Such a wonderful equipment, why limit it?

The new ipad is here! Awsome upgrades and yet, if you are not within reach of wifi you can't use it the way it was meant to be used. Yes we have 2 options now. ATT and Verizon but both limit your use. NO UNLIMITED DATA available and even if you are lucky to have unlimited data with them some how they still limit you as soon as you pas the 5G mark. So slow that it is almost useless. These are multimillion or billion profit companies and still want to make more. What about if you want to have the option to have 4g or 3g available but don't want any services right away? will this new ipad work with either carrier or not? Sprint still offer unlimited data to customers, why aren't they part of the carriers available? 5G goes really fast (imagine 3G) if you like streaming videos or if you have a long trip ahead forget about watching streaming movies on the way; you will probably be able to use it 1 time and have to wait for the next month to use it again in 3 or 4g without getting any extra high charges.

Data caps are in place solely by choice of the carrier. The carrier's forums, if any, would therefore be the place to complain about their caps.
As to why the iPad isn't available on Sprint, only Apple and Sprint know, and neither have commented that I have seen.

Analog capture into DV format. Why such small files? Why the poor quality?

I am capturing 8mm video cassettes with an "ADVC 3000" converter, using an S-Video into the converter and then via FireWire into my PowerMac G5.
All is almost going well, but the files seem to take up so little space on my Hard Drive. That's a good thing, but I'm wondering if it's recording into Digital Video or not since the files seem so small. Smaller than normal for DV at least, or maybe I'm just paranoid.
In the scratch files, when I press Command-I for information, the Codecs on the QuickTime files are DV/DVCPRO-NTSC, Interger (Big Endian), Timecode.
So I'm guessing they are DV files even though they look like crap.
My question is this though. When I put these old analog tapes on iDVD, burn it, and put it in my DVD player, the quality of my video looks pretty crappy on my hi-def television. But when I watch them on my computer in a tiny window (the tinier the better), the video looks great. A large window, or my Television, gives a bad picture. My theory is that it's my hi-def television and computer monitor, and that on an old Analog TV set, the videos would look much sharper.
Should I play 8 mm analog video, converted to DV in Final Cut Pro, on an older Analog T.V. set for best viewing results?
Anyone have any comments to share on the science of this?

Forgive me if you did know this, the TBC is a Time Base Corrector. (I am pretty sure corrector is right). Anyway, the 8mm has time code striped on it with the image information. If the playback device is not able to read the time code, the picture quality suffers. (remember tracking adjustments?).
The TBC will intercept the time code coming from the tape and provide accurate, consistent time code to the system. I use one from DataVideo, and have been happy with it whenever I have to work with old tapes. If you have a lot of tapes to capture, you might look into one.
My two disclaimers: this is a very general explanation, I simply don't know the physics of what's going on, and secondly I am not a power user of FCS, but have gotten so much from this forum I am trying to give a little back. Take what I bring to the table with that in mind - I'm proficient, but not an expert.

Ram limit in macbook pro core duo

I was wondering what the limit of the macbook pro core duo is. I know it says 2 gb but has anyone tried a 2gb chip + 1gb chip? I also know the core2's can do 3gigs.
I have had laptops that thave worked with way more than the specs said. My pismo's limit according to apple was 512mb ram I have had 1GB in that for many years. I think the 512 mb chip was the larges one at the time the computer was released so thats what was reported. is it the same thing with the first generation macbook pro's?

According to Apple's specs the limit for the MBP CoreDuo is 2 GBs. The limit of the Core2Duo is 4 GBs although only 3 GBs is user accessible.
The spec limit for the Pismo is 1 GB (512 MB per slot.) When new models are released sometimes there isn't RAM available to suit the limit of the model, so Apple can only certify a max based on what's currently available. You will find this is true of many older Mac models such as the Pismo.

Later I tried starting the project as a Carbon dynamic library and it seems to work fine. Now granted, "if it ain't broke don't fix it", but I am curious and worried this will cause problems later.
One obviously relevant difference between the working Carbon and non-working C++ is the project_prefix.pch files:

Thanks for the suggestion. With Xcode though, the build and link parameters are determined automatically. I'm under the impression that it will separate out the .c's and .cpp's to compile with their own parameters. I am wondering now why the prefix.pch file, which is compiled with both -x c++-header and -x c-header, includes iostream. Anyway, I found if I just comment out that line in the prefix file, everything works fine. Even if I clean and re-build, the comment is not over-written and everything builds.
99% of the time using Xcode is more convenient than makefiles, but on these occasions when an automatically generated file causes problems, I get curious as to what happens behind the scenes when I build a project template like C++ Dynamic Library. I presume there is a way to change my code such that this won't happen, but if I knew why it happened it would help. Anyway, since this work-around is good enough, I should probably just be happy and move on.

Why a max of 50 snapshots with Hyper-V?

I realize the more snapshots Hyper-V has the more inefficient the machine gets - by the time you get to 50 it must be crawling. I was wondering, however, why is the limit 50? Is this an arbitrary number for the sake of efficiency, or is the limit due to
something else? I have no intentions of getting up to 50 snapshots, but I was wondering if there was a solid reason for this limit instead of "I guess it has to do with efficiency." I could not find any documentation that said why the limit was 50.

That's by design , maybe in order to avoid performance and resources problem .
Taking a snapshot reduces the performance of the virtual machine while the snapshot is created. You should not use these snapshots on virtual machines that provide services in a production environment.
We do not recommend using snapshots on virtual machines that are configured with fixed virtual hard disks because they reduce the performance benefits that are otherwise gained by using fixed virtual hard disks.
Snapshots require adequate storage space. Snapshots are stored as .avhd files in the same location at the virtual hard disk. Taking multiple snapshots can quickly consume a large amount of storage space.

My E-MU X-board49 controls Logic, why not my plug-ins?

I hope somebody can shed some light on this: Logic 9 is excellent with my X-board. I am able to program what I want and Logic learns it perfectly. What I'm wondering is, why don't my external plug-ins respond to my controller in the same manor as Logic? I mean, SOME Native Instruments plugs will attach when I click the "learn midi" button, but most do nothing. For example, I click "learn midi" on my Waves plugs and they don't respond at all. Is there some kind of menu within Logic where I can program my plug-ins to respond to the X-board, or are they just not compatible? Thanks!

Guess you can set up such things through the environement but that is really not my strong side.
Me, I use a novation controller with the AutoMap function. That works with Waves and most other plugins.
Do a search for Environement tutorials or wait for a better reply.

Log in as an Admin User on your PC. Type 'Services' in the search area above when you click on start. (or see control panel and select Admistrative Tools.)
Select the Services shortcut. In the window that appears with your listed service, navigate to ipod service, Apple Mobile Device service, and, Bonjour Services. Doubleclick them to get the property page. Change startup to automatic, click apply. Then click start,
There is a known issue that when iTunes updates it incorrectly sets the Service startup type - this is normally due to installations on Vista and win7 services and drivers that run in the Local Sstem requiring Admin account permissions that are not always granted with User Account Elevation, when running installations or updates in User account.
Normally the Local System is set to inherit the User account permission token when being set up - but Apple in their infinite wisdom have a higher token in place for their services. so a standard user cannot derogate the required elevation, even with the UAC to admin prompt, since the local system is owned by the Machine account and only Admin, bBackup, Restore, Machine, operator accounts carry the same descriptor permissions on process ownership to set these services correctly.
Third party security programs, such as Kaspersky can also limit installations by User account installations, which adds to the problem. I have had a few installations fail, even in Admin mode - because Kaspersky sits on par with the Main Machine Administrator account for watching program and installation directories and registry keys - (which have higher privilege levels in some respects than the ordinary Admin account you normally start a new machine in before you add any other user accounts- all very confusing - but that's Microsoft all over for you.
Follow Ralph's advice if you do not have the necessary software already installed. You should install Apple's Application Management Software - which will look after the installation of all required elements for you and notify you of updates pending. In options have it set to Notify only - not all updates may be requred, and this option allows you to see what is being installed. It is good practice to set all updating software to Notify only - especially any thirdparty software - much of which carry all sorts of little 'extra's' you may not need or want.
It is also good practice to keep an eye on your Program and Features option in control panel, just to see what is being installed and when - including Windows updates.
Sorry about the long reply, but with December being your last sync - a lot can change in the meantime. Best be prepared.

You know what, I was just about to call tomorrow to order Verizon's triple package deal with Direct TV, high speed internet and unlimited phone. AND THANK GOD I CHECKED BBB AND OTHER REVIEWS ONLINE FIRST!!!! Holy crap...Direct TV has an F from the Better Business Bureau...$1.3 Million in civil penalties...TONS of aweful horror stories on all the consumer websites online...wow. Not to mention endless complaints about connection issues. DIRECT TV ARE {please keep your posts courteous}, and there are MANY reports of how Verizon just plays along with their game by not informing customers that, although Verizon has a 30-day money-back guarantee on their services, DIRECT TV ONLY HAS A 3-DAY according to their silent hidden secret "contract" which we apparently never see, hear about or get to sign! Which translates to close to a $500 EARLY CANCELLATION FEE.
Verizon apparently never tells anyone about this and has their reps play dumb about it ({please keep your posts courteous}) when it's brought up to them by these angry customers who were flat-out LIED to...and they just keep telling people to talk to the folks at DTV about it (as if Verizon has no responsibility in the matter). Story after story of people being had and Verizon acting like they can't do anything about it.
This scares me. I currently have VZW service and I suddenly have a whole lot less confindence in you. I mean, why in the hell are you guys partnered with a SCAM operation??? You think contracting out cable service with them and then shifting the blame to them if (or should I say...WHEN) the customer is screwed over doesn't make you look bad?? **bleep**.
And for my last question: CAN I GET IN WRITING THAT VERIZON/DTV WILL NOT SCREW ME OVER LIKE THIS?
Because if not, then I think it's time for me to start looking into a different wireless co. I think anyone reading this needs to think twice before getting involved with a company who partners with (and stays partnered even after things like this have gone on for YEARS) a horrible company like Direct TV. Sorry but I had Directv and NEVER bundled it with Verizon. Perhaps that is the difference. I saw no advantage. Even with both situations you would still need to pay for all the extra costs such as STB equipment, taxes and fees.

Internet $55
Add it up and it is well over $200. No bundle.
Now FiOS $109 bundle plus STBs taxes and Fees. $147. Sorry the DTV stuff has been such a pain for you. I started with FiOS double play for under $100 for the faster internet speed, and had DTV for a couple years after.
More than one Vendor there is always finger pointing. I would say perhaps they are both a fault. So I kept it seperate just to let you know where I was coming from.

Business Customer - How can I limit data for employees / users?

I am a small business customer and I would like to put a data cap on our company cell phones. Each has an iphone 6 which doesn't have great apps to auto limit data and such after reaching a certain limit. I know Verizon has some services that can do this for the personal accounts but I don't understand why this is not available to the business customers. Sure, I can have them pay for their overages but I would rather just give them a set amount to use and have it stop at that point. Wifi would always be available.

How many emails are we talking about per day? If these are just text emails they should not be taking much more space than just downloading the header would take. Are they a few paragraphs or several pages long?
If they contain attachments, such as pictures, they will take much more room but it should limit how much is loaded and give you an option for downloading the rest of that email.
I asked my neighbor how many emails she gets per day and she said about 20 - 25 and she stays well within her 200Mb.
If you are getting more than this then you really can't afford a smartphone and if you are within your return period you should immediately do so. And I did read your thread.
I'm not sure what purpose there would be to getting headers only. If that is the case get people to text you instead.

Why Are Multiple Shell Instances Necessary?

I usually run 10--12 terminals at any given time, and this doesn't take up to much memory since I can use the rxvt-unicode daemon urxvtd.
Yet each terminal has its own instance of bash, and this does take up memory.
What I wonder is whether it is really necessary for each terminal to have its own shell instance.
Obviously this is a necessity for independent history, but I really don't care too much about that.
Is there a way to run a bashd and have the individual shells hook into it? Is it even possible, or is there some consideration I have failed to make?
Maybe my workflow is flawed, I don't know.
My OCD nature prevents me from opening and closing terminals as whim, as there is a predetermined place for everything to go.
I always have the same terminals for their same respective things open on each workspace.
Some of them really don't need a complete shell though... for instance I have one to update svn and read commit logs, one for irc, and another for file transfer on my net workspace.
None of these need bash's features... I know I don't need bash underneath irssi but I do need some sort of command prompt to run my svn scripts and transfer programs.
In fact it seems most of my shells are more like command launchers, though I do want to see the output and be able to scroll back. Perhaps another shell would be better for me.
Only in a couple of my terminals do I actually use globbing and piping and such --- this is where bash is a necessity.
Of course if there was a way to hook the shells into one instance, I wouldn't feel so guilty about having so many open for so little purpose.
Also, I still don't know how to use a single terminal multiplexer, so obviously I will look into screen or tmux.
Any recommendations or insight would be greatly appreciated.
EDIT: I now know that it isn't possible to have a shell daemon, and I realize that my concern over memory usage is considered unfounded. Now I would like to know why no such program is available / why it's impossible. This is for my education.

I know where stdout goes and how to redirect it --- I just wondered if that was a possible consideration as to WHY it is necessary for multiple, complete shell instances.

Another consideration I realize is that blocking processes (not backgrounded or immediately returning) would preclude the clients from communicating with out the shell forking?
