Sudden drop of speed - internet vitually unusable ...

Hi all
I had a look round the service status page and saw nothing for my area, so wondering if it's just me, but last night as I was playing my usual evening online poker, I basically lost all connection.
Now, I'm on Total Broadband Unlimited, have a Home Hub v2, and have done since February. Am in the WD17 area, and nothing has changed from when it's been working fine all these months.
So, as I was merrily playing along, the 54.0 Mbps connection suddenly drops out to..... 1.0 Mbps. And stays there. Do a Hub reset - no improvement.
So come back from work today to see if there's any improvement - and marginally. It's now randomly fluctuating between 2, 11, 15, 18 & 54. Still pretty much unusable.
Any ideas?

Those figures look like wifi data rates not adsl

  • Sudden drop in speed

So I went to bed last night with the Internet running around 20 - 35mb down happy days, however I woke up this morning and it has dropped to bellow 1mb down (around 0.7mb) this is an almost impossible speed to use the Internet,  I have no idea why this has happened I have tried everything from resetting the router to seeing if my computers wireless adapter is playing up (it is not) and nothing, it has taken me all day to try and work out how to fix this problem but with my Internet running so slow it is taking to long, I did the BT speedcheck and apparently the drop in speed comes from within my house (great that helps me in no way ) I emailed BT but to no luck as they still haven't got back to me, can anyone offer any help or advise if you have come across this problem too and have solved it.

You need to run a BT diagnostic speedtest to find out what your IP profile is.

  • Awful drop in speed...

For the last three days i have suffered an awful drop in speed from an already slow connection. The speed has gone from an average of around 1.2mbs to being lucky if i reach 0.4mbs. This makes even the simplist things difficult. I can no longer even watch the BBC iplayer the speed is that slow. This has been going on for a few days at first i gave BT the benefit of the doubt and thought the issue would just go away, but it hasn't. I'm not impressed with my speed when the connection is working correctly so to say i am NOT impressed now is a complete understatment. I have checked the BT Service Status and found no recent problems in my area so i presume everything is working as it should. So what would explain my sudden drop in speed. Any help would be appreciated.

    Hi,
Sorry to hear about your problems.  It sounds like you may have been hit with a bit of interference.  This might be a failing bit of electrical equipment in your house, or in your area, that is introducing electrical interference onto the telphone line.  Lots of things can cause it (see here).  You can try a few self-help measures, but please be aware that it could be 2-3 days before you see an improvement.
The bottom line is if the interference is stopped, the line will become more stable and your speed will rise.  If the interference persists, the situation will stay the same or worsen.
Run the BT Speedtester regularly and keep an eye on your IP profile.  If that continues to drop, it is a sign of a continuing problems.
It's much easier to convince BT you have a problem if you have got a bit of evidence to support what you are saying!

  • Sudden drop in transfer speed

I have been trying out a WRT1900AC router for about a week and just developed a MAJOR drop in speed from the router to the computer while doing a file transfer:
This thing has been sending files to and from the router's esata and USB3 port at over 50 MB/s until just now.
I can still write to the drives attached to the router at 50MB/s + all day long. Getting files from the drives have suddenly dropped to 300Kb/s on the esata and the USB3 ports
Tried rebooting/powercycling the router, disconnected the drives and reconnected them, same result.
    Anyone else run into this?
Funny, I just got done posting in another thread how fast this thing moved files to and from external storage. Now this,,,,,,
Maybe the universe is telling me not to keep this router?

    1. What file sizes do you usually transfer? What are the file types?
For testing I used larger files (IE: ISO files, larger zipped files, etc.) rather than just copying folders or small files.
    2. Are the files being transferred to and from your computer and a storage drive (hooked to the WRT1900AC)?
Files were moved all over: from a WD Mycloud (hooked up to 8 port gigabit netgear switch) to my computer. Also have a Toshiba 1TB USB3 drive plugged into the WRT1900AC USB3 port and an older WD 2 x1TB enclosure hooked into the WRT1900AC via the eSATA port. For testing I moved files all over the place: From the Esata to the computer, to the USB drive, to the WD Mycloud and back again. Also mixed up going from point A to B, then from point C to point B, etc. In all cases the slowest speed I get is 50MB/s + with some transfers topping out at 90MB/s!!!
    3. If it's a storage drive, does it have USB3 ports as well?
    Yes
    4. What is the link speed of your computer?
    Wired Gigalan
Routers do not usually need to be rebooted every now and then. They should be running 24/7. My guess is, the wired or wireless adapter may have adjusted speeds consequently dropping file transfer speeds.
Agreed. I can count on one hand how many times I had to reboot my last router over the 2+ years I had it.
Heres the other thing: the need to reboot is not just associated with file transfers. I get the "cant connect with the WRT1900AC" message just going into the user interface from time to time as well as being unable to see storage folders in Windows explorer from time to time. In these cases I can still go online, surfing and doing whatever. The router (according to the Smartlink page) just seems to disappear. Which doesnt make sense since if the router cant be seen online, how is it that I can still go online?
Anywho, I still have this week before I lose the ability to return/exchange it at Best Buy. Will see how things go.
And thanks for the reply and suggestions,,,,,,,,,,

  • BT Inifinity - Speed and Latency - Sudden Drop in ...

    Hi All,
I hope someone can help me here, I'm really just looking for some advice and an opinion.  I have had BT Infiinity for around a year now, and, barring the first few weeks, i have had a stable connection of around 68000kbps down (sync) and 20000kbps up (sync), with a usually low ping of around 5ms to most UK Servers.
The last few weeks i have had a sudden drop in sync to around 54000kbps, showing attainable as 62000kbps, up speed has also dropped a few meg. to top this off, the interleaving depth has gone from a solid fast-path that i used to have, and was completely stable. to a depth of 1050 (down), up is strangely still on fast-path though.
do you think i have a line fault or is something effecting noise on my line? The biggest bug bear for me about this is the latency, as I am an an avid online gamer, when I'm not working or entertaining my 1 year old son.
Before i even touch a gaming server, i seem to have a ping of around 20-35ms, which as other gamers will know, is not good.
i have included a few graphs for the ones who know more about VDSL than i do, as my FEC errors seem unusually high.
    Thanks in advance peeps :-)

    Hi john014,
Thanks for posting. Have you tried the quiet line test? Dial 17070 option 2, it should be quiet but if you’re getting any noise on the line we’ll need to look into that for you.
If it’s all clear can you try posting a few tracerts i.e. one to the game and one to the BC site for comparison. I’m sure we can help with this.
    Cheers

  • Broadband speed suddenly dropped

For the last 7 months we have had good BB speeds of  around 6Mbps this has suddenly dropped down to under 0.5Mbps.
I have reset the Home Hub 2 & had it plugged directly into the test socket on the master unit which has not changed anything.
I ran the BT Speedtest which gave the following:
Download speedachieved during the test was - 414 Kbps
For your connection, the acceptable range of speeds is 50-500 Kbps.
    Additional Information:
    Your DSL Connection Rate :5824 Kbps(DOWN-STREAM), 448 Kbps(UP-STREAM)
IP Profile for your line is - 500 Kbps
I did notice the blue "b" led flashing yellow a lot last eve, far as I know this means the Hub  is updating itself
    Any ideas?
    Thanks
    Dave
    Solved!
    Go to Solution.

    Hi Welcome to the forums
If you post the full stats from your router
For homehub – type 192.168.1.254 into your browser
Navigate to ADSL Settings or use the A-Z at the top right of the home page and scroll down to ADSL Settings and click on it
Click on More Details and then post the full results.
Have you tried the quiet line test? - dial 17070 option 2 - should hear nothing - best done with a corded phone. if cordless phone you may hear a 'dull hum' which is normal
your ip profile is low this is due to disconnections and providing you can maintain a stable connection with no hub restarts for the next 3/5 days your profile should increase automatically this will then improve your download speed
Then someone here may be able to help and offer more advice.

  • Extreme Base Station suddenly dropping internet connection

I have an Extreme Base Station (802.11n Fast Ethernet) which has been providing wireless internet and printing to two imacs pretty flawlessly for several years. It seems to be a fairly simple network. DSL modem (to WAN port) and USB printer cable plugged into back of Base Station.
Several days ago, the Base Station began dropping connection to the internet every few minutes. If I connect the modem directly into the computer, I have no problems with losing connection. So, I began looking for solutions online and have been trying everything I could find to do. I've scoured the forums here, and everywhere and read a bazillion posts.
I've done a hard reset of the Base Station, I've tried different channels, I've unplugged, waited ten minutes, and replugged in a myriad of sequences, including unplugging both the modem (Zhone/Paradyne 6381-A3) and Base Station overnight. The only thing I haven't done is roll back the firmware (currently 7.4.2 I believe). I'm still experiencing the same problems and am at my wits end. I've spent hours now trying to fix it and need to do other things like shop for groceries and vacuum! So, I'm posting, in hopes someone might be able to point me in a more productive direction.
Is it possible the Base Station hardware is failing? What are the signs and symptoms? I hate to spend another $179 and still have the same problems.
    Thank you.
    Most kindly,
    ---Susan

    Dear Bluenova - ( +or other interested readers+ )
I know that this reply is two months since this topic was initially posted.
This is a longstanding Airport Extreme ( AEBS ) problem that's been noted since 2006-2007.
It has been an ongoing issue for me -AND- I continue to experience it even after recently upgrading my AEBS.
I finally called AppleCare in mid-Sept. and opened a formal problem case report.
As of today (Oct 15, 2010) I still have an open & unresolved case with AppleCare.
The problem has been escalated twice -and- is now referred to Engineering Dept for research & resolution.
I was curious what steps or actions you have taken -and/or- if you still experience the problem.
    _Readers Please Note_

  • Sudden huge drop in speed

Yesterday I had infinity installed and after the engineer left I did a speed test that showed my download speed to be 37Mb+ with and upload speed of 1.8Mb after sorting out the vision box which I had to disconnect all the power to the PC and BT routers I did a speedtest and find that the speed has dropped from 37Mb+ down to 1.62Mb with 0.51Mb upload I know there are variations in the speed especially during the first 10 days but I certainly didn't expect to drop the download speed by 95%
Are drops in speed like this normal or what?

    Hi wildthing666,
Sorry to hear of the problems you've been having. If you are still having the same issues, please post up a bit more information on your setup (i.e. how many computers you have and how they are connected to your Homehub etc.) along with the results from a test at www.speedtester.bt.com and we might be able to identify what the problem is.

  • Dramatic drop in speed. Help!

Ok, so on friday after a long and painful time with AOL.. I had my BT Infinity option 1 package installed. Everything was fine and the engineer measured the speeds that were coming through the house. On Friday it was 38mbps. He said that it will always stay on 38mbps and would never get lower, only higher. So yesterday afternoon I did a speedtest which told me that my download speed had dropped to 25mbps. I thought ok, not bad.. but why the sudden drop? Then later yesterday night, I measured again.. and it came up as 11mbps, and today I keep getting between 7mbps and 9mbps. What the heck is going on?

Ok, I'm not sure if this is wireless or not. I took the black and yellow cable out of the bt box and plugged it into my hub. Then inserted the other end into my laptop, I guessed I was wired up. So this is my speed through ethernet cable:

I note with irony how you will see that someone tried to contact me...but that isn't the case. I contacted them. By phone because that was what the "Chat" customer service person told me to do. This is classic case of one hand doesn't know what the other is doing. When I do get a live person on the phone ....Basically....verizon says there is a "line problem" and I wait for three days and the speed gets better for about a week, and then the speed drops off.
They can't deliver what I am paying for. I don't have a phone, I pay for high speed internet because FIOS is unavailable. Currently as I type this....speed test says I am .9/.27...the modem tells me 1.5/.4 but it drops as well. What is the issue, Verizon?
In addition someone on Verizon's end says...someone will call you in a few hours...which never happens. Never. More like in a day or two. If that.

  • Connecting to High Speed Internet - I am not a Crook!

Ok, first of all, you're going to have to hear me out. I think technically what I'm trying to do is illegal, but in the real world I think its perfectly justified...
I have cable internet at home that I pay for and enjoy. My computer is the only computer in the house and thus the only one using the service. Right now I am house sitting with my girlfriend and have brought my computer with me, thus leaving my cable internet hookup behind at home unused. I'm connecting to the internet here with a dialup connection account that the owners of the house have and the slowness is driving me crazy.
I thought that if I brought my cable modem with me and hooked their cable into it I would be able to get access to the high speed internet - which I think I am justified in doing since I am paying for the service and it is going unused at home. The only problem is it doesn't seem to be working. The cable modem has a green light for "cable" but nothing for "data", and everytime I try to go to a website it either asks me to dial in to the dialup service or work offline.
At home I know that we have the same cable for our TV as we do for my internet because in my room where the computer normally is I have a small TV (for viewing with Premiere) that we also pay to have a cable connection into and the cable guy merely split the cable to go both into my computer and my TV.
Is there something they would normally have to switch on outside to make the cable work for the internet as well? I'm not interested in messing with that, I'm just wondering why its not working here.
    Darcy

Oddly enough, I was in paying for my cable and asked (in a roundabout way) about the possibilities of hooking up at another house and what was the deal about splitting the line and getting basic cable without paying for it.
The answers I got were basically...
When you sign up for cable modem, you are renting a port, that prot can go anywhere, it's not stealing if you only use it from one place and can only get detected if it's on in two places.
When you subscribe to cable modem, the basic cable is inherent in the signal. In my case (comcast), you can opt for a package that includes basic cable and the internet service for the same price as the internet port alone. They know people split the cable and hook it up to their TV, some installers go ahead and do that as a service. If the installer runs two cables into the house, it's simply split upline somewhere, it doesn't really accomplish anything.
It was almost like talking to the limo driver in the Wayne's World movie. Too much information...

BT Got back 24hrs later and said there was a fault between exchange and our house which was now fixed, however, no explanation whether this was the cause of the previous problems. Also, yesterday evening HH4 rebooted and after checking the event logs a new PPoE session had started. Called them again and they told me BT would still be carrying out checks on the line - whether that was the case or not I'm not sure as that happened at the start of all this three weeks ago (a new PPoE session started during middle of night) prior to this everything was fine since installation on 31st July.
Also ip profile has dropped from approx 38Mbps to 34Mbps since installation and no-one can explain why.
