Sudden inability to charge iphone 4 4.3.5

I started having an issue last night where pop up for accessory not supported, plugged into OE charger cable and wall adapter.  this morning was fine then when i went to charge it it wouldnt charge, looked at pins on cable and inside of phone and there was a dab of green.  cleaned with alcohol, dried and blew air through it now it shows it charging but in fact is NOT charging.  i havent updated it in recent week if i remember correctly (did alot of updates and such for a friends iphone so i really dont think i did my phone)  i am kind of lost as i have had it for 11 months problem free.
i have tried other cables
tried to use usb port in comp to charge
closest Apple store is like 30 miles away and just hard to get to.
any help?

I noticed that my battery drains very fast - whole charge gone in 5-6hrs or even less), while abroad and without Internet (don't want to use roaming). I've shutted off all services and it doesn't help at all.
I get same battery life even when I put phone in 'airplane mode', which supposed to shut down all network activities.
Recently I got Internet connection shared through WiFi on my mac laptop and everything went back to normal again - whole day and only 18% gone.
Obviously, that can be a huge issue, as Internet may not be available for the whole trip. I remember, I was able to get 3-5 days on stand-by and may be short phone calls with my old 3G iPhone (iOS 3.2.x) while abroad and without Internet connection.
Is there is any solution for this problem?
If the battery drain occurs when cellular data is off it means that some app is trying to send data and failing, so it continuously retries. From what you said later the problem was the Contacts app trying to update your server side Contacts.

  • HELP!!! "Charging is not supported with this accessory" suddenly happening CONSTANTLY with iphone 4

Suddenly without warning my IPhone 4 has been giving me a "charging is not supported with this accessory error" every time I plug it into ANY charging device.  That means my car charger, USB to the PC... USB to a macbook pro... Directly to the wall with the included charger, etc.  It doesn't matter.  I guess I'm past the 1 year warranty so Apple is not any help.  Essentially I'm supposed to accept that my $200 (with a contract) phone has a 1 year life span and that I should be completely fine with it becoming useless out of nowhere.  Here's some facts.
#1 - It has nothing to do with 3rd party accessories.  One day it was working... one day it wasn't.
#2 - I cleaned lint out of the charging port on the phone.  That was the first thing I tried. I used compressed air to blow it out, I used a soft bristle tooth brush...  It's lint free.  It has nothing to do with lint.  I understand this is the most likely cause of the problem.
#3 - When I plug it into a PC or macbook via USB, I'm able to access the IPhone 4 like I ALWAYS have.  In other words, I can see pictures, I can back up the phone, I can restore the phone, I can transfer music, sync, etc.  So this would presumably rule out the idea that it's the dock connector, right?  Why would USB work, but the charging function will NOT work?
#4 - On that note, I was able to update the software to the latest version 5.1.1.  That was one of the first things I tried.  No dice.  I still get the "charging not supported with this accessory" error literally every time I plug it in with a yellow triangle icon... Seen here for example: http://tapatalk.com/mu/4c5f44af-af20-d86c.jpg .
#5 - So since it's not charging, the phone inevitably dies.  Here's the weird part... if I leave it plugged into the wall/pc/mac/car when it's dead... eventually it will charge enough to turn back on.  But once it's back on... that **** error will pop back up, it will stop charging... and inevitably die again.  So then... that would suggest that it actually IS capable of taking a charge... it's just that something in the software is preventing it from charging when the software is active, no?  Am I off base here?
#6 - So I decided I'd take it to the genius bar to have them look at it.  Right before I did that, I got the brilliant idea to try using an alcohol swab on the dock connector just to make sure it was super duper extra clean.  Oddly enough, it suddenly started working without the error.  It was working on every charger I tried.  Wow.  I thought I had fixed it.  A day later it started happening again, though.  Bizarre.  I've tried the alcohol swab thing again and it didn't make a difference... maybe it was just a fluke.... the one day I take it to the Apple genius bar and it works.  Go figure, right?
#7 - The only helpful thing the tech at the Apple Genius Bar was able to tell me was that the phone did NOT have any kind of water damage.  That rules that out.  No water damage in the charging dock OR the headphone jack.  So there's that.
#8 - Since it's no longer under warranty... I took it upon myself to buy a replacement battery via Amazon.com and installed it myself.  Didn't make a difference... still the same error.
What, if anything, can I try?  Could it really be the dock connector?  Should I try replacing the dock connector?  Is there any software-related thing I can try?  Has this happened to anyone else?   Apple has essentially told me it's my problem.  From my perspective... any product that randomly stops working a little over a year is a faulty product.  I'm not pleased at all.

Tried at least 6 different cables.  It isn't the cable.  All of them worked one day... then stopped working the next day.  My girlfriend has an identical Iphone 4 and all of the cables still work for her.
Interesting point on the data and power using different pins.  So your suggestion would be to replace the dock connector?  Found this on Amazon: http://www.amazon.com/Apple-iPhone-dock-connector-cable/dp/B003UGVOO2/ref=sr_1_1 ?ie=UTF8&qid=1338277549&sr=8-1 ... and found a tutorial online:  http://www.ifixit.com/Guide/Installing-iPhone-4-Dock-Connector/3147/1#.T8SG_sXWu -o  ... Sounds like that might be my best bet here.
It's just odd to me that the phone gives me that error and refuses to charge... then inevitably dies.  But once the phone is dead, it starts charging enough to actually turn back on.  Isn't that slightly odd?

Presuming you are using a wall charger - it would seem that your battery needs to be looked at in an Apple store

  • I have IPhone 4S in cold -7 off and says that there is no charge ... come home I try to include all of a sudden turn! Charge as it was before the spree, what to do?

I IPhone 4S in cold -7 off and says that there is no charge ... come home I try to include all of a sudden turn! Charge as it was before the spree, what to do?

    That's too cold.
Apple designed this diagram of ideal temperature for the Iphone:
Everything below 32ºF/0ºC is too cold and the device's battery is not going to work as espected.
    Take a look at this:

  • How to charge iphone 5 correctly

    Hi everyone,
So Apple says to do a full cycle charge once a month (charge iphone from 0% to 100% and then do a reset) right?!
But during everyday use should I charge the phone for bit during the day? Or just charge every night before going to bed?
When the 20% alert shows you must charge the iphone to avoid a complete cycle charge?
    Any suggestions?
    Thank you

The purpose of the full cycle charge is to recalibrate the battery gauge. Lithium chemistry batteries are notoriously hard to manage, because their voltage does not drop linearly with state of charge, as most other secondary cells do. So the battery gauge monitors battery charge going in and battery drain going out, and computes the remaining life from this. But the battery's capacity drops with age, and the calculation isn't perfect. So after a while the gauge no longer knows what the state of charge actually is. The most obvious symptom of this is when the phone suddenly shuts off well above 1% remaining. When you run the battery all the way down, then charge fully, the charging circuit in the phone can re-establish the end points.
Anyway, the answer to your question is charge it whenever you want, except that you should periodically run it all the way down, then fully charge it (once a month, as Apple suggests). But not every day. According to Apple this does not affect the total lifetime of the battery.
Oh, one other point. The iPhone will not let you deep discharge the battery. When it shuts off at 1% there is still significant charge left. It's unusable charge, except to keep iOS alive. If you fly a plane there are 2 numbers you need to know - total fuel capacity, and useable fuel capacity, which is always lower. Same with Lithium batteries in electronics.

iTunes suddenly mentions that my iPhone cannot be synced because it needs 6.55 additional GB, although my phone still has 2 GB free of space. How can I fix this?
iCloud is off on both my phone and my computer.

It is saying that the iPod does not have enough free storage to sync all the items yu have selected to sync to the iPod. You need 2.48 GB more free on the iPod. You need either to select less to sync or delete some content form the iPod.

  • All of a sudden this morning my iphone will not send imessages from my phone number but only from my email address. When I go to the settings for my imessages to choose where they are coming from my phone number is greyed out....Is there a way to fix this

All of a sudden this morning my iphone will not send imessages from my phone....

    Hi Chas869,
Hmm, that is strange that your phone number is greyed out. There are a few things that we can try. First would be to turn iMessages off, then back on. See if you are able to select your phone number. Then if that doesn't work, turn iMessages back off, then reset the network settings....settings>general>reset>reset network settings, this will reboot the phone. Don't worry, it won't delete anything from the phone, it simulates a battery pull. Once the device comes back on, then turn iMessages back on. Keep us posted if that works!

A four year battery could be dead. I'd contact an Apple Service Center.

  • Charging iPhone with closed lid on mbp

I've been researching, but found nothing this specific so far. Related links:

    - http://forums.macrumors.com/showthread.php?t=795007 This is not the same model, but for him it seems to not work anyway
    - http://discussions.apple.com/thread.jspa?threadID=2126178 Suggests http://support.apple.com/kb/HT3131 for dealing with closed lid, but requires external display, among other things that don't come to this case (or so I guess)
To me, experience showed that closing the lid with the iPhone already connected works fine. I'm using a macbook pro 2009, as already hinted elsewhere. It's 13'' if that makes any difference.
But if I have the computer sleeping in the bag and want to just plug the iPhone for charging convenience, then it doesn't work. I have to remove it, open the lid, wait for charging to begin, then I can safely close, sleep, put it back on the bag, and it will be charging.
So I wonder how this is supposed to work, and if I can "fix" this behavior. Anyone knows?

I actually solved it on my own luck. Oddly enough, just need to remove and re-plug.
Here, this is a small chart:
1- Computer with lid open, up and running with energy - whatever AC or not.
normal behavior, everything as expected: plug in iPhone it starts charging.
2- Computer with closed lid, sleeping as blinking light indicate and plugged in AC power.
normal behavior, everything as expected: plug in iPhone it starts charging.
3- Computer with closed lid for long time, unplugged from AC power, no cables on it whatsoever.
plug in iPhone - nothing happens.
unplug it and plug in again in either port - it starts charging!
If you close the lid and don't wait it gets to sleep (that is, white blinking light - if you want to be sure, wait till the computer cools down, if it was hot - that's sleep mode) you'll get normal behavior right on the first plug time. The trick of plugging again seem to work always from my tests. So this is a undocumented feature that took me freaking long enough to uncover!
    Now it's aight!
