Subtitles changing extracted audio position

I'm having a problem with my inserted subtitles. When I add them for some strange reason it causes my extracted audio clips to move around to radom places. I can't figure out why this is happening. Any help would be appreciated. I'm trying to reach a deadline and this is slowing the process up big time.
Thanks in advance

Hi Sue,
Yes I worked on this all day yesterday and just started again on it today. I made sure the clips were locked but they are still moving and overlapping each other as well.

  • Extract audio ?

    Will someone please explain Extract Audio, Scroll to Playhead, Paste Over at Playhead, and Lock Audio at Playhead for me? When I don't understand a menu Option I am afraid to use it and have never tried any of them. I sort of understand Extract Audio but not Scroll to, Paste Over at, or Lock Audio at Playhead.
    Can audio be separated from picture and shifted in time? If so is it done by the clip or all clips in the timeline at one time?

    Hi Arthur!
    I cheated...I copied from the Help Section of iMovie ...
    Extracting the sound from a video clip
    Sometimes you may want to separate the audio track from a video clip. This is a good idea if you want to copy the audio to another location in your movie, or crop out any sounds. This technique is also useful if you recorded narration using your video camera and don't want to use the video.
    To extract sound from a video clip:
    Click the Timeline Viewer button (shown above).
    Select the video clip or clips whose audio you want to extract.
    Choose Advanced > Extract Audio.
    The extracted audio appears as a separate clip in audio track 1 of the timeline viewer.
    You can also adjust the volume of an extracted audio clip, move or copy it to a new location, change its length, and more.
    Cutting, copying, and pasting clips
    To copy or move your video and audio clips, you can use the Copy, Cut, and Paste commands, much as you do to edit text in a word-processing application. For example, you can use this technique to copy or move clips from the Clips pane to your movie, or to move clips around within a movie. You can also copy a video or audio clip from a different project into the one you're working on.
    To copy or move a clip:
    Select the clip or the part of it you want to cut or copy.
    To learn how to select part of a video clip, see Related Topics below.
    Do one of the following:
    To move the clip, choose Edit > Cut.
    To copy the clip, choose Edit > Copy.
    To paste the clip in your movie, move the playhead (shown below) where you want the clip to appear.
    Tip: If you want to paste the clip immediately after a specific clip in your movie or the Clips pane, select the clip you want it to appear after.
    Choose Edit > Paste.
    Note: When you position the playhead within a clip in your movie and choose Paste, the clip in your movie is split at the playhead and the pasted video (along with its soundtrack) or audio is inserted at that point. (Any video or audio that appears after the playhead is moved to the right in the clip or timeline viewer.)
    If you want to paste over existing video or audio in your movie, choose Advanced > "Paste Over at Playhead." The pasted clip replaces the existing video or audio to the right of the playhead instead of moving it to the right.
    Locking audio clips to video
    You can lock an audio clip to a particular point in a video clip so that when you move the video clip, the audio moves with it. This is useful if you want a sound effect, narration, or a song to always accompany a specific part of your movie.
    To lock an audio clip to video:
    If necessary, choose iMovie HD > Preferences, click General, and select the "Snap to items in Timeline" checkbox.
    Click the Timeline Viewer button (A, shown above).
    Drag the playhead (B, shown above) to the frame where you want the the audio to start.
    Tip: To precisely adjust the playhead position, press the Left or Right Arrow key to move the playhead one frame at a time. To move the playhead in ten-frame increments, hold down the Shift key while pressing the arrow key.
    Drag the audio clip so that its starting point lines up with the "ghosted" playhead (shown below).
    A yellow line appears and the edge of the clip automatically "snaps" against the edge of the "ghosted playhead" when you reach the frame you selected in step 3.
    Choose Advanced > "Lock Audio Clip at Playhead."
    Yellow "push pins" indicate that the audio is locked to the video.
    To unlock the audio, select the clip and choose Advanced > Unlock Audio Clip.
    Note: You can still change the location of a locked audio clip by dragging it. However, the video clip does not move with it, and iMovie automatically locks the audio clip to its new location.

  • How to split video and extracted audio clip at same time?

    I imported 10 min of DV from my Sony HC96 camcorder to iMovie 6.
    I selected a video clip and split it using cmd-T but the extracted audio clip below it did not split. How can I split both the video and underlying audio clip so I can drag the edge of the new video clip for editing by direct trimming and keep the audio dialogue in sync. I have already gotten the clip volume levels right in the extracted audio.
    This seems pretty basic editing but I must be missing something.

    Thanks, Sue. Let me see that I have this right. I split the video then the audio. I then selected and trimmed the video to the remove the 10-15 seconds I wanted to remove. To keep the dialogue in sync with the speaker's lips, I then selected and trimmed the audio to the same time as I trimmed the video. Then I dragged the audio clip back up to the new start of the trimmed video clip. I did this and the dialogue and lips seem to be in sync.
    I guess originally I had looked for a solution where I cut both clips at the same time and trimming one trimmed the other. But now I see I just need to do them separately. Thanks for the help, Sue!

    Hi Ralph:
    You can't do both at the same time, but you can do
    them one right after the other. Highlight the audio
    and split it after you split the video and be sure to
    keep the playhead in the same position.

  • Extract Audio Problems

    I am having a frustrating problem with iMovie. I am trying to make a video with sound playing over still images, bu every time i try to extract audio from the video i have, it will not work. It loads, taking 7-12 minutes, and then when i substitute the video clip for the photo, the sound does not show up. Why is this happening? The video footage, by the way, was shot with the built in iSight.

    I'm not quite certain, from your description, of exactly what you're trying to do..
    If you want to insert still photos in place of some of your video, first do what Bengt suggests, in order to extract all the audio from your video, which will put the audio in the Audio Track underneath the video.
    Then, if you want to insert a photo which is in your 'Clips Pane' within the "media" section on the right-hand side, do the following:
    (a) Choose the photo from your Library, and you can choose whether to tick the 'Ken Burns' box or not (..ticking it will apply a "zoom" effect to your photo..) then click the 'Apply' button. That generally adds your photo to the end of your movie.
    (b) With the photo still Selected (..i.e; it has a blue highlight over it..) hold down the Apple key and press 'C' to Copy the photo.
    (c) Position your Playhead where you want the photo to be inserted, and on the top-line menu choose 'Advanced' and 'Paste Over at Playhead' ..or just hold down the Shift and Apple keys and jab 'V' to Insert.
    The photo will now be inserted to replace the same duration of the original material in your video track, and the original, extracted, audio will be preserved.
    If - on the other hand - you're trying to insert some video to replace a photo, just do the same steps, but Copy, position the Playhead, and then 'Paste Over' the video clip to replace the previous photo.
    Using those steps, the amount of original material which is cut out, to be replaced by the new material, is automatically calculated by iMovie, and you don't have to worry about making sure that you've chopped out exactly the right amount to match whatever you're replacing it with.
    The audio, benath in the Audio Track, should be entirely unaffected.
    NOTE, though ..that if you then apply any transitions [except 'Overlap'] between the original material and the newly-inserted shots - this applies to adding transitions in any circumstances - then the entire video track will be shortened by the same duration as the duration of the transition(s), so if you're trying to keep the picture synchronised to the audio, then, er, sorry, but it'll drift out of sync!

  • How to make Audition automatically make separate "extracted audio" for each reference of a clip.

    Hi,
    I recently made the switch over to CC. When exporting a sequence from Premiere Pro to Audition in CS6, each clip in my timeling that was referencing the same source audio was assigned it's own "extracted audio." (i.e. - Lapel Extracted 1, Lapel Extracted 2, etc.).
    However, in CC when I bring it into Audition, all of my clips are only referencing the "original" extracted audio. I cannot find in my preferences how to change this. Am I making sence?
    How can I switch this?
    Thanks!

  • Audio position-

    I am using Audio Queues for playback and recording. For the playback, I need sometimes to start at a specific position, or to jump at a specific position.
    Is there a way to do that?
    Also, is there a way to retrieve the current position where the player is in the file.
    Thanks

    In case anyone is still looking for this information, I modified the SpeakHere Application to do both of these functions. Here are the I added to the AudioPlayer:
    - (void) setPlayPosition:(Float64) seconds startPlaying:(BOOL)startPlaying {
    AudioQueuePause (self.queueObject);
    AudioQueueReset (self.queueObject);
    startingPacketNumber = seconds * audioFormat.mSampleRate / audioFormat.mFramesPerPacket;
    [self setupPlaybackAudioQueueObject];
    if (startPlaying) AudioQueueStart (self.queueObject, NULL);
    - (UInt32) estimateTimeLapsed {
    UInt32 currentTime = (startingPacketNumber - (numPacketsToRead * kNumberAudioDataBuffers )) * audioFormat.mFramesPerPacket / audioFormat.mSampleRate;
    return currentTime;
    It's possible to get a TimeStamp from the buffer, but it get's messsed up after changing the play position. I haven't tried managing this with a Timeline.
    The estimateTimeLapsed method above calculates the time based on the current startingPacketNumber. StartingPacketNumber is the next packet to be read by one of the [3] buffers rather than the one playing, so it counts back to the one playing assuming all the buffers are active. It seems like a silly way to do it, but it's giving me all the accuracy I need right now.

  • Editing after extracting audio?

    Hi there,
    I am running iMovie HD, and have a question about editing.
    I extracted the audio from my video clip, and now I want to do some editing. However, whenever I make an edit to the video clip, the audio doesn't reflect the edit and immediately gets out of sync.
    Is there anyway to recombine the audio and video? Or, can I just make the audio take the same cuts as the video?
    I need to use the extracted audio, as I made some changes to it.
    Thanks for any help!

    Robert,
    The extract audio command really places a copy of a the audio from a clip into one of the two audio tracks. At the same time it lowers the volume level in the original video to zero.
    As you've discovered, once extracted, the extracted copy becomes it's own entity and will not reflect any further edits to the video clip.
    At this point you could reset the volume in the video to 100% and re-extract or try to edit your audio to reflect the changes to your video.

  • HT4016 How to extract audio from a movie that is already in my project without having to delete and re-import the movie?

    The article is
    "How to extract audio from a movie file"
    But it only tells you how to extract when you first drag the movie file into the project.  This much is obvious when a dialog presents you with a checkbox asking if you want to "Extract the audio track" ... Duh
    Here was my workflow:
    Dragged the movie file into my project
    I checked "Extract the audio track"
    I shifted the "Movie Start Time"
    Extracted audio track did not shift with the movie
    I deleted the extracted audio and played the audio directly from the movie
    Now, I need the audio extracted again at the current movie position
    I knew where this option was in the Logic 9 menus, but I'm having trouble finding it in Logic X
    Is this option still available, or has it been removed?

    Solved:
    I found the menu option for extracting or re-extracting the movie audio.  BTW, the original article:
    Logic Pro 9.1: How to extract audio from a movie file in 64-bit mode
    should really also state the menu command for extracting the audio, not just the procedure when first adding the movie to the project.
    Here's the menu command:
    File>Movie>Import Audio from Movie

  • Extract Audio Sample Rate

    Why does iMovie always extract at 44.1kHz when the audio in the dv stream is 48kHz. Is there some setting I've missed that will allow me to change this? Thanks.
    dual 800   Mac OS X (10.4.9)

    Hi RustyJames welcome to the forum!
    I asume you are going Share>QT>Sound to AIFF. There
    is an Options pull-down menu that offers a range of
    settings including 48kHz.
    I mean the actual files created by the "extract audio" command, the files which are in the Media folder within the iMovie file package.
    Thanks!

  • Extracted audio and GarageBand

    Happy New Year to everyone!
    Today I have been working with a very short video clip (3:24:24) taken Christmas eve. Unfortunately popping sounds can be heard in the audio track and as a result I extracted the audio in attempt to fix this. I copied the extracted audio to the Desktop and from there placed it in an empty track in GarageBand for fixing.
    My problem is that in GarageBand the audio clip is longer than prior to extraction. The initial length prior to moving it into GarageBand 3:24:24, but once in GarageBand is longer 3:42:43. This happens before I do anything to it. It is longer from the moment I place it inside GarageBand. Prior to this it has the proper length.
    I noticed this the first time I pasted the audio back into iMovie HD since the audio was out of sync!! I thought I did something wrong in GarageBand and so I went back and fixed another copy of audio clip with the same results.
    Also, also the audio is 16 bit.
    I don't understand why it is longer in Garageband. Any suggestions or help would be great!

    Happy New Year!
    After I wrote my message I went searching to the GarageBand 2 discussions and found this possible solution from a member named "hangtine":
    Q. How do I convert a sound with iTunes? (The Never-Fail™ method) neverfail
    A. Drag the sound file into the iTunes window, if it isn’t already there. Set iTunes’ Importing preference to AIFF, 44.1k, 16-bit. With the name selected in the iTunes window choose Convert to AIFF from under the Advanced menu.
    When the conversion is done a new file will be created and listed in the iTunes window (Convert doesn’t actually convert, it recreates in the new format). Select this new iTunes song and chose Show Song File from under the File menu. Drag this file into your GarageBand Timeline and it will play fine.
    I followed this advice with my audio clip, and my GarageBand-corrected audio clip was almost normal in length, although it was 4 secs. longer. Nevertheless, I was able to used it in iMovie.
    Since I still had an unaltered audio clip in iMovie, I synchronized (visually) the "changed" waveform with the waveform unaltered one. The video and sound was synchronized! Still, the audio clip had 2 additional seconds added at the begining and at the end. I plan to crop the audio and everything will be OK.
    I wish there was an easier way. I will try your suggestion with QuickTime.
    Thank you.

  • Extract audio for transfer to CD

    Is it possible to extract audio portion from an imported videotape (school concert), and burn audio to a CD? How...from a newbie. Thanks.

    ... actually, the audio is part of the recordings, right?
    simplest: just set the playhead at wanted position, hit Apple-T.. that splits the clip.. that split is seemless in playback, but you can now select just a portion of your big clip .. example: set to four positions, hit four times Apple-T = video in 5 parts.. select part 3, if that is the one you want..
    more advanced: in the advance menu, there's an 'extract audio command.. that mainly copy the included audio of oyur video into the audio track 1.. (and mutes the original audio in the video track)
    you're now allowed to 'edit' audio, split it (apple-t) add disolves (rubberband) .. etc.
    chapter markers is just a tool for DVD creation... no use for audio ..
    on an audioCD/iTunes, I would like to 'see' seperate tracks.. so cut your video into pieces (=you don't do it no harm... the cuts are seemless..), select clip, export as discribed, select another clip, export... repeat ... final result: a nice audioCD with 14 tracks.. or, whatever..
    another option: share project to Garageband... the Audio Processor in iLife.. you can 'spice up' the recordings.. (slight reverb, equilizing, etc) ..

  • Extracted Audio Question

    PLEASE PLEASE HELP ME, I'M SO FRUSTRATED!!!!
    I extracted ALL of the audio in my movie and sent it to the trash. I then exported the silent movie and burned it to DvD using idvd.
    NOW, it turns out I need the audio that was attached to many of the clips in the movie. I have many hours, and many hi-8 tapes of footage and do not have time to sort through it all to import the original footage again.
    I opened the project and copied the audio from the trash, then pasted it into mu imovie project. My problem is that now the audio is playing fine. BUT the video clips will not play at all. The clips are still there, the timeline for video and audio is activated, but the clips do not move. There is just a still image of the frame as the audio plays. If I manually move the cursor to different spots on the clips the still frame displayed changes. (So I believe the clips are still intact.) My computer is now running VERY slow, and I can not simply drag the cursor over the movie to manually play it.
    Any Ideas on how to get the movie to play properly????

    Hi Mochastix - my comment here may not help solve your problem, but for any future editing of the kind you did, consider this:
    When you 'extract' audio, the original audio in the video clips is not removed - it is simply muted. Thus it can be 'un-muted' again. If you want to create a soundless DVD, either select all of the clips and lower their audio volume to zero, OR more simply, uncheck the little box at the right-hand end of the video track. So, there was no need to trash the 'extracted' audio, nor was there a need to drag it back from the trash.
    As Sue suggests, it does seem that you are very low on storage space. If all else fails, trash the audio track again, and raise the audio level within the video clips. To do that, select all of the clips, and use the slider. See if that helps.

  • Extract audio from a DVD how to

    Is there a FREE and ease way to extract audio from a DVD?

    Set a tape recorder next to your speaker? Seriously, though - what kind of DVD? If it's a commercial DVD, it's copyright protected and people here shouldn't give you advice on how to do it. There are other places besides Apple's discussion forums to get that kind of info, and I don't see why this question belongs in "Using Mac OSX Leopard" in the first place.
