Sudden black screen (not kernal panic)...

Hi,
I feel like I may be posting too many issues over the past day, but this one's the most serious for me and this forum, I think, is the right one (someone steer me elsewhere if you think otherwise).
I got my computer back two days ago after sending it in for both a faulty speaker and the dreaded whine. Here;s what they replaced (btw way, both the whine and speaker were fixed):
SVC, MLB 2.0GHZ, 256VRAM(M1-CAP)MBP15"
ASSY, INVERTER, NCC, MBPRO15"
PCBA, LIO/AUDIO (M1) MBPRO15"
FLEX ASSY, LIO/AUDIO, M1
SPKR ASSY, PURCH, M1
So, earlier today I went to print something out, fine, but for some reason the CPU continued to register something still in the process of printing. I had no idea this was the case, really, except that the computer sounded like it was roaring loud and when I checked the cpu info it showed the printer still cranking the cpu (between 55 and 95%), although the printer was not attached to the computer (I'd succesfully printed what I wanted to print).
So, I went into the printer utility, noticed it seemed to be in process of printing another page; after I deleted that job the cpu slowly returned to normal, the roaring engines (fans) quieted down, etc. Then, all of a sudden, the screen went black. I cannot wake it (the sleep light is not on, btw, but I can hear some very soft noise under the lower left corner, so I know it's not completely shut off) although I'm sure I don't know all the tricks to try at this point. I should point out that this sudden blank-out has happened a time or two in the past two days, but I'd thought it was battery related. Did a calibration and the battery seems strong and fit. Anyway, the computer was plugged in to AC at the failures.
Now that Apple has this sudden popularity and has not increased their tech work force, as far as I can tell--twice in the past week my wait time has been over 30 minutes--I'm more loathe to call them. Plus, it seems that, although I'm the first to admit I know little when it comes to saavy tech info on the Macs, despite my having been a Macuser for over 20 years (I go by feel, with all its ups and downs, I guess), it seems that I know more than the tech person i get on the line. This is disconcerting to me. Example, I was dealing with a mail app issue and I asked the tech person what the Envelope Index was and was told that..."uh...I've heard of it, but I don't know what it does." I love my Mac, always have, so this tech issue (long wait time and less than informed answers) strikes me as odd at best.
Anyway, I post this here in hopes that I can get some assistance from some of you tech saavy and generous forum contributors might help. (I'm on hold now for this with Apple tech for 35+ minutes now.)
Thanks, Paul
PS I'm using another computer to post this now.

Well, I've been with tech support now for 40 minutes (call's been hour and twenty so far) and it seems it's a hardware issue, not battery and not software. The black screen is happening faster and faster. Have reset PMU, PRAM, etc. No luck, so I'm on hold, being bumped to a higher authority. I'll mark this as answered, simply because it appears to be on the wrong forum...probably.

  • IPod touch sudden black screen, not detected by iTunes

I was using my iPod Touch yesterday & connected it to iTunes, it beeped like usual when it's plugged in, was lit up for no more than a second, then suddenly went black. I tried plugging it both into a wall outlet (using a USB converter) & back into my computer, & it was not detected.
I have tried holding down home+power for 10 seconds & just power for 10 seconds & it still isn't turning on or showing up in iTunes. Any ideas?
    Thank you so much.

I am having the exact same problem with my 13" early 2011 Macbook Pro. I have 10.6.8. I used the disk that came with the laptop to restore the OS to 10.6.7 but the problem existed there too. I have now updated it back to 10.6.8. The problem still exists. This doesn't seem to be limited to an OS version and seems like an issue with device driver or with hardware. I will try to take it to the Apple store and see if this gets resolved.
You too have a black screen in Windows 7. ?

  • Sudden black screen on Macbook Pro.

    Hi everyone,
Occasionally when using my macbook pro the screen turns black, yet the macbook appears to be still running (keyboard lighting is still on and the notebook makes its usual sounds). This happens like once a week on a random occasion, but always seems to follow an action (last time the screen went black after emptying my iPhoto trash can). To activate my macbook i always have to manually shut down and reboot.
I use a Macbook Pro purchased in 2010, with mac OS X Lion installed. This sudden black screen problem did not occur before installing Lion.
Does anyone else experience this problem? And any suggestions on solving it?
    Kind regards,
    Tom

I have the following failure since updating the EFI firmaware in my Macbook Pro 13" 2011:

I´ve been asking Apple for about a month to fix it under warranty but no answer so far, they say tha the error cannot be repoduced at the store so I sent the video to them, still waiting for an answer.

  • Horrible sudden black screen

    Hello,
My new macbook pro, which is just one year old, has a problem. I must face up to sudden black screen when I'm using it, which obliges me to restart my machine. The fact that I am on battery power or not does not matter : the problem occurs, especially when I am on the Internet and download big file.
    Regards,
    Philémon

If you are still under warranty and/or have AppleCare, call them.  Let them deal w/it.

You have got a Mid 2010 15-inch MacBook Pro, and the log shows that your NVIDIA GPU is damaged.
Mid 2010 15-inch MacBooks Pro come with a defective NVIDIA GPU that may cause unexpected restarts, black screens, kernel panics... See > http://support.apple.com/kb/TS4088

  • Installing Windows 7 Using bootcamp 5.0 on MBPr OSX 10.8.2 Black Screen Not Loading Windows 7 Install on Boot

I am trying to install Windows 7 using Bootcamp Assistence 5.0 on a MacBook Pro Retina OSX 10.8.2, I went through all steps on Creatting the Windows 7.iso into a bootable USB Dirve 16GB I use a separate USB Drive 2 GB and download Windows Support Drivers Step 2 on bootcamp assistence. I run into the problem in step 3 when the computer reboot I just get a black screen the back display still on like I can still see the apple on the back lit up, but the screen is black and wont load the window installer, if i shut it down and bring it back up i get error saying IOS not found so then i have to shut it down, enter recovery and restart on osx partition, i can see that the bootcamp partition was created but cant load windows to it. Please can anybody help me or guide me on what i am doing wrong? thank you so much in advance

this will install as normal. before installing however you will need an activation key cos in win 7 this is one of the first pages that is presented before instalation.
the key from your relative could possibly work especially if he used your internet connection to register. but this could cause problems with his/your authenticity after 30 days.
the only other option is to purchase a key.
you say a 30 day trial, does it give you a temporary key for this?

  • Pls Advise Why my iPod Touch's Albums: Tiny black screens, not pictures

    Hello,
I've got a 16GB iPod Touch, 1st generation with 2.1 Software Update. I manage the music manually on a Windows XP desktop. I love this device and have been loving it since i got it as a Valentine's gift early this year.
I'd customized some of the album art images with jpgs found online, saved to hard drive. this was especially useful for those albums (homemade) that didn't have cover art associated with on iTunes/Gracenotes or wherever apple goes to find cover art.
The problem now is that in the Music Folder, when I browse Albums on the Vertical (not Cover Flow) view, some images are 1) misplaced i.e. Snoop Dogg's picture where Chaka Khan's should be or 2) images are replaced with a tiny black screen. (this isn't the negative black screen I've been reading about) There seems to be some error in how the Album View Vertical is working. When I flip through the images in Cover Flow (Horizontal) every thing is fine; even the tiny black screens of the Vertical mode show their true picture in horizontal Cover Flow. i'm wondering about the tiny black screen, since I usually get a musical note image if there is no art, not a black screen.
    So here are my questions:
    1) Why am I getting tiny black screens instead of album art images in the Albums preview screens?
    2) Could this be related to some general sluggish responses to the screen at times?
    3) I have two total pages of applications that work fine (if sluggish--the NYTimes is a big culprit in the sluggishness department-even blanking out the iPod, but even sweet Wurdle can act up), would this be related?
    4) Is there a way to fix this tiny black screens issue without having to wipe the whole iPod clean (sniff! fingers crossed!)
    Thanks!

I had the exact same issue and just spent a good chunk of time fixing things. I made note of each bad album - covers were OK in Cover Flow and when song was playing but vertical scroll and tiny thumbnail in the corner of the tracks window showed only a black thumbnail - then deleted these albums from my iPod. Then I went back and re-added these albums to my iPod but added them ONE AT A TIME by showing the artwork column in my library and dragging them over by the artwork and waiting for each album to finish and finish syncing before dragging the next one over. This seems to have brought back the tiny thumbnails and fixed the problem for now. I have no idea why it did this but I think there's an artwork bug in iTunes that needs to be fixed in the next update as many others have said that dragging over too many albums at once seems to cause issues with artwork showing up in general.
I know it sounds like a pain to drag over one album at a time and wait for it to finish but it seems to be the only way to do things for now. Hope this helps.

  • Sudden black screen and goes dead

I had a similar version of this problem 2 days ago but after lots of button pushing, etc. it started working again but the problem has returned.
My PowerBook suddenly, without warning, flicks to a black screen and the motor shuts down immediately. There's no winding down in sound, it simply stops on a dime. The only way to get it running again is to reset the power manager. I get it up and running for a few minutes and then again, without warning, goes black and dead at the same time. Also, if I get it up and running for a few minutes and shut the lid, when I open it again the screen looks normal but within 15-20 it does the black dead thing.
I've reset the power manager. I've run a repair permissions with the CD and utility disk. I've also repaired disk using the CD and utility disk. I did a hardware check. All of these have never said there was a problem in the first place. I've reset the PRAM.
Are there any other suggestions? I need this laptop for a swim banquet this Sunday.
I dread the thought of doing a clean install. The last time I did that it took me all day to get things back to normal. Would a clean install help in this situation? Could someone get me the steps to do the easiest install.....I think I must have clicked the wrong way before and that is why it took a long time to get things back to normal.
    Thanks so much in advance.

I have posted this question under Powerbook and with no responses at all. I saw where a similar question to this was asked on this forum before with several people helping that maybe I would have more luck here.
I appreciate any and all help. You guys are wonderful.
I've taken out the battery but can't find where the air port card is located.
When my husband gets home I'm going to ask him to open it up to make sure the memory is firmly in place.
Does anyone know anything else I can try?

  • IPhone suddenly- black screen

Suddenly my phone turned off with 88% battery. It seemed to be operating fine a moment ago. I placed it on my table and I go to turn the screen on, and the thing just flat out turns off.
Any ideas what to do? I plugged it in and nothing so far.

the same thing happened to mine only being 4 days old with 43% battery. this happened after being in my pocket for a few mins and working fine. it was the black screen and unresponsive to both buttons no matter how long i held them down for, after about a minute being plugged in the apple icon came on and it booted up and still had 41% power.... any idea what is causing this?

  • Black Screen (Not Death Screen)

Ok, here's my problem.  Every so often (More often now) my LCD screen would go black and become Non-Detected by my windows operating system. My external monitors all connect and can be detected but this one can not. I have checked my LCD Bulb and it is fine, my inverter is fine aswell and so is my graphics card. I know this because my screen was working yesterday and the screen was Detected then. I am doing an inverter check later on today and as for my graphics card, well it wouldn't be showing up on my external monitor if it were bad. I honestly have no earthly idea why this is happening but I am wondering if my computer needs to have a Reflow done on it. It is an Compaq Presario Cq61 and I purchased it in 2010. If anyone knows anything I would really enjoy the help. Thanks.

    Dann91 wrote:
I am speaking about my Internal LCD screen not an external monitor. Every external monitor I connect to my laptop displays perfectly fine and can be Detected when i select "Screen Resolustion".
This is what happen If i put my laptop into hibernate for an hour or so and wake it up the screen will display SOMETIMES not all the times (Does not Happen Every Time). I have already replaced the Video Cable with another geniune cable. It did nothing. I checked the graphics chip and my Ram sticks, also found nothing wrong. I'm wondering if it could actually be the LCD screen itself or the Inverter that sends the power.
I don't think it is the LCD though and the reason behind that is because it still comes on occasinonally and when it comes on it STAYS on, there's no flickering of any sort, no turning off, no color changes, no stand stills or any types of problems until I have to shut down my computer.
I have called for support and the only thing they keep telling me is they'll have to look at it for 149.99$ the make and model of this laptop is a Compaq Presario CQ61 (2009)
This is what I meant. The internal vga cable. It could be a buggy vga driver. I had a netbook that had an issue when it came from hibernation and it was a bad graphics driver (Windows one). BTW: My Dv6 laptop went straight to BSOD after waking up from hybernantion. However, I don't use Windows so didn't bother much about it.

  • IBook G4 - Boots, then black screen - not a backlight issue

My iBook g4 12" 1.33 Ghz doesn't want to boot into the system.
    1. Start computer (chime sound)
    2. Apple logo on grey background appears
    3. Spinning wheel below Logo appears
    4. Screen flicker, big vertical zigzag appears, black screen (backlight is on)
    5. Shift key work (led on/off)
    6. Num Lock key works (led on/off)
    7. no responses with any other keys on keyboard
    What I tried so far
    1. Reset PRAM & NVRAM & PMU
    2. Put original installer disc in, press C start from DVD - same as above happens
    3. Boot from external hard drive with operating system over Firewire - same as above happens
    4. Mounted iBook drive as external drive with target mode - Other computer boots fine with iBook drive
    5. Attached an external monitor, which doesn't get a signal
    6. Run Hardware test over DVD - Diagnostics all fine (Screen fine all the time, running through all diagnostics)
    7. Tried pressing on the graphic chip, as some forum entries suggest - didn't change anything
    8. Start in Safe mode with shift key - no indication that in safe mode, same faults
    9. Start in single-mode (see image http://www.somethingonline.org/dl/pb/singlemode.jpg)
Don't know what else to try
    Any help appreciated

    Markus:
Run Hardware test over DVD - Diagnostics all fine (Screen fine all the time, running through all diagnostics)
Your issues seems rather strange. From the statement quoted above, am I to understand that when you boot from the Apple Hardware Test disk you are able to see the tests running on the monitor, but when you attempt booting from the install disk you cannot see anything on the monitor? If that is so, it seems rather odd that you can boot from one and not from the other.
Mounted iBook drive as external drive with target mode - Other computer boots fine with iBook drive.
When you booted in FW-TDM which computer was Target and which was host? Sounds like you were able to use the iBook as the host computer with the other as Target. Try it the other way around with the iBook in Target Mode and the other computer as Host. Then launch Disk Utility and run Repair Disk on the iBook, selecting the iBook's HDD (manufacturer's ID) in the sidebar. Post back with results. If you are able to do so download and run SMART Utility - 2.0.2 for a reading on the HDD. I am not sure if it will work with the iBook as a FW drive, but it gives more information about the HDD than Disk Utility, which only gives a Verified or Failed status.
    Good luck.

  • Black screen/not recognised in Itunes/Windows - tried everything?

My ipod was working fine until a couple of weeks ago when I decided it was time to sync it, and itunes asked me to upgrade the os - which I did, but after a while it froze, then my only option available was to restore - which I did, when it froze again. I'm now left with an ipod touch that has a black screen, is not recognised by itunes, doesn't show up as a device in 'my computer', but does make the 'usb plugged in' sound when i plug it in/out.
    I've tried:
Holding down the buttons to force it to restart / switch off - nothing
Holding the home button whilst plugging it in - nothing
    Charging it - nothing
uninstalling all apple/itunes components and doing a clean reinstall - nothing
using a different computer - nothing
I cant check to see what setting the ipod is in, as the screen is black.
Any suggestions? It's not even 18 months old, has only had light use and I love it!
