Success with iDefrag and DiskWarrior on my Intel iMac! (indirectly)

Had some very good success using iDefrag and DiskWarrior on my intel iMac, both of which do not run directly on the intel platform yet. As I had observed a gradual (modest) slow-down over the course of the past month since I got my iMac, I couldn't help but try to figure out a way to defrag and optimize the hard drive since I had over 125GB (including quite a few large media files, and a couple system updates, both of which tend to cause fragmentation). So, after doing two independent backups on separate external HD's, I ran iDefrag on my iBook and defrag/optimized the iMac's hard drive using Target Disk Mode. As expected, the hd was VERY fragmented - and the process took overnight to complete. Being as careful as possible to ensure no problems, I then ran verify disk and repair permissions on the iMac's hard drive, and no problem. Did notice a very meaningful increase in responsiveness and speed on the iMac, even more than I would have expected. Since I historically always ran DiskWarrior after doing this exercise on my PPC mac's, I decided to attempt the same here. Since I (and others on this board) have been unsuccessful in running DW3.03 using the iMac in Target Disk Mode, I decided to update backup drive #1 post-iDefrag, and was then able to mount this drive (backup#1) and run DiskWarrior on it from the iBook. No problems were detected which was great news, but the I had it write the new index/directory files. I then sync'd back to my iMac's hard drive (from backup#1 to iMac HD) and observed that a number of files were updated most likely as a result of the updated directory/index files from running DW (I use FolderSynchronizer to sync). So keeping backup#2 of the pre-iDefrag/DiskWarrior for a while, but so far so good, and a very meaningful improvement in performance. So the experiment seems to be a success.
DISLAIMERS: If anyone does "try this at home" please backup and re-backup before attempting. In addition, please note that Coriolis is in the process of developing an intel build for iDefrag and probably recommended in general to wait for this update.

Thanks for this posting and the good advice.  I put in some time chasing the 801.57 gb limit before finding this thread that steers in the direction I see now I must persue, a new enclosure (modern day version rather than 5 year old technology -- yes, the old external drive has the Oxford chipset mentioned repeatedly in other threads) to go with my new drive.  Would have been better off $$-wise to have purchased a complete unit, but this is so much more fun on a Monday evening.
Great being here with you all!

  • Using Time Machine to backup a iMac G5 and restore to an intel iMac

Is it possible to use Time Machine to backup my iMac G5 and restore my backup to a new intel iMac?
The reason being is that I my mother-in-law's company bought her a new intel Mac and she wants to trade with me since she only uses her Mac for e-mail, photos and accounting software.
I was thinking of making sure her data is preserved by using the migration assistant to transfer her data to my iMac G5 and then using my time machine backup to restore to her intel iMac. I have concerns about this method after reading about the intel/powerpc issues with time machine. I also have concerns that perhaps the version of MacOS 10.5 installed to my iMac G5 will not be optimized for intel.

Well, not entirely. You cannot install or restore a PPC version of OS X to an Intel Mac because the PPC system will not work on an Intel Mac. You can copy your personal files, most preference files, and third-party applications (although it would be preferable to update all PPC-only apps to universal binaries which perform better on Intel machines.
Another possible concern is if your mother's company is transferring the ownership to her or simply purchasing the unit for her to use. In the latter case the computer belongs to the company, not your mother. She cannot then give it to you because it isn't hers. This problem should be resolved beforehand because the company may one day want the computer back.

  • Apple Pro speakers with mini jack connect to new Intel iMac ?

I would like to be able to connect the pair of perspex globe Apple Pro Speakers with mini-jack that came with my PowerPC G4 Mac to my new Lion desktop Intel iMac.
However, the mini-jack is too small for either the ' audio in / optical digital audio in port ' or the ' headphone out / optical digital audio out port ' (I'm not sure which is the correct one to use !)
Is it possible with an adaptor, or by some other means, to connect them ?
If it is unfortunately not possible, any cheap alternative speakers recommended would be appreciated.

There are no adapters that are readily available to use the old Apple Pro speakers with other computers or newer Macs.
The only adapter that worked but has long been discontinued in the Griffin Technologies iFire.
These are even harder to find now and if you do, indeed find one, you're going to pay an outrageous amount of money just for an adapter that used to sell for $40!!
For the cost of this adapter, you could just buy new speakers.
The big problem with the old Apple Pro speakers is that Apple went out of its way to make sure you couldn't use these speakers with anything else but certain G4 Mac models. The connector and subsequent wiring make these speakers very proprietary and limited use without spending gobs of time altering some of the components and purchasing external computer audio amps and connectors.
Apple simply made these unusable on anything but their own hardware at that time.
It's simply not worth the effort.
Look in the Apple Store online. There are a lot of decent priced, good-looking speakers to use with your iMac.
    Good hunting!

  • I have been dealing with crashing and freezing issues on my iMac for 6 months.  A supervisor has been assisting me but the issue is not getting fixed.  The computer was under when the issues started.  He wants to get us a new computer but is not allowed.

Our iMac was under warranty when it began freezing and or crashing.  I have spent several hours on the phone with a supervisor and had the machine in 2x.  We have also had a repair done in our home.  The problems persist.  We feel apple owes us a new computer.   Help!!!

Do you have a written record of your attempts to get it repaired?  When you took the machine "in" for repairs, did you take it to an Apple Store or to an Apple Authorized Reseller or Repair Facility, and do you have copies of invoices or statements showing what repairs were made?  If the answers are yes, you need to be persistent in attempting to get a new computer.  Ask to talk to the supervisor's supervisor to "escalate" the complaint to a higher level.  Get copies of all your repair information and send a letter to the Apple Customer Service people in California and ask them for help.
If your iMac was under warranty when the problems started and the problems have not been resolved, your position should be that the problems should still be fixed or the computer replaced even though the warranty may have expired in the interim.  Do you live in the US?  If yes, your home state has a Consumer Protection agency.  File a complaint with them and ask for their assistance in mediating and/or resolving the matter.

  • EE Successes with TU and EX :D

Hey all,  Just wanted to report some success. Got TU to remove a collection that was scheduled for fall off 1/16 (in July, 6 mo early). Had EX just remove the same, scheduled for 11/15 in their system today (3 mo early). I'm going to make the same call to EQ soon, but I know they can be more difficult.  Keep plugging away at it if you get a denial first time, Experian's dispute department seems particularly knowledgable and seems to go by a 3 month rule. 1 more paid collection to get removed from my EX and I will actually have a clean credit report (currently in dispute, fingers crossed).  Will still have 2 stubborn paid medicals, but I'm hoping fico 9 and the new rules take care of those over the next couple years for my TU and EQ.

Ex 697, TU 680, Eq now 631 after the 6 pt drop, the other scores are post 25 pt increase.
I also have SDFCU secored, 3 months old 500 limit, zero balance.
Safe FCU one month old, 5000, $70 balance. When this card reported, I received a 25 pt boost from TU and EX, and a 6 pt drop with Eq.
Mid Carolina FCU 2500, 300 balance, will have that under 10% by next billing.
I have one 30 day late, over a year old.
I also have 5 medical collections.
I am working on a pfd for those. 2 are auto accident related, so the CA said they would delete when paid, and I am paying them off tomorrow.
I paid one last week, and received an alert saying it was due to a collection being updated, showing paid.
Only one collection is showing on TU and EX.
    Those are all the baddies.
I just don't get the drop from Eq when a revolving account was added.

  • Followed all suggestions to repair downloads - none worked, though temporary success with uninstalling and re-installing firefox.

Using yahoo email on hp laptop. Firefox has worked fine for ages, but suddenly no downloads possible. I followed all the suggestions on the page in Support, including the reset of Firefox. None worked. I tried uninstalling, turning the computer off, then re-installing, and that worked at first, but now is unrelaiable. I try using small size word docs without graphics. A few days before this happened, I tried to look at a web page which asked me to download latest shockwave player. I repeatedly tried, but although a window showed to say it was done, the program was not findable on my computer. I then repeatedly tried to download a flash player update and that wouldn't work either. Was able to download flash player using Internet Explorer. Don't know if that's connected.

It is possible that anti-virus software is corrupting downloaded files or is interfering otherwise.
Try to disable the real-time (live) scanning of files in your anti-virus software temporarily to see if that makes downloading work.

It's a XYZ stage. I have a COM dll to use it. I did an instrument from this dll and everything was working fine untill I uninstalled LabWindows. IVI shared components seems to be having problems as I coundn't uninstall it when I tried to do a clean reinstallation. Maybe the issue comes from there..
I am using the error variables and the error pop up does pop up but no other "system" error as IVIdll is missing or something like this..

  • Memory Stick works with G4 and G3 but not G5 iMac

I have a memory stick that connects correctly with a G3 iBook and G4 iMac but not a G5 iMac. When plugged into a G5 USB port, the memory stick appears on the desktop but not the Finder. Doubleclicking on the desktop icon generates a Finder window in which the memory stick appears in the second column from the left along with the other icons in the top half of the leftmost column. Clicking on the icon for the memory stick in that Finder window fails to open it. The File menu has a item for ejecting the memory stick, but ejection does not result. I have also tried without success to drag the icon to the trash. So I just physically remove it, which produces a message saying the device was not properly removed.
Any ideas for enabling this memory stick (which has admittedly been through the wars) to work with the G5 iMac? Thanks

    Thanks for the suggestions, Charles.
The G5 keyboard is Bluetooth so I've been plugging the memory stick into the back of the machine.
I've repaired permissions on the G5. I tried to repair the memory stick in Disk Utility but elicited only the spinning beachball. As I was typing this I realized I hadn't tried repairing the disk (i.e., the memory stick) on another computer. I did, and after a few seconds the screen said no repairs necessary.
The memory stick did eject the first time I plugged into the G5 after that. But the other problems remained. And then when I plugged it back in, it no longer ejected electronically. So I'm back where I was.

  • I cant find the recovery HD after erasing and reformatting my 2009 intel imac

    Hi All .
Ive spent hours readng through many discussions on the subject but no avail in my problem.
I have an old intel based 2009 iMac , I erased the hard drive through disk utility so I could restore to  factory settings.
Then i couldnt find the hard drive or the recovey HD,
I used the old iMac in target Mode on a newer 2011 27" iMac running 10.8.4 and can see the hard drive, so i verified and repaired disk from there.
Then when i turned on the older imac it asked  for firmware password.
no chance i could remember as its been a long time since i used.
found a 15" ,Macbook Pro 10.6.3 installation disk and managed to get it to see it after holding the option key at startup .
I noticed though the Macintosh HD and the recovery HD werent there and just the osx 10.6.3 nstallation disc.
so i choose the disc and it gets me to the stage of installing when it goves the error "      Mac os X  cant be installed on this computer.
gives me the option to restore from time machine backups but all are incompatible as are from different models.
i can get to disk utility but cant do anything from there.
How can i get the recovery hd to be shown again after startup and option key ????
    PLEASE HELP

Hi, Where were you booted from to use Disk Utility? Sounds like it wasn't the Restore partition, & you erased the whole Drive instead of just the OSX partition!???
You'll have to use the App Store, look for prchases, re-download 10.8 & install it in Target mode.
found a 15" ,Macbook Pro 10.6.3 installation disk
    Gray Discs are machine specific.

    HI,
Go here for help to Resolving Kernel Panics
To eject the disc, try starting up while holding down the mouse. If that doesn't help, startup while holding down the Eject key ⏏
Try starting up while holding down the Option key which should prompt the Startup Manager window. Select MacintosHD 10.x.x

  • Working with MobileMe and MS Office Entourage on iMac

I'm sure there are many users out there who, like me, are working with Entourage to manage their mail, so I'm hoping someone may be able to explain what I've seen occurring. I should start by saying that my understanding of email accounts and how they work is not good.
Since the switch to MobileMe, besides the many documented problems in the beginning, I've noticed a periodic situation where none of the current email in my Entourage inbox show up in my MobileMe screen. I frequently check my email on my computer at my home office before leaving for the office, and then use MobileMe on my work office PC to check my home office email. Sometimes I can view email (opened and unopened) several days in the past on MobileMe; and then sometimes - like now - I see no email on MobileMe except newly unopened email. Anyone understand what's happening here?
Also, does anyone understand why sent email responses that I send in MobileMe do not register anywhere in my Entourage email program at my home office? Is there a way I can fix this so that I have a hard drive record of these responses?
    Thanks, anyone, for your help!
    Chris

Turns out I had to abandon Outlook as my mail platform. It would be helpful if Apple would warn users more explicitly that certain commercially available and popular software is not only "unsupported", but ultimately incompatible with Apple software/hardware. Users assume if an Apple version exists, that it is sufficient to overcome compatibility problems. Certainly we don't get this info from the software manufacturers....

  • Problems with Yahoo and security on my new iMac

I just got my new iMac last weekend and I have had a Yahoo email account for years.
Now all of sudden last night, I got an email from Yahoo saying I was signed up for some Phone Out Service and there was an account set up in my user name. (so they must have gotten my user name and password somehow)
It looks like a Japanese name and some other credit card number on my account. How does this happen? Should I be worried? Has anyone else had this happen to them?
The billing dept. got back to me and took all that Phone Out stuff off my account, but they didn't say how it got there in the first place! I'm really concerned about this. I think I'll close out my whole Yahoo account. (I have changed my password, etc.)
Has anything like this happened to anyone else? I'm just really concerned about how this happened, someone must have gotten into my account somehow (with my user name and password), makes me worry they could get into something else more important. Is there anything I can do to prevent this?
I was told I didn't need antivirus or internet protection, etc. I just turned on my firewall the other day and did log into my email a couple times before I turned it on. But maybe my info was stolen somewhere else (I have logged in my email on public computers).
Any advice anyone? Is my iMac safe? Should I get some kind of internet protection? I'm still waiting to hear more from Yahoo as to how this happened.
    Thanks so much.

I'm just nervous that they somehow got into my new iMac and still can. Is there more I should do to protect it?
    Thanks again!
Are you on high speed internet behind a hardware firewall such as a router? Or are you on a dial up modem?
If you are high speed and don't have a router I'd highly recommend you purchase one. They are not very expensive. If you do have a router its unlikely they got into your computer and more likely someone got the information from a public source. A router protects you by only allowing in solicited data from the site you are visiting and blocks uncalled for probes. If you are on dial-up its a good idea to turn on the software firewall.
It's very easy for someone to go to a public computer, install a small piece of monitoring software from a usb memory stick, remove the stick and then leave the program running for a period of time collecting user names and passwords. After a week or so the thief returns to the computer, re-inserts his usb stick, downloads the collected information to the stick and leaves with the data.
Other ways they can get information is from public wifi spots such as cafes or hotel rooms. All someone has to do is join the network, and from their own computer monitor the internet traffic on the unsecured connection and collect data.
Unless you store your passwords on the computer there's nothing there for anyone to get into. If they tried to install a piece of software you would have had to have given permission to install it just like any other piece of software. But if you do think your computer has been compromised the only sure way to know it's safe again would be to re-format the hard drive and re-install your OS and data.

Hmmm, strange... I restarted QTP after upgrading it to 'Pro' which activated all of the editing commnands, but not the selection tabs. On the second restart, the tabs appeared. Bottom line, problem solved,
