Successful upgrade - Sharing the Love

When reading all the problem posts here, I was almost too afraid to upgrade me beloved iMac to Leopard. I had Tiger 10.4.11 purring right along, staying away from 3rd party interface add-on's and trying to keep my setup clean and simple. I can't remember the last time I had a kernel panic or had to force shut down an application. I do mostly photography and manage my music collection, 3200 photos and 45GB of music, and I use Office 2004 and VPN for work. I'm not what most would consider a power user.
My experience so far has been painless. I ordered Leopard 10.5.1. Family Pack, a 500GB Iomega Firewire drive, and Quicken 2007 (I had 2005 which isn't Leopard compatible) from Apple on Friday and they arrived today (Monday). Cudos to the Apple Store... 2 day shipping means 2 day shipping!
The Iomega drive is fast and quiet. Only 2 hours to backup 104GB with Carbon Copy Cloner. Then I slid in the Leopard DVD and ran the installer and left the default Upgrade selections alone. Took 1 hr 10 minutes total to install and reboot. Downloaded the Software Updates and I'm up and running.
I had to download an update for Cisco VPN (4.9.1 build 100) and it runs beautifully with Chicken Of The VNC. Connected remotely to 4 PC's at work simultaneously... no problems.
So far, Quicken 2007, Pocket Quicken 2.5.1, Palm HotSync and the iSync conduit, Photoshop Elements 3.0, The Printshop 2, Word and Excel 2004, iWork '08, iLife '08, Chessmaster 9000, Doom 3, and Hoyle's Card Games all run great under Leopard, though I haven't pushed them to their limits. My Epson CX5000 prints and scans with the updated Scan.app 2.95A.
So, like I said, so far it's been easy and painless. Anyone reading these boards needs to remember that most people post problems, not success stories. Just wanted to share

I agree with you whole heartedly. I've used Apple and Macs for as long as they have been around. If I wasn't a long time loyal Apple/Mac user and I read some of the problems that I have see on this forum, I'd be scared about buying a Mac. However, you'd have to pry it out of my cold dead hands.

Firefox has suddenly gone wrong. I was successfully running both Firefox and Internet Explorer 8 on Windows 7. My laptop is new and has plenty of RAM and HDD. I auto-accept upgrades including the most recent Firefox upgrade and the suggested upgrade to Adobe Flash 10.1. But after this, Firefox stopped working and does not work when I re-load Firefox 3.6. Also IE8 now works very slowly and does not locate major websites like Microsoft without a 'can't find the website message' and having to pressing Return a second time. When I do get to the Mozilla website and click on the button to try to download Firefox 3.6.6, I get this message "Oops! Internet Explorer could not find mozilla3.snt.utwente.nl". Can you help with what has gone wrong? As it stands, I can't use Firefox at all. Note: because Firefox did not work after the upgrade, I've downloaded the IE8 version of the Adobe Flash 10.1. What I really want is to be able to use both Firefox and IE8. But is this possible if they use different versions of Adobe Flash?

I have been having the same problem as the original poster. After upgrading to Ffx 3.6.6, the program asks you to upgrade to Flash Player Plugin 10.1. I download and installed 10.1 only to find videos weren't loading.
In my case, the problem is the previous installation of Flash Player (9.0.47) was somehow messing things up. To fix this, because I already had Flash plugin 10.1 installed I had to uninstall 10.1 using the uninstaller from adobe and then manually remove any files related the old flash player plugin 9.0.47
Here is a run-down of my process:
    0. To check if you have a previous installation of the Flash Plugin lurking around, in Firefox go to Tools -> Add-ons -> Plugins (tab). At this point you may seen both Flash plugins.
    1. Proceed to uninstall Flash Plugin 10.1. Adobe provides an uninstaller here: http://kb2.adobe.com/cps/141/tn_14157.html
( you have to make sure you have nothing running when you execute the installer).
    2. On my Mac (sorry I don't know what it is in Windows) I searched the hard drive for any files/folders with "Shockwave". I found a folder called "Shockwave 10". It wasn't removed by Adobe's uninstaller. For safety I deleted it and then emptied the trash.
    3. I then went to My HD -> Library -> Internet Plugins.
Remove the file and folder named "Flash player.old"
    4. Restarted; ran the Adobe Flash Player 10.1 installer. Restarted again.
    5. Opened up ffx and double checked the plugins list (see step 1). Version 10.1 is installed and available. Went to problem sites to test it out and Success!
    Hope this helps.

  • I have two Ipad2's. I successfully upgrade one to IOS6 and now the 2nd one has gotten to the point of signing in with my Apple Id and it keeps saying "Problem connecting to the server".  What now?

I have two Ipad 2's. They were both IOS4. I successfully upgraded one to IOS6.  When I did the second one, when I got to the end of the process where it asks for your AppleID it kept saying there was a problem with the server. Same desktop, same AppleId for both Ipads, but it wouldn't let me sign in. What can I do to fix this?

hi i had the same problem today when i updated my itunes to latest version. however, i have just found my songs in the 'itunes media' folder. this was accessed through 'my music'  then keep clicking through until you find itunes media and all my library songs were in there and i then just added these files to my library and all were restored however, i have lost all my playlists but at least my 700 songs are back. very dissapointed with apple that they have let this happen with their latest update, the previous version was miles better than this one . hope you find them. stevo

I-Photo won't open even though I have upgraded to OS X Yosemite and downloaded the I-Photo upgrader.
But have you run the the iPhoto Library upgrader? It is installed in Applications > Utilities. Launch it and direct it to your iPhoto library.
Which version of iPhoto did you upgrade from?
The upgrader is only necessary, if you have been  running iPhoto7.1.2 or earlier.

Check your Windows settings along this contribution from Chrism0:
    https://discussions.apple.com/message/16568477#16568477
Also check that the ports 5353 and 5354 (Bonjour (mDNSResponder), AirPlay, Home Sharing, Printer Discovery) are open on Windows Firewall.

  • I lost my connection with my AirPort Base Station when I upgraded to the OS Maverick.  How can I get my system to recognize the base station again?

I lost my connection with my AirPort Base Station when I upgraded to the OS Maverick.  I can still see the Internet, but the Time Machine cannot backup now because it cannot locate the AirPort base station.  How can I resolve this issue?
Steps already taken with zero success:
    1. Restarted the AirPort Base Station multiple times.
    2. Restarted the Mac Pro multiple times.
    3. Looked online for AirPort update for 6.3.2 version.
Other Apple products in my house can still see the AirPort Base Station, however my Mac Pro and Mac Book Pro cannot.
    Please advise.

That information helps. If you want to use one of the SmartStor's disks as a repository for sharing your iTunes Library, then do not configure that disk as a RAID. Format it with Disk Utility using the Erase tab. Mac OS Extended (Journaled) is the correct choice.
Connect it to your Time Capsule, then use AirPort Utility to configure access requirements for sharing it on your network. It should appear as a shared volume in the Finder, available to all your Macs as you thought it should.
I also thought maybe the extra HD space would be added to the existing Airport Disk.  It isn't.
Correct. There is no way to do that. The only way to increase the capacity of a Time Capsule's hard disk is to replace the Time Capsule (or its disk, if you are amenable to disassembling it) with a larger capacity model.
If you also want to use the SmartStor as a RAID, that is another story, and you should probably attack that problem separately.

  • How I successfully upgraded from iPhoto '09 to iPhoto '11 - Glitch Free.

I've been eagerly reading the forums PRIOR to installing iPhoto '11 and I'm about to dive in. I have an iMac 2.8 GHz Intel Core 2 Duo with 6GB RAM running Snow Leopard OS X 10.6.4.
I'm currently running iPhoto '09 (version 8.1.2) with 1403 events, 41,133 photos, 24 Faces and 29 Places. I have dozens of Albums and Smart Albums, Mobile Me Galleries, as well as 5 Keepsakes-3 cards and 2 books. The library itself is 185 GB in size and resides in an Admin User account in /Users/User/Pictures
Here is what I've done PRIOR to installing iPhoto '11
    _*Fixed Permissions:*_
    1. Holding down OPTION+COMMAND keys and then launching iPhoto '09 and selecting "Examine and repair iPhoto Library file permissions." I also rebuilt the small thumbnails but nothing else.
    2. Opening disk utility and repairing disk permissions on Macintosh HD
    3. Downloaded BatChmod and changed all the permissions as suggested in the links below. Initially the checkmark for apply to enclosed folders and files was not available. I selected another file then returned and it was available.
Also my permissions for the iPhoto library (and a quick survey of the package contents -right click with mouse to do this) were set to Read Write for my User account, for Group (_unknown in my case) and for Everyone without running BatChmod. Select your iPhoto library and press COMMAND+I to check this. I chose to run BatChmod anyways to ensure every file was indeed wide open as far as permissions go.
    http://www.macchampion.com/arbysoft/ *-BatChmod link*

    _*Repaired Fonts*_
    1. Opened Font Book and selected all the fonts then from the menus:
    -Edit > Resolve Duplicates
    -File > Validate Fonts
I then deleted the most severely affected fonts marked with red. I still had several marked yellow "minor problems were found. Proceed with caution."
    Backups
    1. Time Machine Backup on External Drive, plus another Time Machine Backup on another drive but it's about a week out of date.
    2. Copy of iPhoto '09 application on a different External Drive then the Time Machine Backup (Usually found at the folder /Applications)
    3. Copy of iPhoto '09 library folder on a different External Drive then the Time Machine Backup (Usually found in the folder /Users/User/Pictures )
This way I've got two ways of going backwards to iPhoto 09 if necessary - using the Time Machine backups (which appears to be painful for some) and failing that option simply dragging back actual untouched copies of iPhoto '09.app and iPhoto '09 library with photos, preferences, keepsakes, events etc all intact. (iPhoto '11 makes changes to the iPhoto '09 library files and removes the '09 app as well).
I then turned off Time Machine to prevent it from backing up further.
    Install
Then in went the iLife '11 disc. No problems with the installation. After the install I *immediately opened Software Update from the Apple menu, and did not open iPhoto.*
iPhoto Update 9.1 came up and I installed it. A restart was not required but I did one anyways. Interestingly enough when I did a COMMAND+I to get info on the new iPhoto '11 library it showed different permissions of User -read/write, and Everyone -read/write. No groups listed.
I then opened iPhoto '11 and got the following message with the options to Quit or Upgrade. I clicked Upgrade.
" *The photo library needs to be upgraded to work with this version of iPhoto* Your photo library will not be readable by previous versions of iPhoto after the upgrade. The upgrade process for very large libraries may take an hour or more to complete."
My fairly _*large 185 GB library took 28 minutes to upgrade*_ and showed a progress bar as well as the monochromatic spinning wheel.
Success! All of my photos, events, places and albums, smart albums, MobileMe books and cards and slideshows are present and I can even edit a book I started. My iPhoto library is the same size give or take a MB.
Was all this necessary? We'll never know. I certainly wouldn't expect a first time Mac user to do the BatChmod steps or the Font Book steps, or even the Permissions steps, however I would expect everyone to do the backup steps of at least Time Machine.
We are talking valuable photos which are not replaceable, some people run into burning buildings to save their photos, so a quick backup seems reasonable. Turns out I didn't need my backups but I had no hesitation doing the upgrade with them in place.
    In Summary:
    1. Repair Permissions on your hard drive and iPhoto Library (see above for specifics)
    2. Remove duplicate Fonts and Validate and Remove trouble fonts in Font Book
    3. Backup, Backup, Backup. If possible with Time Machine and also separate exact copies of iPhoto library folder and iPhoto app itself.
    4. Install iLife '11 and restart.
    5. _*DO NOT OPEN iPhoto '11 YET*_, but DO OPEN Software Upgrade and install iPhoto version 9.1 (iPhoto '11 is version 9 of the software, iPhoto '09 is version 8)
    6. Open iPhoto '11 and wait patiently for the upgrading of your previous library.
This process worked seamless for me, and was headache free. I'm now also going to keep an offsite backup of my computer either in the cloud or at a friend, family or work location.
    Hope this helps!

Thanks so much - Iphoto has been driving me nuts for a while now. Permanent spinning wheel in Places and requiring force quit almost everytime. Following the advice to repair Iphoto permissions removed the spinning wheel from Places and Iphoto is completely back to normal

  • Has anyone successfully upgraded a Lenovo 3000 N100 to Windows 7?

I have a 3000 N100 with 2 GB of memory on Vista.  Do I need special drivers or firmware changes to successfully upgrade to Windows 7 (32 bit)?  I know I can't increase the memory and am getting a lot of paging with Vista.  Thanks for the help.

You can see my 11/18/2009 post.
The upgrade to windows 7 has been easy on both the Lenovo N100 Notebook (exception - soundMax audio drivers) an an E-Machine Desktop.
I still have no Notebook  DVD audio - seems that there are no SoundMax Win 7 drivers and the Vista compatible option doesn't work.
The Desktop has Realtek and Win 7 drivers are available so every thing now works OK.
We did lose functionality for a 1996 game for which no patch will be made - it wants to control the graphics display and apparently can't use the Win 7 10yrs newer drivers.
Our HP AIO Printer worked with the Win 7 included Drivers but I needed to download the Win 7 files to have the HP programs (Update, Scan, Fax, etc.,).
The Desktop was done with the Upgrade option, the Notebook with the Custom one.

  • How can I get the love back?

Remember the anthem in 1984? The call for independence? The hammer that shattered the drone which kept us all in line - servants to the man? I do. I begged the hammer to be thrown and cheered when the glass shattered. I evangelized for the awakening and paid with my ducketts and  dreams. I have given the wry smile to poor lemmings who followed Bill's way and stepped in line. I was proud to know I'd avoided the man. I was me, not them. But I worry that I've fed the beast. Have I been an unknowing servant to something worse? Have I been so blind to miss that I was beholden, but with a loose collar and long leash? I hope not ... Apple please help me see I haven't been wrong with every keystroke on my IIe, IIci, Bondi, iPods, MBPs, Airs and more. Send me a sign. Show me the light again. Set me free again.
iCloud, iTunes Match, Macs, iPods, iPhones and family do not work together. Period. You see, my wife, two children and I were .Mac users on a family account - we each had / have .mac email addresses which have become our AppleIDs. We happily purchased and shared (within the family) bazillions of dollars worth of music, video and apps together and under our own accounts. We all enjoyed our independence from one-another and from you. And it all worked well. Very well. But now you've gone and thrown it all away. Nothing works well.
We've had to merge new purchases to a new "family" AppleID.
Updating iOS apps on our iPhones requires entering EACH of our four (ahem, now five) AppleIDs and passwords.
Sharing music and using Match meant centralizing to one library, centralizing playlists, effing up syncing, and creating a permissions nightmare on our shared iMac that houses the master music library. (now iTunes fails to open if one user account forgot to close iTunes before not logging out.)
Sigh. There more but I'm exhausted.
This is a nightmare. I'm now dad and IT guy for the family. Remember when using a Mac meant you didn't need an IT guy? I want those days again. I don't want to feel powerless under the thumb of the man. Like I need to get OSX or iOS certified. Seriously? Certified?
Apple: just get it right. For gods sake. Fix this cloud debacle. Give families who willingly, happily, legally used .Mac together - the familial womb for which the next Apple revolution will either prosper or wither and die - the same independence they / we had before the cloud and the match.
I'd settle if you would Sync our purchases to a single account at the very least. At least that would suck less.
Give us the chance to love you again. Fix this please. Please?

Thanks. I appreciate your help. But that's not quite what's happening. Here are the specifics of our scenario:
    Our accounts then:
[email protected] was the master account.
[email protected] was a secondary account.
[email protected] was a secondary account.
[email protected] was a secondary account.
Secondary accounts were subordinate by way of mobile me, family accounts if you will.
    On our shared iMac then:
User dad had a [email protected] iTunes library.
User mom had a [email protected] iTunes library.
User kid1 had a [email protected] iTunes library.
User kid2 had a [email protected] iTunes library.
The libraries were stored in the /user/music/itunes folders for each user.
Purchases were made on each user's library.
The media / content (videos and music) was shared between the libraries and stored on a shared drive. The apps were stores in each user's /user/music/itunes folder.
[email protected] was used for all OSX app store purchases on the Mac by each user.
    On our iOS devices then:
On dad's iPhone, [email protected] was used for everything.
On mom's iPhone, [email protected] was used for everything.
On kid1's iPod, [email protected] was used for everything.
On kid2's iPhone, [email protected] was used for everything.
The iOS devices were sync'd with each /user/music/itune's iTunes library.
We each had unique playlists and our own apps.
Purchases were made on each iOS device.
So, each user was fully independant in terms of purchasing and use.
The dilemma: iTunes Match (and iCloud) cannot sync four libraries unless there are four independant iTunes Match accounts. This would forever divide our family. Yes, it's that dramatic. (smile)
So, with advice from upper-level Apple Tech Support, I made a master account with a new AppleID: [email protected]. This account would become the hub for iTunes Match and all future purchases on iOS and OSX devices.
    Now we look like this:
    Our accounts now:
[email protected] is the master account.
[email protected] is a user account.
[email protected] is a user account.
[email protected] is a user account.
[email protected] is a user account.
The master account is assigned to OSX app, Match and iTunes.
User accounts are linked to mail / cal / find my / etc. activities.
    On our shared iMac now:
[email protected] is the shared iTunes library.
User dad shares [email protected] iTunes library.
User mom shares [email protected] iTunes library.
User kid1 shares [email protected] iTunes library.
User kid2 shares [email protected] iTunes library.
The [email protected] iTunes library is located on a shared drive.
As a side note, the permissions now get totally muffed up when any user forgets to close their iTunes account and another user opens their iTunes client ... sharing the same library. A nice little bonus I wasn't prepared for.
Purchases are made through the [email protected] library.
Apps have been consolidated (from each /user/music/itunes folder) to the now shared folder.
    * Old apps are owned by the users. New apps are owned by [email protected]. Updates require the owner's AppleID / password.
** If a user AppleID is entered in iTunes to update his apps, Match is broken. Match gets reset when [email protected] signs in again.
[email protected] is used for all OSX app store purchases on the Mac by each user.
** Old apps are owned by [email protected]. New apps are owned by [email protected]. Updates require the owner's AppleID / password.
    On our iOS devices now:
On dad's iPhone, [email protected] is used for mail / cal / etc.; [email protected] is used for music / match / iTunes.
On mom's iPhone, [email protected] is used for mail / cal / etc.; [email protected] is used for music / match / iTunes.
On kid1's iPod, [email protected] is used for mail / cal / etc.; [email protected] is used for music / match / iTunes.
On kid2's iPhone, [email protected] is used for mail / cal / etc.; [email protected] is used for music / match / iTunes.
The iOS devices are sync'd to [email protected] iTunes library.
Purchases are made on each iOS device to [email protected].
    * We now have shared playlists and everyone's apps.
So, each user is now not fully independant in terms of purchasing and use.

  • In iMovie when I try to share a project to a file on an external hard drive it will work the first time but subsequently it says it is sharing but gives no time and file name and in fact just sits there not sharing the file.

I have iMovie 10.0.4.  I want to transfer some old DV tape videos to MPEG 4 files to be stored on a 4 TB external drive. I successfully imported the video to iMovie, created a project by moving all captured files into a project and the first time I shared the project to a file  it worked as expected.  Every subsequent try to transfer another video would fail to transfer.  When I clicked save it gives the warning that it is too big for iCloud, iso I click create on this computer.  The progress circle comes up with no indication of progress.  The show activity drop down just says sharing to "file" no file name as in the first one and indicates no time remaining.  In fact it just sits there apparently doing nothing.  I'v tried it a half dozen times, deleted everything and started over.  It transfers the first project to file and then nothing on additional tries.  What do I have wrong, am I missing something?

In iTunes 11 uncheck the preferences setting in in the iTunes Preferences panel "Advanced > Copy Files to iTunes Media folder when adding to Library"

  • For the love of god do not shut down this store in my town.

    To whom it may concern,
Lets get down to business on this problem that my town is facing. One, the Verizon corporate store in Escanaba, Mi is closing? For the love of god why are you guys doing this? I have had a great experience in dealing with Verizon over the years from helping me with my phone problems to just being very helpful when I need a new product upgrade. The other affiliate store in my area (That will remain nameless) that are not knowledgeable as those folks at the corporate store. One time I went to an affiliate store to edge up and that was a complete nightmare and a half. I asked for a phone (HTC One M8 Windows) that I wanted and what did these guys do? They sold me the same exact model but it was the Androd version! The saleswoman (Which was the store manager) told me you can make this into a windows version (Which is a big NO-NO because that would void my warranty for Jail-breaking!) and messed up my contract to the point i couldn't (also breaking contract) edge up for 30 days! After fixing this at the Escanaba corporate store to the actual phone after that mess up when I didn't want the Android Phone! So, if you want to keep your loyal customers like myself that is a military veteran that owns and manage a Computer Company Also my other relatives that own trucking companies and insurance agencies. I would suggest that you please reconsider this disastrous move of closing the best Wireless Store in my area.
    Thank you for your time.

what do you mean by coming back? you delete the glow, save the file and when you reopen that file is the glow present or just after you select one of the layer comps?

when you opened the shared library with the newer version of iPhoto (iPhoto '11) you were given a warning that your library would be converted and could not be used by older versions - you clicked ok to go ahead - there is no updo available - either upgrade to iphoto '11 of the MBP or load your backup of the iPhoto '09 library on it - older versiopns of i{Photo can not read newer libraries

  • Touchsmart 600-1120 successfully upgraded to Windows 8 Pro

I just wanted to report my Touchsmart 600-1120 (BK139AA) was successfully upgraded from Win7 64 bit to Windows 8 Pro 64 bit, and I haven't run into any issues.   Here are the steps I went though.
    1. Made disk image backup using Win7 Backup and Restore.
    2. Ran the Windows 8 advisor tool to have a record the computer passes minimum requirements and I had a list of what apps will no longer work. I did go ahead and removed all of them. I never did use those apps much anyways.
    3. Ordered Windows 8 Pro upgrade DVD from Amazon.  I potentially had multiple computers to upgrade, and wanted the DVD.  Requested the free product key to unlock the Media Center add-on pack and received it in two days via email.
    4. Made another disk image backup using Win7 Backup and Restore in the event a Win7 restore is needed.
    5. Ready to upgrade.  Inserted the 64 bit DVD, nothing happened.  Manually launched Startup.exe on the DVD.
    6. Selected option to upgrade Win7, keeping all docs and preferences and let it go.  Took an hour or so, I didn't keep track.  Rebooted a couple of times and responded to any prompts for info.  When I received the logon screen for the first time, I ejected the upgrade DVD.
    7. When I logged in for the first time, I had no issues with the touch driver.  The touch was very reponsive.  Played around for a while exploring a bit.  It's actually lots of fun.  I've never been exposed to an ipad or tablet, so this was the first time I've experienced a "tabletized" interface for lack of a better term.
    8. Followed the instructions in the email to install and unlock the Media Center pack.  It took a while to add the software.  My only concern was if the AVerMedia TV card (A327) would work.  After the install there was the normal Media Center icon shown on the app tiles.  Launched it and had go through the process of setting up the TV tuner.  Once it found the tuner card (yea!) I told it to use the existing preferences for channels and such and it worked like it did in Win7.
Launched Windows Update and it found a few things to update.  I played around for a couple of hours to get familiar with the new interface, and how to display the old Win 7 desktop.  It took me a while to figure out how to make an image backup.  I had another computer handy with internet access and it was quicker to google to find answers to my questions.  One of which is the option to use the familiar Win 7 backup and restore, so I made a new disk image with the new OS and stored it away.
I have this computer on the kitchen counter and use it mainly for TV watching while cooking and occasional recipe lookups.  In the Windows store, there are some free recipe apps, like allrecipes.com.  I installed a bunch of the free recipe and news apps.  I don't know if I'd use the touch screen on a regular basis, although it is nice to have, it leaves lots of fingerprints, particuarily in a kitchen environment.
I'm very relieved I didn't run into hoops I had to jump thorough considering reading about Win8 upgrade issues others have experienced.

Hello, I was also able to go to Windows 8Pro, but have been unsuccessful trying to go to 8.1 or to 10, great PC feel I will need to restore it back to Windows 7. Have you been able to at least get it up to Windows 8.1? Thanks
