Sudden Instrument Death Syndrome

I'm still on Logic Pro 7.1 and i experience SIDS a lot.
Has this been fixed in newer versions of Logic ?
That alone is a great excuse to upgrade.

Jdredge, SIDS or Sudden Instrument Death Syndrome is a famous Logic bug where an a softsynth will stop receiving midi signal. For example, if u have an EXS24 running on Inst 1 and u have a midi sequence for this on the arrange, it will suddenly go mute, u wont even be able to play the instrument from ur controller keyboard, its as if someone unplugged the virtual Midi cable!! Work around is to copy the sequence data and channel strip setting to another fresh track. The SIDS track once dead cannot be brought back to life, i end up deleting them from the arrange.
Its a real **** off and sad that it still has not been completely solved.
Cheers

  • Sudden Instrument Death Syndrome (SIDS)

I'm calling on everyone who has had or continues to have problems with EXS24 instruments dropping out at random times to respond to this thread.
Does anyone have any magic "workarounds" (like hitting your G5 really hard with an open hand) to make the instruments start playing again?
Can people also post what type of computer they have and when they bought it. Could it be a hardware problem specific to a chipset used - like the kind that effects the UAD-1 and Powercore cards?
Does anyone know whether Apple has acknowledged this bug and whether or not 7.2 addresses this issue?

Respectfully, I must disagree with the first part of your reply:
"Apple does a LOT to communicate with its Logic users..."
No they don't; that is, unless the LA LUG is supposed to be the messenger for the rest of the world's Logic-using population. But I don't think this is the case. And I say that with absolutely no disrespect intended towards you, the LA LUG, or its esteemed memebers.
"...only not necessarily through the regular channels."
If there are no "regular" channels, then there are only "irregular", intangible channels, and therefore, in effect, no channels at all, other than the one enjoyed by the LA LUG.
At the first meeting we held last november, Bob Hunt
(Logic's Senior Product Manager) was present and was
taking feedback and answering questions from Logic
users. SIDS was one of the main topics, and rest
assured that the developers are aware of it and
trying their best to fix it.
That's VERY encouraging! Still, and I'm not trying to be difficult here, why shouldn't Logic users in general be informed of this directly from Bob Hunt/Apple vis a vis a Knowledge Base document, an emailing, or other direct form of communication? Heck, maw, we're all registered users. How difficult would it be for Apple/Logic to send an email saying "We know many of you have had difficulty with SIDS. Please know that we're aware of the problem and we're working on a fix for it".
I'm not knocking the news you've shared. But I must question why this information isn't shared publically. Also keep in mind that not all Logic users are members of on-line forums and this kind of news may not reach many of them.
At the last meeting we held last month, 4
Apple/Emagic developers were here from Germany, and
about 70 people gave them their feedback, suggestions
for new features, complaints about current issues
    and/or bugs.
    I wouldn't call that a business based on non-communication.
Well, I would. The meeting only took place in LA, and the world's a big place.
So just so you know, everybody at Apple is aware of
SIDS and working on fixing it. And Apple is trying to
communicate with us, just not through this here
    forum.
OK, perhaps this forum isn't the proper venue for addressing them. Actually, it's proven to be a completely ineffectual place to attempt to get the attention of Logic's management/programmers with respect to serious issues, and SIDS is only one of them. So could you please advise as to what the proper venue IS? Does one even exist?

  • Sudden magsafe death syndrome

Our magsafe died within 24 hours of receipt. It worked at first, now it won't charge the machine under any circumstances (PRAM, Energy Saver changes don't matter). It was completely dead.
Apple has promised to replace the part, originally 3-5 days to delivery, then 5-9 business days until shipment... I'm not holding my breath right now.
So two questions for the crowd:
    (1) any ideas on how to use the macbook at all until the new power supply arrives? any way to charge the battery externally? (there are no third party adapters and I can't even buy another magsafe adapter even if I wanted to)
Have any others had their magsafe power supplies die immediately after receipt of the new macbook?

I'm on my second failed magsafe power adaptor now, but my situation has a little twist that might shed some light on why this is happening. Both failed adaptors are in use at my home, which was built in 1957; original wiring and no ground. I have a fully functional adaptor at work (brand-new office building) and that one hasn't had so much as a hiccup.
In both cases my home adaptors began failing after about a week. The pins and the inside of the connecter on the adaptor are visibly scarred with a slightly corroded look; the one in my office still looks brand-new after a month of use. This is the fifth Power/MacBook that I've owned but this is the first time I've experienced adaptor failure. I'm guessing that these adaptors might not do so well in environments where the electrical current might vary due to older wiring or other such irregularities.

  • Blackberry Z10 Sudden Death Syndrome

For some inexplicable reason my Blackberry Z10 has died after a short life of three weeks. It was a quiet passing. She was working fine this morning faithfully taking calls, sending e-mails and reading text messages.  And then she just went to sleep and never woke up. Reinforcements are on the way; however I remain phoneless for the next three to five business days.
Three to five business days later…
Newly “certified refurbished” Blackberry Z10 from Verizon arrived then it died. This time death came about two weeks.  She was working awesome receiving texts and checking mail and then she was gone. She died fully charged with no history of dropping or having been coffee’d.
All attempts at resuscitation were unsuccessful (e.g., removing battery, tethering to computer to force software reload with or without battery, switching battery,  removing memory card, removing SIM card, checking that the white stickers weren’t pink, begging and pleading , crying, etc.)
I believe that there is a defect in the phone. I think that they should be recalled and replaced with new non-refurbished phones. IMHO.

  • Sudden Apple WiFi Death Syndrome

Apple TV has been working for two months with SMC Router that has a reach well beyond the Apple TV location. Suddenly it can no longer see the router. I hooked it up with Rj 45 and checked for SW updates but it is already up to date. Every thing wokrs with RJ 45 but I need the WiFi hook up. I have gone through all the usual power cycling on both the router and the Apple TV. I have checked all normal Wireless parameters and all is well. All the other wireless devices in the house continue to work perfectly. So does the Apple TV wireless function have a short life or is it vulnerable to some anomally that I am unfamiliar with?

Is it under warranty? If so get it replaced - there was an article elsewhere that suggested a certain group of serial numbers might have faulty wifi.
Just to check - you are unplugging ethernet when testing for wifi as it disables wifi when plugged in?

  • Sudden battery death on N85

So I unplug my N85 from the wall, completely charged (battery indicator shows 7 bars). I go out for a couple of hours, in which I use Maps and Music Player a bit. When I get back home and get ready for bed, the battery indicator still shows 7 bars (again, as expected, since I had not really used it much).
Now here's the shocker: in the morning, I look at the phone, and it's dead. There isn't even enough energy in the battery to start the phone for a few seconds, when I press the Power button. Needless to say, I did not leave any power-hungry application to run overnight...
Has anyone had this happened on their phone? Do these "sudden deaths" just sometime happen, or is it an indication that this (almost new!) battery is heading south?

I experice this problem all of the time. Usually, if the phone isn't used the battery can last over a weekend i.e. >48 h. However sometimes the phone just drains the battery like a short circuit - just that the battery never gets warm. Normally when a phone starts eating battery you notise it gets warm - but not the N85. Sometimes it just takes it an hour to drain the battery from half-charged to zero. Normally I check that there isn't any programs running - I am always turning off everything I don't need, except 3G and bluetooth of course since that is basic standby functions this device needs. (My SE T700 runs almost a week with both 3G and BT and a tiny battery) Also it is soo good at eating power that I often have to enter the time in the phone when I start it! A collegue has a N86 with similar problems.

  • Sudden iPod Death?

My iPod nano 2nd gen was working fine yesterday, but today it refuses to charge, be recognized by the computer, or anything. I have tried resetting it, plugging it into the wall, using different cables, different computers, both mac and PC. I have tried just about everything I can find on Apple's website regarding troubleshooting to no avail. Do nanos suffer sudden death like this normally?

You may still need to reset it. Sorry if this is a repeat of what you have already tried, but I don't have any other suggestions...
Put the hold switch to the OFF/White position. Now toggle it ON/orange then back off again. Then press and hold both the MENU and center buttons on the iPod and hold them for a good 15 seconds or so. Your iPod should reboot starting with the Apple Logo screen.
If it doesn't work the first time, give it a second or third go. Sometimes it takes a few/several tries.
See this thread as an example of what I mean by needing to try it many times...

  • Sudden keyboard death?

    Hi everyone!
Sorry if this is in the wrong place, I had no idea where to put it!
I shut off my keyboard last night and went to bed. It was all working fine up until then, but this morning when I swtiched it on, it wasn't working. The green light on the bottom wasn't coming on either, so I swtiched the battterys (I tested them so I know they worked in my other keyboard which is the same apple keyboard)
The light still didn't come on and my computer didn't notice it to pair.
Unless someone came in at night and broke it, I have no idea why it suddenly stopped working. Does anyone have any ideas what happened or what to try next to fix it?
    Thanks!

I had similar problem for a few of days. Ones was trying to pare it for a half day. Never figure out what was the problem.
But one advise, don't torn of your keyboard. Batteries enough for a half year anyways.

  • T61 - sudden battery death

Hi, I have a Thinkpad T61 for little over 2 years now and a problem with my battery. I'm using the original battery pack and kept it charged between 70 and 90 % for the periods I mainly used the AC-connector, so in theory, the pack should work. Yesterday, I plugged out the power-supply, because I wanted to take the laptop into another room and there the battery died after just 10 minutes, before that I had typical battery life of about 2 hours!! So I recharged the batterypack over night and tried again, nothing changed. Strange thing is, when I look at the battery capacity over time, it starts at nearly 100% and decreases slowly (predicted battery life about 2 hours), after approximately 10 minutes it just jumps from 90 to 4 or 5 %. That doesn't make any sense to me! Why is the decrease so abrupt? When I mesaure the battery-voltage, I still get like 12 V, although it shouldn't be that much, right?
My guess is, that there is something wrong with the chip on the battery, but I don't know how I can fix that...
As I learned, Lenovo only offers 12 months guaranty on battery-packs, is that true?
Is there anything I can do to reach the 2 hours battery life again (other than buying a new pack)?
    Thanks for your answers!

    Hi julphy,
Yes, it's true, warranty on the battery is only 1 year.
Battery is a consumable item that requires replacement at end of its life, usage of over 2 years is an ample life time for the battery in my stance. There is no fix other than buying new battery, sorry!
    Hope this helps.

  • Sudden Tomcat Death

We have 3 identical servers (IBM x345) runing Red Hat Linux ES 3 with 6 Gb of memory and each server runs 3 Tomcat instances, two that uses about 1-1.5 Gb of memory and one that uses about 150 Mb.
    (Java 1.4.2_03-b02)
Everything runs smothly for a random time (about 2-5 days) and then a random Tomcat instance just disapears with no trace. There is absolutely nothing in Tomcat logs, our application log or the operation systems logs.
Has enyone else seen something like this before?
Really could use some hints here!
    // Robert

No idea what the problem could be but you could try starting the instances of tomact using the 'catalina run' command. Start each instance in it's own command window using the catalina run command. Then when one instance fails you may be able to view any error codes in the command window.

  • Sudden Internet Death Mystery

My internet connection stopped working last night-- modem was green lit in all the right places, the airport express was green lit, but nothing. I plugged the ethernet cable from the airport express into the computer, and voila-- I'm on line.
BUT...when I plugged the cable back into the Airport Express, it flashed green, then gave me blinking yellows and no internet. I tried with another Airport Express unit...and the same thing happened.
Plugged into the computer, the DSL works just fine. Plugged into the AE's, it's gone. This is the same cable and same setup that's worked fine for the last 12 months.
I upgraded the AE's firmware to 6.2, tried a hard reset, but they still don't see the internet. Does this sound familiar to anyone? I'm running 10.4.2 with the most recent security update.

    So,
The phone is absolutely not the problem, I disconnected it and the problem remains...after about 30 to 60 min the internetconnection drops down to a max of 10 KB/s (normally=370 KB/S) download ratio. I tried a Soft, Hard and factory reset (over the last 2 days) and the problem remains. I disconnected the modem and the AE, waited 10 min, reconnected the modem, waited 5 min, reconnected the AE and everything works fine for about 1 hour, then the connection goes down again....I have to do a restart on the iBook to reestablish the connection each time, simply shutting off and on the Airport-connection in the system prefs doesn't help. I really don't know what else I can try anymore...Is there a method to reverse the airport upgrade? Also, I can tell right away wen the connection drops, my pointer behaves really odd and moves about at double speed over the screen when I'm touching the touch pad, at this moment, my connection is down and I have to perform a restart on the iBook to get the normal speed on the internet again.
    Thx for any help.

  • Sudden battery death

I have now twice experienced my i-Pod touch going instantly from a full battery to less than 10% battery.
    WiFi is off.
The first time I was not using the i-Pod - when I went to use the calendar, I found the thing had turned itself off and it would not turn on again.
The second time, I was listening to music. I had just started to listen to the first song when suddently switched itself off and, again would not turn on again.
When plugging the thing back into my computer, the message was that the battery was at less than 10% power.
Both times the battery had been fully charged that day but had not been left plugged in overnight or for a length of time longer than required to power up the battery.
The only suggestion I've come up with it that I was using the same bag on each occasion (not one in which I normally keep my i-Pod) and it has a magnetic clasp. However I the bag I usually use has a magnetic clasp and this does not seem to affect the battery - could the magnet in my other bag be stronger and therefore make a difference?
Any ideas? The rest of the time the battery lasts ages, unless I'm playing games or the weather is very cold.

I've experienced something similar on about 4 occasions.
Every time the iPod has been fully charged (or at least ~75%) and left overnight with wifi off.
Each morning I've gone to use it and it's dead, battery completely drained - so much so it's reset the date to Jan 1st 2000.
It's interesting that you mentioned magnets as I was wondering if the magnets in my case may be effecting it somehow.
However, this current iPod is a replacement (1st one had a broken headphone jack) and I never experienced this problem with my original one using the same case with the magnets.
I've just updated to 2.2.1 so I'm really hoping this will fix the problem and that it was just a software issue all along!
BTW, which firmware were you using when this happened? I was using 2.2, 1g 32gb Touch

  • OSX 10.4.11 and LP 7.2.3 = Stable ???

I'm currently running LP7.1.0 on OSX 10.4.7 and I'm quite happy.
The only 2 main issues i have are that Logic crashes when i record enable a track from Logic Control (apparently fixed in 7.1 and the SIDS (Sudden Instrument Death Syndrome) bug!!!
So does 7.2.3 solve the SIDS bug ?
What other advantage would i have by updating both OSX and Logic 7
I cant afford to upgrade to L8 yet.
Please share ur OSX10.4.11 and LP7.2.3 experiences here.
    Thanks
    Faisal

    Hi Faisal
Running 7.2.3 on OSX 10.4.10. Very happy. This is the most stable system has been ever!
Like many here I've had system or LP trouble with various updates. Won't make that mistake again.
There is nothing on offer FOR ME PERSONALLY to make me want to take further updates. And from reading this site daily - I think there are still issues out there with OXS 10.4.11 or Leopard or LP8.
    I could be wrong.
Again ... 7.2.3 on OSX 10.4.10 has no issues with SIDS or other issues that I know of. Very very happy. "Touch wood",

  • HOW DO U UPDATE TO 7.1

newbie here...my apple store only carries logic pro 7.0...i got it yesterday..i also had to purchase the 7.1 update disk..yea i know..what u r thinking...ok anyways how do i go about updating 7.0 to 7.1?...do i first install 7.0...then run the program...then install the new 7.1?...the apple web store a few weeks ago said 7.1 disks were suppose to be shipping in the 7.0 box already...well i guess not all stores got it..so pls can anyone tell me the procedure for install 7.1 ontop of 7.0..thank u..this is a new install never used..and whats this about 7.2???

How do you update to 7.1.
Well first you should mentally prepare yourself that upgrading to 7.1 or even 7.2 is not going to end your troubles.
1.) Be sure you do not edit multiple tracks in the matrix editor at the same time. This will result in the dreaded "not enough memory available" error that will destroy your project and make you lose hours of work.
2.) Be sure you are aware of SIDS (sudden instrument death syndrome) and that there is a great probabilty that you will become of victim of it.

    Another Joke implemented ???

It was a bugfix announced with the release of 7.2.1. SIDS was around for years. "Sudden Instrument Death Syndrome" or something to that degree.
What happened was (for example) an Audio Instrument would just go to sleep. It would not respond to any incoming events. If SIDS struck, you needed to reload your session. For some people it was huge, I have had it but it was never as continuously madening as 7.2.1. 7.2.0 has been the best on my system though for the 7.x versions.
