Sudden Dropped Frames Problem with 720p24 material

After sailing along for months with perfect operation from Final Cut Pro, editing 720p24 (I'm still running 5.0.4), I have encountered a mysterious hangup that I can't seem to solve. It probably began shortly after I was doing a test on a new project and mistakenly used a 44khz sound file rather than a 48khz. That project ran fine for a couple of days as I played with it, then abruptly began to drop frames at very particular points. I trashed the sound file and reimported it as a 48khz file and that seemed to fix things for a day or two. Then, to my utter horror, when I opened a very large ongoing project that I needed to tweak, I found that the dropped file problem has corrupted my entire FCP operation. I have tried changing various settings, such as unlimited RT, and trashed the preferences as well, but none of the straightforward cures seems to make a difference. I've also looked at all the suggestions in the Apple dropped frames article at [docs.info.apple.com]. I have never had a problem with dropped frames prior to this.
My scratch disk is a raided SATA drive with plenty of space to spare. This setup has worked flawlessly since July. I have jumped around over the past 10 days from work on old SD projects to 720p24 projects and have been changing settings here and there to accomodate this. Nothing else seems to have been changed that may account for the glitch.
I have not reinstalled the software.
Anything that comes to mind as a logical next step would be most appreciated!

Yes during panning or zooming I can see that frames are dropping in the stats panel.
I'm encoding at 500kbps video + 48 audio, outputting only one stream.
The content in the input monitor shows exactly what the cam is seeing, with the pan and/or zoom correctly displayed. On the output monitor side the action will freeze momentarily when frames are dropped. Then the display will skip to the point where no more frames are being dropped.
The native frame rate for the cam is 29.97, but as an output, averaging in the dropped frames the rate may drop as low as 27 or 28fps according to the stats panel. The difference being the number of dropped frames.
FMLE is installed on a Dell Studio 15 with 4 GB RAM, which I would think would be plenty adequete.
Thanks for your response.

  • Final Cut Pro 'dropping frames' problem

Hi. I have a macbook, version 10.6.8 - I am trying to use Final Cut Pro version 6.0.6 and am having problems with the 'dropping frames' issue. I know you can get rid of the message, but does anyone know how to solve the problem, as when it comes to exporting the film I won't be able to? Is my mac too small/old to use this version of FCP? If so, is there anything I can do to rectify that? (that doesn't involve buying a new mac!)
    Any suggestions would be great.
    Thanks.

    #12 Dropped frames on capture/playback
Shane's Stock Answer #12:  Dropped frames on capture/playback
    http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=58640
    1) Do not capture to your main system drive.  Since it is busy reading the operating system and application files, it will intermittently drop frames during capture.  Capture to a separate internal drive, or external hard drive (firewire and eSATA for example).
    2) Deactivate any anti-virus/filesaver software, including Norton and Virex.  For some reason these programs think that the large files created when you capture media are in fact caused by some sort of virus, and they try to prevent this.
    3) Check the format of the drive you are capturing to. It should be Mac OS Extended, journaling off. If it isn't, copy your files from it and re-initialize it.  If it is any other format, you will encounter problems. If not at first, then eventually.
    4) Trash the FCP preference files.  Use PREFERENCE MANAGER to do that, available here:
    http://www.digitalrebellion.com
    5) Make sure that the hard drives you are capturing to are fast enough to handle the footage being captured to it.  A regular firewire 400 drive cannot capture uncompressed HD, or even uncompressed standard definition.  A RAID array of drives might be in order for these formats.

  • Suddenly: Dropped Frames on Capture

I've NEVER had a problem with dropped frames. I installed the FCP 5.0.3 upgrade, then had massive problems with dropped frames. In fact, I can't digitize anything: DSR-11, VHS with non-controllable device, nothing. I did the entire troubleshooting routine, then finally trashed my prefs file. Problem solved! I captured everything to my heart's content yesterday. Shut down the G5 last night...turned it back on this morning. Problem is back. Trashed prefs file. Problem won't go away. I can't capture anything.
In troubleshooting, I tried my G5, my G4 Powerbook...all had the same problem. What gives?

    Hi Jerry
I have the same issue with FCP 5, (dropped frames on capture.)
My setup is a brand new G5/Quadcore.
OS was installed from the factory and updated online to 10.4.3
FCP 5 Studio, (installed from the Suite disk set) updated online to current updates for the entire suite, Pro Apps updated, etc.
    Memory in G5: 2GB
Storage: Xserve RAID 3.5TB, with Raid Admin 1.5 and drivers 1.5 on RAID. All fibre channel connections are via an Emulex switch, (12 port.)
Source Deck: Betacam UVW-1800, connected via component video.
Capture Device: AJA Io, (original Io) updated to 2.1 drivers.
I'm still having dropped frame, right from the get go, during capture.
I also have a G4 with FCP 4.5 HD, (OS X 10.3.9) which I also connect to the Io box, (but not at the same time) which has no issues with dropped frames.
Do you have any ideas why the G5 drops frames but the G4 doesn't?

  • A problem with a Materialized View

    Hi,
I have a ordinary table with a three column compound primary key (COL_Id, COL_ValidFrom, COL_CaseId)
I also have a MV that selects from that table. This one compiles just fine. It looks like this:
    CREATE MATERIALIZED VIEW "MV_02"
    REFRESH FORCE ON COMMIT
    AS SELECT COL_Id, COL_ValidFrom, MAX(COL_CaseId) CaseId FROM TBL_MediaText GROUP BY COL_Id, COL_ValidFrom;
Works fine. Now I'm trying to create a second MV that selects from the first MV. It looks like this:
    CREATE MATERIALIZED VIEW "MV_03"
    REFRESH FORCE ON COMMIT
    AS
    SELECT a.COL_Id, a.CaseId, a.COL_ValidFrom, NVL(MIN(b.COL_ValidFrom)-1, TO_DATE('2099-12-31','yyyy-mm-dd')) ValidTo
    FROM MV_02 a, MV_02 b
    WHERE a.COL_Id=b.COL_Id(+) AND a.COL_ValidFrom < b.COL_ValidFrom(+)
    GROUP BY a.COL_Id, a.CaseId, a.COL_ValidFrom;
This one does not parse. (ORA-12054) There seem to be a probelem with the ON COMMIT command. I have searched the web and found some info on the subject. It tells me to create a MV log, wich I have. I've also tried to put count(*) and count(b.COL_validfrom). But it just wont work.
I see a possibilty of yhe problem laying in te fact that I join using two parts of my PK. Also there might be a problem with the fact that i can't create a log for MV_02 WITH PRIMARY KEY. Or maybe you can't have a MV selecting from another MV?
Do anyone know how i should specify my Logs and/or querys in order for this to parse?
I'm using 10.1, and I do have the ON REFRESH COMMIT-privilege.
    Thanks!

  • Problem with Packaging Material Type

    Hello all Gurus,
I have a problem with a packaging material type that I have created copying the standrad Packaging material type LEIH. I created a new packing material type ZPAC - Packaging Material copying LEIH.
I then created a new material master record using this new material type ZPAC.
When I am using this material for packing in outbound delivery document - VL01N, I am getting the following strange error message:
20333 does not have packaging material type and is therefore not a pack.mat.
Please suggest me why this error is coming and how I can rectify this error. Is there any further configuration that I need to do for packaging material types??? Kindly suggest.
    Thanks and Regards,
    Umakanth.

    Hi,
Material type is not enough, you have to maintain proper master data as well as config.
At least please maintain value in MARA-VHART for the packaging material. Please also check these links how HUM works:

  • RMDATIND uploading problem with external material numbers

    Hi,
I'm using LSMW direct input program RMDATIND (Object:0020 Method:0000) for creating materials.
I have a problem with uploading materials which have two types of external material numbers.
For example one material number is 1111-333 and then we have 10000000. The problem is that direct input won't create materials with number 1111-333 though it's possible to create them manually. It works fine with material 10000000.
Does anyone know how fix this issue?

    Hi,
go to the path Define Number Ranges for Each Material Type click on maintain groups & select the materila type & select the mouse on material type & click on maintain after that maintain the number ranges.
for ex: from 300000000 to 399999999 internal no.range
from A                to ZZZZZZ     external no.range
from this u can able to create a material with external number range and it can be numeric or alpha numeric

  • Drop Frame Timeline with 59.94 Editing Timebase

I'm working with DVCPRO HD footage for broadcast television. My Editing Timebase is 59.94 and under the Timeline Options tab the checkbox to select a Drop Frame timeline is grayed out. I have a sequence that needs to be EXACTLY 22 minutes in running time, but I can't find a way to change to a Drop Frame timeline. I have found this to be the case for all 59.94 sequences. Any suggestions?
    Final Cut Pro 6.0.1
    MacPro1,1   Mac OS X (10.4.10)   Dual-Core Intel Xeon, 3 GHz, 2 Processors, 4 GB memory

Most TV shows that are broadcast are cut in NTSC, non-drop frame.
I think that you'll find that to be incorrect. The SEQUENCES are always drop frame...because we need to know the proper show times. It is the CAMERA MASTERS that are mostly shot NDF...for the clean lists. IN the past (and still currently I suppose) when dealing with onlining on a tape to tape system or sometimes with an Avid Symphony, you needed NDF masters for the clean workable EDL. That is becoming less of the norm lately, but it is still wise to shoot one format...DF or NDF, instead of mixing. NDF camera masters are the norm.
But DROP FRAME NTSC sequences are the norm. Although NDF HD sequences are the norm lately, but I wonder if that is due to the NLEs that don't offer DF timelines. Which is stupid, as the decks are DF capable.

  • Drop Frame problem

I am working with FCP 5.1 on a MacBook Pro. I am bringing in footage from a Canon GL-1 via firewire. The footage on the tape is non-drop frame timecode, and I have created a new setup to capture it, but for when I went to capture, a dialog box popped up that warned me I was about to capture non-drop footage to drop-frame clips. I captured the clips, and in the bin the clips show up as 29.97 frames. I put the clips on the timeline and the audio is out of sync. What is going on??? Can anyone help me?
    Charles

i think you have a couple of issues going on - i won't address the audio sync issue but you may want to do a search for canon & sync to deal with that.
in terms of your timecode issue, you are a bit confused about the meaning of the "drop/non-drop" designations. in NTSC video, all video is 29.97. the TC used to name it is base 30, but can be drop or non-drop (which only changes the way the frames are named, not the speed of the video). all clips should be 29.97.
if the footage on tape is drop or non-drop, FCP will recognize it as such when you log.
there are some decks that can "force" a kind of timecode (ie read one type from the tape and send another type to FCP) but i'd be surprised if that was the case with your canon.
    hope that helps clarify.
    R.

  • Dropped Frames Problem

I am helping a friend edit a project in FCP 7.0.1. He has a slightly older iMac with 3GB RAM and a 2.16GHz Core2Duo. The footage is HD and is on an external HDD and is conncted to the iMac via Firewire. The footage plays fine in the Sequence until one clip ends and a new one begins. Then FCP hiccups and generates a dropped frames error. Any idea what is causing this?

It turns out the compression used by the camera was H.264. This compression is not designed for editing and is processor intensive, that is why there was stuttering issues. You have to convert the footage to something easier on an NLE such as Apple's ProRes. Use Compressor to change the files (or edit the sequence with stutters, then render it out with ProRes) and you should be good to go.

  • How to fix Frame problems with fonts

When I try to "Save as book" to PDF, I get a font error that prevents the file opening for printing.
When I view the file, I get:
The "Myriad Pro Light" Font is not available.
"MyriadPro-Regular" will be used in this session.
The print error does not specify which font, but I assume it is the one mentioned in the first line above.
The font is in the Windows font directory, but FM is not seeing it.  How do I fix this?
Unstructered FM12, Win8.1, HP printers (no choice about that)

I am hoping somebody here can say what bits of Acrobat FrameMaker 12 includes. I don't know, because I am using Tech Comm Suite, which includes full-on Acrobat.
At the least, FrameMaker solo should include the PDF printer driver and Distiller. With these, Save as PDF from FrameMaker should work fine, and if you have the fonts you should be able to print and embed them in a PDF.
In my experience, font issues for Adobe products happen this way:
You have certain fonts installed. There is no problem with these.
You set as default a printer that has its own resident fonts. Those fonts now become available.
You use the printer resident fonts in your document, which is fine, until ...
... You change printers, perhaps to PDF printer, and now the printer-resident fonts you thought you had are no longer there.
Note, some printers are set to substitute fonts. So, you might specify a certain font but your HP printer actually has a font substitution table that is swapping your chosen font for Times New Roman, or sommat. Watch out for that, too.
So, double check you have the fonts you think you do; view them in Character Map, for example.
    Cheers,
    Sean

This situation will not go away. I can play 1080i all day but try to play a 720p sequence and frames drop

I agree with Tallguy. It's either the higher frame rate, the type of compression or both.
