Sudden change in wireless range
I've had Fios for TV and Internet in my home for about 10 months now. No problems. I keep the router — the standard MI424WR — in an office on the ground floor. Two days ago, during the bad snowstorm, I am online (Toshiba Satellite running Windows XP) and watching TV upstairs when my service is interrupted — very briefly. My TV programming went out maybe three times in the span of a minute. The longest outage was about 10 seconds. The power stayed on, just the programming went off. Then the TV comes back on and everything is fine. But I notice that I can't navigate the Internet. "Internet Explorer cannot display the Web page."
So I go downstairs and turn the modem off for a few seconds and turn it back on. I come upstairs and restart my computer. That usually works, but this time I get the "limited or no connectivity" message, although it is telling me the signal strength is excellent. I try retyping my WEP key, unplugging the router, resetting the router — nothing. On my television, I have the wireless Roku box that streams Netflix movies. I turn that on. That still works. And I can still pick up WiFi on my phone. So I'm thinking the problem is with my computer. The desktop that my router is hooked up to downstairs still works, so I spend a couple hours looking up Web solutions with no success. Then I bring the laptop downstairs. I use a cable to plug it in to the router. I'm back online. In fact, it I even lose the "limited or no connectivity" message. I unplug the cable and I'm still connected.
A few minutes and a couple experiments later and I finally realize that I stay connected wirelessly as long as I am very close to the router. If I stray too far, I get "limited or no connectivity" and if I wander back, I reconnect. Now I don't know what to think. I've never had any problem like this before. And to confuse me even more, when I take a close look at the settings on the wireless Roku box, it says my signal strength is "poor." Prior to this incident, I don't think I had ever taken notice of that so I don't know if anything has changed.
So to make a long story even longer, I guess my question is: Does this sound like a problem with a setting on the router or with the computer?
You can try changing the channel on the router. The best channels to use are 1, 6,11. To change the wireless channel on the router: log into the management page of the router, click on wireless settings, click on basic security settings, go to option #3 and choose the channel you want, then go to the bottom of the page and click save. You may want to try all 3 channels to see which one gets the best signal.

MacBook Pro wireless range has suddenly decreased
I've had my MacBook for almost a year now and the wireless range has been fine. However, a few days ago the wireless started going a bit dodgy - it would sometimes stop working and website would not load. But a quick restart sorted it all out.
Then, since yesterday it has stopped working completely when I am in my room (where it previously worked find.) But when I move closer to the router it works....
Does anyone know any fixes or would getting in contact with apple be the best option?
Thanks in advance,
SGreenUK
(Sorry if this has come up before, there are so many problems about networking on the internet I could not find one with my specific problem.)Thanks for the reply.
I changed the channel and then I did a proper reboot of my router ( from within the router settings) and it seems to have fixed everything. -
WRT54GL: setup suddenly won't let me change the wireless channel anymore
I have a Linksys WRT54GL version 1.1. The firmware is 4.30.11 (European version).
In the Basic Wireless Settings I can't change the Wireless Channel. It remains at channel 1, and I simply can't alter it.
This is strange, because in earlier firmware versions, I was able to change the channel without any problems at all. I would like to continue to use this firmware version. How can I solve this problem?
Thanks in advance, Pjotr.
Message Edited by pjotr123 on 04-01-2008 10:25 AMNot a browser thing; I tried Firefox, Epiphany and Konqueror. I found the solution, however!
Apparently a small bug in the firmware, but it can be circumvented. Changing wireless channels becomes impossible when in the Advanced Wireless Settings, SecureEasySetup is disabled.
So all you have to do to change wireless channels, is to enable SecureEasySetup. You have to keep it enabled, however: disabling it after a successful channel change, reverts the wireless channel to number 1 again and keeps it locked again.
For the time being (until Linksys fixes this bug), I will have to be satisfied with channel 1. Because I dislike the one-button-security thing SES, and I prefer to define my own security manually. Also I fear an accidental button-pressing.... :-)
Thanks anyway for your assistance.
Greetz, Pjotr.

Is there any way I can reduce my wireless range?
Hi,
I'm looking into ways of making my wireless connection as secure as possible, and one thing I would like to be able to do is reduce the range in which it is accessible. I have a very small flat, so I do not need the signal to cover vast distances, so why broadcast all the way down the street when I don't need to?
Any advice welcome.
On a different note, when I first set up my connection last month - and for about the first 10 days of using it - it was set to security type WPA-PSK. I hadn't changed any of the encryption settings from default (i.e. WPA+WPA2 enabled). I subsequently changed my security key to something stronger and the security type then changed without me doing anything else to my settings to WPA2-PSK (I find that strange, but hey ho). I subsequently discovered that WPA2 is far stronger encryption than WPA, and that WPA can be hacked. Was there a chance my wireless security could have been compromised during those first 10 days - nothing I can do about it now, but I guess I'd like to know for future reference.
It would of course be a big help if BT advised their customers about all this sort of stuff before set up, but they seem to think supplying basic information along with their default settings is enough!
Thanks,
J.Well, there are a few things you could do...
Redecorate your whole flat using tin foil (including the windows)
Line all the walls with lead
Connect by ethernet and turn off the SSID (You'll need to opt out of Fon if a V2 hub is in use)
Open the hub (assuming it's a V2) and remove one of the two omnidirectional antennae
Also, it's doubtful that anyone did connect. You could check the home network via the hub manager.
By default, the hub (V2) is secure, plus you've already changed the wireless key

External hard drives suddenly changed to read only
Three of my external hard drives suddenly changed to read only. These hard drives have been working on my macbook pro for months. When I click on get info 'read only' shows up and there is no lock icon nor is there a window that shows name | permissions, also in disk utility the 'verify disk premissions', 'verify disk', 'repair disk', and 'repair disk premissions' buttons are ghosted and I can not select them. I have not made any changes to my computer and I have read many other posts and have not been able to find a solution.
About a hundred times with no luck. Some of my research is leading to Western Digital, there may be a problem with the drives' 'smartware' software. I've been using this drive for months and I never used the 'smartware', but I tried it anyway with no luck. I just remembered that four days ago I had this drive plugged this drive into an Iomega wireless storage device and it seemed to work fine. Now the wireless storage device can't find the drive at all. I just need to know if there is a way I can change the permissions back to read/write, otherwise I will have to buy another drive and transfer all the data to the new drive and re-formatt the wd drive.

Hello
The modulation on my homehub has suddenly changed from G.992.5 Annex A to G.992.3 Annex A and my speeds have dropped dramatically from Downstream 5,759 Kbps & Upstream 1,008 Kbps to Downstream 1,603 Kbps & Upstream 1,100 Kbps. There is apparently a telephony problem in my area affecting ISDN lines which I assume may be affecting my broadband as well. Can I assume that after this problem is fixed the modulation on my homehub and speeds will automatically revert to what they were, or will I have to do something ?
Thanks for your helpHi - thank you for the pointers.

The quiet line test has a lot of hiss but no crackles.
Could all this just be down to the local telephony problem ? If so will everything revert once the BT report that the have fixed the telephony problem in my area or will I have to do something to get things back to how they were ?
Thanks again -
I have a white 13" macbook which i bought about 6 months ago. We have the new BT home hub wireless router (the black V.2 model). I can get the network no problem in the adjacent rooms but as soon as i go upstairs i get nothing. Can anyone explain why my range is so poor??
Hi sutton185,
Welcome to the forum.
There are a lot of variables that can affect the "performance" of the range of your wireless router. Location of the router, interference from other electronic equipment (telephone, TV, radio etc) and walls are just some that immediately spring to mind.
In these situations, one of the first things I would do is change the wireless channel and/or the location of the router. If the symptoms still remain, you may need an additional wireless router (like Apple's Airport Express) which will be configured in WDS mode and act in extending the wireless range.
To change the wireless channel you'll need to log in to your router. With the BTHomehub simply fire up a web browser and enter 192.168.1.1 in the URL field. Click on Advanced... in the left list and Advanced... again. The default username is admin and the password is admin again. Then select Wireless from the Advanced submenu on the left and on the right, at the top, you'll see the following menu items: Settings, Encryption, MAC Address Control, Repeater. Ensure that Setting is selected and from the drop down menu in the Channel field select a different channel and click Apply. You may have to experiment with different channels; try Channel 11 first and work from there.

Linksys E2000 - need to expand wireless range
I just bought E2000 router today replacing my WRT300N (since it has been broken). I'm guessing that they have the same range of wireless signal, am I correct?
If that so, can I extend the range just by configuring through the router?
I'm not satisfied with the range of my signal as of the moment
Thanks a lot in advance! How far you want to extend your wireless network range?
What wireless settings you have setup on your Router? (SSID, Channel, Security Mode)?
Login to the Router setup page and under the wireless tab change the following settings.
For Wireless Settings, please do the following : -
Click on the Wireless tab
- Here select manual configuration...Wireless Network mode should be mixed...
- Provide a unique name in the Wireless Network Name (SSID) box in order to differentiate your network from your neighbors network...
- Set the Radio Band to Wide-40MHz and change the Wide channel to 9 and Standard Channel to 11-2.462GHz...Wireless SSID broadcast should be Enabled and then click on save settings...
Please make a note of Wireless Network Name (SSID) as this is the Network Identifier...
For Wireless Security : -
Click on the Sub tab under Wireless > Wireless Security...
Change the Wireless security mode to WPA, For Encryption, select TKIP...For Passphrase input your desired WPA Key. For example , MySecretKey , This will serve as your network key whenever you connect to your wireless network. Do NOT give this key to anyone.
NOTE : Passphrase should be more that 8 characters... -
Hi,
yesterday I turned on my Mac and, after typed my password to login in, I found a warning icon telling that the date and the hour is changed to 01 January 2001, 03.05.00 (I don't remember very well the hour).
So I adjust the date and the hour in the Date and Hour Setting, then I found that the computer asked to select the home wireless network as if it is the first time I used the Pc. Obviously I selected my wireless network with his password, and everything was fine.
And today is fine.
But my question is : this sudden change of date and network is work of a malicious cookie, or malware? Or a problem of the OS X?
I am very careful with downloads from internet: I download only from well-known sites (as university, documents from my friends..), but should I delete the cookies from Safari and Firefox?
Marta
PS= before I write this post, I looked for information on my computer, but I don't understand much...First, it would be helpful to know what model of computer you have.
Any time the date and time reset, it is likely because of an SMC reset. This can happen under several scenarios, the most common being that your computer lost power entirely. Current laptops have a coin battery in addition to the main battery that actually powers your computer. That way if the main battery dies, the coin battery still keeps the date and time settings. If the coin battery is bad (or if you have an older computer like an iBook or 12" PowerBook that doesn't have one) and your main battery dies, the date and time will reset.
If you have an iMac, and your computer was unplugged or if your home was without power for a length of time, it's also possible for this to happen, but it depends on the model as to the specifics.
It is not likely the cause of a 'malicious cookie or malware', Macs very rarely get viruses. -
Can I move EA6500 router out of basement to 2nd floor of my house for better wireless range?
I am having issue with EA6500 wireless range from one end of house to other. Currently, the EA6500 router is in the basement connected to my SB6141 cable modem.
Would it be possible to move EA6500 out of basement and to the 2nd floor of my home while keeping modem in the basement.
I was wondering if I could purchase a switch to place between cable modem and router which would allow me to place the router in closer proximity to my wireless devices.
I've already tried changing wireless channels and using inSSID but that has not resolved my problem.
Please let me know. Thanks. It is possible to change the EA6500 router’s location from the basement to the 2nd floor. You need to have a long cable but it should not be 100 meters long since it will cause the connection to drop. It is also advisable to have a wireless AC adapter on our wireless devices/computers to optimize the wireless features of the EA6500 router.
For your Connected Home, you may use the 2.4 GHz network to connect your wireless devices to surf the Internet and email, share files and print. The 5 GHz network is best for heavy applications including Voice over IP (VoIP) calls, online gaming, and streaming high-definition videos. -
The wireless range on my HH3 appears to have reduced. I haven't changed its position in the house. It's connected directly to the master socket. If I'm in the same room then I get a good connection. However if I go elsewhere in the house where I've previously had a good reliable connection it can drop out.
Any suggestions?you can try downloading inssider3 (istumbler if MAC) and then run it. This will show the broadcasting networks round about you and their channels including your own. If you then enter your router and change your wireless channel to a free or less congested channel.

Wireless Range Expader for WAG354G (EU)?
How can the wireless range of my WAG354G wireless home gateway be expanded? It seems not to be compatible with wireless WRE54G.
I don't think so that WAG54G should have any issue with WRE54G .....
For better connectivity on wireless network .....
Change the channel on router from 6 to 9 or 11
Under advance wireless settings .....
Becon interval sholud be 75
RTS & fragmentation threshold should be 2306 -
Safari - Since changing from Leopard to OSX when surfing the net, my screen suddenly changes to large print/icons etc. How do I change it back to normal. It is driving me crazy
That's caused by the "Smart zoom" feature of the magic mouse. It's a Double tap with one finger to zoom and repeat to unzoom.
You can turn the feature off if desired in System Preferences > Mouse > Point & Click tab -
