Subtitles in iTunes 11.

I have a movie file that has subtitles in multiple languages, however, when played in iTunes 11, only one option is available.  How do I enable the other subtitle tracks?

That's probably because your iMac or MacBook doesn't have a secondary GPU.
On my MacBook Pro (Retina model, early 2013) I see this pane:

  • Lack of subtitles on iTunes vs more subtitles on DVDs

Why do Apple sell far more movies and television shows on iTunes that have far less Closed Captions than if you bought them on DVD??
Sometimes a series of movies on iTunes would have one or two of them with CC but the other do not, for example on iTunes
For example: On iTunes, Spider-Man and Spider-Man 2 will have CC but Spider-Man 3 do not, same with Iron Man and Iron Man 2 have CC but Iron Man 3 do not.
Yet on DVDs, all three movies would have means of subtitles for the deaf, ALL in the series.
On iTunes, only Back to the Future do have CC but not the last 2, yet on DVDs, all of the triology would have subtitles for the Deaf.
Same for television series, for example the 1st series (known as seasons in American-English) of Red Dwarf (and again same for the second series/season) the first episode do not have CC but the rest do.
And other thing, most people used CAPS LOCK in email or discussion boards or in text messages, and gets told off that using caps lock is like shouting, yet some of the movies on iTunes have some of the CC in caps, examples being Jumpin Jack Flash, and When Worlds Collide. I found it annoying trying to read subtitles that were in caps letters for the whole movie.
Then there's the fact that most movies and television on iTunes seems to lack more subtitles for the deaf when compare to DVDs.
You could get Star Trek: The Original Series, Star Trek: Deep Space Nine, Star Trek: Voyager, need I go on...? with subtitles for the deaf on DVDs, but on iTunes, it seems so far, only ST:TNG Season 1 & 2 have CC, mind you I haven't downloaded them so I don't know if they're any good.
Disney's Planes as well as Cars which have subtitles for the deaf on DVDs, seems to have no subtitles on iTunes???
If downloads is supposed to be the future and DVDs is going to history books, how come downloads seems so backwards? Have Apple gave up the rights of the disabilies, including the deaf who needs more subtitles as well as proper subtitling (in that case of those iTunes movies that are in CAPS LOCK)!
I'm starting to think it was a mistake for me to use Apple, iTunes, and so on, well I got one good news for Apple, even if I can't enjoy movies on my first generation iPad, then they're lucky i'm not going to jump ship as I still use my iPad for a lot of work, but unless there are more subtitles for the deaf on the same level as DVDs, I'm going to stick with the good old DVDs!!
I don't understand why is there a lack of effort to add subtitles for the deaf on iTunes??

Apple may not have any control over getting movies to sell, but they COULD try to encourage the studios/distributors to see that if downloads is going to be the future, replacing DVDs, then the studios could make a little extra money if they sell their downloaded movies with subtitles, because usually deaf people tend to not bother buying any movies if it got no subtitles.
Apple could say to the studios "If you want to sell your movies via iTunes, and get more money for your box office movies, could you please make an effort to put subtitles on your movies for the deaf people!"  If Apple and other services, like Netflix, could say to the studios "We're not selling those movies unless there are subtitles on them." The studios could lose money if they can't get to sell their movies as downloads.
Surely Apple must've got some friends in high places that could also help encourage studios to make an effort.

  • Where can I buy documentaries in Spanish or with Spanish subtitles in iTunes

Where can I buy documentaries in Spanish or with Spanish subtitles in iTunes ?

I type German on the US keyboard all the time without having to switch keyboard layouts:
    option-u followed by a u o (and other letters, too) gives you ä ü ö ï
    option-s gives you ß
    option-2 gives you €
    You can even to French:
option-` followed by, for example e, gives you è
option-e followed by, for example e, gives you é
    option-c gives you ç
    option-i followed by e gives you ê
There are [many more such combinations|http://www.usingmac.com/2007/12/12/100-mac-keyboard-shortcuts-for- creating-symbols] that yield other special characters.
You can set up the built-in spell check to automatically detect what language you are writing in and you're set
Personally I find the US keyboard much nicer to work with. I'm sure your daughter will get used to it and your wallet will thank you.

  • What is the best way to create an MP4 (.M4V) that will play with forced subtitles in iTunes, Apple TV, and all iOS devices?

I've begun ripping my blu rays to digital format so I can store them on my NAS and access them from any device. Movies without subtitles work great, I simply use MP4 passthrough and all is well. I'm having issues with videos that have forced subtitles. I'm assuming I need to mux the video, audo and subtitle streams into an .M4V. I'm not sure how to do this. What format must the subtitle be in? SRT, AAS? Will Subler work?
My intention is that have the subtitles show no matter what. I don't want to fiddle with enabling them and disabling them. I want to watch the movie in itunes or an iOS device and have the subtitles show up without doing anything.

We cannot help you on this board. What you ask is illegal to do in the United States. As Lyssa says, "You will have to search elsewhere for help." However, purchasing the movies from the iTunes Store is a legal option.

  • Can one add subtitles to Itunes downloaded movies without CC?

I recently downloaded a movie in french on Itunes that did not have closed captioning. Is there anyway I can add (french) subtitles to the film? I am learning french and I need to read the titles to fully understand the dialogue. Thanks!

Hold down the option key while starting iTunes, then select library.  Your library is stored in your Home > Music > iTunes > iTunes Library.itl file
iTunes can be picky about mp3 formatting and not all mp3s files are created the same.

  • How can I find movies with subtitles from iTunes for iPad?

    The problems are two:
    1) Using an iPad, can I find subtitled only movies? If were possible, how?
    2) Ever with an iPad, it's possible setting on/off subtitles in movie? If were possible, how?
    Thanks,
    Cristiano.

You turn it on by going to settings-video-closed captioning=on.
If a video has captioning, should have the closed captioning symbol on the video description screen in iTunes store.
You can get software to add captions to your own videos.
    Handbrake:
HandBrake can now include subtitle tracks that can be turned on and off, instead of rendering them onto the video track permanently (which also reduces video compression). This means you can include Closed Captioning data from DVDs and TV broadcasts, or find SRT text subtitle files on the 'net and include them. When using the Matroska container, you can also store the graphical subtitle images (VobSubs) from a DVD as a separate track. An added benefit is that multiple subtitle tracks can be included in the same output video.

  • Subtitles in iTunes Store. TV shows??

Are there any TV shows with subtitles or CC for sale in the iTunes Store? If not, is there any way to include them on my own.
    Thanks

TV Shows are not currently available in the Canadian store. (Not Apple's fault...copyright issues.)
If you live in Canada, you cannot purchase from the U.S. store. (Unless you posess a credit card with a U.S. bank and that card has a U.S. mailing address.)
Apple hasn't said, and we don't know when TV shows will be available in other stores.
    Sorry...

  • How to enable subtitle in iTunes?

iTunes 10.5.3(Lion 10.7.2) 64bit, to play .m4v files which I used HandBrake to convert from my own DVD. I can get my selection for audio and subtitle works fine in VLC and XBMC. But I failed in iTunes.
BTW, I have already enabled iTunes->Preferences->Playback->Subtitle language.
Any hint for this topic? Thanks in advance.

Or maybe I should ask which kind of subtitles are supported by iTunes?

  • Missing Subtitles from iTunes to AppleTV-2

    Hello all,
Step by step I will explaine my problem.
I just downloaded a movie, extracted it, using "HandBrake" I changed it from .MKV to .mp4. Then I imported to iTunes. Since then greek subtitles work perfectly.
When I turned from iTunes to Apple TV-2, I cannot see the subtitles.
What is wrong with that...?? Any idea..?
    Thanks in advance

Guys I am a bit confused...with all those tech words that you are using about transforming movies. Which actually I would like to know in which site you go and download all that and transforms with the subtitles.
However let me start with just the movies from the Apple TV. I downloaded yesterday the movie"someone like you" from the Apple TV itself. I have the atv 2 and I have bought it from US and i operate it in Greece.I have put the language in Greek and also the language of subtitles in Greek too. But the movie did not had any subtitle at all.
All this fush you are talking about here maybe is workable with subtitles only for the section of the movies in the atv which states " movies with Greek subtitles" or it was supposed to be showing Greek subtitles to all the movies you download from any categorie?
I would really appreciate your lights here guys.
    Thanks in advance!

  • Subtitles and iTunes rules of the road?

I have some television shows that are in mp4 or m4v format. I also have the appropriate srt (subtitle) files. Can anyone tell me how to marry the subtitles in such a way that iTunes will recovnize nd use them? I dont care if they are 'burned' in. I just want the subtitles and I have wasted dayw with various combinations.
Anyone know how to make iTunes/ QuickTime see subtitles?

There is more than one way to do subtitles in QuickTime.
    1. First, you should install Perian, see http://perian.org/ yes the project is 'closed' but it still works fine. This will let you use .srt files in QuickTime and probably also iTunes.
    2. QuickTime and iTunes can also use subtitles which are stored inside an m4v file as a text (subtitle) track. To do this you would have to convert your subtitles and video file, this would be the best option also if you want to use it on an iPad or Apple TV. There is a cheap utility called iSubtitle to do this see http://www.bitfield.se/isubtitle/index.html
    3. Yes you can burn in the subtitles to the movie so they are part of the video itself. There is a cheap utility called SubMerge for doing this see http://www.bitfield.se/submerge/index.html

  • Subtitle with Itunes (windows). please help.

    Hi,
I spent quite some time looking for an answer. I've downloaded an avi movie with a srt subtitle, all I want is watching the movie on itunes. I found plenty of apps on mac like isubtitle and submerge that could do that , but couldn't find any for windows!
could someone please guide me into how to watch a downloded movie on itunes with subtitle? (streamed via apple tv)
I find dropping my movies in itunes home sharing and watching them on a flat screen using apple tv is very convenient! the subtitle is my only issue.
    thank you,

handbrake does a great job adding srt to avi movies when it convert them to mp4 or m4v
    handbrake is free
