Sudden audio white noise

For a couple of months I get sudden audio noise when using my ultralite firewire audio device - very sporadically but still annoyingly regularly. It typically starts with a slight pop or crackle and then turns into proper noise on all the channels of the audio device. Restart of the ultralite will fix it or sometimes only a restart of the iMAC.
It is also interesting that the issue persists once it has happens. Any audio sent to the ultrlite (by logic or safari, etc) is then converted into noise.
Noticed it first in Logic but also in Safari when watching  BBC iplayer.
I am thinking....
- the firewire device is daisy chained to a firewire drive, and maybe this causes some signal routing issue?
- driver issue, as I have not had this before the upgrade to lion. the ultrlite driver has been upgraded but that has not fixed the issue?
- some feedback through the mains which triggers a fault in the firewire signal....?
Anyone has a similar problem?

Ok, good info. We seem to have the exact same hardware combination: iMac, Mac OS X Lion and the first version of the MOTU UltraLite.
I'm not using Logic at all. I'm experiencing the issue in all applications, Ableton Live, iTunes, VLC player, QuickTime Player, the browser etc.
Have you experienced the issue in other applications than Logic? If not, can you do a test, for instance play music through iTunes for an hour or two and see if the issue shows up? What is your frequency of the issue?
I'm almost sure this is a software issue - either a MOTU driver issue og a Mac OS X Lion issue. I have done a lot of troubleshooting including:
1. Tried several firewire cables (To exlude that it's not a bad cable) - no luck
2. Connecting only one firewire unit - the UltraLite (To exclude that other firewire units are causing the issue) - no luck
3. Tried the UltraLite on my Mac OS Tiger machine - no issue, I cannot reproduce the issue on this machine
4. Tried to only run one application after a fresh restart: iTunes (to exclude that some third party application is causing the issue) - no luck
5. It worked fine on my iMac running Snow Leopard before upgrading to Lion
6. We are two persons with the same hardware combination experiencing the exact same issue (Kinda proves that its not a broken sound interface)
7. Downgraded to an earlier MOTU driver than the newest so-called "Lion compatible" driver - no luck
8. The issue is only when the UltraLite is connected. There is no issue when running the native sound output or another USB sound interface (I have tried a Guitar rig session I/O on my iMac)
9. The issue stops if I restart the sound interface or restarts Lion or switch the sample rate in the MOTU Audio Setup
Unfortunately I have not another Lion Machine to test on (to exclude that it's some hidden applications running in the background causing the issue). Do you have other Lion machines to test on?
If you have the time you can try to do the same troubleshooting as me. If you conclude the same as me I think we have a good bug report to Apple/MOTU that they hopefully will take care of.

  • Why is the video audio white noise when I share my project since I updated to 10.0.9

On the movies I created before I updated to 10.0.9, the audio prortion of the video is now white noise. The audio is fine when played back in FCP, but when i share the project it is white noise. When I burn it to BluRay the audio is gone all together. Even when I make a master file to my desktop, it still happens. The music I added to my project is fine. It just the audio that is part of the video clips that is affected. I've turned off the EQ's and Compressors I was using and I even tried moving the audio to the center channel instead of mono. No luck. Need some help. I can't figure this out.

I'm encountering the same problem as the original poster.  In my case, I'm using FCP 10.1 (running on OS 10.9.1).  My source file is DV video imported via FireWire from a DV camcorder.  The clip's audio is fine when playing inside of Final Cut Pro 10.1, but when I share the project the audio track is just white noise.  My share settings are to Apple 720p devices (the subseqent dialog boxes indicate the software has figured out it's really 640x480 video).
Here's what the QuickTime Inspector says about the source file:
    Format:
    DV/DVCPRO - NTSC, 720 x 480 (640 x 480)
Linear PCM, 16-bit little-endian signed integer, 48004.6 Hz, Mono
Linear PCM, 16-bit little-endian signed integer, 48004.6 Hz, Mono
    FPS:  29.97
    Data Size:  5.87 GB
    Data Rate:  30.30 Mbit/s
    Current Size:  640-480 (actual)
I tried changing from "faster encode" to "better quality", but it made no difference.
The rather dated version of Compressor I have (v3.5.3) was able to encode the clip to H.264 640x480 and the results are fine.  However, it took way longer than FCP 10.1 (I think it's too old to be taking advantage of the GPU).

  • 890GXM-G65 on-board Audio white noise when shutting down ... Please Help

Just got this board on ebay. Runs great but when rebooting the following happens:
MSI 890GXM-G65 on-board Audio produces a second's worth of white noise (radio no-station-tuned static sound) when shutting down - about a second before the screen goes bank and the PC restarts
I don't mind the noise but is this normal or should I send the board back ?

I'm using the following hardware :
    Athlon II x 3 440 AM3 (unlocked 4 cores @ 3.6GHz)
    Thermaltake MaxOrb
    MSI 890GXM-G65
    2 x 2GB Kingston 1066 CAS 7 DDR3 KVR1066D3N7K2/4G
    MSI N460GTX Cyclone 1GD5/OC
OCZ Fatal1ty 550W Modular (Dual Rails +12V@25A per rail)
    WD 250GB 7200rpm SATA II
    Thermaltake Gaming Cube VF6000BNS
    Windows 7 x64 Home Premium
    19" Sony Triniton CRT Monitor
All Windows Sounds are turned off except for Device Connect / Disconnect / Connect Failure. I have an Audigy 2 PCI card but I haven't tried it because the drivers always lock up the PC when I run MSI Afterbutner, eVGA Precision or almost any other hardware monitoring utility.
Since I flashed the BIOS to v1.B I feel I can't return it to the seller but I really like the board and it works well, except for this integrated audio issue. I won't return this board - it's a keeper.
Still, I'm hoping for a fix if possible.

  • Audio / White Noise

I'm curious as to how to arrange audio in such a way that it sounds uniform; that is to say, there isn't an obvious audio "click" or gap or what-not when switching between shots within scenes. Any suggestions? I'm purchasing FCE soon.

Without seeing (and hearing) the exact clips you are dealing with it is hard to advise.
Usually there is no click etc. between shots - just an instant change of audio which sometimes goes unnoticed but on other occasions may jar.
You can always adjust the volume or add audio dissolves if you wish to soften any abrupt sound changes.
You have almost infinite control over the volume and also have a batch of filters to doctor the audio in FCE.
You can also totally remove the soundtrack and add a different one. You can have as many audio tracks as you wish and blend and balance them together individually.
One technique is to prepare a track with suitable ambient sound and put it across all your different scenes so there is no break in the audio.
The possibilities are almost limitless - as I suggested in the other post, FCE will keep you busy for a long time to come.

  • Getting random white noise in Premier Pro CS3 audio

I'm working with Premier Pro CS3 on a simple 15 minute slide show with approx. 150 pictures and 3 songs in WAV format. In each of the three songs, I'm getting 1-second bursts of white noise - on left or right or both channels - approx. 3-4 times in each song.  When played outside of Premier Pro, all songs are clean with no white noise.  None of the songs are too 'hot'; show three have good levels in Soundbooth. I've scanned all of the audio sections in Help and can find nothing that might explain the cause and I'd appreciate some guidance.  I've worked with previous versions of Premier Pro for years and have never run into this.  Thanks.

Have you updated your Creative driver? That would be one of the first things that I would do.
Next, in Soundbooth, do you see the noise in the Waveform? In PrPro, when you zoom in both vertically and horizontally on the Audio Track, do you see it in the Waveform?
Some folk have had great luck using ASIO4ALL as their ASIO driver. It has cleared up many issues with a broad range of equipment. I do not recall your exact problem, but then I might have missed that one. Note: after you download and install ASIO4ALL, you'll need to go to Audio Hardware and set it as your Input and Output. This driver has been very helpful on the Audition forum, and with all sorts of issues and some very esoteric hardware.
Hope that something helps, and good luck,
    Hunt

  • Media Encoder turns audio into white noise!

I'm running CS5.5 on an intel Mac 10.6.5, and i have been having problems encoding to flv.
All my videos are edited the same way, and using the same formats etc,   yet recently I have found that when converting to .flv, some will work fine, and others will have the audio replaced by white noise.
I cannot figure out what the problem could be. I have also tried using the CS5 version and that is having the same issues.
Checking through the video specs, it appears that the one difference is that the ones which worked fine are all Apple ProRes 422 HQ files, and the ones which failed are Apple 10bit Uncompressed.  The strange thing is the audio is the same for both.  Yet when the encode problem happens, the video for both is fine, its just the audio where the problem appears.
Anyone else seen this problem?  or better still have a solution?
    adam

    I've answered it myself.
The problem relates to using Uncompressed 10bit movie files...seems the CS5 versions have a problem handling the audio on these. The solution for me was to run the files through Compressor first and change them to Apple ProRes422, before running them through AME.
    works every time now!
now if only i could find the bug report form....

  • Media Encoder CS5.5  Audio being converted into white noise

I have recently started getting an intermittent problem where some video files are being encoded to FLV with the picture looking fine, but the sound coming out as white noise.
The file used for the encoding looks and sound fine in every other app i have. I have been using the same preset within ME to create all the files for our website, for years!.It should be stereo 96kbps MPEG 3  but all i get is static.
The source videos are all edited , mixed and output the same way too.
The files being sent to Encoder are on Mac 10.6.5, and were created in Final Cut Pro using the Prores422 codec, with audio as Linear PCM 16bit/48khz
I have just rebooted the mac, installed the latest CS5.5 upgrades, repaired permissions, but still the problem persists.
    Can anyone suggest a solution?

seems i did answer this myself last year!
i need to re-ecode the source material in a format other than 10bit uncompressed for Encoder to be happy with it. I thought the file was already Prores - must be an older file thats causing the trouble.

  • QT Pro 7.03 - audio recording - I just get white noise!

Just recorded an audio clip (off the radio) and what do i get??
Just plain white noise - completely useless!!!
I could monitor what I was recording as I was recording it and it sounded fine!
    What's going on!???
(connection: Output of DAB into small mixer, into Audiophile 2496 soundcard - QT set to record quality "better" - hah! )

Use the Audio MIDI Setup application (Utilities folder).
If your recording setup is correct it should be identified with the app. Adjust the settings and test.
If you can hear it through your headphones or speakers you can also use WireTap Pro (free version) to record in .aiff format.

  • Dynadock - USB Audio kaput busted broken (white noise)

not sure what has caused this, but I use a Dynadock and up until Monday the USB audio was fine, then it started making crackling white noise. I thought was temporary as was off to work but on return today is doing the same. A bit of google leads me to think this is not uncommon.
I have reinstalled Dynadock software (latest version from Toshiba site)
I have reinstalled Conexant sound drivers (latest version from Toshiba site - though don't think this is latest according to Vista update - did I mention Vista? ;) and working fine
After much searching as it does not seem to be available from the Toshiba site I found a C Media 106 Driver (which is what it was before) and installed that, and the white noise is still there.
I assume this is a Vista / Driver issue?
Which also assumes means there is no way round it without either system restore back to a previous point and hope it goes away, then select each update
or wait for a new driver but with no idea who owns it or when that might be?
Is there any alternative? I use the docking station almost permanently so this is a real pain in the rear.
Not a happy bunny! Can anyone help please? Is anyone having the same problem?
    Thanks in advance.
    t

    Hello Tim
Your posting is pretty confusing and I can not understand what you have done and wrote about all those sound drivers. In my opinion you should make clean Dynadock installation and configuration.
Disconnect the Dynadock from the system and remove all preinstalled stuff. Download Vista Dynadock Utility 2.3c properly. Follow the menu on the screen and please do not interrupt Utility installation.
Dynadock Utility will install all stuff you need and I hope you will be able to use this nice external device again. Of course I hope the sound will be OK again.

  • Heavy white noise/hiss while recording guitar through audio interface

I have just purchased a new MacBook pro 2011 (low end 15") and have tried recording with an m-audio fast track audio interface. Unfortunately I'm getting terrible white noise and hiss while recording my guitar. The guitar is plugged straight into the interface using a guitar lead which is then usb connected to my mac.
I am pretty sure it's not the interface because it's brand new. Also I have tried three different guitars and all have the same out come.
    Please help
Things that may help diagnose the problem:
I have installed a new driver.
When the gain and presence is increased the noise is worse.
The output is not hitting the red mark.
    Thanks
    Andre

I had your problem and I resolved it! i have my mic and guitars plugged into my Eurorack UB1202 analog mixer which outputs to my MacBook Pro via Bheringer UCA222 audio interface then back to my mixer and to my headphones/speakers. i noticed a white noise last night while i was working and all I did to fix it was unplug the audio interface from the outside usb hub (closest to the screen) and plugged it into my middle hub. the noise has now stopped and its crystal clear.
TL;DR try plugging your audio interface into different usb hubs. it worked for me. hope that helps!

  • Audio files turned into white noise

I just opened a couple of session I kept on my firewire audio drive and for some reason some of the audio files have been turned into white noise and obviously rendered unusable. Has this ever happened to anyone? If so can you do anything to sort it out?
Some of those where really important so I would really appreciate if someone had a solution.
    Thanks

  • Bluetooth Audio Blasts White Noise

I have a Macbook Pro and when I listen to music via bluetooth (headphones, speakers, etc.) it eventually glitches and then blasts white noise. Anyone know what the problem is?
By the way, I don't experience this problem when using the same bluetooth devices with my iPhone.

the problem is that 10.10.2 is a piece of junk. look through the discussions, and there are already a number of them mentioning this. in all the posts i've read, this started with that update. amazing that apple can cause a problem that can both damage hearing and equipment, and after a month still nothing. i've had it happen about 5 times today. add to that, my bluetooth keyboard has disconnected and reconnected 30 times, often consecutively.
the only fix is disconnect the device, and reconnect. or, if you just mute audio and wait a number of minutes it is usually gone after un-muting. 10.10.2 is a failure. fingers crossed 10.10.3 fixes it. hope my speakers don't blowout in the meantime.

  • SBH50 issue with streaming audio (sec white noise)

After some test, with 2 device, and after having resetted the SBH50 as suggested in another thread related to stutter audio, i realize that the issue comes when "multipoint" in sbh50 is activated.
    i did some exercise:
    - no multipoint activated (only one device: sgs3) music streaming from sgs to sbh works perfectly.
    - multipoint acivated
second device not connected: as soon as multipoint is activated sbh starts being disturbed by "white noise" for 1 second and it happens really often, more times during a single song
second device connected: same situation as point 1
i solved not using multipoint.. that is not the right solution
hope for a solution, i got still 20 days before time limit for give it back with no fee, and i wonder to understand if i should buy a BT clip that cost less considering at this point the added values is the little scrren (nice) and nfc (nice but.. after the first pairing i do not need it anymore)
    thank you for your support

does this silence in suppport means that there is no solution ?

  • Extracted audio from video file is white noise

Hi, I'm working on an animated series as a sound designer (my first gig as such). I'm getting .mov files from the director with some audio already added. In some cases, he just wants me to add tracks to what's already there and export it containing my audio and his.
The video looks OK (though the playback is pretty choppy, but that might be system limitations) but the extracted audio that shows up on the separate audio track is very loud white noise. There appears to be breaks where there's silence on the track but the audio is completely fuzzed-out and unintelligible.
The only thing I can think of is I'm using XP, he's on OS X. However, we both have current versions of QuickTime so why would it matter.
Any advice or insight would be appreciated. Thanks!

    Hi grilch,
I'd definitely need to know the format of the audio stream. If you play the MOV file directly in Quicktime, does the audio play properly?
    Thanks,
    Durin

  • Audio outputs white noise /static sound

I recently purchased HP Envy 700-327C.
Out of the box, I noticed a constant static / white noise whenever I plug a headphone into the audio out jack from the headphone.  It is the same noise from the front or rear jack.  It is very noticeable when no sound is playing.  I have tried multiple headphones and speakers with the same problem.  When I mute the sound, the noise stops.  If I increase the volume, the noise level doesn't change.  I have disabled the mic and also reinstalled the driver. I even tried to use the generic windows sound driver.  I have an older HP desktop at home before and an HP at work and never had this issue.   Is there anything else I can do?

    Hello hppoweruser2014,
Welcome to the HP Forums, I hope you enjoy your experience! To help you get the most out of the HP Forums I would like to direct your attention to the HP Forums Guide First Time Here? Learn How to Post and More.
I understand that your desktop is producing a static noise from the headphone jack on your desktop, and I would be happy to assist you! To begin, I will need to ask you a few questions:
What is the Product and Model Number of your desktop computer?
What version of Windows do you have installed on your computer?
Has your computer completed all of its important Windows Updates?
Is there static emitted when there is sound being produced?
Have you updated your HP drivers using the HP Support Assistant?
Does this same issue occur with the audio jack in the back of your desktop (the jack in between the top and bottom)?
If you boot your computer in Safe Mode, is there still a static sound produced in the front of the computer?
In the meantime, I recommend following this document on No Sound from the Speakers or Headphones (Windows 7). This should help correct the static being emitted from the front headphone jack.
Please re-post with the results of your troubleshooting, as well as the requested information above. I look forward to your reply!
