Subtle screen flicker at lowest brightness

Try the following:
1. Unplug adaptor
2. Rip a DVD using Handbrake
3. During ripping the process, lower the screen brightness to 1 (lowest level before turning black)
4. Notice there is a very slight and subtle flicker in the the screen
It only happened to me in the above set up, anyone else can confirm this?
Thanks

i got the same problems with a flickering tft on my mbp.
i figured out, that you can avoid the flickerproblem by set on the isight camera with photobooth and mirror widegt
the same effect will occur, when you install the programm "quietmbp", that originally should minmize the whining sound in the mbp. so, by installing "quietmbp" the flickering will be automatically stopped.
an apple reseller (gravis in germany) should replace the inverter due to this whining problem. the technician told me, that my mbp would be one of the most quiet mbp, he has seen for the last three months.
my question: what do you guess will happen if the inverter will be replaced in my mbp? will the whining sound stop and also the flickering symtopms as well?
thank you very much.

  • Screen flicker at low brightness

    Hi all
I have a macbook pro unibody 15" and I seem to be getting a screen flicker at low brightness settings.
I used to have a macbook and it never did this.
Is this normal and if not, is there anything that I can do about it?

    Hi G,
I was going to suggest having it checked for the NVIDIA issue, but you state you have a unibody. If you have a new unibody, you would be best served if you posted in that forum (this area is for the Original MBP). Good luck.

  • 15-inch MacBook Pro Screen Snaps to Lowest Brightness Setting Upon Lifting Lid

I don't quite remember when this started (probably 4-8 months ago), but lately when I open the lid of my 15-inch, Late 2008 MacBook Pro, the screen (which seems to already be on when I open the lid) instantly snaps to the lowest brightness setting (or might shut off, I'm not sure).  In other words, instead of being off when I open the lid, then turning on, it seems to do the opposite.
It is easily remidied by tapping the up or down brightness buttons, and I assumed after one or two software updates the issue would go away, but it hasn't.  It's a mild inconvienience at worst, but it would be nice not to have to perform the extra step.
Is anyone else having this issue?  Any suggestions?

It is better to contact Apple.

  • MacBookPro5,1 LED screen flicker on either graphics card on lowest brightne

MacBookPro5,1 LED screen flicker on either graphics card on lowest brightness setting. Definitely noticeable and annoying when using the lowest power settings to extend battery life during school usage. Has been happening since I got the machine.
Also new out of the box the screen isn't aligned properly with the base of the unit. Like it got knocked around during manufacture, anyone have this issue?
Also my serial number does not show up in Apple's systems as a sold machine even though I have a proof of purchase. I called 800 APL CARE to resolve the issue, they were looking into it and haven't gotten back to me either, this was weeks ago....
Anyone think I should buy APP?

Your underpowered system may get by if you edit SD DV material, but is way out of its league when editing AVCHD or Red or DSLR material.
Without further info to go on, you have the following problems:
    Not enough memory
    No dedicated nVidia video card
    Insufficient PSU
    No hard disks
About the only thing good about your system is the CPU, but there it ends. Everything else needs to be improved. How much depends on your source material, your workflow, your destination format and all those data were severely missing.

  • Macbook Pro screen is lowest brightness after lock screen

    Hi,
Recently my MBP randomly has the lowest brightness after i come back to login after a lock screen... any solutions to this?

    Goto
    System Preferences> Keyboard>
and make sure "Use all F1, F2, etc. keys as standard function keys" is unchecked
Alternatively you can try pressing the function key on your keyboard in combination with the brightness keys. (fn) lower left.

  • Screen goes back to lowest brightness level after wakeup

    Hello All,
My late 2002 Titanium Powerbook screen sometimes goes to the lowest brightness level after wakeup when the lid has been closed. I manually have to reset the level again. Does anyone know why the level is not staying to my original setting? Do you think there's a corruption in the wakeup mode function? Just a hunch, though. Any input is much appreciated. Have a great day.

    Hi TJK,
I just did a permission repair with disk utility to eliminate any other issues. I'll create a new user and give your suggestion a try. It makes sense since I recently got this machine used from another owner. I've nothing to lose, I suppose.
While I'm here, would a clean install eliminate the issue I'm having? I'm not too excited about having his name on my Home folder permanently, anyway. I've no problem doing a clean install, and I've got the original install disks.
    Best regards,

  • How can I reproduce my screen flicker so they'll believe me?

The intermittent nature of the annoying screen flicker on my Macbook makes it difficult to show a tech that it is a real problem and not some figment of my imagination. Does anybody know of a "sure fire" way of reproducing it? I have been able to recreate the rapid dimming and brightening of my Macbook screen by moving the brightness indicator all the way to the left and then bumping it up one click. This only works sometimes and it only works when I do it by clicking and dragging on the ball on the display screen in system prefs. It doesn't work by using f1 and f2. I made a video of my screen while it was flickering and put the video on the desktop. I'm sending it in as soon as my box arrives on Tuesday. They're also replacing my stained top case. I hope they will look at the video and at least test the inverter and cable to see if they're the problem. Any help with how to encourage them would be greatly appreciated.
    macbook   Mac OS X (10.4.9)

I am the victim of this problem also. The screen flickering & brightness of the screen suddenly fade to low intensity. The screen flickering happened everytime I use my MacBook.
May MacBook was the initial Jun 2006 version.
I already get those problems (a) sudden shutdown (replace the logic board), (b) palm rest area discoloration (change the bottom case), (c) power adaptor pin contact problem (replace the new one), (d) poor performance of battery life (awaiting confirmation from local Apple support, 180cycle max. charge only 50% of initial capacity) & (e) screen flicker issue (today just send in my MacBook for them to do diagnostic).
I really lost confident with my MacBook.
Should I request a replacement of entire MacBook?
My warranty period will be expired mid of next month & the are asking me to purchase the apple protection plan. But, I claim that the unit is poor in initial build quality & why I should considered the plan. It is unfair to me.
If the MacBook is in good condition then I will consider the plan for support another 2 years (fair), not in this reverse way.
Anybody please guide me how to pursue this matter.
I previously own an iBook G4 & PowerBook G4 TI don't have these problem at all.

  • Screen flicker ios 5

ever since i upgraded to 5, i have occasional, but annoying, screen flicker.  sometimes it actually goes black for a split second.  i have not noticed any change inbattery drain.  anyone else having this problem?  this is on 1st gen iPad.

Go into settings then into brightness setting and try turning it off, then reset your iPad and see if it stops doing it. Also there is a light sensor on the top of the iPad that adjust the light,do do have you hand over that ?

  • Screen flicker imac

My new iMac 27"  seems to have a slight screen flicker at low light settings. If I adjust the brightness higher it goes away, but comes back when dimmed to the previous low level. There is no banding or stripes on the screen, it seems like the backlight is flickering.

Apple has stated that their Mountain Lion version of OS X and its Bootcamp are NOT compatible with "Windows 8" versions yet. That is the source of your problem.

  • Screen problems - Horizontal gradient brightness - Satellite R25 Tablet

    Hello all
I have some strange problem with my screen. When I use two lowest brightness levels my screen is not constantly bright it has horizontal gradient. Looking from left side I have very dark screen, near middle there is normal brightness, after middle dark again and in the end/right side o screen it's bright.
This anomaly is most notified only on two lowest levels of brightness, when I want to extend my battery life time.
I was replacing my Windows XP but without any positive result.
Does the screen need to be replaced, or is there another way to fix it?

I am afraid it is hardware issue. I cannot say for sure that display is defective but if you bring it to the service technician can test it with special diagnostic tools.
As you can see fresh OS installation didnt help and it cannot be software problem. Sorry but I don't believe there is anything you can do alone to fix it. If possible continue to use display with acceptable brightness level.

  • LED Screen Flicker

I bought the new LED display MacBook Pro yesterday and the screen flickers when it isn't on max brightness.
    Anyone else have this issue?

What you are seeing as a screen "flicker" may actually be a result of ambient light changes.
they can seem to be flickers if the brightness of the graphics changes or if the ambient light has a change.
Those users who have not used a laptop with the ambient light adjustment are not familiar with the screen changes and might not see them as a natural enhancement. (tis hard to adjust after using one to using one that does not have it- you get used to it and miss it if using a lesser computer.)
If it does not happen when at max brightness, ambient light is more likely than a display problem.
To check: go to displays preferences and turn off (uncheck) "automatically adjust brightness as ambient light changes."

  • Laptop display no longer turning off at lowest brightness

As of updating my system a week or two ago, I can no longer completely turn of my laptop monitor with the backlight keys. Before, the lowest brightness setting would be a completely black monitor, but now the lowest brightness is just a dim screen. I'm not sure if this has to do with some kernel update or my desktop environment, GNOME 3. One thing that might be important, is that `xbacklight -set 0` used to turn the display off, but now it also just puts it at the lowest brightness.
Does anyone know why this is happening?

    Hi gsingh93,
first of all, xbacklight cannot completely turn off your monitor: all it can do is to set the brightness level to its minimum value (and this can result in a very very dark screen) but it will leave the lcd turned on. If you want to switch off your monitor you should follow the ArchWiki instructions).
Now, can you provide the output of the following commands?
xbacklight -set 0 && xbacklight -get
Also, what is the graphics card of your laptop? It is a dual GPU system or it has only an integrated one?
Does it work if you manually set the backlight level to zero using a command like the following?
tee /sys/class/backlight/$your_backlight/brightness <<< 0 #this must be run as root
    cat /sys/class/backlight/$your_backlight/brightness
where the value of $your_backlight depends on your graphics card model (again take a look to the ArchWiki)
    @markzz
markzz wrote:...but it seems that X no longer allows this to happen...
It is not true, xbacklight can set the brightness level to zero on my Samsung NP530U3C-A03IT with an integrated intel graphics card and my system is fully upgraded.

  • PS 7.0 screen flicker?

Hi all. I have a problem with my Photoshop 7.0. I've got a screen flicker, which after research I found it it has something to do with intellipoint?
I've got a Logitech LS1 wired mouse, I'm wasn't running any logitech drivers up until now, but the problem happens with and without logitech drivers (setpoint 6.2)
The flickering happens when changing contrast/brightness, when using lasso tool, and a few other things. When using the lasso for example, I'll be half way round doing something then flicker and the lasso will connect to the starting point, leaving me to do it again
When changing contrast/brightness for example, it'll flicker and I'll have to minimize then maximise PS to get the box with the slider up again.
Is there a solution? I looked for intellipoint but I don't think I've got it
    All help appreciated

    For example, in Windows 7:
In Windows Explorer, navigate to Photoshop's installation area (e.g., "C:\Program Files (x86)\Adobe\Photoshop 7.0").
Right-click on Photoshp.exe and choose Properties.
In the dialog you will find a Compatibility tab.  Click it.
Check the checkbox for [ ] Run this program in compatibility mode for:.
Try the options, e.g., Windows XP (Service Pack 3).
There are also some other options in the dialog you can experiment with.  I suggest doing so conservatively and methodically, then starting Photoshop 7 each time to see if the problem is corrected.
This will subtly change the way Windows runs the program, and may help address the problem you're seeing.

  • I-Mac 24" Screen Flicker

I have a 24" 2007 imac that is out of apple care.
When the screen is not on full brightness and the CPU has been fully loaded (i.e. processing RAW files) I get screen flicker and the only way to clear this is to turn the screen up to full brightness. I have tried using Shades but this does not help.
Has anyone got any ideas, is my screen on the way out?

Ausha, I can't answer all of your question but I do have some suggestions/recommendations for a few.
    4. How good are the blacks ?
The blacks are very black, very rich due to the glossy screen. The look better on mu iMac display than the Samsung display I have.
    5. How can one adjust the height of the screen
Screen Heigh is fixed. You can always use a ream of paper or two, that is what I do.
    6. What color calibration software would be the ideal
I use Spyder2 Pro and it does a fair job on the calibration. The problem is that with the glass over the CD the "spyder" doesn't get the best reading off of the display. I would imagine that Pantones "Huey" calibration would have this same issue. Either one of these programs are rated very high though.
    7. How is the effect of glossy screen on the eye. Is it a huge strain?
If you have a very bright room the glare can be bothersome. If the room is overhead fluorescents or indirect lighting it should be ok. I've only run into a couple of instances where it really bothered me. Most of the time I don't even notice it.
    8. Capture one pro vs Apples own aperture for raw editing is it worth spending extra £219 ???
I use Adobe Lightroom and love it. The cost is about the same as Aperature. I did quite a bit of research and comparrisons between Aperature and Lightroom before buying one and like the features and useability of Lightroom better. Plus it integrates seamlessly with Photoshop CS3.

    Hope this helps you

  • T30 screen flicker

My T30 screen starts to flicker after 5-10 minutes of operation. The screen does not fade to black, it just dims a little, but does it very fast. This flickers come in syncronous with CPU of disk activity, so it seems to me that is may be some kind of power problem. It does not matter if it runs on battery of on charger, with or without battery installed.
Can this be solved without changing some major part of the machine? If not, then can you tell me which part of the system is malfunctioning?
    Thanks

I have a new MacBook Pro 15 inch that I bought the first day they were available. I too have noticed screen flicker. It only occurs on the left side of the screen and is only noticeable at somewhat reduced brightness. I'm trying to decide whether to take it back to Apple for repair or replacement, or whether it should be considered within the working parameters of the screen, as it's not apparent at "normal" brightness, i.e., the brightness most people probably use most of the time. Has anyone consulted Apple about this and got a response?
