Sudden change in battery performance

Hello. I am having trouble with my battery. I charge my phone every night, and ever since the last software update (2.1) have had great performance. This performance has changed this week, as my battery is already drained today at 230p. (Last week I could go all day and not get the low battery warning.) I have not made any calls today and have only used the ipod for ~30 minutes and email for ~5 minutes. 3G is turned off. Wifi is turned off. Bluetooth is turned off. Has anyone else seen a similar sudden change in performance? Is there anything I can do to fix this problem? I could understand losing charge if I was using the phone, but since it's just sitting idle in my pocket I cannot figure out why I would have such a low battery.
Thanks

Something just got stuck in memory processing.
Try a reboot (described below).
Think of it this way, the iPhone is more of a computer than a phone. It suffers from being a new OS and nobody can deny there are not bugs and memory leaks. The longer left running, the more things start to fail or slow down (I have had the iPhone since day one of original phone and I am just speaking from my experience). Thus I equate it to like when Windows95 came out...not sure of your age or if you remember those days...but back then it was a running joke of how many days you can keep Windows 95 running before you had to reboot. I am sorry to say but the iPhone is the same way right now (but getting better with a few hiccups back during the 2.0 release). So for me, I reboot daily when I leave in the morning and take it off the charger. By doing so I rarely see any lag or problems.
A reset/reboot is:
Go to Home Screen
Press and Hold Home Button
Keep holding and press and hold Lock Button
Keep holding Both
You will see Slide to Turn Off (Don't let go to slide, just keep holding)
The phone will turn off (in time, but screen will look like it has some white lines)
Keep Holding
When you see the Apple Logo, you can let go.
Turning off via the Slide to Turn off while good and fine to turn off, is more like the Sleep Mode on a computer. Thus any locked up issues in memory remain when you turn back on. A reboot as described is like doing a real Turn off and Turn On on a computer.
You may also wish to read this tread about reboots and odd application behavior.

  • Sudden drop in battery performance?

I've had my iPhone 3gs since release, been more than happy with the battery performance untill the last two days. The battery is dropping 2% at a time suddenly. Very quickly. I have restored the phone. I am getting concerned. Any ideas?

Lots of threads about this. Seems to be an issue with the 3.0.1 update or the way it affects certain apps. There are a couple step-by-step tutorials about resetting the battery sensor, restoring as a new phone, etc. Try one or all of those and see if it helps.

  • Sudden drop in battery performance / condition

I have a late 2010 MacBook Air. Battery suddenly says "Service Battery". Was away for 11 days and when opened air to use noticed this?

Do what it says. If it's the MBA's original battery it's probably due for replacement.

  • Macbook pro is not getting turn on and further when i press power button the green orange light suddenly changes to green again, moreover battery meter is not working

    Hi
Last night my macbook pro gets off automatically when battery gets empty and in the morning it isn't turning on. When i connect the charger, the light on the charger turns green to orange (showing that it is charging) but when i press the power button it suddenly changes to green again. I thought there must not be any connection between the charger light and the power button. And battery meter was running fine.
When it tried this again and again the charger light disappear and battery meter also stops working, when i clearly observe it there is a very dim green light in the charger (not observable in the light) and the laptop is still not showing any change.
    please help!

  • Battery performance reduced abruptly

I just bought my MBP 15" with a 2.8 GHz intel core i7 processor, 8 gb in ram, and 500 gb hard drive in december 2010 (6 months ago) and it worked perfectly until after a couple of months later. I decided to restore it and install windows 7 with bootcamp, but after restoring OSX, battery life performance was all of a sudden reduced abruptly. It only had gone about 80 cycles and now battery was not lasting more than 4-5 hours at 5 %. The battery icon on finder went totally crazy, going from 10 hours to 1 in just a second no matter the charge percentage; every time i checked it, it showed a different time. I calibrated it at least 3 times before deciding to go to a service center.
I took it to an authorized apple service establishment to claim my applecare plan. Neither the battery nor the MBP showed any problems and apple would only blame it on usage, but the service guy did detect something wrong, so he kept trying and after  A LOT of scans and tests, battery finally showed a problem, which allowed him to order a replacement battery.
When i got my device back, I started noticing the problem was not really fixed, so i kept monitoring the battery performance only to find it was still going wrong. This time I did not bootcamp windows. I finally convinced myself that i was being too tough with my MBP after a few calibrations until battery started to go even crazier than the first time, plus this time, also the hard drive was showing problems since it would take literally about 10 minutes to start and it would never turn off unless I forced it to do so. I took it again to the service station where they ran test and got me a new battery replacement and a new hard drive.
This is my third battery in less than 6 months, and now I am starting to detect those same symptoms in the battery performance that in the past. This time i decided to take it to technical service before it totally crashed like past times, but since it was a different guy who checked it, he did not detect anything and did nothing to it. I am pretty sure my MBP is totally sick since this time, with only 20 cycles, battery is lasting from 1 to 4.5 hours with minimum usage, but no one seems to know whats wrong with it. I tried asking for a whole MBP new replacement with my applecare extended warranty, but they just keep blaming it to the usage i give to my device (which by the ways has been kept to minimum since the last time I got it back)
Please any help from anyone? I am kind of desperate and disappointed at this point.

I'd be concerned that it might be some other controller component or a bad logic board if other parts are repeated failing, maybe something else is causing them to fail.
I'm probably flirting with the terms of use here, but I'd recommend trying out small dog electronics in vermont for your repair (google them, don't want to post a link to risk losing the post before you get to see it). I get no compensation from them, I'm just a fan of their work. they're very thorough and if you explain the whole problem and what you've done before, they'll go above and beyond to test and retest after they do work to confirm they've fixed things. they have a mail-in service option too so it doesn't matter where you live. if you haven't resolved this yet, I'd check them out. as an independent apple reseller and repair center, they seem to be more of a consumer advocate than just a fixit genius bar looking to resolve an immediate problem and move on to the next. that said, I've had great experiences with my local genius bars. I'm just saying that maybe someone like small dog would have a better chance to test, fix, and re-test over some time or a few days to confirm a fix before giving it back. I'm thinking it's more than a battery if other components aren't behaving as well. I'm not a tech so I can't suggest what to try, only where I'd try next and expect good results.

  • 10.6.4 shorten my battery performance

After upgrade to 10.6.4, I found the battery performance does not perform as before.
It used to have 9hrs (displayed in menu bar) that I can work with.
However, after 10.6.4, the battery indicator shows 7hrs only at same working environment (safari, iwork, msn, endnote, and some small research software, and 50% screen brightness).
Is this my self-suspicion or it is the problem comes with 10.6.4?

FWIW, I have not noticed much difference in battery life with my white 2008 MacBook after updating it to 10.6.4.
I don't usually have the menu bar icon set to display time remaining because as noted by another poster it is just an estimate that changes often depending on what I'm doing. For example, with a fully charged battery, I see about a 5 ½ hour estimate with no apps running but as soon as I start Hulu Desktop & connect to its servers over Airport, the estimate almost immediately drops to about 3 hours & declines from there. But if I quit the app, the estimate jumps back up. If I then let display sleep kick in for a minute or two & then wake the screen, I immediately but briefly see an estimate of over 7 hours! For that reason, I leave the icon set to display percent of battery power remaining.
This behavior has been about the same since I got the MB with Leopard installed & remained so through all versions of Snow Leopard, 10.6.4 included.
One thing to check is your battery's condition. (As described in Mac OS X 10.6 Help: Battery conditions, this is very easy to do with Snow Leopard.) If it doesn't say "Normal" it may need service or replacement.
Another thing to check is if all your power related system preferences are still set to what they were before applying the update. Sometimes an update will reset one or more of them to a default or unexpected value.
Also, it might help to share battery info like charge cycle count, a rough indicator of how much the battery has been used & its remaining capacity to hold a charge. See Determining Battery Cycle Count for more about that. FWIW, my 2008 MacBook isn't used much & has only gone through 58 charge cycles. As recommended in Apple - Batteries - Notebooks, I occasionally let it discharge completely.

  • Sudden change date and hour

    Hi,
yesterday I turned on my Mac and, after typed my password to login in, I found a warning icon telling that the date and the hour is changed to 01 January 2001, 03.05.00 (I don't remember very well the hour).
So I adjust the date and the hour in the Date and Hour Setting, then I found that the computer asked to select the home wireless network as if it is the first time I used the Pc. Obviously I selected my wireless network with his password, and everything was fine.
    And today is fine.
But my question is : this sudden change of date and network is work of a malicious cookie, or malware? Or a problem of the OS X?
I am very careful with downloads from internet: I download only from well-known sites (as university, documents from my friends..), but should I delete the cookies from Safari and Firefox?
    Marta
PS= before I write this post, I looked for information on my computer, but I don't understand much...

First, it would be helpful to know what model of computer you have.
Any time the date and time reset, it is likely because of an SMC reset. This can happen under several scenarios, the most common being that your computer lost power entirely. Current laptops have a coin battery in addition to the main battery that actually powers your computer. That way if the main battery dies, the coin battery still keeps the date and time settings. If the coin battery is bad (or if you have an older computer like an iBook or 12" PowerBook that doesn't have one) and your main battery dies, the date and time will reset.
If you have an iMac, and your computer was unplugged or if your home was without power for a length of time, it's also possible for this to happen, but it depends on the model as to the specifics.
It is not likely the cause of a 'malicious cookie or malware', Macs very rarely get viruses.

  • N8 Sudden Decrease In Battery Life

I have had my N8 for years and have loved it every minute.  Through ^3, Anna, and Belle i've always had 2 days of battery life with average use (power saving off).  Last week however, my N8 suddenly had battery issues.  There were no app, firmware, or setting changes preceding.  So it's not anything obvious draining it.
When I charged the phone overnight (wall charger), I'd wake up in the morning and see Nokia Battery Monitor showing that the phone stopped charging prior to 100%. For example it would state: "Charged xHr yMins ago to 95%" or "98%".  Occasionally it would also show up at 100%.
With this also came a drastic sudden drop in battery life.  I would see approximatley 14-15h of life, and now I'm down to about 9-10.  When looking at NBM stats, it would say "Background" used >100% of battery life at times.  Under background would be things like Messaging, Music Player, and Notes, which is completely wrong.  See below:
Here's what ive tried so far:
    1) Use AppStop to kill all background apps, no effect.
    2) 7370 hard reset to clear everything and go to factory settings.  Wiped phone, mass, and card. No effect.  Used AppStop to get to bare minimums.  No effect.
    3) Reinstalled Belle via Suite.  No effect.
    4) Let battery drain until it shut off, then used wall charger while phone stayed off overnight. Nope
    5) Let battery drain down til shut off, then used USB charging. Nothing. Repeated this hoping it would "recalibrate" battery levels.  Nothing.
    Nokia Energy Profiler Stats:
Ran this for about 20 mins to get some stats:
    1) Idle draw with screen on is about 0.20-0.30W, 15% CPU consumption.  Occasional spike up to 30%.
    2) Idle with screen off is barely 0.02W, 3-4% CPU consuption.  Occasional spike.
    3) Based on the power consumption, it still estimates that I should get 40+ hours of battery life on a full charge.
Battery lasting less than a day?  I feel like an iPhone user.  I get that I could always turn 3G off or power saving on and stretch it a bit more, but that's not a fix, it's just a Band-Aid over a bigger issue.   Anybody have ideas?  Should I buy a new battery and replace it?

Updates:  So I bought a brand new genuine BL-4D hoping it would fix the problem.  Nope, didn't happen...though the battery seems to now charge to 100%.   EIther way this leads me to believe it's not  a battery problem.  Unless there's an issue with the charging circuit, this I"m back to a consumption problem.
So I tried another belle refresh and a "Factory Settings" restore from the menu, didn't help.  Not sure what to do now, as Battery Monitor doesn't really point me to anything that's killing the battery.  So I decided to do more research with Energy Profiler and ran it for approx. 50 mins to see what the consumption deal is.
I exported the data as a .csv and cleaned up the data.  I've attached the power and current graphs.  In both graphs you see that there's very low consumption immediately after starting the measurement and locking the phone.  Afterwards, there are two distinct idle consumption values, approx 42mA (.16W) and 130mA (.49W).
An average 42mA power draw would give me approx 28.5h battery life (1200mAh/42mA=28.57h).  However an average power draw of 130mA would result in a 9.2h battery life.  The actual average of all my Current data points is approx 99.9mA, giving me 12h of battery life, which is about what I'm seeing at the moment.
I know my idle consumption is lower with 3G off and even lower with power saving on, but I haven't gotten the chance to record these measurements yet.
I'm still not sure what's causing a high idle power consumption, any ideas?

  • MfE and battery performance

We change our server and we start using exchange four our emails.
Before I tested the service with m2web.com and my E61 and everything was ok.
When I start using E61 with the new server the mobile discharge the battery in 9/12 hours.
Is any particular configuration that I've to suggest to our IT department?
    Thanks, Marcello

I have been running the latest version of MfE and found the battery performance degraded badly.
After some investigation I found that this was caused by the new feature automatic heartbeat interval adjustment. Since I perform quite a lot of roaming and travel through areas with low coverage the heart beat interval was automatically adjusted to 1 minute. My battery only lasted for a day.
I reinstalled the previous version (MfE 2.0) and set the heartbeat manually to 10 minutes. All is OK and battery life is now again several days.

  • Maximize battery performance

Nowadays phones have a lot of built in features that couldsignificantly lower your battery time.
These tips and tricks shouldhelp you maximize battery performance.
Turning off 3G: If you don´t need a fast data connection or the ability to make video calls.
Turning off GPS: If you don´t need you GPS for navigation or geo-tagging of pictures or videos.
Turning off Bluetooth/IrDA: If you don´t use a Bluetooth/IrDA connection to a headset or any other device.
Turning off WLAN scanning: If you´re not currently looking for a network.
Lower screen brightness/timeout: Lower the screen brightness and timeout.
Keep phone´s FW up to date: FW updates could include better battery management.
Close unused applications: Try to have as few applications as possible running, especially those that use a WLAN or other network connection.
Turn your phone off (or change to "Offline" profile): If you're in an area with no signal for a long period of time. Smartphones (N97, 5800XM etc.) shouldn´t be turned off, because this´ll take more battery than to keep them on and change to "Offline" profile.
Fully discharge from time to time: There is no problem in charging the battery often, although you can improve your battery indicator and the the battery life, by discharging it every 15-20 charges in order recalibrate it.
Set a dark theme: Displays consume more energy when bright colors are shown. Use dark themes and wallpaper images in your device.
If there´s anything you´d like to add to this, feel free to contact me!
If you´re not sure on how to do it with your model just ask within the board, people there are always glad to help!
Thanks to users miamicx4 and phonehacker for their contribiution!

  • Decreasing Battery Performance

My MBP 17 Unibody battery was working fine for the first 1-9 cycles and I was getting about 7 to 7.5 hours out of it, but now from 10 cycles my battery life *****. I can only get up to a maximum of 4 hours after a full change and recalibration (used it till it shut down, waited 5 hours then charged it overnight for 7 hours straight without any interuptions). This is very frustrating and I'm trying to figure out why this is? I am on 'better battery performance' and I have no CPU intensive programs running and my display is on the lowest level setting.
Any help or suggestions would be greatly appreciated...

I get the same "problem", and it is frustrating as he**. My MBP is about 2 months old, I use it every day, and I probably charge it once a day. This gives me a cycle count at about 60 now (holidays included - where the computer has not worked a lot). My battery is already going down, I'll be lucky to get three hours of use. And there is another problem: Yesterday I was at 25% of battery (the icon was still black), I took a leak, and made a cup of tea - and when I returned to my computer the icon was at 10%, and when I tried to keep working it went to 6% and then came the "low battery warning".
Apple gives you 300 cycles, and after that you are on your own - and have to buy a new battery... I actually work on my computer, I do not sit at the coffee house surfing the web. I am currently graduating, doing my masters in graphic design, and is using my computer a lot - by this rate the battery will be dead within six months.
On apple Store, you can see someone having written a review of the MBP battery, stating that his battery went from 100-94% in a WEEK. That is just sad.

  • Why my Laptop close suddenly and a battery quickly ends?

    Hi,
Why my Laptop close suddenly and a battery quickly ends?
I contact a charge with a laptop for 20-25 min and than the battery became full.
But after five to ten minutes I see the percentage of battery go very quickly to 70 % and than to 50% suddenly shut down. Again I contact a charger to laptop. This problem in laptop started for 12 days.
Tell me what should I do? I'm using laptop every day to study, is that reason?
My friend told me maybe the battery need to change; I bought my laptop in 2012! It is not a long time. Mac OS C Version 10.6.8
I'm not an expert in electronic devices, but Do you think that there is another reason to close it suddenly or laptop battery quickly ends?
Is Mac Center provides service "change a battery" in the same day?  Or I have to send my laptop and waiting a long time?

What you describe sounds like a hardware issue. Unfortunately, you'll need to get that checked out by Apple. If you have an Apple Store near you, make an appointment with the Genius Bar and take the machine in for evaluation.

  • Network name suddenly changed.

Came home and our network name has suddenly changed to "Apple (numbers and letterw) Network. Not sure why because we had no powe routage and did not reset the base station. How can I set back our original network name and password? I believe in Airport Utilities but can't seem to make it happen. Thanks for the help.
    John

OK thanks. The reason your Extreme decided to reset itself is a mystery, but you ought to be able to get it to reappear in AirPort Utility normally with a "hard reset": Press and hold its reset button and keep it depressed, five to ten seconds or so, long enough for its LED to flash rapidly. While it starts up the LED will be solid amber for a minute or two. When it completes its startup sequence, the LED will flash amber, slowly. It should then be visible in AirPort Utility. You will then need to reconfigure it.
Before performing the "hard reset", click the Other AirPort Base Stations button:
See if your Extreme appears there.

  • IMAC OSX 10.7.4 Safari why does screen suddenly change to large print etc when I cam surfing the net and how do I change it back to normal size

Safari - Since changing from Leopard to OSX when surfing the net, my screen suddenly changes to large print/icons etc.  How do I change it back to normal.  It is driving me crazy

That's caused by the "Smart zoom" feature of the magic mouse.  It's a Double tap with one finger to zoom and repeat to unzoom.
You can turn the feature off if desired in System Preferences > Mouse > Point & Click tab
