Sudden difficulty importing wmv files

Hi, I'm using a trial version of CS4, am under the gun, have strong working computer knowledge but limited technical knowledge, and am new to video editing. But I had a great guy teach me the basic ropes of video editing in CS4 and I'm doing a pretty great job of creating clips from downloaded wmv files and have about 7 clips of 12 done for a presentation I need to deliver today. Suddenly, however, I can't get the final wmv file to load into Premiere. The only difference I can see between the two prior files that imported fine and this third one is that the two prior files show on my desktop with the wmv "filmstrip" icon, and this third one shows with the "first frame" icon.  All 3 wmv files were downloaded from the same source, are about the same size (250MG), etc. I've tried dragging and dropping, importing from menu, and right-clicking. Nothing works. I deleted and re-downloaded the third just in case it was corrupted. But for some reason, every time I try to import this third file, CS4 gives me the message "Not Responding," and then Premiere crashes. I really can't stop working on this now, and I need clips from this file. How can I get it in there? Thank you.

Well, WMV is a streaming, delivery-only format, and not meant for editing. However, some will Import and edit, to a degree, in PrPro, with some major processing overhead required.
Also, WMV is a "wrapper," in that it can contain all sorts of "stuff." Likely, your one bad WMV has something that PrPro cannot handle, or does not like.
Open up Windows Movie Maker (should be installed on most Windows machines), Import that WMV, and drag it to the Timeline. Export as DV-AVI w/ 48KHz 16-bit Uncompressed WAV. Import THAT file into PrPro, and edit away.
With WMV files, conversion is always the best workflow.
This ARTICLE will give you some background on "wrappers."
Good luck,
Hunt
[Edit] I see that you got things sorted out, and that's good news. The above will give you some of the info that you seek now.

  • How to import WMV file for use in adobe programs, especially After Effects and/or Premier?

How to import WMV file for use in adobe programs, especially After Effects and/or Premier?

I have the latest adobe creative cloud and i'm using Mac 10.8.2
My client gave me a wmv file that she wants some people blurred out in the background but when I go to import the media, it's greyed out. I'm assuming that After Effects will be the best solution for this, but maybe there is another way.
I can purchase a video converter and convert it to .mov but that costs extra money that I don't want to spend just to do this one project.

  • Top half of video is missing on imported WMV files. Running  CS3 & Win XP Professional

Top half of video is missing on imported .WMV  files. I'm running CS3 Adobe Premier Pro with Win XP Professional OS
    Hi all,
I just installed my Adobe Premier Pro CS3 for the very first time. I then IMPORTED a WMV file into the Project Frame and  then Dragged & Dropped it into the Time Line. All the windows (or Frames) Project Frame, Source Frame and the mini-Project Frame show this video with the top half missing. I’m running Win XP Professional with the latest Service Packs installed.
    Please Help.
    Thanks
    Derek

After Searching the net for a while here, I found a solution to the "Half Screen" problem!
The half screen video problems seen while trying to play WMV files in my CS3 Adobe Premiere Pro program seems to have been due to a recent Windows software Security update made to it’s Windows Media Player programming. As soon as I removed that update, my WMV files now show normally within Adobe Premier Pro.
If you wish to uninstall this Windows Patch / Security Update on Win XP Machines:
No#1 Prior to removing/un-installing the file, shut off "Windows Automatic Updates" and set update preferences to manual. Thus in the future you can select which Updates you want to instal (and which one not to instal)  *remember to ignore the KB2834904 update in the future! That is at least until Widows fixes this Security Update / Patch.
    A) Go to "Add/Remove Programs" in Control Panel
    B) In the Add/Remove Programs, check the "Show Updates" box located at the top of that window
    C) Scroll down to "Windows XP Software Updates" and within that section, scroll down to "Security Update for Windows Media Player" KB2834904 (mine was dated 7-10-2013)
    D) Click on the REMOVE button and re-start your system.
If using Win 7 Operating System: to remove this Patch / Security Update the file to remove is: KB2803821 - In Windows 7, go to "Add/Remove Programs" in Control Panel, click on the "View installed updates" link in the left sidebar, search for KB 2803821 and click REMOVE.
    Good luck everyone!

  • Importing WMV files into iTunes/Converting files

    1) How can I import WMV files into my iTunes library? I know iTunes can't import protected files. So is there no way to put those videos on my iPod?
    2) I tried to converting a Movie Clip by right clciking on it and pressing 'Convert Selection for iPod' when I imported it. But there's no audio. What's the problem?

  • Any advice on importing wmv files into FCE?

I'd like to bring in some wmv files into a sequence in FCE. Of course this format is not directly supported. i'm having a rough time finding a third party app to use on my mac that would convert wmv files into something importable such as .mov. Any suggestions? Thanks.

flip for mac is a quicktime plug that works in all qt based applications. with it, you can open a wmv in quicktime and export it as a .mov
While I use it the other way round, to export wmv's for the web it will do what you want.
be aware that wmv is a highly compressed format and transcoding it, even to a higher size file for example dv will look horrible.
wmv is meant to be a delivery codec, not an editable one.

  • When importing WMV files, I only get the first few seconds of my movie.

I'm trying to do some color correction on a wedding video.  The video was captured using Windows movie capture software and saved as a WMV file.
The file is about 700MB and 50 minutes long.  When I import the file it the Project tab says the duration is only about 25 seconds.  When I preview it, still only 25 seconds will show up. It's doing this for every video of the wedding that I import.
Any ideas on how to fix this?

What version of AE and with what compression settings were they captured? Premature stream endings usually points to VBR encoding, which AE doesn't particularly like. The files from Movie Maker may also contain program-specific data such as edit markers, which also could be mis-interpreted by AE. Check such things and perhaps try differnt settings. Failing that, simply use VirtualDub and similar tools to convert to conventional AVIs or otehr suitable formats.

  • Import wmv file to the project -Premier CS5.5. I got a half screen black!!

Hi I tried to import a wmv file to the project as i do everyday with Premier CS5.5. I got a half screen black!! Is anyone know the reason for that?  Thanks!!!

It appears that Microsoft has issued the fixed update:
    https://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/security/bulletin/ms13-057
    See the "Update FAQ" section:
"Why was this bulletin revised on August 13, 2013?
Microsoft revised this bulletin to rerelease the 2803821 update for Windows 7 and Windows Server 2008 R2.
The rereleased update addresses an application compatibility issue in which WMV encoded video could fail to properly render during playback. Windows 7 and Windows Server 2008 R2 customers should install the rereleased update."

  • Importing .wmv files

    Dear community, please help.
I need to import a bunch of .wmv video files into my project on Mac-based Premiere CC Pro, and just realized this format is not supported...My frustration is hard to describe. Please HELP! Thank you so much! With best regards. Mike.

    Mike,
You were in the "Hardware" forum. I moved it to the Premiere Pro forum. That's where you are now.
BTW, Macs do not support .WMV files. It is a Windows format. Take a look at the plug-in "Flip4Mac" to get this functionality into Mac. It's been this way for quite some time now: Windows Media Components for QuickTime - Overview - Telestream Flip4Mac
    Thanks,

  • How do I remove the watermark when importing WMV files into Premiere Pro?

There is some metadata that adds a media player watermark to my WMV files when I import them into Premiere Pro. I can play the original WMV videos with out the watermark on VLC, but the watermarks show up when I play them on Realplayer. So I know there is something that reads the watermark into the video file and I want to know if there is a way to turn it off in Premiere. I can convert the wmv with Any Video Converter and there is no watermark, but I'd like to avoid this step if I can.

Unfortunately my client doesn't know how the videos were created. My guess is that they were created using some free screen recorder. Most of the videos are recorded PPTs.
I've checked the microsoft site, but haven't found anything relevant.
    Thanks for the suggestion.

  • Importing .wmv files from adobe photoshop elements

My mother-in-law created a slideshow with adobe photoshop elements 6.0 and I can get into into a .wmv file but can not import it to imovie. I saw another post about changing the code on the PC but can't seem to find a place to do that on the program. This is a one time thing and I don't want to pay for a conversion software that I will never use. Any ideas? I thought about just burning a DVD of the slideshow and then trying to import it that way, will that work?

I saw another post about changing the code on the PC but can't seem to find a place to do that on the program
In the slide show editor, Output>PDF would be your only other option, and you would lose music, transitions, etc. if you choose that.

  • Why won't Lightroom 2.3 suddenly not import RAW files?

Why can't I import RAW files into Lightroom 2.3? I've imported them for years, until today, after I installed a Canon  Pixma MX860 multi-purpose printer. Would this affect Lightroom? Now I get a Lightroom message: "The files could not be written." Tried to import from Canon 5D on a CF card and from a Panasonic Lumix on an SD card many times. Same result. I can pull the RAW files individually off the cards into Photoshop CS3 RAW window and adjust them, but can't on Lightroom. It won't automatically import the files and won't take them manually. Am using a PC with XP Professional. Any thoughts?

Are you sure it's the same problem as that user had?
What error message are you getting when you try to import a raw file?
    What camera?
    What version of LR?
    What computer and operating system?
Did your ability to import raw files just suddenly stop, or have you never been able to import them?

  • Help importing WMV files with 4 audio tracks....

    Hello,
I am using a PC to run a robot show. The show runs off of WMV files recorded with 4 audio tracks.
The "front" audio tracks are the left and right chanels for sound.
The "rear" audio tracks are the signals the show runs off of.
(If you want to see the show... it's here http://www.yorkmiss.com/Curtains.wmv
I run the audio files using the windows media player and as you can see... it works fine.
However, I would like to use the I-tunes player since I can then controld the show remotely using my I-Touch.
The problem is that every time I import one of the audio file into I-tunes, it converts it to a new type of file that "blends" the front and rear chanels of audio together.
I've tried every different option in the import prefrences list - and they all have the same result.
Does anyone know a way of playing the files "as-is" without converting them, or is there a way of converting them I do not know about?
Here's an example of one of the files:
    http://www.yorkmiss.com/ShowbizKylesmom_504.wma
Any help or suggestions would be welcome and appreciated!
    Thanks in advance,
    Beth

Yes, I understand that now... but is there a way to convert to those file types while still preserving the 4 seperate audio chanels?
    Thanks, Beth

  • Problems importing .wmv file as an asset to CS3 Encore DVD

If anyone has any insight, it would be very much appreciated. I tried to find the answer by looking at this forum and google and I haven't been able to find any information. When I import the .wmv file on a mac to Encore DVD CS3, I am getting the following error message"The software that's used to decode the media is not available on this system. Installing the correct decoders for the files you are working with may help correct the problem."
Unfortunately this error message doesn't tell me where to look to resolve this. I have filp4mac installed and I am able to view .wmv files. So any insight on how to correct this issue would be very much appreciated. Take care - Julie

If your asset is very very large (like over two hours long) then Encore might insist on scanning the entire asset before importing it.  You should notice your hard drive light on steadily, or a lot of disk drive activity from Encore using a program like Process Explorer.

  • Cannot import WMV file (wmv2 standard codec)

All the help files say that Windows Media WMV files can be imported into Premiere Pro CS5, but I have a very standard WMV file using WMV2/WMA2 internal codecs and it will not import into Premiere Pro CS5.  I spent a lot of money on my Adobe products and an expensive program like this should be able to do what it says it can do.  I'm on a Mac but nowhere in the help files does it say that WMV is only supported on a Windows PC.  Also if you respond saying that WMV is a "delivery format" that will not be helpful- Adobe claims to support it for import, regardless.
How can I fix my issue with Windows Media WMV important in my FULL, NON-trial, fully paid, full legal, expensive version of Premiere Pro CS5.  Please feel free to email me via [email protected] because I have no idea how I'll find this post after I post it.

It was not meant to be anything but useful for future purchases.
One should research software, to make sure that it fits their needs, rather than purchase it, and complain that it does not work, as one would have hoped it to.
On the other side of the street, there are Mac-only CODEC's, that will not install on the PC. That is something that PC users have been fighting for a fairly long time. It is not Adobe's fault, but a dissimilarity between the platforms. Though they do seem to be getting closer together, there are still some differences between them. When an editor hits those differences, the trick is to find a way around them. Sometimes, for the PC user, it means having a Mac-user Export in a different format. The same holds for the Mac-user. There are many shops that have both platforms, so these types of problems are solved internally.
Adobe was aware of these potential problems, and made note of them. This is where it is highly incumbent on the purchaser to inform themselves, and become aware of platform differences. Adobe makes note of the formats/CODEC's that are "Mac only," as well.
Todd's suggestion to file a Feature Request is a good one, however, I think the "solution" will be for MS and Apple to get together and work out a way for each platforms' CODEC's to install and be useful on the other. I do not anticipate that Adobe can rewrite all the MS CODEC's for the Mac, and vice versa, but perhaps I am incorrect, and they are doing just that.
    Good luck,
    Hunt
