Sudden battery depletion and fan working overtime

Overnight, my battery, which was in good shape, stopped holding as much energy, it depletes within an hour and a warning is displayed "Service Battery". Also, I only browse the internet and my fan, which is otherwise very silent and functions sparsely, is now working overtime. I have had my macbook pro since December 2008. I do not think the batter is in bad shape, until last week it lasted for about 4 hours.  It might be associated with a recent update? I am not sure, I am wondering how can I solve this issue. Thank you

I would suggest trying to run an Apple hardware test using the disc supplied with your MBP

  • Battery discharging and fan running constantly after upgrading to Yosemite

MBP Early 2011. Just got back a month ago from Apple Support for video related issue. Almost EVERYTHING was replaced (logic board, video, ram, battery, cdrom, even my dented case. Thank you Apple!). Has run for a month flawlessly on Mavericks. Upgraded to Yosemite 48 hours ago. Light on magsafe stays green. Battery indicator icon states Battery is not charging (currently at 75% and falling). Power source: Power adapter. While plugged in and operating, battery is discharging and fan constantly running. If I shut down, mag safe light turns yellow and battery will charge to 100%. If left plugged in and running in Yosemite, battery will drain all the way down.
    Have tried:
Rebooting, putting into sleep mode, shutting down completely, unplugging and replugging power supply from wall and MBP while on and off, resetting SMC with Shift Control Option Power keys/buttons.
No third party battery or power apps installed, fresh load of Mavericks from factory when I got it back. This feels like something with the new energy management in Yosemite isn't working as expected to me. Thoughts & suggestions appreciated!

    UPDATE: Resolved!
Disabled all login items but problem persisted on normal boot. Resetting SMC and PRAM had no effect. After booting into Safe Boot, problem did not exist. Looked in console logs and saw this right as problem started to occur:
10/20/14 6:49:07.004 PM com.apple.xpc.launchd[1]: (com.gspy.MO3V2Daemon[93967]) Could not find and/or execute program specified by service: 2: No such file or directory: /Library/MO3V2/MO3V2Daemon.app/Contents/MacOS/MO3V2Daemon
This pertains to the Steelseries WoW MMO gaming mouse. Ran the uninstall.command from Applications for this mouse software and rebooted. Fixed.
Light on MagSafe connector is orange, battery shows as charging, fan is not running constantly. I can't begin to understand how this would effect the battery charging functions but, after uninstalling this, the problem was resolved. Hope this will help someone else.

  • Satellite A505-S6973 overheating and fan works often

I hate doing this but I seem to have encountered another problem which i have been searching and reading with the hopes of correcting myself. I presently own a Satellite series laptop with an Intel Cor 2 Duo T6500 2.1Ghz processor.
I 've been monitoring my system for performance issues andi've noticed that for sometime (unsure when) the temperature on my system has risen significantly. I'm seeing from my PC Health Monitor that my processors temperature is running at 59% and fan speed is at 78% yet when I place my hand near the cooling fins at the side of my laptop I can barely feel any breeze but a co-worker of mine has a vostro and the fan feels like it's running on NOs.
If there is anything that can be done I'd greatly appreciate this, i'm afraid of loosing my system due to something simple that cause overheating.
N.B. I noticed that at one time different users posted threads stating that after updating there BIOS they experienced overheating problems. If this is the cause of anywhere near it please help.

Are you sure that your notebook is overheating?
In my opinion you cant compare this with other notebook models because every notebook has its own cooling modules and fans and there are not standard parts as on desktop computers. Furthermore its also important which form factor your notebook has. Larger and bigger notebooks have a better cooling assembly as smaller ones.
Anyway, in my opinion you could try cleaning your notebook using compressed air spray. This should always be done from time to time to blow out the dust from the cooling ventilators. Therefore its not necessary to disassemble the notebook.

Keep on charger and Reset, hold both home and power buttons for about 20 seconds until the iPhone begins to respond. If nothing, first thing to consider is faulty battery.

  • Fan working overtime and jerky video

Around four days ago my MBP started getting really hot for no particular reason, I rebooted and all was well until I went on YouTube. Since then almost every time I watch a YouTube video in full screen, the video playback is jerky and the cooling fan kicks into overdrive. When I check activity monitor there aren't any processes using that much CPU power.
When the video goes jerky, the rest of the machine does too, until I close the video (or force quit the Flash plugin container). I have tried this on Firefox, Chrome and Safari, all yield the same results. I've re-installed Mountain Lion and Flash player (various versions, all the same result).
I then thought the issue might be hardware related, so I tried a different hard drive, different memory, cleaned out the fan and reset the SMC and PRAM more times than I can remember. Nothing is helping.
This is really bugging me, as it was working fine a few days ago, now I can't browse the Internet or make a Skype call (voice only) without the constant noise of the fan.

  • 2 problems, iPod nano battery depleted and not recognized by Windows, help!

Earlier this morning. At first when I connected the usb to the computer I got the screen in the nano that said "apple.com/ipod/support" or something like that, with the folder/exclamation mark icon. It was charging but I disconnected it cause I had to go. I tried to do the same at night but this time is when it's totally dead, and not recognized at all. What can I do now?
I havent used the nano in a while and the battery is depleted, so I tried to charge it but neither windows or itunes or the updater/restore recognize it.
I'm on a laptop, I already tried most of the stuff in the faqs but it wont work.

i kind of have the same porblem, my klaptop does regcognize the ipod on "my computer" but the iPod dosen't shows up in iTunes, and i have tried almost everything in the faq that show how to fix the problem, but it still dosen't work....

  • Mac Book Pro heating up and fans working continuously

    Hi,
This is my second Mac Book Pro, the first one "died" because of heating issues and only after an overhaul from the Mac Store, it worked again, but never the same, so I went to the Mac Store to get another one.
I purchased this one on March 2009 and three days ago it started heating up and using the fans constantly, consuming my battery very fast and making the annoying noise these little fans make. Not to mention the heat above the function keys is way beyond normal (normal: not burning your fingers when touching it for a couple of seconds).
Having had a bad heating experience with a previous Mac, I am freaking out now. Any advice on what should I look at before going to a Mac Store?
I don't use any games or very sophisticated software, basically Office, Firefox and iTunes with movies and everything included.
Here are some of my Mac's specs.
    Model Name: MacBook Pro
    Model Identifier: MacBookPro5,1
Processor Name: Intel Core 2 Duo
    Processor Speed: 2.66 GHz
    Number Of Processors: 1
    Total Number Of Cores: 2
    L2 Cache: 6 MB
    Memory: 4 GB
    Bus Speed: 1.07 GHz
    Thank you very much indeed,
    Roberto

Well it looks like there's a printer driver that is monopolizing your CPU. Do you have a Lexmark printer that you use? If so, here's a few things to try:
Download the latest print drivers for Lexmark and install them:
    http://support.apple.com/kb/DL901
Open Print & Fax in System Preferences and delete your Lexmark printer. Then hit the "+" symbol and add the printer back. That will let it install the new drivers.
If that doesn't work, check out the response by "Pitch64" near the bottom of this thread:

  • Equium A110-233 stops using the WLan and fans work only 3 sec

I purchased an A110-233 20-09-06. It works fine for about 1 hour then it stops communicating via the wireless network, the connection status states it is still connected, sometimes but not always the Intel Pro config window states that the wireless is switched off and I should switch it on at the bottom of the window ( It is switched ON ).
I took it back to PC World expecting a replacement but I had to sit for an hour trying to replicate the fault, we could not get it to go wrong but I have since found out that it only does it when running on the mains.
The cooling fan only runs for 1 - 3 seconds at a time, is there any way to increase this time.
    Any help would be appreciated
    Bob

    Hi
If you want to change the cooling module properties you have to do it in the Power saver settings.
You should know that the power saver uses different power modes. The notebook uses a different power mode if the AC adaptor was connected and another power mode if the notebook runs only with the battery.
In the Basic setup of the power saver you will be able to change the cooling method. This option controls the fan operating.
It is not easy to solve the WLAN communication issue. I mean there is no general solution. Additional its not easy to solve it because the issue doesnt occur always but only sometimes. Possibly the signal strength is sometimes lower and therefore the Intel WLan configuration software reports that the WLan is switched off.
Furthermore you should also check the Wlan card properties. You will find the properties in the device manager -> right click on the WLan card.
There you should select the Advanced tab.
You should find some interesting options like power saving (disable it) or signal strength (enable it).
Furthermore you could try to update the WLan driver. Possibly a new version is available.
By the way: You should also know that some 3rd party application could has a bad influence on the WLan communication.

  • VMware Fusion suddenly hogging resources and fan running constantly

I have had my MacBook for about a year now and until 2 weeks ago had no problems with this issue before. Now suddenly, if I launch VMware Fusion (even not running any programs) the MacBook fan comes on and stays on. When I launch the Mac "Activity Monitor' App, sure enough VMware is hogging all the resources. I have added nothing to the XP side of things during this time. Any ideas on what might be happening as the constant fan 'on' issue is a pain and it FEELS like it's a drag on regular Mac performance. Thanks.

Is it possible that your Anti-Virus software (Not sure if you installed one) is performing a scheduled virus scan at bootup? Until that is finished, it will continue to attempt to start/finish the scan at boot up.
    Just a thought.

  • Sudden HD, CD and FAN isues with late 2007 24" iMac

When I play audio cd's with iTunes, the sound sometimes stutters. At least once during each song! I just zapped the PRAM and updated to the latest iTunes version but it makes no difference. Since I installed XP in Bootcamp and updated to 10.5.3 and installed SMCfancontrol, I have lots of audio glitches in Ableton Live and Logic Pro 8 and occasional slow disk behavior. Also, one or all of my fans are spinning faster than before. They spin fast from the moment I switch on the iMac (the audio just stuttered again) and they cool down the HD Bay 1 to around 51 degrees celcius, coming from around 60. Is there any OSX/Apple guru who can help me out with this weird behavior?
    thx

+You should un-install SMCFC and reset the SMC immediately afterwards.+
-> This is what I did! But nothing. Same fan noise. I also cleared plists of smcfancontrol, brightness control and Shades, right before I once again cleared the SMC.
According to iStat pro my temps are cooler but my fans are spinning at their default speeds. The HD Bay 1 is about 8 degrees celcius cooler. The fans are making noise from the moment I switch on the iMac.
yesterday, I erased all the free disk space. I did a repair disk permission from the boot up disc. I zapped the PRAM and the MB battery. But nothing.... Same story..... The fan(s) goes on from the moment I switch on the iMac. and Ableton Live loads up in 30 seconds!! Coming from just 3 seconds.
My iMac feels and sounds like a cheap PC computer.
Oh yes, my mouse broke down too. It now clicks when it's just laying there, doing nothing. Way to go, Apple!
Oh and Ive tried other mice. The Mighty Mouse is not causing the problems Im having with the imac. But it does illustrate how solid the Apple products really are. NOT solid.

  • IMac 27 inch..i7 incredibly hot..fans working overtime

My imac 27inch 2.93 i7 is running so hot, the fans are running overtime. It is just too hot to touch at the top. I am concerned the house will catch fire. The only open apps are Safari, and emptying a huge amount of trash 38k items from itunes.
    Any recommendations?

Hi - These iMac's do feel hot to the touch, but the fans should'nt be kicking off as you describe.
As a first step your could try resetting both the SMC:

    and the PRAM:

So my iPhone 4S started draining battery after recent update, battery got changed and it worked perfect for 3 days, all of a sudden the phone  shut down and now won't stay on unless connected to mains... Claims its at 100% battery but thats impossible as it was at 30% before it shut down randomly.
Cannot receive any signal "searching" constantly.
Turns off as soon as removed from usb ... wont stay on connected to laptop!
    HELP!

The iPhone includes a one year warranty. If an Apple store is not nearby, you can call AppleCare and handle an exchange under warranty over the phone. The exchange will be shipped to your door - someone must sign for the delivery so if no one will be at home, have it delivered where you work. You use the same box to return the existing iPhone back to Apple. Return shipping label and tape to reveal the box incuded - call the carrier with number incuded when the box is ready to be picked up. AppleCare will request a credit card in the event the existing iPhone is not returned within 10 days after the exchange under warranty is received.
Hardware can fail - it happens, which is why there is a one year warranty.

  • Macbook pro is not getting turn on and further when i press power button the green orange light suddenly changes to green again, moreover battery meter is not working

    Hi
Last night my macbook pro gets off automatically when battery gets empty and in the morning it isn't turning on. When i connect the charger, the light on the charger turns green to orange (showing that it is charging) but when i press the power button it suddenly changes to green again. I thought there must not be any connection between the charger light and the power button. And battery meter was running fine.
When it tried this again and again the charger light disappear and battery meter also stops working, when i clearly observe it there is a very dim green light in the charger (not observable in the light) and the laptop is still not showing any change.
    please help!
