Subtitling in DVDSP 1.5

Hey all, Thanks in advace for your replies.
I'm trying to find out the best way to create subtitles for a dvd. Currently I'm using dvdsp1.5, but I'd be willing to uupgrade if it offered an easier more intuitive way of building the subtitle and bringing it in. If someone could give me a step by step on the process, that would be awesome. I've already created a transcript to a Word doc, with times taken off the original dvd, so I only have minutes and seconds, not actual timecode.
Should I use the Subtitle Editor supplied with DVDSP1.5? I tried to do a test with it, and I got a little bit to work, although I made some mistakes, and I can't figure out how to correct them without starting from scratch.
Any advice would be most appreciated.

Frankly I don't remember much about using Subtitle Editor. I do recall working on text files and then importing them into Subtitle Editor, but I also think it was picky about the files it accepted... I believe it was an issue where it only accepted one type of line ending (either Mac, PC, or Unix). Luckily BBEdit or TextWrangler will save any style. So if you have a problem importing into Subtitle Editor, try that.
The problem is that in 1.5, that's about all you could do: just bring in text. All formatting, highlighting, italicizing, baseline shifting, had to be done in Subtitle Editor. With STL files and DVDSP 2 and greater, you can specify ALL that stuff (and more) right in the STL file.

Subtitles with DVDSP...newbie please help...

I will be using my new Intel iMac 20-inch dual booting XP and OS X and will be my primary workhorse for my heavy duty DV editing and DVD authoring.
My question is this:
My source is NTSC DV AVIs with timecode information. I would like to use the timecode information (DV timestamp) as subtitle. For testing purposes, I will be trying out Premiere Pro or Edius Pro or any other NLE software on XP to get my MPEG2 files out of the source AVI files. So, at what point do I use subtitling software to get my subtitles and add it to my video? Does DVDSP support importing subtitle information along with the video and audio tracks? Also, I don't want to burn the subtitles on top of my mpgs. Is there a way for me to add the subtitle as a separate track?
The confusing part is once I convert the AVIs to DVD compliant mpgs, the size of the mpgs will be significantly less compared to the AVIs. So, if thats the case, adding subtitles along with mpg in DVDSP will not sync with the video? I want to get the timestamp displayed as a subtitle the exactly as I see it when I play my video in my camcorder by turning on the datacode information on my Canon GL1.

I have used this for quite a few projects. Not the easiest software to learn, but once you get the hang of it it can be very fast. You just have to prep your text correctly. It can spit out a text file in which DVDSP can generate the subtitles or bitmaps. Both with the proper timecoded scripts. Oh, it's a PC (Windows XP) app, if you still have your PC.

Font issue in subtitles of DVDSP 4?

I have been using DVDSP3, and recently upgraded to DVDSP4, along with all the other members of my multimedia workgroup. Most of our DVD projects include subtitling, in a great variety of languages, sometimes as many as 20-30 on a DVD. Instantly we are noticing that the subtitles (in ver. 4 projects) look slightly distorted. There is a note in the Late Breaking News section of the DVDSP 4 documentation that implies that the appearance of fonts in the Subtitle Editor may not match the appearance of the the fonts on the actual DVD. It is a note for OS 10.3 users, and I don't know if this relates to what we are seeing, but the font degradation we are experiencing is present on both computers that are running 10.3 and on those running OS 10.4. Has anyone else noticed that subtitles in standard fonts, such as Helvetica Bold, don't look clean in DVDSP 4, or not nearly as clean as they did in DVDSP 3? [To be specific, the tracking is a little off, the letters seem fat, the lowercase "a" and "e" characters are slightly the wrong shape -- very odd.] I might think that my computer had a particular issue, but I am seeing this on all the computers in our group...
We normally add our subtitles via STL import files, but I also see this when I create subtitles manually.
I am in search of a workaround, to display our standard subtitles. I have tried most of the available system fonts, hoping to find one that works. To add one more twist, Cyrillic (Russian and Bulgarian) subtitles do look pretty good when done in Lucida Grande, and my Asian languages (Chinese Traditional and Simplified, Korean, etc) do not show any apparent distortions. My biggest problem is finding a bolded font for what should be the easy languages-- English, French, etc.
Anyone else having trouble subtitling in ver. 4?

Yeah, unfortunately that's where we first discovered it -- in the QA of a burned DVD. On more testing, it seems like Arial is the biggest disaster. Helvetica looks more normal at very specific font sizes -- 36, 30, and 26 all look a bit better than those sizes in between. And Lucida Grande is not much affected at all. Many of the less common fonts are less suitable to subtitles (can't be made bold, or look too stylized, etc), so admittedly I have only been checking about 10 of the major fonts.
For now, I am going to try to just switch all our Western European languages to Lucida Grande.
Any ideas? Could the install have corrupted our fonts? Are you seeing anything similar?

Importing FCP subtitle into DVDSP using TitleExchange

Has anyone tried this converter? It converts XML file (exported from FCP) into STL, which let you import the subtitle of the FCP track that you choose into DVDSP.
However, when I import the subtitle file from DVDSP, only 51 out of 450 segments were imported into DVDSP subtitle timeline, and not placed in correct timing with the video.
Does anyone have any solution?

find where it's at in DVDSP to set it that way.

Not sure about scripting but if you click on the lock
at the S1 line and close it, that seems to lock the subtitles in the on
position so this must be the default.
Will the viewer be able to turn it off with their remote
if they want to is the question now.

Need to know how can I export video with subtitle (specific clip) from DVDSP to quicktime for website? I use FCP to edit the video but not have subtitle on FCP. I want to see video with subtitle as open caption on web. How?

In DVDSP, turn on the Force Subtitles button to embed them into the video.
Burn a Disk Image instead of a DVD and rip to your format of choice in MPEG Streamclip.
You can go back and uncheck the Force button if you want the final DVD to have the option of playing without subtitles should the viewer choose to do so.

Subtitle created from DVDSP cannot display in VLC

i build a disc from DVDSP with subtitles, it display fine in DVD Player-(Mac Apps), when i press the subtitle button it pops out.
but here's the problem, when i using the VLC player, even i click the subtitle track, it just will not appear...forever.
any steps i should aware about creating the subtitle in DVDSP?

Subtitles: FCP or DVDSP? Best workflow and quality?

I have always placed subtitles in FCP. I am now looking at DVDSP instead. This will help I know if I ever need a second language option. But how is the workflow and is the quality good?
For me it seems easier in FCP, because I can make editing decisions while seeing the subtitle. Having to make a locked and final edit and still not have subtitles in place appears more difficult and prone to problems. Anyone find these problems easy to deal with using DVDSP for subtitles?

There is no option to burn in "subtitles" in DVDSP. DVD subtitles are streams of text and formatting data, not text image files, although sub streams can display graphics. FCP does not have a utility to export text objects as subtitle data streams in STL, SMI, SML, SON, or SCR formats. You cannot import a QT movie into the subtitle tracks.
So, where you create the subtitles is determined by two things: a) your need for flexibility (for changes or to receive data from another source) and b) your need for quality. Subs created and drawn onto the screen by the DVD player will be fairly high quality. Text that is burned into the video will never be any better than the encoder settings you used for the MPEG2.

Offset subtitles from a stl file

Hello,
I tried to search the forum but found one related thread regarding offsetting subtitles from an imported stl file. That thread (somebody complaining that they couldn't select and move two or more subtitles in dvdsp 2, still not possible in 4 btw) suggested using stl edit. I had purchased STL edit 1.4 but Micheal Lofquist of Guishen stopped development after releasing v2 due to deminishing interest.
Alas Stl edit 1.4 doesn't seem to work very well with tiger, and v2 is not for sale anymore. Google so far hasn't brought me any alternatives mac-wise
To cut an already too long story short, is there another way to offset subtitles in dvd. Except doing them one by one. The way you deal with subtitles after the've been created or imported in dvdsp seems to be very archaic. The UI resembles FCP but lacks just about every functionality FCP has.
My last struggle with subtitles in dvdsp dates two years back and cost me a night of sleep. Spend that night in copy/paste ****. Now I'm spending half a day just trying to figure how to do this...

thanks for your informative reply. Stl edit 1.4 doesn't let me save files anymore alas. And I asked Micheal Lofquist from Guishen if it still possible to purchase stl edit 2. But he hasn't replied so far. As the product is discontinued I can't blame him. I'm surprised that there wasn't enough interest in his product since it seems such a necessity when working with stl's and subtitles. Oh well.
Thanks for the offer. Really appreciate it. Might take you up on it but I'll try to work it out with the subtitling agency first. Maybe Michael Lofquist will respond soon and let's me buy stl edit. Or maybe he will tell me it was bought by apple to be implemented in dvdsp 5

how do i export subtitles from dvd studio pro to final cut?

Hi - welcome to the discussions.
I'm afraid there is no easy way to do what you want. If you have created the subtitles inside DVDSP then they are held inside the track description item - you can export a track description by using the export item function...
However, that file will be written in XML and you'll need to interpret it to get the subtitles out of it. There are a couple of shareware apps that can do it, but it isn't guaranteed to work every time.
You are better off by far to write the subtitles in an external app or use a text editor and then import them to DVDSP... that way you can always get the text into any other app as you need.

I want to get one clip from 1 hour video. I need it with subtitles as quicktime. How can I get video with subtitle from DVDSP save as quicktime? and how can I get .stl file into FCP?

I suggest that you create 15-second silent audio slug that you can use to move the audio the same amount you have moved the video.

Playing movie with subtitles and without

Total newbie at making a film with subtitles and at using DVD Studio Pro
The person creating the subtitles did it in FCP and I just opened her project and then laid it on my video. Question is - how can I burn the DVD with the options of English only or with subtitles.
Do I need to have two movies imported into DVD Studio, one with subtitles another not (it's only a 30 minute video, so that's not a problem to fit on a DVD).
Or is there another way to handle it in DVD Studio?

Typically you would NOT have subs on your footage, but would add them to DVDSP as a separate file. You can create subtitles inside DVDSP but if you do there is no flexibility in manipulating them later.
Workflow is to create the footage in FCP, then to use that in a subtitler app to spot the speech and create the subs, then import the footage and the subs file into DVDSP.

Export mpeg2 with subtitles

I have a dvd-project with one film-track, one audio-track and one subtitle-track.
I want to export this (video, audio & subtitle) into a mpeg2-file. How to do this?
I have tried to export as a dvd (build) and then tried to convert and mux the files in both Cinematize and Mpegstream clip. Nothing works.
Can I export from dvdsp the subtitles into final cut? Or can I import a .stl-file into fcp? Is it possible to import in any way created subtitles in dvdsp into fcp?
Is it possible to export anything else then DVD (vob) from dvdsp?

I found a solution...
I made a DVD in dvdsp. Open the DVD in Cinematize. Exported a subtitle movie, without picture and audio. I imported the subtitle-quicktime into after effects and made a sequens suitable my projects settings and exportewd an quicktime with alpa-channel. Imported the new quicktime in fcp and sync together with my movie then exported a muxed mpeg 2 thru compressor. This REALLY *****!
Wonder why you cant export subtitles-tracks from dvdsp to fcp? It would be great if you were able to work between dvdsp and fcp like you do with fcp and motion.

How do I import Korean or Japanese subtitles?

I've figured out how to to import .txt or .stl subtitle files for English, French or German. But every time I try to import the Korean subtitles into DVDSP it just reads as gobblygunk. I suspect I need to change some encoding somewhere in preferences, but I'm not sure what. I had the same problem in TextEdit, just to read the file I had to change the encoding to Korean (mac os). Do I have to do the same for DVDSP? How?

O.K. Here's an update. I had to go into TextEdit, re-open the doc and change the encoding to Korean. The trouble was importing it into DVDSP after that. But if I copy and pasted each subtitle manually into DVDSP it read the Korean letters properly. Then my Japanese translator emailed me his file, said he had the same problem that I had with the Korean subs, so he gave it to me as a .rtf file. And the .rtf file imported into DVDSP no prob.

Ripped subtitles getting "shuffled"

I wrote subtitles for a movie in DVDSP3 and am trying to make mp4 files of this movie to put on a webpage with the subtitles from dvdsp. I have tried several applications that are supposed to rip video with the subtitles burned into the picture from the dvd. But all these applications, for example "DVD Ripper" and "HandBrake", render the subtitles so that they appear randomly and not when they are supposed to. It seems logic to me that there is something wrong with dvdsp's subtitles because all these applications cant be wrong, can they?

Sorry to disappoint you, but there is nothing wrong with DVD SP subtitles. They are rendered exactly per DVD-Video Spec. On the other hand the 'ripping' applications are hacker's tools, and they may not implement all functions properly.
