Sudden inability to boot up... Please help!

So I've had a MacBook Pro for a little over a year now, and I have had nary a problem with it beyond simple things that could be cured with a reboot - until this morning. I shut down my computer and packed it up to bring it to work, thinking I'd get some photo organizing done in my downtime. (It was working fine this morning... I was killing some time on the web before I left for work.)
Well, when I tried to boot it up after plugging in my external HD, mouse, and the power adapter, nothing happened, save for the usual small clicking sounds of the CD/DVD drive and the standby light (holding a steady white glow). Usually, after this happens, the Apple logo would pop up, I'd hear the startup tone, etc. but absolutely nothing happened.
So I have tried the troubleshooting tips on the Apple support page, but none seemed to do anything, save for resetting the PRAM. After I reset the PRAM, I was able to hear the startup tone again (I'm thinking this may be because I use BootCamp and had it set to start up in Vista? I guess resetting this made it revert back to starting with Leopard by default? I'm not sure). I haven't changed or added any RAM (as the troubleshooting guide mentions) or downloaded any software updates for ANY of my programs lately, let alone operating system updates. However, I do believe that I am running the most recent update for Leopard.
I'm at work right now and would love to try reinstalling/repairing Leopard a try, but I can't get home to grab my discs. Does anyone have any suggestions, or maybe has had a similar problem that they were able to fix? I should note that I'm living in rural Japan at the moment and I'm at least a 3 hour bus ride from the closest city that has an Apple Store, and I'm not sure about what kinds of places are authorized repair centers in Japan, so I'd like to handle this myself if at all possible. Please help!
Two things that I should note, that may or may not have anything to do with the problems I'm having:
One, the other day, a friend gave me a CD of hers that had a photo album that she created on iPhoto on it. When I ran the CD, I noticed that the CD/DVD drive was making an irregularly high amount of noise (like it was reading the CD very intensely, scanning back and forth incessantly) and my computer became very slow at that time. I almost had to force quit iPhoto but I eventually was able to quit out and my computer returned to normal. Not sure if this has any relation whatsoever to what happened this morning, but this was the first time my Mac had acted so strangely.
Two, I noticed as I was inspecting the power adapter today that when plugged into my computer, the green LED, instead of being a super-steady light, was actually flickering ever so slightly when I looked at it really closely... is this normal? Has anyone else ever seen this kind of thing?
All your suggestions are appreciated!
P.S. If I said anything that makes me look like a complete newbie here, please disregard it... This is my first Mac after having used Windows machines for a very long time and I still don't know my way around the Mac like I do a Windows machine yet.

Thanks for the warm welcome Neville!
I have already tried approximately what you instructed here last night after I got home from work, and I also spoke to an Apple Japan English tech support member on the phone yesterday.
So holding the Shift key (essentially the Mac's "Safe Mode", right?) caused nothing to happen. My screen remains black for regardless of what I do and how long I do it, it seems. I also tried putting in my Leopard DVD, restarting the machine, and holding C as I boot up. This also did nothing, but I noticed that after holding C for a very long time (about 3 or 4 minutes), the standby light stopped glowing white and went dark. That was the only change I noticed. I could hear the DVD spinning and doing a lot of work, however, and also I noticed that the computer was getting warm and the fans were spinning as if it were working normally, so basically to me it seems like there's something wrong with the video. I've had video problems on other machines (albeit Windows ones) in the past that were kind of like this, and usually a swap for a new video card did the trick. I do play World of Warcraft often on my Mac and it runs at quite a high temperature, maybe there's a possibility that some part overheated?
Of course I sincerely hope that there's nothing wrong with my HD. I have a backup, but it's not extremely up-to-date as my current external HD is unusable without a reformatting for Time Machine, and I have too much data on it to just flat-out reformat. I've basically just manually backed up important files every now and again. Anything that DOESN'T involve a new hard drive would be wonderful... *sweats profusely* I'm moving back to the US in August, and you can be sure I'm going to buy myself a Time Capsule first thing.
From my description above, do you think there's any hope that the hard disk might not be the problem here?
I should also note that I also tried something that I had read in another thread here, regarding holding D on startup to run the Disk Utility, but that also seemed to do nothing.
As I said above, I talked to a representative of Apple tech support as well, and he was pretty quick to set up a service call to my place once we noted that my computer seemed to not boot from the Leopard DVD. They are scheduled to come pick up my MBP on Thursday (it's Tuesday afternoon right now in Japan)... Anyone have any other tips that I could try before then? I'd love to be able to resolve this on my own rather than having to wait a week and a half to get the thing back, perhaps stripped of my data!
This is all so frustrating considering I was using my MBP with next to ZERO problems until yesterday morning when I decided to shut it down and bring it to work... There was really no indication that anything serious was about to go wrong.

  • Satellite m300 won't boot! please help!

    Hi,
I've got a bit of an issue here.. I have a Satellite m300.. a white one..
and it won't boot... I've had this very issue before but it turned out to be an external USB HDD that stopped it from booting up but now even with everything removed it still won't boot.
And it was fine until yesterday, it just gave up.. I am away from home for work so I have all the work stuff and unfortunately without my recovery cd, but my guess is that it won't even read it..
    So this is what happens..
    turn on..
all light come on.. including power and all the white lights around the keypad..
and then maybe 5 sedconds later caplock and numlock(?) green lights flash..
then it's a dead still.. no HDD activities or sound.. just dead quite..
the screen remains black blank through out..
it seems to get stuck here before reaching the post screen.
i thought the power button usually took more than just a push to turn off? it instantly swithces off with a single push of the power button..
I think this laptop is like on sleep or something and can't seem to wak up.. maybe?
    And it has vista.
Please help.. I have some important work files I need to recover at least before formatting..
and that has to wait till I get home which won't be for a month or so..
which also lets me take it back for warranty as well..
    any help appreciated!!!
    cheers,

Just removed all components. I reset the CMOS. I then reconnected the 20pin and 4pin, 1 stick ram, and the video card (no ide devices, no mouse, keyboard cd drives) and the monitor doesn't show up. I also tried another monitor so it isn't the monitor.
Could it have a bad AGP port?
Any other suggestions? I am thouroughly stumped. Also the power and reset buttons don't work no matter what configuaration I put the front panel connectors in. The Power LED is lit up and it doesn't work and the reset light is off and it doesn't work.
Also noticed one of my fans connected to one of the two other fan pins on the motherboard isn't working.
    What a nightmare.

  • 8800, battery symbol with red line through it. Won't boot. Please help!!!

I recently bought a 8800 and when I inserted a battery, all I got was a battery symbol with a red line through it on a dim screen.  I changed batteries, tried to charge it via USB and from a wall outlet to no avail.  I tried cleaning the contacts and tried uploading t a new  OS, but it wont recognize the phone being connected when it actually is.    I am at the end of my rope with this phone and can't figure out what else to do.  Is it just gone? Please help me
    Solved!
    Go to Solution.

Leave the device to charge 2-3 hours, and then, still connected to the USB cable, remove the the battery from the device a few seconds and reinsert it. If it boots--leave it to charge to 100% (check Options > Status for the percentage).
If it doesn't boot--try using a wall outlet charger if you are not. If you are connected via USB to the PC, make certain that you have Desktop Manager (or the USB device drivers) installed, which you can download below.

  • IMac G5 HD Won't Boot. Please Help.

I have an iMac G5 (Power PC) which has been running OS 10.5.8 without any issues until today.
When starting, I have a grey screen with the Apple logo, but the wheel beneath keeps turning and the computer will not boot up. I've tried to start it many times, and I just get the grey screen, etc.   P.S.  I do have a Time Capsule connected via Ethernet and Time Machine was active until this problem today.  The TC is disconnected at this point, as I was afraid I'd lose that back up.
    Here is what I tried:
I disconnected everything except the keyboard and mouse (not internet/modem/Time Capsule)
I booted from the Leopard Disk, and ran Disk Utility. Message said the the HD appears to be OK
I booted from Drive Genius and ran the following:
    1.  Repair-Verify:  Message was that HD appears OK
    2.  Repair-Repair:  Message was that HD appears OK
    3.  Repair-Rebuild:  Had a few invalid volumes.  Message was that the Volume Header and HD repaired successfully
    4.  Repair-Preferences;  SAID THERE IS A CORRUPT PREFERENCE:   /bin/sh:xargs:command not found (There was no way that I saw to fix this!)
    5.  Scan for Bad Blocks:  None found
I tried to start the computer again, but I still get the grey screen, Apple Logo, and constant spinning of the wheel WITHOUT a start.  It appears that the HD is not 'Dead' but has some issue, perhaps the corrupt preference listed.
So, I need help with my next step. Would any of the following work and if more than one, what order would be best?
    1.  Use the Leopard Install Disk to 'Restore from Time Machine Backup'?  (Never have done this, so I'm clueless)
    2.  Use the Leopard Install Disk and 'Archive and Install' the OS?  Can I do this since the HD has the updates to OS 10.5.8?
    3.  Use the Leopard Install Disk to Erase and Reinstall the OS and then migrate from the Time Capsule (Never have done this either)
    4.  AND, if none of this works, I'm assuming I could go get a new iMac and restore everything from the Time Capsule/Time Machine, even though there the OS in a new machine would be upgraded and also Intel Processor.  Yes?
In any case....PLEASE HELP if you can.....and THANKS

Thanks for trying to help with this :-).  I started as you suggested and here are the last few lines:

  • Problems with Boot Camp - PLEASE HELP!

I'm having problems with Boot Camp. Here's what's happening. I ran Boot Camp Assistant, partitioning a 32GB BOOTCAMP drive. I insert my copy of XP and start the installation. My MBP restarts and boots into the Windows Setup. I let it run through the initial actions. I press ENTER to proceed, F8 to accept the license agreement, then when I get to the part where I should be able to select the Partition 3 BOOTCAMP drive (as it says in the Apple Boot Camp Manual) there is only a Partition 1 Unknown drive. It is the only drive to choose from and its a C: drive. I can't figure out why after I run boot camp the partitioned drive doesn't appear as an option in the windows installation. Please help!!!
    Message was edited by: CarlConti08

Boot into Leo, start Disk Utility and you should see two partitions, your Leo partition and a Fat32 partition of 32GB at the end of the drive.
If not, boot camp didn't create it for some reason. If it is there then check it with DU and make sure its OK.
While your in there give it a name so you can easily identify it in your windows installer.
If there is no partition, create one using Disk Utility at the END if the drive. make sure you create it as a msdos (Fat32) partition and give it a name. The name cannot be more than 11 characters must be comprised of numbers and/or letters (no special characters).
    Verify it before exiting DU.
Put in windows install disk, reboot - hold option key after the chime until you see the boot screen - select windows CD to begin install.
Don't forget to install Leo windows drivers after installing windows.

  • Help! Computer turns on but then will not boot up - Please Help!

I have no idea what happened to my Apple. Someone please help me. My powerbook currently is running on no battery (recall victim) and now the entire computer is no longer functioning at all. I installed iTunes 7.0 and then the trouble began. I had to restart the computer, so I did that and then the computer just wont boot up. It goes to the grey screen which shows the Apple symbol and occurs right before my log in then just continues to read. The green light for the battery is function and nothing at all is working. The computer simply will not boot up, I have tried unplugging it for the night and then rebooting it and nothing. Please someone help, what has went wrong?

You mentioned in your other thread that you had trouble with a cpu(0) hardware error trying to use the hardware test disk. Is this the hardware test disk which came with that particular machine? If not, then you need to find the original hardware test disk that came with that machine. If the restore disks that say 12" Powerbook include the words hardware test, use those instead and follow these directions:
    http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=86287
If you are using the correct hardware test disk and you get a cpu(0) error using it, then the machine has a hardware problem.

  • Mac booting problem - Please help! very, very desperate!

My mac was being very, very slow so I turned it off, then as it it was booting it was taking ages so i restared in safe mode. While booting in safe mode the black bar at the bottom goes around 2/5 of the way across and then my macbook just switches off.
    Ive tried:
    fsck
    disk utility repair/verify
    reinstalling OS X Lion
When i tried to repair, it said i needed to erase everything and reinstall the OS. Last night when i tried to it said both drives are locked so i couldnt. And now when i just tried again, neither drivers are appearing; the box is just blank.
Let alone my livelyhood on the laptop, i have thousands and thousands pictures which if lost, would genuinley heartbreak me. I have much valuable data on my laptop and i really dont want to erase all data, because me being the gigantic fool that i am, i only have one time machine back up from about a year and a half ago.
    Please, please help.
    Thank you!

    humzasadique,
unfortunately you’ve now discovered where the value proposition lies in making regular backups — if your livelihood depends upon your laptop, that lack of due diligence is rather baffling.
Which model MacBook Pro do you have, and which version of OS X is installed on it? Do you have an external bootable drive?

  • My iMac won't boot up please help

Please help me. My iMac just won't start up. Thank you

Does it try at al, or no sign of anything at all?
Can you boot from your Install Disc holding c key?
Does holding Option or alt key at bootup show any choices?
Does it boot to Single User Mode, CMD+s keys at bootup, if so try...
    /sbin/fsck -fy
Repeat until it shows no errors fixed.
(Space between fsck AND -fy important).
Resolve startup issues and perform disk maintenance with Disk Utility and fsck...

  • Can't pass boot screen please help!

My macbook pro will not boot pass the apple screen. I power on and it goes to the boot screen and the loop spins like its loading but it dosent go passed this screen. What can I do? I am stuck please help.

I also have a similar issue. I do not have the ability to to boot to an install disc because the optical drive is no longer functioning. Unfortunately I do not have the ability to use a shared optical drive from another computer either. So repair permissions, repair disk, archive and install, and erase & install cannot be done.
I cannot boot to Safe Mode, which leads me to believe it has to be something with the login window itself.
Found similar case on forum and when they ran in verbose mode it returned the following:
" /System/Library/Coreservices/LoginWindow.app/Contents/MacOS/loginwindow: Login Window Application Started"
" /usr/sbin/AppleFileServer: Server crashed and exited with status 4.\n"
I understand this example is from OS X Server, however, I'm guessing this has something to do with the same process.
What should I try next? Are there any single user options?

I have several magazines save to My Documents. My husband bought me a tablet for these. I was emailing them through the Adobe Reader without difficulty to the tablet email. • Intel iMac won't boot up, please help.

Yesterday I downloaded the iPhone 2.1 Software Update, I then lost two thirds of my contacts, I managed to get them back using the Sync System, I then downloaded the Security Update, which failed "Due to an error" and was "put in the Trash". My computer then crashed, I restarted it and now it won't boot up, it gets as far as the White Screen with the Apple Logo on it with the Spinning Bars "loading" icon underneath, it was like that for over an hour last night and I've tried again this morning and it's the same. has my hard drive gone or is there some less (I hope) final reason for this? Is there an equivalent to Windoze safe mode or similar?
    Please help urgently.
    Thank You

Try this qst... Safe Boot , (holding Shift key down at bootup), off the HD & use Disk Utility from there to Repair Permissions, reboot once more.
If that doesn't help, Could be many things, we should start with this...
    "Try Disk Utility
    1. Insert the Mac OS X Install disc that came with your computer, then restart the computer while holding the C key.
    2. When your computer finishes starting up from the disc, choose Disk Utility from the Installer menu. (In Mac OS X 10.4 or later, you must select your language first.)
Important: Do not click Continue in the first screen of the Installer. If you do, you must restart from the disc again to access Disk Utility.
    3. Click the First Aid tab.
    4. Click the disclosure triangle to the left of the hard drive icon to display the names of your hard disk volumes and partitions.
    5. Select your Mac OS X volume.
    6. Click Repair. Disk Utility checks and repairs the disk."
    http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=106214
Then Safe Boot from the HD, (holding Shift key down at bootup), run Disk Utility in Applications>Utilities, then highlight your drive, click on Repair Permissions, reboot when it finishes.
The usual reason why updates fail or mess things up, or things don't load/run, is if Permissions are not fixed before & after every update, with a reboot... you may get a partial update when the installer finds it doesn't have Permissions to change one obscure little part of the OS, leaving you with a mix of OS versions.
Some people get away without Repairing Permissions for years, some for only days.
If Permissions are wrong before applying an update, you could get mixed OS versions, if Directory is the slightest messed up, who knows!
If many Permission are repaired, or any Directory errors are found, you may need to re-apply some the latest/biggest updates again, or even do an A&I if you have enough free disk space.
If we still don't have it, try without a Tiger Disk, but try fsck...
To use fsck, you must run it from the command line. Unlike using your mouse to open an application to do something, you'll need to type a text command at the prompt (#) to tell fsck what to do. The Terminal application (/Applications/Utilities) and single-user mode are two examples of command-line interfaces in which you can type such commands. To use fsck:
    1. Start up your computer in single-user mode to reach the command line. Hold CMD+s keys down at bootup.
Note: If necessary, perform a forced restart as described in the Emergency Troubleshooting Handbook that came with your computer. On desktop computers, you can do this by pressing the reset/interrupt button (if there is one) or holding down the power button for several seconds. On portable computers, simultaneously press the Command-Control-power keys. If your portable computer doesn't restart with this method, you may need to reset the Power Manager.
    2. At the command-line prompt, type /sbin/fsck -fy
    3. Press Return. fsck will go through five "phases" and then return information about your disk's use and fragmentation. Once it finishes, it'll display this message if no issue is found:
** The volume (nameofvolume) appears to be OK
If fsck found issues and has altered, repaired, or fixed anything, it will display this message:
*** FILE SYSTEM WAS MODIFIED ***

Important: If this message appears, repeat the fsck command you typed in step 2 until fsck tells you that your volume appears to be OK (first-pass repairs may uncover additional issues, so this is a normal thing to do).
    4. When fsck reports that your volume is OK, type reboot at the prompt and then press Return.
    http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=106214
Then Safe Boot , (holding Shift key down at bootup), off the HD & use Disk Utility from there to Repair Permissions, reboot once more.

I need to give this iDVD to my friend who's leaving the country TODAY. Your help is much appreciated:
I made the DVD and it was all running smoothly and seemed to burn OK, but when it was done burning most of the pictures (but not all) in the slideshows turned into a broken chain with black and yellow stripes on the top and bottom. Why did this happen?? I don't know why they became this, there was no problem before. Some of the pictures are OK, seems random.
If you could tell me how to get my pictures back to replace these broken chains so I can reburn the DVD where all the pictures work. Please Help!
