Subtitling applications

Can anybody recommend an efficient application that will hard-code subtitle files onto video? I have tried two so far, both of which have serious problems.
Aimersoft Video Converter allows you to set a font and a point size for subtitles, but ignores the point size actually selected, and always reverts to its own preference, which is enormous. The company's response for the last couple of years has been that they are working on it.
Submerge has two problems: it takes up to ten times longer to export an .mp4 file to .mov format than it does from, say, an .avi file, and in rendering an .mkv file it virtually grinds to a halt. It is also afflicted by a random bug that sometimes (often) renders the actual subtitles at a much lower resolution than the image, resulting in pixelated letters.
Any suggestions for a simple application that actually does what it's supposed to gratefully received!

I did refer the Submerge question to the makers, and didn't get any kind of useful response (see below). I should probably have mentioned that I convert to .mov files, with a view to burning DVDs. The oddest thing about this problem is that I can export the same file twice, and on the first exported file the titles will be in lower resolution, and on the next, with no change intervening, they will be perfect. I've even had it happen halfway through...
I've actually tracked down an exchange of emails with the makers from about 2 years, which makes mention only of .mkv files as well as of differences in the overall quality of the rendering, but the same problem has for some time also been occuring with other formats, such as .avi.
QUESTION: I am struggling with the following incomprehensible problem on an iMac running OSX 10.5.8 and using Submerge 1.9.6 (65). When adding subtitles to .mkv video files, I use the following Export settings: Video: Apple Intermediate Comopressions; Quality: Medium. Sound: Apple Lossless. The problem is (and it's hard to explain without sending you still sample images) that the resulting QuickTime Movie file is of variable quality. Let me try to explain. Say I export two episodes of a TV serial, using the exact same settings. When I examine the stream information for both files, they appear quite similar (this is a real example): Episode 1: Bit rate 30.43 Mbps Video: Apple Intermediate Codec, 1280x720, ~23.976 fps, 29.94 Mbps Audio: Apple Lossless, 44.1 kHz, 491 kbps Episode 2: Bit rate 27.58 Mbps Video: Apple Intermediate Codec, 1280x720, ~24.187 fps, 27.10 Mbps Audio: Apple Lossless, 44.1 kHz, 478 kbps.
However, when I play the two files, Episode 1 is crystal clear and sharp, with proper colour saturation, while Episode 2 is of apparently lower quality and slightly overexposed; you can tell the difference most easily from the subtitle text, which shows clear pixelation of the letters. Is there anything in these figures which would explain such a huge difference in quality (and believe me, it is huge)? One other highly confusing factor, which is also perhaps a clue, is that the first two seconds of Episode 2 are nice and sharp; suddenly, three seconds in, the quality collapses. You can judge this by the sharpness of the subtitle letters against the black opening background, as they go from being sharp to showing pixelation in the space of a few seconds. I hope you can help with this problem, as I am frankly baffled by its apparently irrational and random quality."
ANSWER: I have no clue at all why that happens. Why in the world are you exporting to Apple Intermediate? Any particular reason?

I'm working on a DVD of HMS Pinafore for a client of mine (School) and have been asked to add subtitles to the DVD so that people can sing along. I manually entered the entire libretto as subtitles.
I spent 2 days entering the subtitles ...and after adding a menu ...the damn project has crashed and refuses to open.
After another day of unsuccessfully trying to get it to open - I've given up and re-exported from premiere.
The question is, can I grab my subtitles from the old project and drop them into the new one? I don't fancy doing them all again.

Absolutely.
Using a text editor is the easiest way - Textpad (www.textpad.com) is a great & free one (nagware) that out-performs anything like Notepad by a wide margin.
Set timecode in, timecode out & subtitle and you're done.
Best of all this will remain as a text file and can be re-imported with ease in case of disasters. Plus it is much simpler to edit (delete faulty title, make changes, save

Creating Subtitles for Feature Film Documentary

I am finishing up editing work on a Brazil documentary, and I am looking for the best advice in adding subtitling in FCP. In searching the forums, I have came across this,

Is this a better way to create subtitles other then just creating a text layer in FCP and creating a text block through the text generator for every line of text?
Is NOT recommended to create subtitles in FCP because it will embed them into the video once exported?
My main question is, what is the best way to create subtitles for a feature length film that is edited in Final Cut?
Appreciate any advice as our deadline is coming!

That would be to create a standardized .smi file that can be read by many different subtitle applications.
Looking for a method that will give us the best options for distributing the film. Not having to re-do the entire output of the film to change languages, re-edit subtitling.< </div>
Umm, how exactly would you release the project in three different languages without creating three different versions? Or at least three different subtitle files?
Would that link I previously posted, or even using DVD SP give the best option, just dropping in a different DVD SP title stream? < </div>
DVD is a terrible way to deliver subtitles, IMO. Just bring one home and watch it. But there's a huge difference between open and closed subs and open and closed captioning, too.
There is no best solution that applies to all distribution media. You must decide on the delivery format and then work backwards.

What Application for Subtitles?

Hello,
I need to subtitle a foreign-language film. I realized that if I do the subs in DVDStudio Pro I'm not able to move the stream of subtitles all together (so, if the editing of a scene changes a bit the subs will be all off and I'll need to move them all one by one).
Is there another application I can use to make subtitles and then import them into DVDSP?

I have found it effective to create or edit subtitles in Word or Excel. There is a sample of the correct 3-column format i the DVDSP manual. This allows you to make changes to the document and simply re-import each time you make a change.

Subtitles are not getting displayed while playing movies

Hi,
Recently I have upgraded with Max OS X 10.6 Snow Leopard. After this upgrade whenever I play movies in my VLC player, I am getting a message as "freetype: failed to load font file /System/Library/Fonts/LucidaGrande.dfont" and then the subtitles are not displayed.
Can someone advise how to resolve it? I tried to download LucidaGrande.dfont from internet. But I couldnt find one. Please help.

Hello, Ravi & welcome to the forums.
Lucida Grande is included with Mac OS X.
Check and validate all of your fonts with Apple's Font Book (look in the Applications folder). Search for Lucida Grande to be sure it was properly installed. Find and remove duplicates as well.
Also, don't hesisate to perform wholesale deletion of old and/or little used fonts - be skeptical of anything that has come from Office 2008, including those related to an Equation Editor installation.
Finally, be sure all the apps you are using are compatible with SnowLeopard. Check with their authors for updates.

Doesn't open with application I want

I want to open all .smi files with Text Wrangler. The computer thinks the .smi files are disk image files whereas they are just subtitle files similar to srt files. However, when I choose GetInfo and select Text Wrangler and choose "Change all files to open with this type", I get a question box asking me whether I want to open all files with Disk Image. If I choose "Yes", then I get Disk Image as the default application, and if I choose "Cancel", I still get Disk Image.
In other words, it doesn't let me choose Text Wrangler to open all files of this type (.smi).
What should I do?

I fixed this problem. What I did was I clicked to open a file. I chose "other" for the application I wanted the file to open with. Then after that a dialog box opened called "Choose Application". In this window, I chose "All Applications" for "always open with".
Then I chose Text Wrangler from the Applications list. Then I clicked "Open".
After that I right-clicked an .smi file from a Finder window and chose "Get Info" for that file. After that, Text Wrangler came up as the first choice in the list, not Disk Image, and I was able to select Text Wrangler as the default application that opens all files of that type (.smi).
So the trick was to change the "enable" part in the "Choose Application" dialog box (obtained by choosing "other" when selecting the application to open the file with) and changing "Recommended Applications" to "All applications".
After that, everything works fine and I can change the default application using Get Info.

Arabic text in my web application using iText..

I'm having a problem with rendering arabic text on the page, is there a way to print arabic text outside of a PdfPTable ?? I need to print a simple text like the title of the report , the subtitle and so on... please guys I need an answer...

CS4 Blu-ray subtitles not displayed correctly

Hi all,
I have been trying to find anything regarding my issue with Blu-ray subtitles using Google and the search function on this forum, but I could not find anything about it.
I have a CS4 Blu-ray project with one main timeline and a few other timelines (to be "extras" on the Blu-ray). On the main timeline I imported two subtitle tracks from a Text file and chose the default import settings in Encore. The first subtitle track is English and the second subtitle track is Dutch, but it also happens when I just import one subtitle track.
The other timelines (for the extras) do not contain any subtitle track (as they do not require it), but the issue also appears when I only added the main time line (as first play) without any menus etc.
The issue is that at first the subtitles seem to display correctly when a Blu-ray burnt from this project is played on a standalone Blu-ray player (Panasonic DMP-BD30 with latest firmware). However, when I skip to another chapter (using the remote's "Next" or "Previous" button), or fast forward or rewind the video on the player the subtitles are gone and will never return. Also when the main timeline is played without any skipping or fast forwarding etc. the subtitles suddenly disappeared and reappeared after some time.
When checking the imported subtitles in the Encore project's time line display, all subtitles are in place.
Additionally, the Blu-ray player's "Subtitle" button does not bring up a selection of available subtitles (which it does on other commercially available Blu-rays), while the timelines allowed actions are set to "All" (the default).
I have also checked the Encore project's "Sources" folder and found .png images for all of the subtitle texts I imported, so it seems that all subtitles are available.
Does anyone have seen this issue before and know how to solve it?
Note: it might be of interest that the main timeline is a single H.264 encoded video file of approx. 7Gb playing for approx 45 minutes. The format is 1080/50i (PAL HDV in the resolution 1440x1080).

The short answer is that you can't use a subtitle menu successfully until Adobe does an Encore update which was working in a special build that I saw at NAB but never made it info a formal release.
The problem is that the generated Blu-ray instructions for selecting the subtitle (and audio) tracks is just plain wrong. The way it was supposed to work is that a GPR (general purpose register) was supposed to retain the selected value, but among other things the code always immediately clears the register after saving the correct value.
There was a similar but different problem in CS4 and we devised a solution with our BluStreak Premaster application, by post-processing the Encore build folder prior to burning or replication.

However to fix the CS5 code would require re-multiplexing of the menus, at which point we gave up, since we don't have a Blu-ray multiplexer. Don't consider going back to CS4, however, since in most other respects the CS5 navigation is far superior.
So your best bet is to ping on Adobe and ask them, when are you going to release this fix?
With these bugs, the only way to properly set audio and subtitle tracks is with the remote functions themselves, or by using set stream and link directly to the main video from a normal menu.

Having the same problem. I'm watching all of my movies without subs now, because transcoding kills the 5.1 audio (no problems with 2 channel audio). A workaround is posted in the comments of the pms-svn package.
I will post the URL to this thread to another thread with probably the same problem (mplayer/x264). I have not yet seen a real solution to this, and I'm not really familiar with the bugzilla's from both projects.

Another workaround might be to trick pms into using ffmpeg or vlc rather than mencoder. I'm also streaming to a ps3 - I didn't try it, but it could be as easy as temporarily changing settings inside the profile for a ps3-client.

Question: Why does DVDSP "hang: when adding subtitles

I'm having a real problem adding subtitles to my 3.7 GB project. It's all built and I was in the process of adding subtitles to the 1 hr 30 minute film. Yesterday it worked fine, copying and pasting from a text application into subtitles I'm making as I go, but today it's been a nightmare.
I find after only two or there additions, I suddenly get the spinning wheel "program not responding" and have to force quit. I reopen the project and if I'm lucky I can add two or three subtitles, saving each time, before I get the"spinning wheel of frustration".

I have no idea what's causing it. But it DVDSP at this stage of my project definitely doesn't like subtitles being edited, moved or played. It becomes unstable and then hangs.
I've downloaded the latest security update incase that helped, turned off the clock, (old habit) Nothing works.
A project that was going to take two hours to finish looks like taking two days now! I'll plod on but I could really do with some help.

How to play .srt subtitle files in movies?

On my iMac when I use VLC it automatically picks up the .srt file in the folder with the same name as the movie. Does AppleTV allow me to play an .srt file too? Thanks.

No it won't do this.
There is clearly a modicum of support for subtitles built in, but I think they have to be encoded in the actual movie file.
Might be worth doing a search for subtitles in this forum.
From memory very few Apple store items include subtitles.
VLC is a non-Apple application, and AppleTV pretty much does things 'Apple's way'. In other words there are strict specs for video files (essentially low quality MPEG4, or better/good quality h264 files). These specs largely relate to the modern h264 codec which is more efficient than MPEG-2 used for DVDs,
I don't think you have an AppleTV based on the question, and if you find VLC does the job thenn a more versatile option might be a Mac Mini if you already have lots of video with associated .srt files.
Afraid I don't use subtitling myself, hopefully someone who does will be able to give some useful advice.
May I suggest you Google an application called Handbrake which is a useful video file converter that can convert video files to AppleTV format. I believe it has some kind of support for embedding subtitles (though not from separate .srt files) but have never tried this personally.
There are also many open source/3rd party apps that act as media centres such as XBMC for the XBOX (originally), plex and so forth - I don't know if they have decent subtitle or .srt support but it might be worth you having a look.

Subtitle edits lost every time iMovie is closed

Hi,
I'm working on a movie with English subtitles. Every time I close iMovie, any editing I've done of the footage itself is saved, but the work I've done on the subtitles is lost!
I'm getting pretty frustrated, especially because I'll work with a native speaker for hours to get the translations/timing just right, and then 2/3 of the subtitles we've changed revert back to how they were before.
The subtitles never disappear completely; they just change back to wrong, earlier versions.
I've tried lots of silly little things, but nothing I do helps.
Any suggestions, please? Thank you so much.

*Not knowing the origin to Your problem - General approach when in trouble is as follows.*
• Free space on internal (start-up) hard disk if it is less than 10Gb should rather have 25Gb
• Delete iMovie pref file
iMovie pref file resides.
Mac Hard Disk (start-up HD)/Users/"Your account"/Library/Preferences
and is named. (one or more of these)

While iMovie is NOT RUNNING - move this/these file/s out on to desk-top.

• Garageband-fix. Start it, Play a note and Close it. Re-try (Corrects an audio problem that hinders iMovie)
• Screen must be set to Million-colors
• Turn off Mac and disconnect Mains/Power for 20-30 minutes - will at least re-set FW-port
• Third party plug-ins that doesn't work OK (not relevant for iMovie’08 or 09 or 11)
• Problems in iPhoto Library can affect iMovie to crash on start-up. Re-build this first then try to re-start iMovie.

From LKN 1935. (in this case = iMovie HD (5), I tried it all, but nothing worked.
Your answer (above) has been helpfull insofar as all the different trials led to the conclusion that
there was something wrong with my iMovie software. I therefore threw everything away and reinstalled
iMovie from the HD. After that the exportation of DV videos (there has not been any problem with HDV videos)
to my Sony camcorders worked properly as it did before.

I updated my Nokia C7 to the latest Software ver. 013.016. And yet i'm unable to use subtitles in the videos. Is the subtitle support is supported for the limited codecs ? Or it's just me doing something wrong ?

My friend tried with his C7 and it worked. Mine does not work.
Maybe something has gone wrong during the update?
Is there any way to check if the video update for subtitles was successful?
Do I need to reinstall the PR1.1?
EDIT: installed search-widget update OTA. Then phone said "all applications are up to date".
Rebooted the phone and subtitles started to work.
Doesn't feel good when you don't know what fixed the problem but at least now it is working.
