Subtitles for 9x16 and other non-standard aspect ratios?

We're producing several videos for a museum which will be shown on a vertical screen. We shot with our camera turned 90 degrees on its side, are editing that way and will create the DVD/MPEG4s that way. When they are shown the display will also be rotated. So far, so good.
I am told that we can also rotate subtitle placement 90 degrees as well, but cannot find how to do this. I have seen it done in other presentations as well.
How can I get the subtitles to run along the narrow side of our display?

The templates my have a few variations that use non-standard ratios, but you can specify any photo box ratio. You have the option to either right click and choose it from a list, or choose the custom option from that pull list, or use the "Size & Position" pane of the Aperture UI to specify an exact size, angle, and border thickness and color of a photobox. This works similar to the controls in Pages, but without some of the nice effects like transparency and drop shadows.
If you want to create custom layouts, read the "Working with Custom Themes" section on page 609 of the user manual (download it with the trial). The trial is good for 30 days, so why not give it a spin, and if you don't think it's worth the $199, then you can always delete it at no cost to you other than your time.

i am not yet an aperture user, but i am interested in switching to it to improve on the photo book quality WRT iPhoto.
i like very much to have photos with non-standard aspect ratios, either square or wide (like 3:1). these are cropped very badly by iPhoto; is it better in Aperture?

Non-standard aspect ratio

Currently, I am using iMovie '09 (version 8.0.6) and iMovie HD 6.0.4.
With both programs, I failed to import a quicktime movie that has aspect ratio 0.83 (1030:1240)
without getting a distorted output.
(I did read the help and I also googled a lot, to no avail. I also UNchecked the box 'automatic letterboxing', but it did not have any effect.)
My question now is: would the current versions of iMovie / HD allow me to import & edit such non-standard aspect ratio movies?
Or do I need some other program to do that?
If so, can you recommend something?
(I only need some basic editing capabilities such as clipping, adding audio tracks, titles, a few simple effects, etc.)

no version of iM did or do support non-standard video.
the obsolote FC/pro supported 'free' aspect ratios.
the actual FCPX only with a trick.
not sure, but I think Adobe Premiere (full version, not elements) supports non-standards too.
for just trimming and perhaps 'titles', Quicktime7Pro would do it - but has no effects, transitions etc. plus it is very un-convenient, compared to any designated editor.app

Non-standard aspect ratio possible?

This is a very novice question, but is it possible to edit and export to WMV, AVI or MPEG a movie that is completely square or in another non-standard aspect ratio?
I have a MOV that was captured (using snapzpro), but it is nearly square, and I need to edit it and output it to a WMV, AVI or MPEG...I don't even know if those formats support odd ratios...do they?

Make a sequence with a custom setting that's square.
As far as outputting goes, MPEG is fixed resolutions. I don't know about the PC formats.

How To: Use FCPX to create iPhone Portrait Movies (and other non-standard formats)

Goal: Use Final Cut Pro X 10.0.7 to produce a 640x1136 video (iPhone 5 Portrait). You can use these same steps to produce virtually any dimensions you want. My example is for the iPhone 5, in Portrait mode.
This information is available in various places, but you have to realy work to find it, so I thought I'd post a step-by-step guide here.
By the way, you might think you could just create a FCPX Project with your desired dimensions, but you can't (at least with 10.0.7). Projects only support certainly dimensions. But there are other ways, as the rest of this post describes:
1) Create an initial movie with the desired dimensions, to serve as a template. We'll call it "Template.mov". The only thing that matters is the dimensions. It can be in any codec FCPX understands, and virtually any length.
I'm using a 2 second video shot on my iPhone for the template. You could also create a blank image (.png, whatever) with the proper dimensions, copy and paste it into a new Quick Time Pro 7 window, and Export it using custom settings. There's lots of different ways to do this.
2) Drop Template.mov into a FCPX event.
3) Select Template.mov in the Event browser, and select File->Duplicate (or command-D). You probably could just edit "Template.mov", but it's a good idea to save it for reuse.
3) Change the name of the copied video. I'm using "iPhone Video".
4) Right-click "iPhone Video" and select "Open in Timeline".
5) If you made the Template video from a still image, you may need to change the duration (ctrl+D). You don't have to make it very long, but it needs to be longer than 1 frame. A few seconds should be enough.
6) Use this timeline like you'd use a project's timeline. Drop in new content, trim, transition, etc. There may be things you can't do in it, but I haven't found any yet. I'm guessing Chapters may not work, but I haven't tried them.
7) Note that when you drop new content into the timeline, it may size funny. That's because the default setting for "Spacial Conform" is "Fit". Simply select the newly-dropped content, and in the Video settings inspector, scroll down to "Spacial Conform" and change it. You could use "Fill", which fills the frame vertically, or "None", which uses the source's original height. Then crop/transform/whatever to get what you want.
8) When you're ready to render, select "iPhone Video" in the Event browser, then use the "Share" button. You want to use the "Export File" destination, which you may have to add. Pick your codec, and let 'er rip.
9) When the rendering is done, you should have a video in your desired dimensions.
That's all there is to it. Hope this helps someone.

PS: Don't ask why someone would want to create an iPod video using FCPX. The point is that you may need to create a video with non-standard dimensions at some point in time, and this is how to do it.

I suspect that anyone savy enough to be using FCPX has probably already figured out how to do this, either using my technique or another, so there probably isn't a real need for me to post this. For that matter, I may be the only person who cares about this at all. However, while I was trying to learn how to do all of this, I would have really appreciated having all the information in one place, so here goes.
If you want to create a video with unusual dimensions (like 640x1136) using my steps above, you'll need a "template" video first. Here's an easy way to create one, using any image editor, and QuickTime Pro 7.
1) Open QuickTime Pro 7 (QTP for short).
2) From the menu, select File->New Player. You'll get a window with just the bottom portion of the player, i.e. the playback controls.
3) Using an image editor, create a still image in the desired dimensions. You can use any image editor. It doesn't matter what the image contains (although it will end up showing as a thumbnail in FCPX).
4) Copy the image to the clipboard.
5) Switch back to QTP, and paste the image into the new player. Don't worry that there isn't a video window showing - just paste it into the window that has only playback controls. As soon as you do, the video window appears.
6) Advance to the end of the movie (the short, 1-frame movie), then hold down Command+V (paste) and keep holding it down to paste multiple images in. Watch the time advance. You could, if you want, just hold down Command+V until you get the length you want. But if you want a long video, there's an easier way:
7) When you reach a few seconds (or whatever duration your patience allows), select all (Command+A) and copy (Command+C). Then hold down Command+V to keep pasting in the longer clips. Wait until you reach a longer duration, then repeat the process. So, for example, 1 second, then 10 seconds, then 1 minute, then 10 minutes, then 1 hour. Or whatever you want.
8) Save the video however you want. I usually use File->Export with H.264, with Quality set to "Least". Just make sure you don't let it change the dimensions. If you resized the player window, depending on which "save" or "export" method you've chosen, it might default to the resized dimensions, so double check that to make sure.
That's it. You now have a template video you can use with my previous post(s).

Just curious:
Despite Mac's strength against malicious software, there are some things that are not affected by hardware, such as keyloggers and the like.
What type of software is there that can protect against this or detect it for Macs?

The Mac's strength against malicious software has nothing to do with Apple's hardware, but rather OS X. Keep in mind that Apple's current hardware is now exactly the same as any other manufacturer's.
There are keyloggers that will run in OS X, but the only way to have them running on your machine is to install them yourself. In order to install any of these applcations and have them run in a manner that would put other accounts on your machine at risk, one would have to install them as an admin user, and this would necessitate authenticating as such.
In other words, you are your own best protection against malicious software. Just don't install it.
There are many people researching potential vulnerabilities in OS X which would allow a non-admin user to install and run malicious software, either locally or over a network (or the internet). As soon as potential vulnerabilities are found, they are reported, and Apple soon after releases an update to "plug the hole." Note that there are no known cases of these vulnerabilities ever being exploited.

How can I get Mail sounds to turn off for junk and other non-Inbox new mail?

This week my Mail sound started going off for all types, incessantly, including receipt of the much Junk filtered out of the Inbox into Junk. Formerly I received alert sounds only for new Inbox mail. I have unchecked the "Play sounds for other actions" in Mail Preferences which does no good. Any suggestions will be welcomed. Thanks.

Did you install any software which includes or is a notification program such as Growl? Those may override any options you've set in the Preferences.

I have also noticed the same "problem". I do not fully understand the impact of using the same ID on multiple computers and devices if I want to keep them all in sync.

* exactly what software and software versions is the problem with ? You appear to be a Windows 8 user, but presumably the Kaspersky software may be applicable to other Windows versions, which Kaspersky software is this tested with ?
* What is he exact error message or warning that Kaspersky generates in this situation ?
* is the problem documented elsewhere, preferably in a public open site, if so maybe you could provide a link
* can you detail simple but exact detailed Steps To Reproduce that will enable others to test out this problem and solution.

Read Only for "Group" and "Others" via SMB

I see when Windows vista users of my OS X 10.5.8 server save a file to the server, the permissions show on the server as Read & Write for the owner and Read Only for 'Group' and 'Others'.
Is there a way I can make the OS X server always make 'Group' and 'Others' always be Read & Write?

It's using a shared component LOV cleverly called LOV_YN which consists of a static LOV with
1 Display=Yes, Return=Y
2 Display=No, Return=N
The settings in the LOV section on the item iteself:
Named LOV: LOV_YN
Display Extra values: No Dynamic translation: Not translated
Number of columns: 2 Display null: No
Null display value is blank as is null return value
Item was setup as a radio group and was only converted over to a select list to work around this issue. Let me know what else you need and thanks again.

Skype for 8520 and other BB version's / Question needed to be answered by Blackberry support for everyone!

This is a question that seriously needs answering for myself and other BB customer's.
Personally the only reason I have a BB is because I can have window's live messenger on it, But WLM is closing in April and updating to skype, Meaning everyone who use's WLM that their contact's will be going there and not to any other network!
Now I've read from what I've researched that BB maybe will be joining with oovoo something like that, Why when that is not where people's MSN/Hotmail contact's will be going ?
BB paying customer's to BB product's want access to there MSN/Hotmail contact's not to be diverted to another service that does not have their MSN/Hotmail contact's.
Also I have seen that skype or something along those line's will be available for the new BB 10, So what about earlier product's such as BB curve 8520 that I personally own myself that has nothing wrong with it?
So us paying BB customer's are going to be excluded because we don't have a brand new version of BB due to there being nothing wrong with the BB's we have? Which so were going to be penalized?
I would like these question's answered please because I am not happy about this and I'm sure a lot of other BB customer's are not too, It's not anyone's fault that WLM is going to be taken away but atleast make sure that BB customer's have a skype app to access their MSN/Hotmail contact's and can conversant with them directly like WLM.
Honestly I love my BB and wouldn't be without it purely because I'm able to log in WLM when I like, Where ever I am and talk to my contact's directly, Not all people have BB's and can not be added to BB messenger which is why WLM is a priority on BB app's for BB customer's, Is something going to be done about this? The answer is actually simple...example...6.0.0.415 for a 9860 is very different from 6.0.0.415 for a 9670. Hence, the app developers must port their apps to every combination of (usually) major OS level (e.g., 6.0, 7.0, 7.1) and specific device model number. That's a lot of combinations to which they must port their app...and many choose to not do them all. But the choice is the app developers.

Have you tried resetting your iPad? You will not lose any data. Reset the iPad by holding down on the sleep and home buttons at the same time for about 10-15 seconds until the Apple Logo appears - ignore the red slider if it appears on the screen - let go of the buttons. Let the iPad start up.
