Success with Time Machine clients

Is anyone using MCX settings to successfully backup a number of 10.6 clients to a 10.6 server via Time Machine?
Are there any guidelines for numbers of clients, amounts of data, etc.

During a visit with my sister-in-law, we bought a new iMac for her and I enabled Time Machine. It came with a bus powered iomega usb drive as a freebie that I set up as the backup disk. When I came back to visit a few months later I discovered that her backup had corrupted just like mine had except no Airport Express was involved.
Searching through Apple's KB I was left wondering why I had identical failures with both supported (hers) and unsupported configurations (mine).
I changed the backups on her iMac to daily and put her machine on a UPS like I did with mine and it's been working every since.
That got me wondering if the frequency of the backups increases likelihood of failure. However, I've updated the firmware on my Airport Express several times in the last 18 months so I really can't say with certainty that a particular action is a cure.
Why not use CarbonCopyCloner or SuperDuper? They're more suited to daily backups.
I do like the Time Machine interface but largely because I didn't know Time Machine wasn't supposed to work the last time I started from scratch.
CCC is awesome. I've used it many times. Can I rely on it to backup to an Airport Express mounted USB drive or do I have to connect it directly? The latter is less appealing for wi-fi connected laptops.

Has anyone had had success with Time Machine and Airport Express 6th gen?

For the last six months I have attempted to use the Time Machine product to provide first level backup for my two MacBook Airs and iMac. Tryed a number of powered USB drives, tryed all of the current 10.8, 10.9 OSX software. The Time Machine product seems to work for about a month to six weeks and then fails with message about the file integrity or access problems. In all cases I can acess files on the drive and the only application that struugles with the AE usb drive is Time Machine.
You would think that if it works for a month it should work for a year?
I have purchased Carbon Copy Cloner and it seems to function without a problem and I think that I am probably better off with a once a day clone than a Time Machine with data integrity problems.

You are connecting a USB hard disk to the new 802.11ac AirPort Extreme, not an Express, correct? If so, it works fine with both bus powered and self-powered drive enclosures, and I have no immediate explanation for what's going on.

Yes, besides the passage of time the only thing that is changing is the amount of available space on the backup volume, which could be a factor. Are you using separate drives for each Mac, or are they all being backed up to the same drive? If it's only one drive, is it partitioned or are they all sharing a single partition?
Are you sharing backup volumes with other, non-Time Machine files? That shouldn't cause the problem, but it's not a good idea.
What errors are being logged in system.log? Filter for backupd to find all Time-Machine related entries.

I think there might be information there on how to reset Time Machine to do a full backup. I think you basically have to reset it and start over.

I have a 2011 Apple Time Capsule with 2 TB of storage, which I use for Time Machine backups. I would like to add storage, or alternately just use a higher capacity hard drive for Time Machine backups. Can I attach a 3 TB external backup drive to the Time Capsule's USB port, for example, and use that for my backups instead of the internal hard drive? Apple says you can't do this with the Airport Extreme, but doesn't say whether it will work with the Time Capsule.

You may be going on a recollection, that I share, that at one time Apple stated this would be possible:

That was a long time ago, it has never been officially implemented, and at present they specifically say it cannot be done.
In summary, it may work, but probably won't, and even if it does it may not be reliable.

Backing up an external hard drive with time Machine

I backed up my internal disk with Time Machine, but I can not back up an external drive that I use for my media. I see the drive in the options part of Time Machine system preferences, but the minus sign to take it off of the "do not back up these drives" is blanked out. Any suggestions?

I successfully backed up the contents of an external hard drive, but the next time Time Machine did a backup, I didn't happen to have that drive connected, so Time Machine said it couldn't find it and deleted the existing backup. Is there any way to get it to keep the backup? The drive I want to back up is only used occasionally (naturally, anything I use more frequently is on my Mac) and I don't want to have to plug in both hard drives every time I want to run a backup, only to risk losing all of that history if I ever accidentally plug in only the backup drive. But I do want to keep Time Machine backups of that drive because it contains my iPhoto Library.

Some NAS (network storage) systems do claim to support Time Machine, with varying levels of success. For example, the Synology units have this feature. They're not officially supported by Apple, though.

I was using a WD Passport 2TB external drive for my Time Machine backup for iMac which has a 3TB drive. The drive is almost 1 year old and only bought it to for backing up with Time Machine. The drive failed when I tried to restore a iPhoto database to my iMac on Sunday. Today on Tuesday evening. Time Machine said it could not perform a successful back up due to Disk Failure. I ran the disk utility and it gave me error. I had to erase and reformat the drive.
I was able to erase and reformat the drive and ran the disk utlity again. And it says it is working fine. I dont plan to use these portable drives for backing.
I think its time to get a better Hard Drive for my Time Machine backups. Any suggestions?

WD commercial drives for consumers are the worst, as meant their "green / blue / red" series.
The best are Hitachi and Toshiba both statistically and otherwise.

Time Machine backups to AirDisks (e.g. HFS+ formatted USB HDD attached to Extreme) is unsupported, but has been successful by some. As well, once you decide to move any old TM backups (HDD connected directly to the Mac) to an AirDisk, you cannot continue backing up to your previous TM backup. The format it saves to vs. a local HDD is different. The folder structure you see becomes a sparsebundle/disk image via the AirDisk.

Trouble with Time Machine (runs constantly). Erase and install?

Trouble with Time Machine (runs constantly). Tried re-installation (equivalent of archive install) of Snow Leopard. Time Machine still unable to complete a back-up. Erase and install recommended at Genius Bar. Have backed up data to external HD using Super Duper. Should be a bootable backup. Last successful backup through Time Machine was 6/1/11. Not sure if I can access this back-up if I erase and re-install.
Computer shipped with Tiger (7/2007). Have original disks. Now running Snow Leopard. So: erase HD, install Tiger, then update to Snow Leopard? Start-up from Tiger disks does not appear to work (starting up holding "C" key). Suggestions? Want very much to transfer data to new iMac, but do not want to carry bugs forward. Very nervous about erasing HD. And have the questions above about reinstalling system software.

Well if you can hold option and boot off the Superdupes clone and it works fine then you should be set to do what you need to do to the original boot drive.
Disconnect all drives and c boot off the Snow Leopard install disk, use Disk Utility to Erase > format HFS+ journaled your internal boot drive.
Quit and reinstall OS X Snow Leopard, setup (do not use Setup/Migration Assitant!) and update to 10.6.8
When you setup the new install, use the same hard drive name and user name as you did before.
Now the free iLife that came on the Tiger disks you won't get naturally, but you can pick them off the disk with the shareware program called Pacifist.
install your programs from fresh sources, this way you don't get the "crap" from the older setup.
Once your machine is up and going. Hook up the clone and transfer your user folders over manually. With iTunes just replace the whole folder. Because you kept the same user and boot drive name as before, the playlists should be fine.
Once your all peachy, take the opportunity to clone this new setup to a external drive, label and disconnect.
Make another clone for day to day, or week to week clone updates and your just a hold option boot away for recovery.
You know Superdupes and Carbon Copy Cloner both have auto-scedualing/updating ability, so you can leave them plugged in and it will perform a update so your clone stays fresh and recent.
But you should keep a clone timed back about a couple of weeks back just in case you install something bad and don't learn about it right away.

Help with Time Machine Backups not working..

Let me preface this by saying I have spent the last day scouring the internet for solutions to my problem. I have tried every option that I have run across and have had no luck in resolving my problem. As a last resort, I'm turning here in hopes that you can be of help.
I have a 2012 Macbook Pro running Moutain Lion. I use an external HD for my time machine backups. I am having an issue with Time Machine not functioning. The initial error message I receive when I attempt to use TM to backup is: "Time machine couldn't coplete the backup to Rick's backup disk". "Unable to complete backup. an error occurred while creating the backup folder".
I searched the forums and net and found several things to do to try and resolve this issue. My computer will freeze out and not let me erase, or re-partition the the hard drive, so I switched it over to an older macbook of my girlfriends and am successfully able to erase, and re-partition the drive (using disk utility) as suggested by several forum postings I have read. I am able to run disk verify and disk repair and both say the disk is "ok" with no issues. The moment the erase and partition is done, her computer prompts a message : "Would you like to use this disk for Time Machine Backups" which tells me it is working properly. When I move it back to my macbook pro and attempt to run TM backup, it will now work and copy about 10g of my 120g before shutting down with this error message:
"Time Machine couldn't complete the backup to "Rick's Backup Disk". An error occurred while copying files. The problem may be temporary. If the problem persists, use disk utility to repair your backup disk."
If i attempt to re-run TM at that point, I get the original error message:
"Time machine couldn't coplete the backup to Rick's backup disk". "Unable to complete backup. an error occurred while creating the backup folder".
If I move the TM back to my Girlfriends computer and attempt to run TM, it will function properly and backup her entire harddrive. When I erase and try again on mine, I always end up back with the same issues. It's clearly something in my macbook that is screwing it up. Can anyone please offer some help! I'd be much appreciative.

There's a problem with a file on your system. See #C3 in the above link. It will show you how to locate the message(s) that describe the problem, then help you fix it. If that doesn't help, post back with details, including all the messages, what you've done, and the results.

What IP address does the TC have and what IP does the computer have?
We need more info as we really have no idea what your network looks like.
Modem router, model, type of broadband?
TC setup as bridge or router?
Is the computer getting internet via the TC?
Are you using wireless or ethernet?
Have you set IPv6 correctly to local link in the computer on whichever network client is doing the connection?
Did this work the first time for backup and has now failed? If so simply reboot the TC. It is a constant bug that the TC is lost to the network.

Success! Time Machine restored my iMac backup

Just to let you all know, we have amazing successes sometimes with Time Machine. I had backed up my machine to my Time Capsule, and a month and a half later, after running off my MacBook Pro, I was able to find a place that could swipe in my Time Capsule restored system to my iMac 5,1 whose hard drive had died. I had in the meantime, booted my MacBook Pro into Snow Leopard's installer disc, and ran Time Machine into an external hard drive that was 1 TB in size, and restored my system onto the hard drive. Then I took it into Best Buy, and then put my 1 TB hard drive and put it in my iMac, and now it is all back to normal! What a breath of fresh air. It is good to know when it works, it works great!

Seriously, that's exactly what it's supposed to do, and does most of the time. Isn't that why we pay the big bucks for a Mac?

Repaired back up with both Disk Utility & Drive Genius. Disk seems to be working fine. But, it won't back up.
