previous posts and can't find anything that answers my problem.
I have a fairly simple DVD with one menu with three buttons, play film, play with subtitles 1 and play with subtitles 2. These are all connected to the one track with two subtitle streams.
Play film plays the film with no subtitle stream selected.
Sub title 1 plays with sub stream 1 and likewise for subtitle 2.
These all work fine unless I play one of the subtitle options then hit title or menu to go back to the menu. The problem that occurs is that after watching the track with one of the sub streams on, if I then select the play film (with no subs) option then the film plays but it displays whatever the last sub stream was. I've had a look through the manual with no clues. For the two subtitle buttons I have the view box checked and for the play film button I have no nothing selected under streams.
Can anyone help?

Hi John, the problem here is that when you set the subtitle stream to play, the setting is persistent - only unsetting it will change it. If you have a button set to activate the track without the subtitle there is actually no change made to the subtitle setting.
What you want to do is either use a script to set the subtitle stream to off, or simply set up an empty subtitle stream and point the button to use that. This will have the effect of changing the setting but showing nothing because nothing is there...

Urdu subtitles (problems with Unicode)

I have a major problem where I have a number of subtitle documents in Word with the text in Urdu. I can save these documents as Unicode txt files and they seem to be okay. However, when I import into Encore the subtitles look different (they still look like some kind of Arabic text but different). I've gone round in circles over this and have run out of ideas!!

"Full Unicode support. With support for vertical and right-to-left scripts, ligatures, etc."

DVD player subtitle problem

I can't get rid of subtiltles tried with many different DVDs and even when off the subtitles are still shown.
What can I do

There is a lot of funny things happenning in tiger, itune can't save libraries, finalcut pro shots down with no reasons and I get the screen of death when I try to reinstall tiger.

Re: the DVD problem. Showing subtitles in movies
Some movies may include subtitles in one or more languages. You can display subtitles using the Controller.
With the movie playing, choose Controls > Open Control Drawer to show the hidden controls.
Click the Subtitle button to turn subtitles on. If subtitles in other languages are available, press the button to choose one from the menu.
Note: Some discs may not allow you to change subtitles in this way. You may need to use the disc's interactive menus instead.
You can also use the Navigator to find out which subtitles you are currently using and change the selection.
To set the default language for subtitles, choose DVD Player > Preferences and click Disc Setup. Choose a language from the Subtitle pop-up menu.
Some discs may also support DVD Player's closed captioning feature.
As for the software glitches and the fact you can't reinstall Tiger is much more of a concern that the DVD glitch. Have you tried booting from your Tiger disk holding down the C key? I need more details please in order to assist you.

Apple TV Subtitles problem

Hello!
Yesterday I rented a movie with subtitles on many languages on my Macbook Pro. I decided that I to stream it to Apple TV. All good but when I tried to activate the subtitles, the only ones showing were the one in English and were the one on Closed Captions. If I continued to watch the movie on my Macbook, I could select the subtitles in spanish, french and many other availables.
How can I solve this? Has anyone experience this?

Check the video being played back on your Mac - occasionally subtitles are burned into the video rather than being optional, either due to a glitch with the file (use the Report a Problem link in your invoice) or by design.
Avengers Assemble had both burned in and 'soft' subtitles at some points until they corrected it meaning there were 2 sets of overlapping subtitles in some scenes!

The Polish subtitles are missing !, there are Danish, German, Swedish and many more but Polish Subtitles in the Polish Version of iTunes are missing.

I have the same problem, unfortunately I do not have a column with "Automatic Graphics switching" in System Preferences - Energy Saver.
Macbook Pro 13" with retina display - Intel Iris. It is maybe because of the only one graphic card? (integrated).... when I connect Macbook with HDMi to my TV it works good, but when I unplug it subtitles are cut and I can see onle the first row (the second is hidden in the black frame and flickering sometimes).

Encore DVD 1.01 - SubTitle Problem

Komme mit Encore ganz prima zurecht. Hatte heute nun versucht, einmal eine Subtitle Spur in einer Timeline einzubauen (en).
Da wimmelt es vor lauter Fehlern. Ein Import ist nicht möglich, da mault er immer nur was von falschen Zeilen. Erstellt man den Untertitel im Fenster direkt, bleibt der Rechner fast stehen. Ändert man dann Fontgröße etc., kommen ständig irgendwelche Fehler (die Fehlernummern weiß ich im Moment nicht).
Also diese Fehlerwust, wie er in der Version 1.0 allgemein zu sehen war. Kann es sein, dass bei den Subtitles noch etliche Bugs vorhanden sind???
Wegen "fast Rechnerstillstand": Ich arbeite mit 2 GHz, 150 GB RAM etc. Daran kann es nicht liegen. Alles andere klappt ja, und Premiere Pro macht auch keine Probleme. Rendert Encore etwa im Hintergrund da??
Bin auf Tipps gespannt!

wer einem Leid tun kann sind die Jungs und Mädels vom Telefon-Support, weil die Sich immer meine Flüche anhören müssen und trotzdem nett bleiben..
Anyway...... es ist vieles besser geworden mit 1.5 Aber es immer noch ein Beta-Programm. Mann kann damit KEINE proffessionelle Pruktion zuende bringen. Da Encore 1.5 jetzt auch versagt hat, werde ich wohl, da die alternativen Mau sind, doch zum MAC übertreten. Bin auf verläßlichesa DVD-Authoring angewiesen.Schaade um die anderen Lizenzen, wenisgtens wird´s Compositing wieder billiger.
Ich war seit einigen Jahren immer mitAdobe zufrieden, sei es Pagemaker, Premiere, Photoshop oder After-effects, aber das, was die sich jetzt geleisted haben mit Encore ist so krass.....
Regulär kosted das Upgrade (Updarte?) auf die Encore (Beta!!)-Version über 100 , ich kann das nicht nachvollziehen.
Enweder, es kommt jetzt ganz schnell ein Ultra-Bugfix raus, oder Adobe hat es ich mit vielen langjährigen Kunden verschertzt, die immer bilnd im Vertrauen auf Adobe gesetzt haben!!

FOX on demand subtitle problem

Hey everyone, is it just me or do subtitles not appear correctly on FOX on demand (and FX on demand) as well? Sometimes, it's weird purple lettering on the black background and sometimes it's just a solid black background with no lettering. None of the other on demand channels have this problem. Very strange that it's only FOX (and it seems that I can now FF through the commercials so I was looking forward to watching some more shows but I do like to have the CC on).

Is your problem still happening? I just connected to the NY feed and viewed all of the Simpson VOD titles (HD and standard) and the subtitles are showing appropriately. If you are still having trouble, you will need to check the subtitle preferences in your box. You can get there by going to MENU > SETTINGS > ACCESSIBILITY > SUBTITLES. Check the font color here to see if its customized or set to auto. If its set to auto and its still happening, try changing the font color to white.

Subtitle problem

Hello everyone,
I have problem with subtitles, app for them is installed. I put the video and subtitle in same folder , but subtitle isn't loading.
My language have letters like č, ć, ž, đ so I don't know do I need to change type of text in options Encoding and what type

Subtitle problems CS5 encore 5

Does someone have an explanation for me on a subtitle issue I seem to have wtih CS5/ Encore 5 inbuilding a DVD.
I have a single timeline, 4 chapters, each in a different chapter playlist. 16:9 format, 2 audio tracks, 2 subtitles tracks.
When the DVD is made the preset combinations of audio and subtitle play correctly EXCEPT the subtitle 2 that is NOT displayed . On the DVD remote of 4 different players it show that Subtitle track 2 is selected but it is not visible on the screen. If I preview it in Encore it works fine but once built it falls apart...
any suggestions on hwat I might be doing wrong?

ITms movie subtitles problem on iPad

Hi all, renting a movie with iTms I cannot get subtitles when viewing on the iPad (check image posted - in french). On the subtitles menu of the iPad video app no option : only deactivated and no way to activate it.
If I use the iMac instead the iPad subtitles appears correctly and can be choosen.
Any idea ? Solution ?

It's hard to say what went wrong or why it happened but other users have reported this same behavior with downloaded movies.
I don't know how to prevent it - but the next time it happens - try this. When the screen freezes, quit the app and restart the iPad.
Go to the home screen first by tapping the home button. Quit/close open apps by double tapping the home button and the task bar will appear with all of you recent/open apps displayed at the bottom. Tap and hold down on any app icon until it begins to wiggle. Tap the minus sign in the upper left corner to close the apps. Restart the iPad. Restart the iPad by holding down on the sleep button until the red slider appears and then slide to shut off. To power up hold the sleep button until the Apple logo appears and let go of the button.
Try the videos again. If they will not open - try this. Swipe to right from your home screen to bring up the search feature on the iPad. Type in the name of one of the movies. when it shows up in the search - tap on the movie icon and the movie should start to play. Let it go for a minute or so and then hit the Done button. Go back to the videos app and see if they will play again.
Another thing that seems to unlock the frozen videos app is to download a podcast - a free one of course. Play the podcast for a minute or so - then go back to the video app and try the movie again.
