Successfully downgraded from 1.1.3 to 1.1.2 just using itunes

Those who don't know how to downgrade the firmware back to previous version can refer to the following method, which I've just applied to my ipod touch. Now I have the beautiful crystal-transparent dock again!
My preparation:
itunes 7.6 & ipod touch with firmware 1.1.3
Process:
1. Make sure your ipod touch is connected to itunes and stay at the home screen;
2. Hold the power button and home button simultaneously until ipod touch is shut down and disappears from itunes. Then move your finger away from the power button but keep holding the home button.
3. After a while, ipod touch shows up again in itunes in restoration mode. What you should do now is just to: a) [for Windows users] hold shift and mouse click on restore; b) [for Mac users] hold option and mouse click on restore. A window will come out and you choose the firmware file either of 1.1.1 or 1.1.2 on your local disk. In 5 minutes you get your favourite interface again!
Your ipod touch will show a white screen for seconds during the restoration process and just don't worry it's normal.
The idea comes from here but you should be able to read Chinese...lol

musicvan,
If you've purchased the apps, be sure and back up the file that allows them to work on your PC/iPod. I lost mine due to having to restore my PC's OS and now I cannot restore (the file is no longer on my PC due to the restore) or even purchase them again because they are in my purchase history as already being purchased. Currently awaiting help from tech support.

  • Successful downgrade from Lion to Snow Leopard?

I will get to my question at the end, but first I must explain the situation:
I have an MBP Intel Core 2 Duo, circa 2006.
The case was falling apart so I bought a new MBP Intel Core i7, September 2011 model.
The new MBP came with Lion, which to my horror did not support PPC applications.  I know some of the Mac OS hobbyists will say 'get over it'.  However, I use Macs professionally and since I want to eat (so to speak), I must work, and to work efficiently I need Rosetta because there is quite simply no replacements available for some of my quirky software.
Lion has a couple of ways of stopping you upgrading back to Snow Leopard.  Here is a simple way to do it, which allows you to keep Lion.
Boot lion and use the disk utility to create a new partition:  I took 400 GB for the new SL partition and left Lion with 100 GB.  Lion is pretty neat in allowing you to repartition on the fly.
Do the latest software update on the old computer (10.6.8).  Restart new computer in target disk mode and connect to old computer using a firewire.  On the old computer boot up Carbon Copy Cloner (freeware).  Set the old computer as source and the SL partition as traget on the new computer.  Simply accept all the default settings on CCC and let it to Clone (ie. backup) the source onto the target.  CCC will generate an exact copy of the contents of the old computer's hard drive on the SL partition on the new machine.  I believe it will aslo transfer FileVault protected accounts even if the user is not logged in.
Shut down new computer.  Reboot holding down the optino key.  For some reason the new SL partition was named IEF Drive (or something similar, I cant remember because it reverted back to its original name after a restart).  The machine will boot into SL.  Go to system preferences and select SL partion as your startup disk.  All done in about 4 hours, most of which is waiting for CCC to finish!  Whoopeeee.
So far it seems to me like EVERYTHING works just fine.  I was particularly suprized that the Thunderbolt port was able to drive my external display either via vga or hdmi adaptors.  I half expected that not to work because it is a brand new feature.  Of course, it may not work with a Thunderbolt display. Howerer, since the machine is duel boot and I can go to Lion any time I feel like it.
I did have to reinstally Application Enhancer so that my Unsanity Haxies would work, but you have to do that after any migration.
    Performance
Geekbench 32 bit overall score:   lion, 8473:  SL, 8321
    Novabench:  lion, 882:  SL  859
At first I had the impression that Lion was a bit swifter on start up and GUI response, so I used migration assistant to migrate my old computer user account onto the Lion partition.  As expected all the login items and extra system services that came across from the old machine had a penalty for start up and shut down.  After timing both I find that SL is slightly faster up and down than Lion.  Even so, I am sorry not to be able to use Lion as I liked the look and feel of it right from the get go.
Never mind ...its function over form for me every time
Now my question is to ask whether others have exposed any weaknesses in a SL down/upgrade?  It would help if you would post here so that I can head off any problems before I discover them in a critical situation.
Also, do the experts think SL will match the 64 bit performance of Lion, which I was unable to test because I am too mean to pay the 19 bucks for Geekbench?
Finally, I must say that after many years of daily use on countelss machines CCC has never once let me down, unlike TimeMachine.

I had said that the "function" of the user preferences in the ByHost folder won't be preserved on a different computer, not that the files wouldn't be there!
The ByHost folder contents are accurately preserved in a CCC clone, but the .plist files themselves are tagged with the "hardware UUID" of the particular computer they were made on, and will only function on that computer. Peek inside at the names of these preference files and you'll see.  It's not an important issue in practice.
From Mike Bombich's CCC Knowledge Base, here:
Can I back up one computer and use the clone to restore another computer?
As long as the architectures match (e.g. intel vs. ppc), then the answer is **probably yes**. However, there are two caveats.
Some of your preferences on Mac OS X are considered "host-specific." Preferences such as these will be ignored if you boot your cloned operating system and data from another machine. For example, the screen saver preferences are host-specific -- if you boot another machine from your bootable clone and the screen saver kicks in, you will notice that it has reverted to default settings. Do not fear that you have lost any data, your original preferences will be "restored" when you boot again from your original computer. To learn exactly what preferences are host-specific, navigate in the Finder to your home directory, then to Library/Preferences/ByHost.
Don't install older versions of Mac OS than what comes with your computer. When you get a brand new Mac from Apple, it usually has a specific version of Mac OS X installed on it, and further, a specific "build" number. If you install an older version or build of the OS, for example by cloning your older Mac to it, then it may behave unexpectedly. When migrating your old Mac to your new Mac, be sure that your old Mac has been updated to at least one later release than what came on the new Mac. For example, if your new Mac came with 10.4.7, update your old Mac to 10.4.8 before migrating. If such an update is not available, use the Migration Assistant instead.

  • My ipod classic is in recovery mode- if i restore it and eveything gets deleted, will i still be able to get all my music back from my old computer even though i recently started using itunes through my laptop?

i have an ipod classic and it's in recovery mode. I recently started a new itunes library on my laptop instead of the family computer, but managed to keep all my music. Now it's in recovery mode and it looks like I have no choice but to restore it to factory settings. If I do that, will I still be able to go back to my old computer and get all my albums back on my ipod? I would import my cds onto my laptop but unfortunately it doesn't take discs.

You have no choice but to restore from backup. See:
    iOS: How to back up
The iPod backup that iTunes makes does not include synced media like apps and music. They have to be in the iTunes library before your restore from iTunes backup.

  • Why is a new user account created every time I upload files from my old PC. Can't you just use the same user account all the time?

I'm a new Mac user and am finding my way slowly around it. One question: why is a new user account created every time I upload files from my old PC?

Because you're using the Migration Assistant, and it can't migrate data to an existing user account. Transfer everything at once or use a different method.

  • Why hasen't Itunes been updated from the ground up? I would love to use Itunes as my be all and end all entertainment player. That would include playing hard media such as DVDs and Blu Rays.

I would just like to know why Itunes isn't the be all/end all when it comes to being the center of anyone's home entertainment system?
I would also like to know why Itunes hasn't changed ANY in many years?
    Just curious ...
    Greg

It has changed and it is bloated enough as it is.  Since the early days they have added Ping, Match, Genius, a whole media store interface, concomitant movie playing, the whole syncing business with a multitude of i-devices.
There is no need to add a DVD player since DVD Player stands alone quite nicely as it is.  Additionally Apple is phasing out DVDs (note the demise of iDVD, all software now being downloads only, and the disappearance of DVD drives from newer models) since of course you're supposed to just get your movies from the iTunes Store.

  • Downgrade from ios6

Search the YouTube and Google Otmar, you will find, what you need.
Entire thread about downgrading here was just deleted, and my post containing link to YouTube video plus list of three personal reasons to downgrade marked as part of so called "inappropriate activities". Yes, I now understand Apple philosophy more clearly.
Just using iTunes to restore my iPad is now "inappropriate activity"? Probably yes. Ok, it's time to change some gadgets.

  • Windows XP Pro SP2 cd-rom after downgrading from Vista

    Hi everybody.
I successfully downgraded my T61p from Vista to XP Pro SP2 using the downgrade cd-roms send by Lenovo.
Everything seems to work well. I downloaded all drivers. No problem.
But I recently installed a rather old software that I frequently used on my old A31p. This software (a Microsoft program !) has automatically modified some files from XP Pro without any autorization.
Once it was done, I was asked by the system to insert the original Windows XP Pro SP2 cd-rom to repair this modification.
Of course, the (Vista to XP) downgrade cd-rom set was not recognized by the Thinkpad as the original XP set.
    An original cd-rom which I finally don't have !
I tried with an original XP Pro SP2 cd-rom bought a few years ago for my A31p. Unsuccessful.
Where could I find the XP Pro SP2 cd-rom corresponding to the downgraded system ?
Thanks for your help and suggestions.
    Regards.

    Thinkpad A31p - T42p - T61p - TP Tablet

    James,
    thanks for your answer.
But I wrote on my first post "I tried with an original XP Pro SP2 cd-rom bought a few years ago for my A31p. Unsuccessful."
Thus, I don't see any difference between an original Microsoft Windows XP2 Pro SP2 version cd-rom and one created by burning a downloaded version of the OS. An original was not recognized, what would a copy do ?
If possible, it might be probably better to create an XP Pro SP2 cd-rom from the "Rescue and Recovery" files which were reinstalled when downgrading from Vista to XP. (I hate the word "downgrade" : while I was doing it, I had the feeling I was upgrading my Thinkpad !)
I have been using for several years (and still use) an A31p (Since 2002, 8 to 10 hours a day) and a T42p. IMHO, the T61p is the same category of "great" notebooks. Thinkpads are really the best notebooks I have ever used. I noted no significant difference between IBM and Lenovo Thinkpads.

  • Mid 2010 Macbook Pro (7,1) - Downgrading from Mountain Lion (10.8.3) to Snow Leopard

    Hi everyone!
I am looking for some help with downgrading my macbook pro from ML back down to SL. I'll start off with some information about my case:
I bought this computer mid 2010 - I believe in July, if that matters. It is a Macbook Pro 7,1 model. The computer came with two disks, one being the Snow Leopard 10.6.3 install dvd, and the other being the applications install dvd. I do still have these dvd's, sitting beside me as I type this. Just like many others, I upgraded my computer to Lion, and from there went to Mountain Lion. I have been on Mountain Lion for several months now, currently running 10.8.3. I know a lot of you out there are disappointed with this OS, and many have experienced significant adverse effects on the overall performance of their computer. That being said, I also know that a lot of you have not had these sorts of issues running the OS. As you can tell, I mysef fall into the first category, as I have not had the greatest experience with it. It just seems to tire out my computer at activity levels which, on Snow Leopard, would not be problematic. I say tire out here in that my computer will overheat, slow down, and even sometimes crash (the crashes primarily begin with the spinning rainbow wheel, attempts to quit / force quit the applications I am running, followed by complete and utter frozenness). When this happens, I have no choice but to press the power button until the computer shuts off, then I restart, occasioanlly taking multiple attempts because of kernel panics the first one or two times. Who knows why this happens...I upgraded my RAM a couple months ago from 4GB to 8GB, which has seemed to help some but not fix the problem entirely. So, I have been wanting to downgrade back to Snow Leopard.
Ok so, I have made multiple attempts at this. For starters, I can tell you that the computer simply will not boot from the Install DVD (it is the one which came with the computer, not a retail version or anything like that). Additionaly, I cannot restore the SL DMG file from the dvd, neither to my hard drive nor to a USB drive. Because of this, I ended up trying this: I downloaded the snow leopard installation files (I believe just the content of the DVD ripped from the disc) via a torrent. I then got a 16 GB USB flash drive, wiped and formatted it (Mac OS Extended (Journaled)), and copied to the USB drive the install file I downloaded. I'll also note that I have done the same thing for Mountain Lion, copying the install file from the app store to a separate 16 GB USB drive. Ok, onto the results of my attempts at downgrading:
Each time I have tried to downgrade, I have taken the following step:
    1) Power down the computer
    2) Insert Snow Leopard USB drive
    3) Boot up the computer, holding the option/alt key
    4) Selecting the Snow Leopard USB drive
-It would successfully boot from the USB, and would bring me to the language selection window, as expected
    5) After selecting English, the window gives me the option to continue with the install, or access any utilities, and I would go to Disk Utility
    6) I selected the internal drive in Disk Utility (the whole drive, not the indented partition), and I went to the partition tab, partitioning the drive to have 1 partition, Mac OS Extended (Journaled), erasing the current partition
**Note: I have not tried this, but I feel like maybe If I were to first Erase the drive, opting to zero out all data (1 pass) in the security options, then partition the drive the same way as I did in step 6, perhaps the installation would go smoothly without returning any errors...thoughts?
    7) After step 6, I would return to the install os x window and begin installation of snow leopard.
-Every time I have done this, the install has returned an error about mid-way through, and I would be prompted to restart and try installing again
    8) Now having a non-booting computer, I would end up powering down, swapping out the snow leopard usb with my mountain lion usb, booting from that, partitioning the drive the same way as before, and reinstalling mountain lion
-This beings me back to square 1. A working, booting computer on Mountain Lion...
I believe that my issues surrounding the use of my install dvd (that came with the computer) are caused by a bad optical drive. When in mountain lion, if I insert the dvd, it will read it, but it will do so very slowly. For example, after inserting the dvd and the install os x window coming up, if I select optional installs or instructions, each of these folders would open, but take a very long time to display their contents. It also is a struggle to get the disc to eject in this situation.
So, if anyone has had a similar situation and came out on top, I would truly appreciate your help!
    Thanks guys,
    Nick

  • How Do I Downgrade From Windows Vista To XP On A 3000 N100 Series Notebook?

Hello. Here is the problem. I have Windows Vista Pre-loaded on my 3000 N100 Notebook, absolutely dislike this operating system and want to erase and load Windows XP. From reading other forum messages I have learned several things.
    1) The install disk On Windows XP Home & Professional will not recognize Sata Hard Drives, when it reaches the point of loading where it looks for the hard drive it "BOMBS OUT" with error messages.
    Several options are open .............
    1) Log into the BIOS, locate the SATA option, and change to compatibility mode.
    2) Have a USB external floppy connected with a Sata Driver on it and when installing Windows XP press the "F6" button when Windows asks for any external drivers you want to load.
Here is the problem with the 3000 N100 Notebook series..........
1)There is "NO SATA OPTION" in the BIOS of the 3000 N100 series notebooks to choose. In this model Lenovo stripped the BIOS down to the bare essentials.......and I Do Mean.... "BARE". The latest BIOS upgrade also has no Sata option. Why they did not offer at least this choice of downgrading to XP is beyond me. LENOVO..... I'm not impressed with your notebook.  As usual.... Microsoft has all vendors jumping to their tune..... Nothing but "VISTA" at this point in time. What if you hate it??????
    2) I have hunted all over the Lenovo Web Site for a "SATA DRIVER" that would work with a 3000 N100 Notebook, no such critter exists.  LENOVO..... Couldn't you have at least offered this????  I'M NOT IMPRESSED.
Has anyone been able to downgrade to Windows XP successfully on a 3000 N100 Series Notebook??? How Did You Do It?? Has Anyone Located A "SATA DRIVER" That Works???  IF So, Please Explain To Me Step-By-Step How I Can Get Rid of Vista and Load XP.
    Help........Help.......Help........Help......Help!!!!!!!!!!!
    Regards

Hello Himleung. Thank you for answering this message. Where did you find a "Sata Hard Drive Driver" that works?? Perhaps you could pass that along to this message forum in case someone else that has a 3000 N100 (may also work with the N200 series) Notebook wants to downgrade from Vista to Windows XP.
This is what baffles me to no end. The Lenovo web site has every driver you need to load Windows XP on the notebook.....**EXCEPT**..... the Sata HD Driver......**OR**...... the ability in BIOS to change to "compatability mode".  Duh!!!..... whats wrong with this story. I have never seen such a weak BIOS as the one in the 3000 N100. If I had known this I probably would have gone to another brand. They should have advertised this notebook as...... "Non-Geek Compatible".
Not knowing exactly how you could forward the driver to me I did the following....... I created a new Web email location that you could use to send the driver as an email attachment. The address is....... [email protected] This address will exist just long enough to obtain the driver..... and then......"Hasta-La-Vista" baby......end of story......as I do not want to be bombarded with ads, trash, or perhaps a virus of some sort..... although.....I'm SURE we have GREAT PEOPLE on this message center.
I'm not familiar with the "NLITE" program you mentioned. Again....perhaps you could mention where I can get it and what I need to do to set the program up to run the driver.
    Thanks again, Himleung.
    Regards,

  • Upgrade Safari 1.2 to 1.3.1 after downgrade from Tiger to Panther

I wished to restore performance to my G3 iBook by downgrading from Tiger to Panther, and have been successful with that and have restored all apps to Panther versions except for Safari. The downgrade (archive and install) left Safari 2.0 on my HD for some reason, which of course wouldn't launch under 10.3.9. I dragged Safari 2 to the trash, downloaded Safari 1.2 which installed fine. However when I try to upgrade now to 1.3.1, I am told by the installer that the software cannot be used with the disc volume (the system volume) I choose to install to.
(BTW, invoking Software Update says my software is all up to date, even though I'm only on Safari 1.2.)
I've seen the other threads which have suggested removing Safari pkg receipts from /library/receipts, but this hasn't helped me in this case; I can't find any thread that had a successful resolution yet. Anything else anyone can suggest? Many thanks.

    Welcome to Apple Discussions.
You can try using Pacifist to extract Safari from your install disk and install it. You may then be able to upgrade it more easily, although I can't promise that for sure.
Unless you are absolutely wedded to Safari, I find Camino to be at least as good (I think better) as Safari, and looks almost identical, so that there should not be much of a learning curve. I also use Firefox and especially like it for the measure of security it provides.
Please do not hesitate to post back with further questions or comments.
    Good luck.
