Successful backups but restore not possible?

Hello. I have a client with a SBS 2011 server who has been using Windows backup to back up to an external USB disk. They've probably done a couple dozen successful restores in the past two years. Today we tried to restore files but the only backup listed
is yesterday's. The GUI shows successful backups from the past week (and one failure). But Status -> All Backups -> View Details shows yesterday's successful backup, then jumps to last summer. I've tried to restore using the 'backup stored on another
location' option and browsed to the backup disk with the same result. The external disk is 2 TB with about 75% free space and has been the backup target since last summer. Maximum Shadow Copy Storage space on the external USB disk is UNBOUNDED. Why does the
backup show successful backups that cannot be restored?
Thanks.
Keith

Wbadmin get versions shows the same information that my screen shot does.

  • Backup and Restore not working or am I missing something??

I installed the Desktop Manager primarily to be able to save the info on my computer.  Only problem is when I go to Backup and Restore the button that allows me to backup (or restore) is not highlighed so it's not allowing me that option.  All it will allow me to access is the 'advanced' and 'options button' on the Backup and Restore window. I don't want to lose all my info again if the phone crashes so please HELP!  And it took me about 10 tries before the Desktop Manager successfully loaded on my computer so not sure if the problem was in the installation but when I look at the Desktop Manage window it shows 'disabled' and also doesn't allow me to choose any of the options on the bar at the top.  How do I enable this program??  When I tried loading the disk I got some message about now being able to run Adobe scripts so not sure if that might be part of the problem.
    Solved!
    Go to Solution.

Just realized that I had the backup and restore window open when I wrote the above post and when I closed that the window for the Desktop Manager did allow me to access the toolbar at the top but the Desktop Manager is still disabled.

  • Backup Windows 7 not possible, error code 0x81000101

Backing up Windows 7 impossible, it stops at 7% and after a while  a time out message will be shown with code 0x81000101. I tried everething as specified by cdobbs on earlier questions, no result. The external  backup disk, usb connected,  is 150 Gb, clean and formatted.  Backing up mine laptop, (Windows XP ) no problem at all. To copy C to the backup drive will not succeed either due to open system files, e.g. hiberfile.sys, pagefile.sys, ntuer.date etc. Any solution ?

This error can occur if the Shadow Copy services are not running. The backup applications and System Restore depend on these services.
    Perform the following.
    Open Control Panel.
Click the Classic View in the Tasks pane.
    Double click Administrative Tools.
    Double click Services.
Scroll down and double click the Microsoft Software Shadow Copy Provider.
In the Startup Type menu, select Automatic.
    Click the Start button.
    Click Apply / OK.
Next, scroll down to the Volume Shadow Copy service and perform the same steps.
Exit everything and reboot the computer.
    IF that doesn't work
Did your computer come with a Recovery Partition on the drive? (Check the computers documentation)
If it did, you cannot have any backup software or System Restore set to backup or monitor that drive.
    Go to Control Panel.
Click on Classic View in the Task Pane.
    Double click System.
Select Advanced System Settings in the Tasks Pane.
    Click the System Protection Tab.
In the Available Disks section, make sure that the backup partition is not selected. If it is, remove the check mark.
After this is done or if this does not work, go to Start/All Programs/Accessories/System Tools and click on Disk Cleanup.
In the Options dialog, select 'Files from all users on this computer'. Click the C: system drive. When the scan is completed, click the 'More Options' Tab. In the 'System Restore and Shadow Copies' section, click the 'Cleanup' button. In the 'Are you sure......' popup, click Delete. Click OK.
Wait for the Disk Cleanup to complete.
Now, go back into Disk Cleanup and follow the same procedure for any other drives that appear in the drop down menu where you selected the C: drive the first time.
Exit everything and reboot the computer.
After the computer reboots, check System Restore again. If System Restore is still not working, go back into System Protection and turn off System Restore for all drives and reboot the computer again. This will delete all restore points on all drives.
After the reboot, go back and enable System Restore for the C: volume only. Create a new restore point for that drive.
    Let me know the results.

  • Time machine completes backup but does not actually backup any files

I have had this problem sporadically with time machine for a while now, most of the time it works great and everything is smooth sailing, but every now and then time machine will run and go through all of the steps but it skips actually backing up any files. For example, if I put a new word document on my desktop right now and tell time machine to back up, everything will go as it should and time machine will run and go through all of the stages (making back up disk available, calculating changes, cleaning up) except it doesn't actually transfer any files. When I go into to time machine the new word document won't appear in any of the backups. Restarting my computer does fix this but it is a very inconvenient way to fix the problem and it also leaves me having to manually go into time machine to make sure that it is in fact backing up files. And no I do not have some weird exclusion in the time machine preferences.

Thanks you for your response. I was wondering if it didn't have to do with disk utility in some way. Just to be clear what do you mean when you say "altering other volumes on the same drive"?
If you have more than one partition on a drive, and add, delete, or resize any of them, Disk Utility does a +*Verify Disk+* on the entire disk. So even if you didn't touch the boot volume, whatever DU does will cause what you've seen.
It is rather odd, that it only affects some of us. Those who have it, have it consistently. It happens on any number of hardware configurations, and I could always reproduce it with a fresh install of SL on an empty partition, so it's clearly nothing to do with any settings, preferences, 3rd-party anything, etc.
This was reported to Apple in October; on November 12 the TM engineers were able to reproduce it. They don't tell us any more than that; all we can do is hope it'll be fixed in a future update.

  • Backup and restore not working.

Hello, I hope someone can help!
I backed-up my phone on 21-May as I had to send it for repairs.
I just got it back updated the Android software and now I am trying to restore my contacts.
Unfortunately, when I try to do so, using the PC Companion, it is switching to Xperia Transfer and then telling me...
    "New Xperia back-up required
Your Sony Xperia Z (C6603) backup was made with an old Android version which is not compatible with this application.
Please update your old Xperia phone/tablet to the latest available Android version, then make a new backup of your old Xperia phone/tablet using the Backup & Restore application.  [I tried this, it only restores photos and videos, won't restore contacts]
Once done, start this guide again and select your new backup."
As the phone was wiped when I sent it for repair, I cannot back it up!
How can I retrieve the contacts I backed-up last month?  I am sure they are on the computer, but I can't get them back onto the phone...
    Thanks,

Hello. I did a search for this problem, nut could not find the same problem. If I missed it, my apologies. I can log in to my MBP 800, but once my password is accepted, all I get is a blue screen, sometime with the standard desktop blue swirl background, sometimes just plain blue. I have rebuilt the directory with DiskWarrior, run fsck, swapped RAM chips, reset the SMC, etc. Nothing. The last thing that happened before this problem was that my MBP ran out of juice while on battery and shut itself down. Any ideas? TIA.
