Subtitles in movies

I have an avi movie file and a subtitle srt file.  When I synchronise them the new file shows the subtiles but with questionmarks or little boxes, NOT letters.  Is it a problem with language or something else ?
I have tried different programs but no result.
I would like to ask what is the best program to do this quickly and correct.
Thank you.

It sounds like an encoding problem.  What app are you using?  Make sure the font is set to Geeza Pro.

  • Closed Caption or Subtitles on Movies in iTunes for AppleTV

I bought an Apple TV Dec 2008 but am waiting for Subtitles or Closed Captions so that I can watch a movie. Does anyone know when they are going to appear? I am nearly deaf. I did rent one that I thought I saw CC on but it turned out it was not. Right now I have to use Netflix while my ATV collects dust. Nice "screen saver" but pretty expensive. Thanks.

I'm disappointed that I can't get the closed caption/subtitles on movies I've rented on iTunes. I'm pretty sure they exist, and if I had the physical DVD I could verify this. Will subtitles be available on Apple TV when they are available on the original? I tried the CC/subtitles on/off and nothing happened.

  • I would like to know about the subtitles of movies...

    Hi!
I'm from Greece an i would like to know about the subtitles of movies.
Specially, how i can know that the movie i would like to buy or rent has greek subtitles?
    Thank you in advance

I don't think there's a lot of technical information in those specs.  And most of these questions aren't straight forward.
Easiest first, the color temp is around 5500-6000K, a little cooler than sunlight and will vary depending on power.
The flash duration is a bit more vague and depends on when you draw the line (consider it to be off).  It can change the specs significantly.  The full power spec from Canon puts it at about 1/800 for the 580exII, but anyone who has tried to freeze motion at full power will tell you that's false.  I find it to be more like 1/200.  You can losely extrapolate the lower power times as flashes simply double duration to double power.
Actually, I found this website that has some info on the 580II durations, which should get you in the ballpark for the 600.

And David Hobby had a great article on it at Strobist:

There's even more technical discussions you can dig up if interested.

  • How to load external subtitles in mov files (in QT)?

    Hi everybody,
When I play an avi file, QT is able to load external subtitles (I've Perian installed). However, this week, I downloaded a file from apple, saved it as a mov file and created a subtitle file for it. Then, I put both files in the same directory and used the same name for them (one .mov and the other .srt). When I play it (with QT), the subtitle file doesn't load. Does anybody know what is happening? Is is a problem with mov files? Or is it a problem with files downloaded from apple (some kind of lock?!)?
    Thanks

  • How do I get subtitle for movie without it?

I watched Game of Throne in DVD version from netflix, and really enjoy it. Recently purchased the digital version of the series from iTunes. However, there are no subtitle. Am I just out of luck, or can I do something to get subtitle in iTunes. As a non native english speaking person, having subtitle is extreme important for me. 40$ with no subtitle support is really ****** purchase.

    Tampora,
The listing for movies in the iTunes Store includes the information about subtitles.  Below is an example of a movie with subitles in English.
If the movie does not have the subtitles that you want, do not buy or rent it.

  • Soft subtitles in movies and Front Row problem solved

    Hi,
Sorry for this long post but I hope this will help other users of Front Row.
This is how I create a testmovie.mov file from an DVD, TS_FOLDER or other source and the subtitles (soft) will work in Front Row, Quicktime, iTunes, without Perian or other special plugin. In my case the subtitle is NOT burn into the video. It is a track in the testmovie.mov file.
Also I use Elgato turbo h.264 HD to speed up coding. Not necessary.
    1. Create a .m4v movie file (h.264 codec)
In my case I start the application that comes with Elgato turbo h.264 HD device, called Turbo.264.HD
    2. Drop the DVD, TS_FOLDER or other video to convert, onto Turbo.264.HD application or other video converting application.
    3. Click on the little "i" info symbol and the select Audio. The source maybe contains different languages. Click OK.
    4. Select Format. In my case "Apple TV" format (I will use this video on my Mac Mini). Click Start. After a while the video is finished. In this example I call it testmovie.m4v
    5. Download subtitles from Internet. Google: subtitles download
    6. Open the testmovie.m4v in RoadMovie application. This application works for me, but there may be others. http://www.bitfield.se/roadmovie
    7. In RoadMovie, click on Subtitles button and then open the downloaded subtitle file. In this example called testmovie.srt Also, click on the "little eye" Preview. In this view you can adjust the time offset for the subtitle to sync with the video.
    8. In RoadMovie select "Export for: Flattened". This will create a testmovie.mov file with a new subtitle track in it, without ecoding the video.
    9. Open testmovie.mov in, in my case, Quicktime Pro and the select Show Movie Properties.
    10. Select the video track and set the Transparency to Composition. Layer 0
    11. Select the subtitle track and set Transparency to Straight Alpha. Layer 0
    12. Save changes and close Quicktime Pro
    13. Move the testmovie.mov to Movies folder
    14. Start Front Row and select Movies->Movies Folder->testmovie.mov
    Voila!
    /rob

So, as far as I can tell, it's a one-or-the-other situation. Either Front Row doesn't display subtitles (actually, no video at all), or it does (with this workaround). Can't seem to toggle them. If anyone knows of a better way...
So, good job in finding a (multi-step, multi-application, convoluted) way to get this to work, but I'd hardly call this "solved." Don't get me wrong, I'd have never figured this out in a million years. Just...not quite ideal, is it?
I gave Plex a spin, and while it does offer the ability, in theory, to toggle subtitles, I haven't been able to get it to work, either with with this trick or without. I can't believe this is so hard to get right...Apple, if you're listening, there are people who use Front Row. Keep working on it! How about using that middle button of the remote for bringing up an options menu for the currently playing track, rather than duplicating the play/pause button?
Sorry, just frustrated; I finally got a Mac Mini for hooking up to the TV, and now I'm discovering how hard this is.

  • Subtitles on movie rentals

I'm thinking about buying AppleTV. Does anyone know if movies rented from iTunes can show subtitles?
    Thanks

You can search for movies that include subtitles by using the iTunes Store Power Search (2nd link under the Quick Links section of the store).
In the Power Search screen select movies from the pull-down menu to indicate that you are searching for movies. You will then see a checkbox for `Search for movies that contains closed captioning`.
I should note that at the moment there are not many of these, the store only has 93 titles with subtitles of which 44 are available for rent (I found this using Power Search).

  • Does Apple TV provide subtitles on movies streamed by Netflix?

I am DEAF and need subtitles or closed captions for the hearing impaired in order to watch movies -- or TV. These are two different things. Subtitles typically are options found on the Disc Menu: English, French, Spanish, etc. Some Disc Menus also provide for Closed Captions. However, some Discs provide Closed Caption Information embedded in the Disc that can be read by a TV and shown on screen when the TV's Closed Caption option is "On". Just what does Apple TV provide from streaming movies from iTunes or Netflix? Can I get subtitles? Can I get Closed Options?
I have a new Sony LCD Bravia TV that has both Closed Captions and Netflix buttons on the remote.
The Sony TV also can connect to my Wireless network in which I have an iMac 3.4 Ghz Intel Core i7 processor with OS 10.7.2.

I have had subtitles with Netflix without problems  for aover a year. . However, recently I am getting closed captions if I have the subtitle option turned ( CC turnrd off) on on the ATV2. I turn it off, and they are gone and regular subtitles  in a foreign film are there, no problem. Answer for this quirkiness?

  • Nordic countries-No subtitles in Movies

Skip buying AppleTV2, since ITUNE store does not have movies with Nordic subtitles.
skip Itune store for movies, since Nordic is ignored.
Buy BoxeeBox instead and get the movies from the local reps re same movies--and get subtitles.
I planned to get me a new IMAC, but skipped that.
I planned to get me a new IPHONE4S but skipped that
I live in the Nordic region and will move away from Itune lock in.
Apple force me out from Apple.

    jsurfer777,
If they were included as closed captioning, it is discussed in the iPod Touch User's Guide.
    http://manuals.info.apple.com/enUS/iPod_touch_FeaturesGuide.pdf
If they are embedded in the video, there is no way to filter that out while it is playing.
    Hope this helps,
    Nathan C.
