Sudden decrease on rmbp SSD

Hey guys,
So a strange problem - the space on my 250GB SSD (15" rmbp, late 2013) just suddenly decreased from about 120GB free, to 30GB. It happened sometime today, though cant be sure exactly unforunately.
Ran verify disk and repair disk in Disk Utility (some permissions needed fixing, but nothing really came up) - no change.
Ran Disk Inventory X and got this strangeness: As you can see the initial window (top) says 36GB free and used 196GB - then after running the scan it says that the SSD is 137GB full - which should leave about 110GB free - not 36GB
System information shows this:
Finder shows this - showing 88GB free
And finally, Disk Utility shows this - showing 38 GB free
So what the heck is going on? Before, I always had around 120GB free. Didnt install anything, didnt really change anything. Only noticable activity was that I downloaded a couple of things on torrent (legally ) and installed the Civilisation game..about 5GB. Other than that I dont know.
By the way also ran the hardware test - all is fine.
Pls help,
Thanks,

Found the issue and its solved now - from this thread: https://discussions.apple.com/thread/3235790
From one of the users:
I have successfully reconciled the difference between the reports in DU and Finder.
I momentarily disabled Time Machine, and the .mobilebackups folder was then cleared of Local Snapshots, a function of Time Machine which saves incremental changes between actual Time Machine backups.
Apparently Finder sees the accumulated data as "free space", because it will be overwritten if need be. However, Disk Utility sees the usage and subtracts it from its calculations of free space.
Once you turn Time Machine back on, Local Snapshots will resume, and your free space will diminish until you hook up a Time Machine drive and perform a backup, or turn off Time Machine to clear the "cache".
There is also a Terminal Command for disabling Local Snapshots, but I think it beyond the scope of this thread.
BTW, This is only an issue on MacBooks, as Desktop Macs don't use Local Snapshots.

When typing in an ActionScript file, there are auto-complete options that pop up with choices based on what you have typed, like when doing import statments. Mine have suddenly decreased for an unknown reason to me. Any ideas on how to get ALL the options back? Here is a screen shot with my limited choices...

More info that might help. • Logic X with rMBP SSD 16gb RAM insane CPU problem.

Hi, just got a brand new MacBookPro retina SSD 2.3 Ghz Intel Core i7, 16 gb RAM. The reason I bought this was because I was told it shall solve efficiency problems when working with LogicPro. Well, it didnt. It acts 10 times worse than my older MacBook. A few instances of native synths and plugs completely freak out my CPU. Just having Logic open eats up 56% of my CPU. On my older MacBook (with 8gigs Ram and a regular HD) I could run huge sessions with no CPU spike ever!!
This is insane, why is it happening? I updated to the latest version of LogicProX, my processing threads in Logic are set to 4. Buffer size set to minimum an I still get annoying latency and unecceptable CPU crackle - like when I was working FL studio on a crappy PC a decade ago... All that, on the latest "bad-***" laptop there is out there.... Is there any hope to work professionaly with this machine, or did I just waste a lot of money?
P.s. I use a Metric Halo 2882 firewire interface connected via Thunderbolt. I tried to listen to the session after swithcing to built-in, same problems occure...
    H e e e l p  ! ! ! !
    Thanks : (

my processing threads in Logic are set to 4. Buffer size set to minimum an I still get annoying latency and unecceptable CPU crackle -
    If you didn't mistype.....
You have set up things completely the opposite to what you need for your setup.... and so, to help prevent the issues...
    Go to LPX's audio prefs... and try the following;
Your i7 has 8 cores not just 4.. (4 real and 4 virtual) so set according...
Having the I/O Buffer size set to minimum increases the loads on the system, not decreases.. so change that setting... If you have it set to 32, increase it to 64 or even 128 or 256 samples... and test with each change to see how you get on....
Also what do the actual latency figures show.. (Just below I/O buffer size...) after each change...
Finally, check what you have set the Process Buffer Range to.... If it's set to small.. set it to medium and test... and then to large and test.... and again see how you get on.

  • IBook G4 WiFi range suddenly decreased?!

My iBook G4 has decreased wifi range all of a sudden. any ideas as to why this would be happening? is the airport card dying? any help is good help!

Well then, there's a very good chance the antenna isn't connected all the way which would explain getting a signal, but a weak one. When you push the antenna on, it HAS to click twice. Since it happened to me, I know it's easy to assume that it is connected properly, but click one more time with a little force, or take it off and start over. 2 clicks.

  • Battery life suddenly decreased and consistently getting the "clock" symbol for up to 10 or more minutes at a time !

I recently noticed a dramatic decrease in my Blackberry Curve 9300's battery life. Several days ago, it went from lasting all day to only lasting a few hours. I have also noticed that I get the "clock" symbol appearing on the screen even if I'm not using the phone --- and it stays on the screen for up to 10 minutes or more at a time ! I will look at the phone to get the time and I see that it hasn't updated for 10-15 minutes and the clock symbol is running the entire time. When it finally does disappear, the phone seems to work like it always has ---- but I'm worried that I've either picked up a virus or have somehow activated something that is draining my battery and memory resources rapidly. Any thoughts or suggestions will be greatly appreciated ! P.S.. I'm a relatively new Blackberry user --- switched from iPhone about 6 months ago......so still learning about how the device works and how to troubleshoot ! THANKS !
p.s.  I have looked to see if any apps are running in the background and found nothing out of the ordinary.

    Hi CollinGCC78,
It sounds like you have been on the right track in troubleshooting this issue. If you are still having issues, you may want to double-check the steps outlined in the following article, in order if possible (apologies for replicating any steps you have already taken):

  • Iphone 4 sudden decrease in audio quality and right earphone not working

This is really strange --- my iPhone 4 suddenly stopped playing music in the right headphone - in all headphones and even in my car AUX jack. Also, the sound in the left headphone is remarkably muffled and low quality.
But if I pull the jack out a tiny bit, right before it comes out all the way, sound plays normally through both headphones for a split second.
I tried the cotton swab and rubbing alcohol, tried compressed air.. any ideas what could be the cause? I'm beginning to think it might be like a connector or something deep in the jack got loose maybe?
    Thanks for the help!

  • Sudden decrease in graphic quaity

Earlier today I was using Safari to download a short video from MSN when my MacBook locked up. As I was trying to to quit Safari, and stop the download, by pressing command, option, period (plus a number of other key presses), my display suddenly changed, for the worse. Poorer quality for sure. Some of the issues I've noticed are: black boarder around Safari window; some letters are red in otherwise black text; the icons in the dock are poor graphic quality; colors on desktop are way off, as are the graphics on the icons on the desktop; in other windows, such as system preferences, many of the options are not in view, such as the red, yellow and green dots in the upper right hand corner. I have checked the resolution and display profiles, and all seems ok. I have looked at colarsync utility but did not know what to do. Is there a way to revert to default settings? Any help would be great.

You might try to reset the PRAM. Some of the graphics controls are stored there.

  • Hard drive suddenly decreases space using programs

Yesterday I ran into problems with my hard drive as I was working away on photoshop. It came up with errors saying the scratch disk was full and I saw that my disk space had run to 53KB left and then to 0. I deleted some files closed PS and reopened only to find it decrease once again. I shut down the mac and it started with 80GB, opened PS again and it lost 20GB straight away. This seems to happen when I'm opening programs now and running them... any ideas?
Running Snow Leopard if that makes any difference.

    Hello,
How much RAM & free Disk space do you have also, click on the Memory & Disk Usage Tabs.
Open Console in Utilities & see if there are any clues or repeating messages when this happens.
In the Memory tab of Activity Monitor, are there a lot of Pageouts?

  • Sudden decrease in bass - had to increase bass level dial to get the same amount as before. W

I currently use my Inspire T7700 speakers with a Creative Audigy 2 ZS soundcard.
    Today, everything was working fine.
Suddenly, there is a drop in the bass. I check settings and nothing is changed. When I did the "speaker tests" in the THX Setup Console all of the speakers functioned correctly except the woofer.
When I increased the bass level dial, I finally got bass produced out of the speaker.
Why is it requiring the bass level to be increased fully to get a bass when before all I had to have it was at about 40% to get the same level of bass?
Like I said, no settings were changed. This just "happened" in an instant.
    Thank you!

It should also be pointed out that whilst BTw state that applying interleaving shouldn't reduce your line speed, it does reduce the maximum line rate achievable (your Attainable Download rate) which then effects your the Line rate if and when your FTTC modem resyncs, less noise = less interleaving needed = higher attainable rate , more noise = more interleaving = lower attainable rate.
I do find my latency to be quite high from time to time. I've been playing games for many years and have had some extremely poor connections which have produced some horrid pings, but although it isn't too bad the majority of the time - about 20-40ms - it can hit 60-70ms, which isn't acceptable. It can be 15ms at times, but I haven't seen my ping in-game as I've gone from PC to console. I've never had any issue in-game online yet.
Sods law. I just check my connection speed and I got a 3998ms ping. Lovely!

  • Sudden decrease in HDD Space

    Hello all
I have bought a new late 2011 MBP 13' with 500GB HDD space. After trying to partition the disk, Disk Utility displayed "Shrinking Hard Drive". The application then became unresponsive and I had to force quit. The problem is the space on the HDD had suddenly disappeared, my mac says there is a 380GB sized file (or files) falling in the 'other' category.
I have used OmniDiskSweeper, but it has failed to find the sudden loss in my space.
Please advice me on what to do.. This is the only major problem which I have had...
Will it be a good idea to use Command R (reinstalling OS X Lion) and does this format my HDD.
    Thanks in advance.

That sounds like you tried to make the OSX partition too small -- OSX needs extra space, usually at least 10-15%.  Go back and delete the new partition, then expand the old one so there's more room.

Do not worry about that category.  It's a "catch-all" for everything that's not in one of the listed ones.   See Lion's Storage Display.

  • N8 Sudden Decrease In Battery Life

I have had my N8 for years and have loved it every minute.  Through ^3, Anna, and Belle i've always had 2 days of battery life with average use (power saving off).  Last week however, my N8 suddenly had battery issues.  There were no app, firmware, or setting changes preceding.  So it's not anything obvious draining it.
When I charged the phone overnight (wall charger), I'd wake up in the morning and see Nokia Battery Monitor showing that the phone stopped charging prior to 100%. For example it would state: "Charged xHr yMins ago to 95%" or "98%".  Occasionally it would also show up at 100%.
With this also came a drastic sudden drop in battery life.  I would see approximatley 14-15h of life, and now I'm down to about 9-10.  When looking at NBM stats, it would say "Background" used >100% of battery life at times.  Under background would be things like Messaging, Music Player, and Notes, which is completely wrong.  See below:
Here's what ive tried so far:
    1) Use AppStop to kill all background apps, no effect.
    2) 7370 hard reset to clear everything and go to factory settings.  Wiped phone, mass, and card. No effect.  Used AppStop to get to bare minimums.  No effect.
    3) Reinstalled Belle via Suite.  No effect.
    4) Let battery drain until it shut off, then used wall charger while phone stayed off overnight. Nope
    5) Let battery drain down til shut off, then used USB charging. Nothing. Repeated this hoping it would "recalibrate" battery levels.  Nothing.
    Nokia Energy Profiler Stats:
Ran this for about 20 mins to get some stats:
    1) Idle draw with screen on is about 0.20-0.30W, 15% CPU consumption.  Occasional spike up to 30%.
    2) Idle with screen off is barely 0.02W, 3-4% CPU consuption.  Occasional spike.
    3) Based on the power consumption, it still estimates that I should get 40+ hours of battery life on a full charge.
Battery lasting less than a day?  I feel like an iPhone user.  I get that I could always turn 3G off or power saving on and stretch it a bit more, but that's not a fix, it's just a Band-Aid over a bigger issue.   Anybody have ideas?  Should I buy a new battery and replace it?

Updates:  So I bought a brand new genuine BL-4D hoping it would fix the problem.  Nope, didn't happen...though the battery seems to now charge to 100%.   EIther way this leads me to believe it's not  a battery problem.  Unless there's an issue with the charging circuit, this I"m back to a consumption problem.
So I tried another belle refresh and a "Factory Settings" restore from the menu, didn't help.  Not sure what to do now, as Battery Monitor doesn't really point me to anything that's killing the battery.  So I decided to do more research with Energy Profiler and ran it for approx. 50 mins to see what the consumption deal is.
I exported the data as a .csv and cleaned up the data.  I've attached the power and current graphs.  In both graphs you see that there's very low consumption immediately after starting the measurement and locking the phone.  Afterwards, there are two distinct idle consumption values, approx 42mA (.16W) and 130mA (.49W).
An average 42mA power draw would give me approx 28.5h battery life (1200mAh/42mA=28.57h).  However an average power draw of 130mA would result in a 9.2h battery life.  The actual average of all my Current data points is approx 99.9mA, giving me 12h of battery life, which is about what I'm seeing at the moment.
I know my idle consumption is lower with 3G off and even lower with power saving on, but I haven't gotten the chance to record these measurements yet.
I'm still not sure what's causing a high idle power consumption, any ideas?

  • Fix for MacBook sudden decrease in speed/freezing?

    Hi,
I am a long time user of apple products, one of which being a 2009 MacBook. Recently my MacBook has been slowing down (including on start up) and often getting the spinning color wheel (which most of you might know about already). Just a few days I started up my computer and I noticed this clicking noise repeatedly. At this point my computer was already getting very slow.
As my computer progressively got slower, I noticed the clicking noises occurring more often. Now it has come to the point where I can not start up my computer at all. When I press the power button the grey screen pops up; however, it does not show the grey loading bar usually displayed under the apple logo. With this in mind, is there any way that this problem can be fixed? Is there anything that could be slowing my computer down in the first place?
If this makes any difference to your answers I have upgraded the RAM from 2gb to 4gb (third party). Also, I have upgraded the software of the MacBook to Snow Leapord. I regularly use the apps that where originally there along with some other downloaded apps (tell me if you need specifics). I have many documents, files, and downloads on my computer as well. I regularly empty the trash so that is not the problem here. It is fully charged so lack of battery is not a problem either. Thanks for your help!

A couple of things may have happened. You could have run out of system resources. You could be nearing the capacity of your hard drives. To further diagnose your problem you need to take a look at your memory settings and, if you are using MP rendering, make sure that you have all CPU's accounted for. I've seen a bunch of setups where 8 cores are available but 6 or 4 are being used and even more setups where the Actual CPU's reported are 0. Then you need to make sure that your drives have plenty of space and that they have recently had a health check. If all of those things look good then you could try purging your ram every few frames. You'll find the settings by going to the AE preferences and holding down the shift key before you click General. At the bottom of the list you'll see a new section called Secret. Click there and purge every few frames.
If none of that works then we need to know everything about your composition, your render settings, your version of AE down to the last decimal point, and anything else that might have an effect on your project. It's hard to diagnose a patient if they won't put on the gown, if you know what I mean.

  • MacBook Pro wireless range has suddenly decreased

I've had my MacBook for almost a year now and the wireless range has been fine. However, a few days ago the wireless started going a bit dodgy - it would sometimes stop working and website would not load. But a quick restart sorted it all out.
Then, since yesterday it has stopped working completely when I am in my room (where it previously worked find.) But when I move closer to the router it works....
Does anyone know any fixes or would getting in contact with apple be the best option?
    Thanks in advance,

(Sorry if this has come up before, there are so many problems about networking on the internet I could not find one with my specific problem.)

    Thanks for the reply.
I changed the channel and then I did a proper reboot of my router ( from within the router settings) and it seems to have fixed everything.
