Sudden "clunking" sound from central location

This is the first time I've posted here, though I have looked on here for help for some technical issues, usually I've been able to diagnose my own, but this one alarms me.
I was running WoW, TeamSpeex, Adium, and Safari on my PB G4, and right about as I overflew Mojache in-game, the game froze up and a sound that went "clunk (pause) click-click" started popping up from somewhere around the midline of the computing unit. I had moved the computer slightly (no more than two feet) - it had been resting on an object on my table and I moved it to sit on the table. The adapter plug came partway out, but that happens all the time due to an old ding in the corner of the casing.
I just had my computer repaired the week before last (MLB replacement due to issues with holding the second 512 MB RAM chip in place). Other than some increased AirPort issues, nothing else has come up - even during this issue the RAM is not becoming unseated. I can start up and access Finder once in a while, but it seems to be random and things start hanging and freezing.
Do you think this is likely to be a hardware-driven issue (which would be my guess), and if so, do you have any ideas as to what it might be? I have APP coverage for about another 6 months, so I can have it repaired if it's something involved.

As louie has suggested, noises like the ones you have described are usually the sign of impending drive failure.
Sometimes people can get caught out when the drive appears to work normally again for a period of time (this period of time can vary from hours to months). However the drive will, ultimately, fail.
Your main options are to backup whilst you still can and start thinking about a replacement drive.

  • All of a sudden loud sound from the right

All of a sudden my macBook Pro is making a loud sound from the right which I think is the fan? It happens when I first turn it on so it is not too hot.
I'm concerned because my last ibook g4 had a dead hard drive in less than a year..this sound is somewhat similar to the clicking hard drive, but forgive my ignorance the hard drive is not on the right?
Is this a normal new sound? Does feel that way.
    cursed with macs.

    MissWit,
Its the fan, you got two one in each side.
I have same problem, but mine often appears when the MBP is warm or let me say been running for a while, at the same time I feel vibrations when I touch the casing or maybe housing is a better word, well the aluminium cover...
I am 99.9% sure the hard drive is located to the left.

  • Managing multiple SIDs using BRTOOLs running from Central Location

We would like to setup BRTOOLs in such a way that it can manage multipleSAP systems (SIDs).
The BRTOOLs binaries will be running from one location (We will call it Central Location).
These tools will be running on Oracle RDBMS. We would like to know if it is supported by SAP. If it is supported,  could someone lease point me to
installation document or SAP note that can show me how can we achieve that.
    Any response/feedback is greatly appreciated
    Thanks,
    Nasir Syed

    Hi Nasir,
We can use same BR*tools for multiple systems.
Point here is, we keep these tools for every system which is intact in kernel directory. This is how it works and support its local infrastructure. You won't like same process running with different IDs, confusing and power consuming, eating your resources and making difficult to trace
Now the other question is, what all function would work. Possibly, some test cases are needed to justify you propositions.
But the problem is, using it centrally is not a know or best practice. In fact, it is a more persnal custom approach which may require you to feed others how all this work in your landscape. Not everyone's cup of tea for the evening.

  • My satellite L675D-S7015 all of a sudden, no sound from HDMI

I have a satellite L675D-S7015.  It came with HDMI out, blu-ray player and all the bells and whistles. Up till a week ago the only thing I had to do to it was replace the screen after my friends kid broke it. But last week, I lost all sound to my receive. Now I have checked everything I can...made sure it was set to default....in the sound icon and by going through the realtek HD audio mgr. Made sure nothing was muted and all that good stuff. I then went into my device mgr...only to see that my ati HD HDMI driver had been replaced by some generic HDMI sound driver. I've uninstalled this several times and reinstalled the Realtek driver...only to have it replaced again.  Is there a way to stop this?  or what do i need to do to fix it?  the generic HMDI driver will play sound, but I have no control over its settings it seems.  And also...I thought that HDMI was more than just stereo?  but the realtek HDMI settings, even when I have the box checked for it to allow true dolby d and dts, it doesnt give me any other optin in setup other than a stereo one?  am I missing something?

I found this on the Microsoft websiite. (I am assuming you are running a Windows 7 machine)
Windows 7 auto update overwriting Realtek audio drivers on startup in Windows 7
And here is another thread in our forums stating the same issue.

  • Suddenly no sound from speakers and only from headphones

    Hello,
    I have a HP 8440p VQ664ET#ABU Elitebook laptop running Windows7 64bit pro.
Since today I'm experiencing the following problem:
    1) no sound is heard through speakers when headphones are disconnected.
    2) If I connect the headphones, the sounds are heard correctly through them: this is the expected behavior
I don't think it's a speakers hardware problem because I can make the speakers play sounds for one or two seconds like this: while a sound is being played, such as music file for instance, if I move up and down the headset volume cursor (regardless if headphones are connected or not) I can hear the played sound through the laptop speakers for a few seconds, after which the speakers mute again.
    So to summarize:
    1) Headphones disconnected: no sound from speakers
    2) Headphones connected: sound from headphones
I rebooted, suspended and restored without any luck so far.
I'm under the impression that there might be a problem with the headphone jack: it is like the laptop always thinks that the headphones are connected and therefore cuts the output to the speakers.
    Any clues?
    Thanks
    Sergio

Try installing the sound drivers from the following weblink:

    Hi  PhiPsiVol354
corrupted CMOS occurs when there is strange problem happen to laptop
Not necessary that corrupted CMOS prevent laptop from booting , may laptop boot successfully but CMOS not recognize the component of your laptop like sound card or video card or any other part specification .
so you need to load default BIOS setting to CMOS , but it fails to load default BIOS because corrupted CMOS needs to be cleared first before loading default BIOS.
this work (clear CMOS) is done manually by connect jumbers together inside laptop motherbaord
    OR
By using software like HIREN BOOT CD ( this is famous Repair cd ).
    follow this steps:
1-  Search internet to find and download (HIREN BOOT CD) cd image. or ask any friend may he has that cd
       ( prefered to choice v.9.7 or v.10)
2- If you download (HIREN BOOT CD) from internet ,Burn that cd image to cd with low writing speed.
3-Insert that cd into cd driver ,at laptop startup press F12 to boot from cd .
    4-Menu appear , show:
       -boot from hard drive
       -boot from cd
       -load mini windows xp
select second option ( boot from cd)
5-another menu shows with numbers browse to find (BIOS/CMOS TOOLS)
enter that section you will find many tools select from them (KILLCMOS).
6-Run (KILLCMOS) tool , it will show confirmation message ( ARE YOU SURE WANT TO CLEAR CMOS),press arrow button to select (YES) , after clear cmos done , press ESC button to exit ,then press (ALT+CTRL+DEL) to reboot system , and  immediately enter to BIOS setting by press F2 .
7-Load default setting by press (F9) and save change and exit (F10).
8- the system restart and enter to windows .
9- If process failed to solve the problem , Repeat it again.
    Good luck
I hope this will solve your  problem.

  • What to do when suddenly no sound from usb headset

I haven't use my linux in the past 3 days and when today I logged in I noticed I don't hear anything. I checked some other apps, but no good.
It works when I unplug my usb headset - I mean the built-in speakers do.
In pavucontrol I saw the lines moving so there is sound, I just can't hear it. I tried changing the device for output and the application currently in use, but nothing.
The only suspicious thing is that I have a 3rd device called "LADSPA Plugin Multiband EQ on Internal Audio Analog Stereo". I guess it's related to the pulseaudio-equalizer I installed about a week ago, but after doing that I had sound, I watched some movies and I had no problem at all.
Having no better idea, I removed pulseaudio-equalizer, restarted my notebook, but I still have that device.
I wanted to check the volume levels in alsamixer, but I don't have that, because it usually scr*ws up the volume levels, I only have installed what's said in the pulse wiki, but it's unrelated now, I guess.
My linux is fully up do date and I don't see anything unusual in my rc.conf.
What should I do? Where to look for the solution?

    This problem is bizarre.
Basically - I have an audio interface connected via USB, then one day i get the message 'usb device disabled drawing to much power....'
So i tried a few different cables, and 1 cable worked fine.
Now all of a sudden, the problem is back - the cable that was working fine is now not working fine.
I've tried 8 USB leads, reset the SMC, reset PRAM, etc etc......
All the 8 USB leads i have work fine with other stuff, but as soon as i plug this audio interface in, it doesnt see it. The interface is fine because i've tried it in another computer.
I've lost a lot of faith in apple products over the last year or 2. It seems like theres always some sort of bug/problem. This will be the end of the line for me now. I just can't trust the quality or reliability of their products anymore.

  • Suddenly no sound from pavilion dv5. How to get it back?

I seem to have done something that told my HP pavilion dv5 that I didn't want any sound.  What now?

    Hi,
The easiest way to solve this may be to run Windows System Restore.  If you have Norton Internet Security installed, you will need to disable Nortons Tamper Protection as shown in Step 2, on the link below.
    http://us.norton.com/support/kb/web_view.jsp?wv_type=public_web&docurl=20091112171719EN&ln=en_US
Once you've done this, shut down the notebook.  Windows System Restore is usaully best run in Safe Mode.  Tap away at f8 as you start the notebook to enter Windows Recovery Console.  Use the arrow keys to select Safe Mode and hit enter.  When this has loaded, from the Start Menu, click All Programs, click Accessories, click System Tools and launch System Restore.  Pick a restore point at least 24 hours before the Audio issue and then proceed with the restore process.  When complete, Windows will reboot as normal.

  • Help! Suddenly no sound from home theater speakers!

I bought a Sony KDL 46W5100 TV and the BDVE300 Home theater system at BB. I have always had these two hooked up directly to
each other with an HDMI cable and the digital optical cord. There are no other components involved.
We have always had surround sound to the HT speakers when the television speakers are set to 'audio system'
II am in NO WAY an audio/video expert, but I've had to mess with the settings here and there
after one of the kids reset something and I've always been
able to return the system to proper operation.
I am not sure what happened this time, but I cannot get the home theater speakers to give me any sound when in TV mode or
the BD/DVD mode. Theater mode does nothing for the sound either. I know the speakers are connected properly as they work during the 'test' and also when using the FM radio. I also know I am not on 'mute'
I do get video when playing a DVD or blu ray but no sound. I borrowed a BVD E770W, hooked it up and ended up with the same result.
This would lead me to believe that I have some rogue setting in my TV or maybe my HDMI cable is bad? I'm not sure about the
cable as I still have video through it.
I've re-read all my manuals, searched the forums online and I found nothing
Can anyone give me some advice here?
My family would greatly apperciate it

Try unplugging the power cord to TV and Surround receiver for 15-20 minutes. Plug back in and retry. If test tone & tuner have sound, your receiver is working. This will reset your data lines and hopefully restore operation. If not, and the DVD & TV sound hookup is coming thru the TV, the firmware in the TV may need to be updated found here:

  • Suddenly no sound from Real Instrument

    Hey all! thanks in advance.
We've been using Garageband 1.1.0 for awhile now as an easy Voice Over tool. Recently we reformatted our computer and now Garageband doesn't recognize our microphone.
Here's what I've tried so far:
-The microphone DOES work outside the computer
-I tried a different port in the G5 and a new firewire cord that connects to our recording interface
    -I tried a different computer (a G4)
-I tried the muting, volume, pan, channels, etc.
    -The monitor IS on
*The track is a No effect voice track, channel 1, mono (which is what we've been using all along)
    Here are the specs:
    G5 10.3.9
    Garageband 1.1.0
Shure SM57 dynamic microphone is connected to the M-Audio Firewire solo recording interface which is connected via firewire to the G5.
    Thanks for your help!
    G5   Mac OS X (10.3.9)

Did you reinstall the m-audio's drivers. Does the mic show up in System Preferences > Sound > Input. Did you choose the interface in Garageband Preferences. Is the track enabled.

  • TS2634 Suddenly no sound from headset on calls.  Speaker does work when activated.

Why can't I hear incoming calls on headset, yet I can when on speaker.  Was working just fine for the past year.  Did I do something that needs to be undone?

Try disconnecting the headphones and then adjusting the volume, does it say headphones?
There might be something in the headphone jack, maybe lint, dirt, or something else in there.
Take a look at this Apple document for more information -> iPhone: Can't hear through the receiver or speakers

  • Suddenly my event library in iMovie 11 is empty.  I have tried deleting the plist, importing clips from multiple locations (to see if they show up in the library), re-installing iMovie, and re-installing Mountain Lion. Help??

Suddenly my event library in iMovie 11 is empty.  I have tried deleting the plist, importing clips from multiple locations (to see if they show up in the library), re-installing iMovie, and re-installing Mountain Lion.
I was working on a project, when all of a sudden the event library went blank.  There are no devices showing in the left column, only "last import" and "aperture videos".  There are no video clips in the editing window.  I have "Show: All Clips" selected.  I've tried "group events by disk".
When I have a Project open, it plays just fine.  There are no yellow triangles saying "source clip is missing".  Yet, again...nothing is in the event library large editing window.  So, it seems the data is still there, but invisible.  This is true with all the projects, and all the external devices I've experimented by plugging in to see if their video clips show up in the event library.
I have tried to import new movies, and iMovie responds as normal...looking like it's importing, then "generating thumbnails", then it makes the "ding" signalling that the import is complete...but nothing shows in the event library.  I've tried importing movies from the harddrive, from quicktime, and from an external drive.
I have searched the forums, and found many users with a similar, but not the same, problem.  For them, it seems the "go to users-library-preferences and delete iMovie plist" has solved their problem.  This didn't work for me.
I uninstalled/reinstalled iMovie, I even have re-installed Mountain Lion (from a last-ditch effort suggestion from Apple technician).
HERE'S AN INTERESTING DETAIL:  After almost 5 hours on the phone with Apple, I decided to cut my losses and take my project to another Mac I have.  I'm working on a project, for work, that is critical that it's completed by tonight (whoops), and all my video is on an external drive.  So, I plug in the external drive to Mac #2, open iMovie, and everything is looking fine.  I continue importing some files I was converting, through Wondershare, and suddenly (whether or not this has to do with the importing, I'm not sure), the SAME THING happened to Mac #2!!!!  I can't believe this.
Does anyone have any suggestions?  Have you ever heard of this happening?  Could it have to do with the files I'm importing???
I apologize if my language is confusing.  Obviously, I'm not an Apple genius-person!  I hope I've provided all the information you need.
    Mac #1 is a 27" desktop, mid-2012, software up-to-date.  Mac #2 is a 24" desktop, about 4 years old, OSX 10.7.5

    I'm adding more information:
in Finder, my iMovie folders are all visible and accessible.  When I click on a clip from iMovie Events folder, Quicktime opens and plays the clip.  ALL my video is not missing - it just isn't showing up in the Event Library!
This happened all of a sudden, while I was working on iMovie project (on both computers).
All my Projects are intact, and play when I open them.
