Sudden decrease in HDD Space

Hello all
I have bought a new late 2011 MBP 13' with 500GB HDD space. After trying to partition the disk, Disk Utility displayed "Shrinking Hard Drive". The application then became unresponsive and I had to force quit. The problem is the space on the HDD had suddenly disappeared, my mac says there is a 380GB sized file (or files) falling in the 'other' category.
I have used OmniDiskSweeper, but it has failed to find the sudden loss in my space.
Please advice me on what to do.. This is the only major problem which I have had...
Will it be a good idea to use Command R (reinstalling OS X Lion) and does this format my HDD.
Thanks in advance.

That sounds like you tried to make the OSX partition too small -- OSX needs extra space, usually at least 10-15%.  Go back and delete the new partition, then expand the old one so there's more room.

Do not worry about that category.  It's a "catch-all" for everything that's not in one of the listed ones.   See Lion's Storage Display.
If you think there's still too much stuff on your disk, see Where did my Disk Space go?

  • Sudden decrease on rmbp SSD

    Hey guys,
So a strange problem - the space on my 250GB SSD (15" rmbp, late 2013) just suddenly decreased from about 120GB free, to 30GB. It happened sometime today, though cant be sure exactly unforunately.
Ran verify disk and repair disk in Disk Utility (some permissions needed fixing, but nothing really came up) - no change.
Ran Disk Inventory X and got this strangeness: As you can see the initial window (top) says 36GB free and used 196GB - then after running the scan it says that the SSD is 137GB full - which should leave about 110GB free - not 36GB
    System information shows this:
Finder shows this - showing 88GB free
And finally, Disk Utility shows this - showing 38 GB free
So what the heck is going on? Before, I always had around 120GB free. Didnt install anything, didnt really change anything. Only noticable activity was that I downloaded a couple of things on torrent (legally ) and installed the Civilisation game..about 5GB. Other than that I dont know.
By the way also ran the hardware test - all is fine.
    Pls help,
    Thanks,

Found the issue and its solved now - from this thread: https://discussions.apple.com/thread/3235790
    From one of the users:
I have successfully reconciled the difference between the reports in DU and Finder.
I momentarily disabled Time Machine, and the .mobilebackups folder was then cleared of Local Snapshots, a function of Time Machine which saves incremental changes between actual Time Machine backups.
Apparently Finder sees the accumulated data as "free space", because it will be overwritten if need be. However, Disk Utility sees the usage and subtracts it from its calculations of free space.
Once you turn Time Machine back on, Local Snapshots will resume, and your free space will diminish until you hook up a Time Machine drive and perform a backup, or turn off Time Machine to clear the "cache".
There is also a Terminal Command for disabling Local Snapshots, but I think it beyond the scope of this thread.
BTW, This is only an issue on MacBooks, as Desktop Macs don't use Local Snapshots.

  • How to reclaim hdd space after compacting VHD in hyper-v

I have a virtual machine installed on Windows Server 2008 using Hyper-V.  The VM is using Windows 7 as its OS.  I had originally set the size of the dynamic disk to 40 GB but soon learned that wasn't large enough and expanded it to 110 GB.
Now I an no longer running the VM and need to reclaim some of that space while keeping the VM intact.  I have run the compacting wizard, and it says the disk is now 24 GB with a maximum size of 110 GB.   Yet all of that space is still allocated
for the VM's use.  How do I reclaim the empty space?
I have tried to go into the VM and shrink the current volume, but it says I don't have enough space to do so.
I appreciate any suggesions as I really need to reclaim some of that hdd space.
    Thanks!

    Hi InScribeKBriggs,
    >> I have run the compacting wizard, and it says the disk is now 24 GB with a maximum size of 110 GB.
Please ensure that you are using correct wizard , only "Inspect disk..." will show the information
“the disk is now 24 GB with a maximum size of 110 GB” .
Please use "Edit disk..." , before you do this I would suggest you to execute
disk defrag in  windows7 VM first then shutdown it then execute "compact" in "edit disk..." wizard.
Byt the way , it is a dynamic disk and the current size is 24GB means
the size on physical disk is 24GB , maximum size means it can grow up to 110GB this can not be decrease .
Also please refer to following link to compact the dynamic VHD :

Not necessarily. I'd suggest downloading and installing the "combo" update. That's a combination (thus the clever name) of all the updates to Leopard since it was first released, so installing it should fix anything that's gone wrong since then, such as with one of the normal "point" updates. Info and download available at: http://support.apple.com/downloads/MacOS_X_10_5_8_ComboUpdate Be sure to do a +Repair Permissions+ via Disk Utility (in your Applications/Utilities folder) afterwards.

On Oracle Metalink site, there are many documents which says that Oracle 32 bit software works on 32 bits OS and 64 bits software works on 64 bits OS. Official support is only in those combination....
So there is no good way to help you in your case-XE is 32 bit application with hard codded compiled libraries which most of them would not work on 64 bit OS.

  • BSOD followed by a lost of 12gb HDD space

    Hello,
I've encountered BSOD saying "IRQL_NOT_LESS_OR_EQUAL". Soon after restarting, I've noticed that I have a lost of 12GB hdd space.
This is not the first time. Last week I have another BSOD, which was related to my nvidia driver, and soon after restarting I had a lost of 10GB hdd space.
I did some research online and someone suggested that it might be due to the size of the dump file. I've check the dump file and it is only a mere 292KB!
Could anyone please let me know how to recover the 12GB lost of hdd space as well as solving the "IRQL_NOT_LESS_OR_EQUAL" problem?

These crashes were related to memory corruption (probably caused by a driver).
Please run these tests to verify your memory and find which driver is causing the problem.
If you are overclocking (pushing the components beyond their design) you should revert to default at least until the crashing is solved.
If you don't know what it is you probably are not overclocking.

  • Sudden increase in memory space

We have developed an application using the Hyperion 9.3.1.
We are trying to load data and the data load itself is taking lot of time.
Again, the memory space is getting increased drastically (almost to 100%).
We see lot of page files being generated.
What can be the reason for this sudden increase in memory space utilization.

you should consider the folllowing factors for sudden increase in memory space
1.Minimize the no of hierarchies otherwise it leads to increase in the size of aggregated data and slows down view selection
    2. remove fragmentation
3.Compact the outline to remove the records of members that we have been deleted
4.create transparent partition if neccessary which leads to enable write-back partition.By doing this we can reducethe size of the Database and reduces calculation time.
5.use compression if values are grouped together in consecutive members on dimensions or hierarchies rather than spread throughout the outline with lots of
    #missing data between values.

  • Seem to be losing a lot of HDD Space - How to get it back?

Seem to be recently losing at least 40GB of HDD Space when only 10GB should be gone?
How to reset Mac to get it back to normal - recently had 130Gb now down to 91GB, cleared at least 30GB of hdd space also, seem to have done nothing!!!

  • Lightroom uses huge amounts of HDD space (temporarily) from my main drive when exporting?

I'm having a HUGE issue with Lightroom using massive amounts of HDD space on my main drive when I'm trying to export photos.
The photos are on external HDD and are being exported to the same HDD. The space being used on the C: Drive (main HDD) is upwards of 19GB, while the exported photos are only taking up a very small fraction of that size once saved...
What gives? This is causing Lightroom to fail most times because it is running out of space on my HDD while it exports.
As soon as a close Lightroom the C: drive goes right back to where it was as if nothing happened at all.

I have and the same thing happens. I'm wondering if it's an issue with my
    main drive being an SSD.
I've gone so far as to direct link the AppData folders (local and roaming)
for Adobe to my secondary drive thinking it was temporary cache, but the C
drive still gets used and it drops by about 1GB a minute during export.

  • T61 Windows 7 hiding half my hdd space

Hi I hope someone can give me some advice.  I have a t61 6459 CTO which originally had vista premium OS.
I loaded windows 7 on the main partition quite a while back and it's working fine but for some reason my hdd shows that there is only 45 gigs free from 86 gigs.  I've deleted everything...the windows fole\der is 8.5 gigs, SWTOOLS is another 2 gigs but I can't see what is taking up the other Approximate 30 gigs.  I've turned on the "show hidden folders and nothing big is iding there.  Am I missing something???
When I go to Computer Management and then Disk Management I can see the 86 gig partition and I can see the recovery partition which is 6.8 gig.   This leads to my next request for help.  Of course thinking if I just  restore to factory condition my hdd space might come back but of course?@#$%! installing Windows 7 RC for some reason destroys my abilitie to use my recovery partition.....huh?  Was that necesary???
So a while back soon after I started this escapade with Microsoft, I tried to search here to find out how to get my vista back by somehow getting this machine to boot from that partition but I could only find bits of info suggesting there was some kind of app somewhere online that would fix the boot thing.  I tried to find it but had a hard time.   Today I'm back here searching again but not finding anything really to help me.
Can anyone tell me how or where to find the info I need to get my t61 to recover to the original operating system which is on my 6 gig partition.  And can anyone tell me where my missing hdd space is?
This machine is updated with all the lenovo updates very recently.
    Thank you for any help!!!!

    Hi,
I'm using rMBP 15" early 2013 with OSX 10.9.5. My problem is (for a while) OSX doesn't show correctly my available HDD space. It is internal 256 GB SSD. How can i know that it doesn't show correctly? Because my Disk Utility says 69.64 GB free space but my Finder says 92.14 GB (Huge difference) ! Also my PC partition tells about different story but i don't care it (Who cares silly billy Windows? ) My guess is Disk Utility says correct.
This problem started with Diablo III. I installed it (13 GB download for a patch !!! c'mon Blizzard) and after that my Finder starts to lie to me (Before installation, both Disk utility and Finder says 101 GB approx.
    Any idea?

  • Emptying trash decreases hard disk space ?!

I downloaded some music files from limewire and didn't like it, so I deleted the files from my shared folder where they were stored and from ITunes, then emptied the trash. Emptying the trash actually decreased the available space on the hard disk (from 26GB to 24,75GB) instead of increasing it. Does anyone know what happened and how do I find those files in order to delete them permanently and regain my original disk space? Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated. Thanks, Puni.

There's a nifty little application called WhatSize that will list everything on your HD by size. A great little application to help manage where your HD space is going.

  • Minimum ram and hdd space need for windows 7

What is the minimum of ram and hdd space memory to use with windows 7. Is the windows 7 faster than vista on the same machine ? thansk
    Nothing is impossible

BillWindows said: (...) I bought 4g ddr2 for (...) I think most people should be able to afford an upgrade.
Sorry, but I disagree fundamentally here. While it is true that RAM prices have come down since XP was released, there are many machines out there for which you can't just buy regular RAM around the corner. Either because the systems were designed so that only a certain amount of RAM can be used (e.g., 128 MB on one of my VAIOs) or because they use a special socket or because you are not allowed to open the case or for whatever other reason you can think of.
I am not necessarily complaining. But I frequently hear that Microsoft wants to sell Windows 7 upgrades to XP owners. So if Microsoft wants to upgrade XP owners to Windows 7, they should better make sure that technical requirements are less or equal to those of XP.
And no, it's not given by nature that newer OSes always need to become fatter, slower, and more RAM hungry: have a look at Mac OS X which actually improved performance over the past releases, even on older machines.
Also, before you flame me, I'm not just caring about "museum age" computers. I bought a netbook just months ago and it came with 1 GB of RAM. Warranty is void if I open the case. So I can't "just" upgrade to more than 1 GB RAM.

  • Lost HDD space after reinstall of OS X

I recently purchased a Mac Mini (Mid 2011) used. The previous owner failed to restore to factory settings. Being a good neighbor, I looked for a way to restore and rid the Mac of their info. I pressed the (command + R) shortcut and then it had a world on screen. It checked the hard drive and components, I assume from reading, then went to a small menu. I read that I would use disc utility and erase option. I did. Set the correct formatting. Then I go back to the small menu. I didn't have wifi connected so next it prompted me to connect. When I clicked off the menu, it disappeared. I could not see it again nor could I see wifi option. I read it was at the top right so I click, click, click, and viola wifi option. Obvious at this point the screen is not all showing. I'm on a Sony Bravia 32". Now with wifi connected, I began searching for where the menu may have hidden. No luck. I was forced to shut off and try again. (Command + R) again. Small menu is back after the world pops up and checks everything again. I click install Lion and it checks with Apple and asks what HDD. I originally had 500.11 GB. I checked it via the guest account prior to my trying this. It may have also been seen during the process mentioned. Then it gives an HDD with only 499.87 GB. I think OK maybe it's an updated larger version of Lion. So I proceed. Half way through a 7 hour stint, my wifi signal gets knocked out. It prompts to reconnect and then start again. The problem after that is the status bar is all blue and no download time left anymore which one would think its indicating its finished. I knew better than that so I left it for what I think was still maybe downloading. Another 7 hours later. It is still running. I make the decision to abort and try again. This time taking same steps, but with a 12' Ethernet cable. No more disconnects. Now it goes through same process then for hard drive selection it says 498.22 GB. So obviously with no other choice, I select it. Now for the questions.
    1. What happened to HDD space?
    2. Can it be recovered? If so, please do tell! Without $100 in additional software.
    3. Did I seemingly succeed in removing previous owners info?
    4. Why does downloading via Ethernet have the same speed as wifi?
    5. When I complete reinstall can I register this product with Apple?
    6. Will making a USB drive allow the same small menu and options for restoration of the Mac?

First off, you should run the Safari 4 beta uninstaller that came with Safari 4.
Secondly, if Safari 3.2.1 doesn't work, it probably is because some network application you previously installed hasn't been tested with it. Did you install any cell phone or PDA syncing software recently? The Hotsync typically is a plugin for cell phone or PDA syncing software.
