Sudden decline in battery duration?

Purchased macbook pro in October 2007, so i've had it for about six months. Battery regularly held up for about 4-5 hours during school usage (typing, surfing, researching), and nothing heavy. However, just within the past two days i noticed significant drop-off in my battery duration. My battery currently only lasts for about an hour to two hours doing the same things (as indicated by timer on the top right of the screen). Just wanted to know if this regularly occurs for anybody else as well, because it seems quite abnormal to me to lose almost 50% of your battery duration in one day. Other symptoms include: fans spin much faster and louder, cpu heats up quite high. Again, just to emphasize that this is just for light usage.
I saw that others with related problems included information about their batteries, so here it is:

Hi dereklok: You are on the right track, but at the bottom of the Activity Monitor screen, click on the CPU tab instead of the System Memory tab. When that one is open, click on the CPU tab at the top to sort by that column. Also at the top of the Activity Monitor dialog box make sure that All Processes is shown. This will show you the processes and the amount of CPU activity.
Sorry if I stepped on your answer Kane

No problem, you're filling in the op on what I left out. : )

Try holding down the sleep and home buttons for about 20 seconds. When you see the silver apple it's rebooting and just let it do its thing.

  • N8 Sudden Decrease In Battery Life

I have had my N8 for years and have loved it every minute.  Through ^3, Anna, and Belle i've always had 2 days of battery life with average use (power saving off).  Last week however, my N8 suddenly had battery issues.  There were no app, firmware, or setting changes preceding.  So it's not anything obvious draining it.
When I charged the phone overnight (wall charger), I'd wake up in the morning and see Nokia Battery Monitor showing that the phone stopped charging prior to 100%. For example it would state: "Charged xHr yMins ago to 95%" or "98%".  Occasionally it would also show up at 100%.
With this also came a drastic sudden drop in battery life.  I would see approximatley 14-15h of life, and now I'm down to about 9-10.  When looking at NBM stats, it would say "Background" used >100% of battery life at times.  Under background would be things like Messaging, Music Player, and Notes, which is completely wrong.  See below:
Here's what ive tried so far:
    1) Use AppStop to kill all background apps, no effect.
    2) 7370 hard reset to clear everything and go to factory settings.  Wiped phone, mass, and card. No effect.  Used AppStop to get to bare minimums.  No effect.
    3) Reinstalled Belle via Suite.  No effect.
    4) Let battery drain until it shut off, then used wall charger while phone stayed off overnight. Nope
    5) Let battery drain down til shut off, then used USB charging. Nothing. Repeated this hoping it would "recalibrate" battery levels.  Nothing.
    Nokia Energy Profiler Stats:
Ran this for about 20 mins to get some stats:
    1) Idle draw with screen on is about 0.20-0.30W, 15% CPU consumption.  Occasional spike up to 30%.
    2) Idle with screen off is barely 0.02W, 3-4% CPU consuption.  Occasional spike.
    3) Based on the power consumption, it still estimates that I should get 40+ hours of battery life on a full charge.
Battery lasting less than a day?  I feel like an iPhone user.  I get that I could always turn 3G off or power saving on and stretch it a bit more, but that's not a fix, it's just a Band-Aid over a bigger issue.   Anybody have ideas?  Should I buy a new battery and replace it?

Updates:  So I bought a brand new genuine BL-4D hoping it would fix the problem.  Nope, didn't happen...though the battery seems to now charge to 100%.   EIther way this leads me to believe it's not  a battery problem.  Unless there's an issue with the charging circuit, this I"m back to a consumption problem.
So I tried another belle refresh and a "Factory Settings" restore from the menu, didn't help.  Not sure what to do now, as Battery Monitor doesn't really point me to anything that's killing the battery.  So I decided to do more research with Energy Profiler and ran it for approx. 50 mins to see what the consumption deal is.
I exported the data as a .csv and cleaned up the data.  I've attached the power and current graphs.  In both graphs you see that there's very low consumption immediately after starting the measurement and locking the phone.  Afterwards, there are two distinct idle consumption values, approx 42mA (.16W) and 130mA (.49W).
An average 42mA power draw would give me approx 28.5h battery life (1200mAh/42mA=28.57h).  However an average power draw of 130mA would result in a 9.2h battery life.  The actual average of all my Current data points is approx 99.9mA, giving me 12h of battery life, which is about what I'm seeing at the moment.
I know my idle consumption is lower with 3G off and even lower with power saving on, but I haven't gotten the chance to record these measurements yet.
I'm still not sure what's causing a high idle power consumption, any ideas?

  • Why the price of the ipad mini 2  will suddenly decline?

why the price of the ipad mini 2  will suddenly decline?

It's quite common for the 'old' model to be discounted after a new one is released.
If I recall correctly a similar thing happened to the full sized iPad 2 and 3 and 4 when their new models were released.
If you're a retailer and have a warehouse of 'old' models you would want to get those out to make room for the new ones. Same thing happens with computers and tv's and cameras, even cars.

  • Why my Laptop close suddenly and a battery quickly ends?

    Hi,
Why my Laptop close suddenly and a battery quickly ends?
I contact a charge with a laptop for 20-25 min and than the battery became full.
But after five to ten minutes I see the percentage of battery go very quickly to 70 % and than to 50% suddenly shut down. Again I contact a charger to laptop. This problem in laptop started for 12 days.
Tell me what should I do? I'm using laptop every day to study, is that reason?
My friend told me maybe the battery need to change; I bought my laptop in 2012! It is not a long time. Mac OS C Version 10.6.8
I'm not an expert in electronic devices, but Do you think that there is another reason to close it suddenly or laptop battery quickly ends?
Is Mac Center provides service "change a battery" in the same day?  Or I have to send my laptop and waiting a long time?

What you describe sounds like a hardware issue. Unfortunately, you'll need to get that checked out by Apple. If you have an Apple Store near you, make an appointment with the Genius Bar and take the machine in for evaluation.

  • HT1414 anyone noticing a decline in battery life after downloading ios7????

anyone noticing a decline in battery life after downloading ios7?

I have an iphone 5. Ios 7 is a disaster for battery life! It used to drain about 1% every two hours, 5% over night roughly (not being used). Now it is draining at double the rate. It drained 10% over night and it isn't even doing a thing. I think something is clocking up usage when it's idle.
    Screen brightness is minimal.
Background app updating is restricted to one app which isn't running the majority of the time.
Dynamic wall paper and other stupid stuff is all turned off.
I can't turn off the stupid clock animation. I wonder if working out how that is displayed is the issue???
It shouldn't be draining at 1% per hour when not even being used.
Favourite locations is still switched on.
Is there any benefit in turning off wifi and using 3g data only? I had the issue before that having 3g enabled meant double the battery drain so I only used it when I was out.
Ipad mini seems fine though. Battery life is same as last ios6 ie about 14-16 hours use.
I now have caret running to find out what the rogue thing is. The majority of the time few apps are running at all.
My general average usage is 12-15% per day if lightly used and 25-45% if it is moderately used. Now the phone is draining at 25-33% a day when lightly used!
Beats me why an ipad mini which is advertised at up to 10 hours on wifi nearly doubles that and the iphone which is advertised at the same rarely reaches it. I usually get 8 hours of active use if I'm lucky. Now it's more like 5-6 which is hopeless.

  • Sudden Crash on Battery

I have started having sudden crashes while on battery. The battery itself has 3 lights (of 5), and the energy thing says there's a couple hours left. The computer just turns off. Dead. It will not restart. But when the power cord is connected, the computer restarts normally.
    Any idea what causes this?
    I have an original 15" 2.16 GHz 2GB MacBook Pro, OSX 10.4.10

Most likely you have a bad battery. There are known issues with MBP batteries (and two separate replacement programs for them). Go to Utilities > System Profiler and click on Power in the list.
Under Battery Information you will see several parameters:
    Battery Installed: Yes
    First low level warning: No
    *Full Charge Capacity (mAh): 6538*
    Remaining Capacity (mAh): 6443
    Amperage (mA): 197
    Voltage (mV): 12602
    *Cycle Count: 4*
The lines in bold above are the important ones. If your full charge capacity is less than 4400 mAh (for a 15" MBP like the OP, or less than 5000 mAh for a 17" MBP like the recent poster in the thread) the battery is failing and needs to be replaced soon. If your cycle count is less than 300 your battery is failing prematurely and Apple will replace it for free - just go into an Apple Store or call them up. They extended the battery warranty for all Core Duo machines to two years from date of purchase, as stated on this page:
    http://www.apple.com/support/macbook_macbookpro/batteryupdate/
    Hope this helps...
Ps. My cycle count is 4 because Apple replaced my battery less than a month ago. If your numbers look ok, post back and we'll look at other solutions (such as an SMC reset).

  • Sudden change in battery performance

Hello. I am having trouble with my battery. I charge my phone every night, and ever since the last software update (2.1) have had great performance. This performance has changed this week, as my battery is already drained today at 230p. (Last week I could go all day and not get the low battery warning.) I have not made any calls today and have only used the ipod for ~30 minutes and email for ~5 minutes. 3G is turned off. Wifi is turned off. Bluetooth is turned off. Has anyone else seen a similar sudden change in performance? Is there anything I can do to fix this problem? I could understand losing charge if I was using the phone, but since it's just sitting idle in my pocket I cannot figure out why I would have such a low battery.
    Thanks

Something just got stuck in memory processing.
    Try a reboot (described below).
Think of it this way, the iPhone is more of a computer than a phone. It suffers from being a new OS and nobody can deny there are not bugs and memory leaks. The longer left running, the more things start to fail or slow down (I have had the iPhone since day one of original phone and I am just speaking from my experience). Thus I equate it to like when Windows95 came out...not sure of your age or if you remember those days...but back then it was a running joke of how many days you can keep Windows 95 running before you had to reboot. I am sorry to say but the iPhone is the same way right now (but getting better with a few hiccups back during the 2.0 release). So for me, I reboot daily when I leave in the morning and take it off the charger. By doing so I rarely see any lag or problems.
    A reset/reboot is:
    Go to Home Screen
    Press and Hold Home Button
Keep holding and press and hold Lock Button
    Keep holding Both
You will see Slide to Turn Off (Don't let go to slide, just keep holding)
The phone will turn off (in time, but screen will look like it has some white lines)
    Keep Holding
When you see the Apple Logo, you can let go.
Turning off via the Slide to Turn off while good and fine to turn off, is more like the Sleep Mode on a computer. Thus any locked up issues in memory remain when you turn back on. A reboot as described is like doing a real Turn off and Turn On on a computer.
You may also wish to read this tread about reboots and odd application behavior.
