Subtitle Updates  - suggestions?

I have had all sorts of problems with updating my subtitles. Our client keeps checking the subtitles and coming back with more changes they want done. So, I know that with any changes made to subtitles, for them to be seen on the burnt dvd (even if they are visible in the preview), you need to tell encore to update the subtitle files. brilliant.
I have tried the following methods which have worked when I have had to do previous updates, but these methods do not work now:
- changing the leading and then 'undoing' -This is everyones answer to the problem but this doesn't work now!
- changing the justification then 'undoing'
- saving a new timeline colour set and changing all timelines to the new colour set.
- changing the font of each timeline, burning a new dvd folder and then returning back to the desired font.
- changing the kearning and then 'undoing'.
- saving the project as
- clearing the cache
Does anyone have any suggestions on any other subtitle update methods?? I would be very grateful if you do!!!

I don't think you're gonna like this much, but the way I see it going down is like this: (This is my
i personal
opinion, and in no way a recommendation for general usage)
1 - Get your client to send you a proper, typed list with timecode in & timecode out points on every title for the project.
2 - Get them to sign off on this.
3 - Point out to them - in no uncertain terms - that any changes to this after sign-off will cost them extra.
I know it's not the simple solution you are after here, but in the long run it actually is. The problem you are currently facing is one I had myself, and in my case it was totally my fault as I allowed the client to do this once or twice, after which time I could no longer tell them "Enough is Enough". The trouble is that the client is in complete charge now, and you really must put a stop to this.
Try this:
Tell your client you need a meeting to discuss the project. At the meeting, you need to tell them you are having difficulty with the working relationship as you feel that with all the constant changes being made the goalposts are constantly shifting & you no longer feel comfortable with the project as you're constantly in a state of flux - and what are you (as in "both of you") going to do to prevent this from happening.
You would be surprised how often this works. You must - and I am not joking here - take control back from your client. They are seeing this as something they can fiddle with indefinitely, and you're inadvertently allowing this to continue. You need to put a stop to it. It will be the hardest phonecall/meeting you will have ever yet made, but it will be worthwhile - and if it all goes wrong then you don't need that kind of client anyway.
Getting back to the technical issue you have.
I'd delete the entire script altogether, and start over. Seriously.
Get the full timed script from your client and import that. Make sure of the following:
1 - They tell you what font to use.
2 - They tell you the RGB colour values (remembering of course that the same rules apply to subtitles as they do to SubPicture Highlights. You get 3 colours - base (or "Fill"), Stroke & Anti-Alias I recommend the base to be set to full opacity, and the others to 66% & 31% respectively.
3 - They tell you the type face or font - sans serif generally come out better.
4 - They sign off on the in & out points & the script.
5 - You send them a single PSD file with an example line of script against a still from the film so they can see how their choices look.
When they are happy, this gets set in stone.
The reason for this is that unless you do, they are not ever going to be happy with what you do. It's not because you are not doing what they want though, it's because they have a disease we call "Fiddleitis" and seem to be incapable of saying "You know what? This is done & finished. Great Work, guys". We've had it with bands, DVD clients etc all the time until we learned to say "Sorry, but you guys have already signed off on this and any changes will have to get added to your invoice".
When all is finally ready, simply import the script into Encore & all should be just fine & dandy.

    just a few simple (and a few not so simple) software update suggestions for the c3-01:
    -allow to search for artists by typing in first letter of artist name in the music application. It allows this type of search for songs but not for artists, and if you have alot of music on your phone it is very annoying to have to scroll through the list everytime you want to change song.
    -allow to type in numbers when typing text by pressing asterisk key or similar. This type of function was present on older phones but it doesnt appear to be on this phone. Instead you have to hold each number for a few seconds to type in a number in an sms message or on the internet and it greatly slows down typing speed which i was hoping to speed up by getting a touch and type phone. It kind of defeats the purpose!!!
    -allow to choose shortcuts twice on homescreen. It seems kind of silly to not allow you to do this when its easily possible as i'd prefer more than 4 shortcuts on my homescreen.
    -allow to change keypad lock settings. This is so simple and was available on older phones, why not include with this one??
    -allow to skip tracks in music application by pressing keypad buttons (e.g. 4 and 6 or 1 and 2). This is particularly useful when phone is plugged into car radio and being able to skip between tracks by feeling for buttons rather than maybe having to look down to press touch screen buttons because you cant feel them, which is pretty dangerous when driving!
    -the apps available in the Ovi store on the c3-01 is reeeaallly limited compared to android and apple stores. Please try n introduce more useful apps!!
    -upgrade voice recorder. Im a musician and i and most other musicians usually find phone recorders very useful to record song ideas, riffs etc. However I find the voice recorder quality very poor. Im sure the phone microphone isnt that poor and sound quality can be improved with upgrade software. Please upgrade or introduce new sound recorder app on OVI. I suggest the "Tape-a-Talk Records" app which is currently available on the android app store. I found this app to greatly improve sound recording quality on my old HTC compared to the onboard sound recorder.
    I love this phone but it would be great to see some improvements!

    I feel your pain.
    I bought an unlocked C3-01 off amazon too, and have had no luck in v6.00 automatic updates or anything. Eventually I (UNADVISED!) updated it myself. You can find discussions online that tell you how to do it. People flash their own phones. The only reason I did so was because I was getting a terrible high pitched noise every 45 seconds or so on phone calls that was preventing me from using the phone -- several times I had a hard time hearing well after it would...go off? right in my ear. The phone was unusable, and using the headset didn't help either. I'm curious, does yours do the same?
    I had a backup android phone that I could use in case I bricked mine, so taking all the risks in hand I flashed mine to v6.00 on my own. No more high pitched ear aches! AND it works tons better. I'm really impressed with 6.00. It turned my C3-01 from clutter in my drawer to my everyday phone.
    It's too bad that nokia has kind of foresaken the US market when it comes to many cell phones. I am a die hard Nokia fan, so I'll keep buying unlocked Nokias, but still. I'd like to see SOME support for the US market that ISN'T smartphones, you know?

  • Firmware update suggestions/requests

    Can anybody guide me to a place on the forums where firmware update suggestions/requests can be made for the various Canon cameras, where Canon might take notice of such suggestions/requests?

    Thank you, perhaps I should clarify...I bought a new Canon G7X and assumed that Canon might release some firmware updates in future, if there are enough suggestions from users in a forum like this....sort of a wish list if you like.
    I actually frequent the forums of another brand, where they have something like that, and it seems that the manufacturers of that brand watch such things on the forums of that brand, as quiet a few of suggestions made by users are eventually incorporated into firmware updates...

  • Update suggest for N95

    Hello.
    I would like to suggest to make somekind of update for Nokia N95 Multimedia buttons. They seem not to work with other softwares than the music player.
    It's hard to use some landscape mode programs which need both hands to use (For example pressing numbers and arrows keys at same time is pretty annoying.)
    The programs can't see those music buttons available for use. It would be so much easier if you could even use two of the multimedia buttons.
    I'm not sure if this kind of update would be possible to make through firmware update or is it hard to make but it would help a lot.
    PS: On the other way the phone is really great !

    Things to do.
    (Uninstall first all nokia* progs in add/remove progs in control panel)
    1. Install new version of PC suite 6.86
    2. Install NSU 1.43.6
    3. Turn off your phone
    4. Make a hard reset by pressing 3 buttons; green button (for calling and answering call), *-button and 3-button. (note: ensure that you press the three buttons then turn on the mobile. It will ask you the region/country, current date and time if the hard reset is successful).
    5. Open the NSU then update your phone.

  • Can't get video from camera update / suggestions?

    As I think others have reported, I have lost my ability to participate in iChat AV video sessions, and any attempt produces a "can't get video from camera" error message. I am running OS 10.4.5.
    I have an extra internal hard drive with no OS on it, so I did a clean install of Mac OS 10.4 and iChat was back to working. I then applied all the Apple Software Updates to bring it up to 10.4.5 as well as any othe Security Updates and such, and it is still working OK as long as I boot off that OS.
    This tells me the problem cannot be in my Router or DSM Modem, I think.
    In the past, I have had ShowMacster and iGlasses installed on my original system, but I believe that I have uninstalled both of those properly. Still does not work.
    I DO have Apple Remote Desktop - Admin installed on this startup volume, and I cannot say for sure whether the problem may have started around the time I installed it. It's possible, I just wasn't keeping chronological records of installs back then.
    So, the GOOD news is that I can participate in any iChat AV session I want to be in as long as I have prior notice or enough time to reboot my G5 PowerMac under my second drive, but I still can't keep iChat AV open on my main drive and expect to be able to respond to impromptu invites to a video session.
    I thought I may have read that Apple Remote Desktop can create a conflict. If anyone knows, I would be all ears! Thanks for any suggestions.

    I believe I have solved the mystery of why I was getting the "can't get video from camera" error message. I had said earlier that I had Apple Remote Desktop (admin) loaded on my Mac but that I did not normally have this application open. What I failed to realize, though, was that for some reason I also had Apple Remote Desktop set to ON in my Sharing System Preferences pane. All I had to do was to uncheck this box and my ability to carry on video chats returned.
    I expect that somehow in the process of installing and running the Apple Remote Desktop application to access another Macintosh on my home network, I must have either manually or automatically caused Apple Remote Desktop to be turned ON as if I was wanting to allow some other Admin user to connect to my Mac. Doesn't make much sense to me, but I am happy with the solution.

  • IPod Touch software update suggestions - Attention Apple Development!

    Maybe this has occurred to you folks at Apple, but how about an iPod Touch software update that allows the user to create 'folders' to organize YouTube bookmarks? Even better, a way to do this in the sync-page of iTunes as well. And another suggestion - a way to select which Safari bookmarks are synched; better yet which browser to sync (Safari, Firefox, etc. - can't do this on the Mac as far as I can tell).

  • Screen problems since last s/w update -- suggestions please

    Folks:
    I think the most software update I got and installed was iTunes and QuickTime. I think --I'm not 100% sure-- that after the obligatory restart after that update was when I started seeing problems: Font "distortion" in some applications, not consistent, but now characters run together sometimes and characters look, well, lo-rez -- not consistently at all, though.
    Here's a somewhat more clear symptom. Adobe Illustrator (CS3, the latest) displays a rectangle around the central drawing area, a 1 pt black line. Operating in AI the rectangle looks fine until I move the cursor toward it. In some cases --right now on the right side only-- as the cursor approaches the line the a segment of the rectangle displaces away from the cursor about one or two pixels. It doesn't matter which drawing tool I have selected.
    Here's another symptom: As I type this (in fully updated FireFox) the first non-blank line above is distorted, as if there is a kind of smudge over the lower half of all the characters. This horizontal smudge seems to follow my progress as I type, two lines above the current cursor. As I continue to type, the distortion moves down, and affects only one line. Characters outside this "smudge zone" are fine.
    Another symptom: As I move the cursor around over this text, above and blow, some characters appear bolded. Right now, the "t" in symptom in the line above looks more or less bolded. If I move the cursor to the top of this window, the "t" changes to normal ... and then back again when I continued typing here.
    As you can see I'm having difficulty even describing what's going on. It isn't at all consistent, it appears to be system-linked and not application-specific, and it isn't serious -- just quite annoying. Shouldn't be happening!
    Oh, no, I checked: It isn't a problem with my glasses <grin>.
    Suggestions about how to describe this and where to look for solutions?

    Here is some more evidence:
    1. I thought about the issue, and the distortion seems to follow the cursor in all cases, though sometimes the effect remains after the cursor has been moved away. So, maybe it's related to (drum roll) the cursor? What can I change about the cursor? Its size, in the Universal Access preference. Unfortunately, adjusting the cursor size to maximum and back to minimum has no effect. Oh, well, it was a good idea.
    2. Why don't I post a screen-shot of the distortion somewhere? So I put Grab on timer and fooled with the cursor in this very window until the text above "...Universal Access..." appeared with its lower pixels missing, waited until the timer expired. But.... The screen shot DOES NOT SHOW THE PROBLEM. In three completely different trials, the text in the screen shot was flawless. Hmmm, that should be a very good clue for someone who understands how the screen is maintained in MacOS.
    3. Right now I have two windows side-by-side mostly filling my screen. On the left, a large photo in Preview. On the right, the Main window of Entourage 2004. I bring Preview to the front and I move the cursor to the approximate horizontal center of Preview's toolbar, which is very near the top of the screen, and I move the cursor vertically towards the bottom of the screen. About half-way, I observe, well, a ripple running across the photo, no --wait-- across the entire screen. Where the ripple meets text (in the Entourage window at the right), it distorts more or less as I've already described. I think it is important that the problem occurs in all windows, not the frontmost. Oh, yes, I've moved this window down near the bottom of the screen and, so far, I've seen no problems. So the problem appears to only occur at mid-screen, vertically. That's where one usually works...
    Ideas, anyone?

  • Nokia N8 software update suggestions

    Okay guys. So the N8 is out in most places.
    I am waiting for Australia to get it, so I don't have mine yet, but from all the reviews i've seen (countless) there are a few things that I already know I would like them to implement in future firmwares.
    1) Portrait QWERTY for text input. Includes SMS/MMS messaging aswell as general text entry.
    2) Improve the responsiveness when swiping through home screens. It should be instant, without the 1 second lag.
    3) Improve the responsiveness of the pinch-zoom on the photo viewer.
    4) Better integration with social networks, including the ability to upload photos and videos directly from the phone, without the added need of an ovi application.
    5) Better more fluent web browser, instead of the outdated clunky one currently being used.
    6) More fluent ovi maps touch navigation
    7) S^4 will be released in the near future, I would like the ability to upgrade the OS to S^4.
    Thats what I think so far, I think these features are a must have, I will add more in the future, you guys add what you think too.
    Where can we actually submit requests for FW updates?

    When you want to use WiFi only, have you ensured that you have set the connection priority in "Destinations". I had to set my home wireless as first, work WiFi as second, then Virgin Internet (or whatever your internet data provider is) to last.
    Destinations is well hidden on S^3 devices, so you go to Menu Button > Settings > Connectivity > Settings > Destinations > Internet.  Then press-hold each connection to set it's priority in the list.

  • AE CS6 won't launch on OSX 10.10, the update suggested to fix this (After Effects CS6 (11.0.4)) won't install

    I upgraded to yosemite, and now AE won't open.
    Steps I've found on the forums that I've tried and haven't worked:
    updating from the application manager:
    there doesn't appear to be an update for AE listed in the updates, so that one's a bust.
    fixing the permissions problem mentioned here:         
            the folder is already set to 'read & write' for my account, and for everyone.
    Downloading and installing this update:
    When I attempt to install it, Adobe  Application Manager tells me this:
            so I struck out there, as well.
    Are there any other things I can try? or is the next step uninstall and reinstall?

    After a time-machine reboot and a clean reinstall of everything, I was able to successfully install the 11.0.4 patch.  Do I get points for resolving my own question?

  • Future Update Suggestions

    Two wonderful additions to iTunes would be:
    1. Song Associations - Could choose multiple songs that "must" be played together under shuffled playlists. For instance, Pink Floyd "Happiest Days Of Our Lives" should ALWAYS be followed by "Another Brick In The Wall Part II". And Led Zeppelin's "Heartbreaker" should ALWAYS be followed by "Livin'-Lovin' Maid".
    2. Formula Field - Could combine or segment other fields. For example if you have songs that you would like named "artist - Song name" but those are currently seperate fields, you could create a formula field to combine the two with a divider ( - ). Just a thought.

  • Best software/update suggestions for Flash design

    We are interested in implementing flash into our web design, but I'm a little confused as to which product to
    actually purchase/upgrade to in order to create and run it.  We currently have CS2 and DreamweaverMX2004.  Should we
    purchase Adobe Flash, upgrade to CS4 which has some features in it, or upgrade to the latest DW?  Any suggestions?

    Im my opinion... In the long run I think you would be better off upgrading to the Creative Suite 4 Design Premium or Web Premium, depending on what other software you use. I would lean toward the Design Premium.

  • Can I return to former Firefox version--my desktop is in overload due to this new and confusing update...updated this morning...memory hog--besides other disconserting features not fully explained in update suggested page

    I have just updated my Mozilla Firefox at the pop-up warning that the version I was using was outdated. I am too confused by such aspects as high memory use (my computer will likely crash if this use continues--even when I am not asking questions of Mozilla Firefox. Can I reverse this choice to upgrade in order to restore all my settings and data?

    There are a lot of benefits to running the latest version of Firefox.   • Should i install driver updates suggested by windows update?

    I have a black MacBook 2.2 i believe late 2007 model.
    I have windows 7 installed via bootcamp and have updated bootcamp to 3.2. things are working fine  I guess. I noticed after i installed and ran windows update there are drivers it wants to update for Display - Mobile Intel 965 Express Chipset Family.
    Just wondering If I should update this, just because i didnt want it to overwrite a specific driver apple put in there for it..

    It should be safe to update drivers via Windows Update, as this will update any Windows drivers, and also the GPU drivers etc.
    You can also run an Apple Software Update, from within Windows (Start -> Programs -> Apple Software Update) which will bring you up to date with all the Apple & BootCamp drivers.

  • Update suggestion for Music Player N8 and other mo...

    One thing I hate on this N8 is the music player. You can only sort by Album & Artist. I would prefer to sort by Album only or Artist only. My music list is all over the place because of it.
    I think Nokia would be a much better phone if they concentrated on their music player.

  • Updated to IS05 and message comes up tat I have not signed up for a data account (which was working fine before update) - suggestions please

    Messafe tirtled Cellular Data Account  - gives option buttons "later & "now". I select now and a sceen titles 'Cellular Data Account" appear, but never loads fully.

    Try resetting your iPad. Hold down the home button and the sleep/wake button till the Apple logo appears and then let it wake up.
