Sudden Kernel Panic
In researching the root of some problems I've been having with my camera and iPhoto (see: Strange SM Card action)
I just had my PB lock up with a kernel panic...

This happened as I shut down iPhoto, then selected the mounted card in the Finder window and ejected it. So far, so good. I then removed the card from the reader - but not the reader's USB cable from the USB port - and then inserted the MiniSD card sleeve into the reader. Then I removed the USB cable from the USB port - and got the Kernel Panic.
I'm assuming that inserting the MiniSD card sleeve and then removing the Card Reader caused this... but want to be sure...
Can anyone explain? Thanks.

I don't think so. Why because:
Then I removed the USB cable from the USB port - and got the Kernel Panic.
It was removing the cable that caused the panic. Possible causes: a short in the cable when you removed it, a shot against the case of the Mac, damaged cable, faulty USB port... or just one of those things that happen sometimes.
I wouldn't worry about it. But next time I used that cable I would watch and se if the issue repeats.

MacBook Pro mid-2012 : Slow. Sudden kernel panics. Random Restarts.
My mid 2012 MacBook Pro 15" (Running Mavericks) has recently been getting slower, performance-wise. Apps such as Safari, MS Office and OSX Mail are increasingly frequently - not always - hanging and performing sluggishly.
The sudden kernel panics are now causing me headaches. It's frequently when I am composing email messages in Mail when the system freezes, the cursor vanishes and I have to hold down the power key to force restart.
Usually the system will restart and shortly thereafter, suddenly shut down and restart.
The underside of the laptop is extremely hot to touch. I cannot hear the fan.
I have been in touch with Apple online support who suggested a number of possible fixes, which I tried. These seemed to make little difference. I have not however taken the final suggestion to wipe my machine entirely and reinstall Mavericks. I am now feeling I should do this. If any helpful soul here could provide me with any insight or advice, I would be terribly grateful. Should it be of any help, I am pasting my last crash report below. Many thanks
Edit: It happened again just while I was writing this! Grey startup screen had strips of white text on black bars all the way down the left side. What on earth is the matter with this laptop!

Sudden kernel panics without any apparent reason
My iMac (24" 2.8 Ghz) works fine for weeks, then suddenly begins to generate without apparent reason kernel panics (screen goes blank with warning that it needs to be shut down and restarted). I usually resolve this by swapping RAM banks, and it works fine for a while, then the panics come back again. I was wondering if anyone was experiencing a similar issue.

It sure sound like something is wrong with one or both those ram modules,
It may be heat related, or it's not seated firmly enough and it eventually works free. Or it just could be an intermittently bad spot in the module that only shows up infrequently.
try installing and running one of them at a time to find a bad one.
Run the Apple Hardware Test you got with your iMac and set it to do the long test. Loop it if you can (I think there's a check box for that) and let it run for a long time, maybe even overnight. See if it shows any errors.

Kernel panics and grey screen on startup
Hello savvy bunch,
I recently acquired a wonderful little Core Solo mini. My plan was to
run it starting up from a 400GB hard drive in an external FW enclosure
that has another 200GB drive I was going to use for backups. Long
story short, the 400GB drive starting giving me weird Finder problems
and such. Booting from the internal HDD in the mini fixed everything.
Then it started having sudden kernel panics at random moments (I could
be writing an email, browsing on Safari, whatever), after which upon
restart I get an empty grey screen that lasted forever. I tried
several fixes, and the only one that worked was unplugging the FW
enclosure. I erased and fixed both external HDDs, and things calmed
down for a while, but I just had another kernel panic-grey screen
episode, which I solved turning off the FW enclosure.
I remember now that I had similar problems before with the same
enclosure/HDDs and my Quicksilver. Could the problem be the enclosure,
or the hard drives themselves?
TIA,Oh, don't worry, I know and use all the right protocols for mounting and unmounting FW drives. They only get turned off AFTER they are dismounted. Of course now I realize that you wouldn't think so the way I described what I was doing. (That was some lazy writing, I guess.) I also have several external drives in use with several other computers. It's this particular enclosure that seems to be trouble.
As far as brands go, this is some kind of generic two-drive enclosure I got from OWC on a big sale a while back. I cannot find a brand name for the life of me (and I have looked all over it). I have not had a lot of luck with two-drive enclosures. This is my second (the first one was I think a Newertech or some other OWC brand, which died very quickly on me. The HDDs survived and are still in use.)
As for Lacies, Smokerz, you are completely right. My first FW enclosure ever was a Lacie, and it's still going strong. I have my eye on a Lacie 1TB enclosure that's in Newegg for $99... -
Kernel panics after installing OS X Maverics
After i installed OS X Maverics I have experienced ocationally unexpected kernel panics. Other then that Maverics seems to function well, and I had no problems with the installation. Because of this I formatted my harddrive and installed everything again, but still the kernel panics occur. What to do?
I tried searching the web for a solution, but non of the solutions seemed to help me. I have no kernel extensions installed.
I can't see any patterns for when the kernel panics occure, or what causes them.
I'll post the latest crash log here. I really hope someone can help me with this one.

..Step by Step to fix your Mac
It might have to do with the way Safari works on the Internet and the rash of attacks occuring
http://www.guardian.co.uk/technology/2013/mar/27/cyber-attack-spamhaus-slows-dow n-internet
I also booted up Safai today which I hardly use and it was incredibly slow as well.
I don't know if it's Safari or me not using it for such a long time.
If the above fixes don't work, all I can suggest is to use Firefox or whatever until this attack thing blows over and see after that. -
My macbook from 2008 which I bought used worked fine for 3 weeks and then suddenly it started restarting and now it restarts, goes to grey apple screen and a code saying something about a kernel panic appears and it restarts again and again. Help?
Restart the computer and immediately hold the Option key down.
Select the Recovery partition and continue.
On the next pane, select Disk Utility and continue.
When DU opens, select your hard drive in the left column, click the First Aid tab, the click Repair Disk.
When that is done, quit DU and restart in the usual way. -
Suddenly my kernel panics or system freezes after loging in
My new MBP worked fine for about a month. Then, 2 days earlier it longer shutdown times than normally. But everything was still working. Suddenly I couldn't view flashvideos in firefox although I heard the audio. Then I got beachballs when trying to look into my emails (with "Mail") and couldn't start *.mov-files with Quicktime. Then I also got beachballs when I selected files in the Finder. After a while these beachballs disappeared (but they kept coming back). At this I time I already had some kernel panics.
After repairing permissions with the harddsik utility-program I got kernel panics one after the other and now I can only startup in Safe-mode, since everytime I log myself in the system freezes or a kernel panic starts the MBP new.
Does anyone have any ideas?
Here is the latest Kernel-Log:

Suddenly frequent kernel panics
My Mac Pro (Model MacPro1,1, Dual-Core Intel Xeon, 3 GHz, 5 GB RAM) suddenly started with kernel panics today.
In the last time I didn't change anything at this machine so I'm really helpless in finding a cause for these kernel panics.
I use this machine to rund my live radio show at the weekends and it would be the worst case if it would panic during the show.
I have installed Pro Tools HD hardware, but this never made any problems since the last six years.
The only thin I did is to change Mac OS from 10.6.8 to 10.7.5 five weeks ago.
I wonder if anyone can help me finding the issue. Here are two of the panic logs.
The first one:

MatthiasSummary:
My Mac Pro (Model MacPro1,1, Dual-Core Intel Xeon, 3 GHz, 5 GB RAM) suddenly started with kernel panics today.
I have installed Pro Tools HD hardware, but this never made any problems since the last six years.
The only thin I did is to change Mac OS from 10.6.8 to 10.7.5 five weeks ago.

New 2GB FBDIMMs run cooler and are now higher quality and almost cheap.
Remove any small older FBDIMMs. Your 2x512 and 4x1GB are not worth keeping - also 6 DIMMs is not ideal config.
An SSD like Samsung 840 is a great way to improve performance.
I use one on SATA2 port and it made a huge difference even from older SSD
I also put an SSD on Sonnet PCIe card to hold high access media library.
4x2GB should be new normal minimum, or 8x2GB (ie, either $64 or $128 for full set)
Lion: best if you do not or did not upgrade in place over 10.6.8 SL. A lot of problems avoided and insures you finally are not carrying older and PowerPC/Rosetta code. -
Kernel Panics, Sudden Logout and Apple Hardware Test
Hello,
I have been experiencing Kernel Panics and Sudden logouts twice a week. I thought it was strange, because my boss just bought me the MacMini with 8gb RAM preinstalled.
I want to solve the problem, but I don't want to send my machine to support in vain.(because the MacMini is actually owned by the institution I work in, and those things take time).
So I ran some diagnoses I heard about on the internet, but I don't know what they mean, or what I should do with it.
I made two kind of diagnoses:
I tried to run Quick Apple Hardware Test.
I tried to run Mac version of memtest in single-user mode.
I made both diagnoses with each memory separatedly, in every slot combination possible, and both memories together.
Everytime I tested both memories together, AHT froze while testing memory, and memtest resulted in failures.
Everytime I tested a memory module separatedly, memtest and AHT gave no errors.
Is there any explanation for my Mac Mini not like my both memory modules together?
I updated OS X to 10.7.3 with combo update, and FileVault(don't know it makes any difference).
I made all tests with no peripherals other than a DVI monitor on HDMI out, a Magic Mouse, and a Apple (wired) Keyboard.
What should I do?
Should I send it to support and spend my next month without a machine? If you're able to boot, launch the Console application in any of the following ways:
☞ Enter the first few letters of its name into a Spotlight search. Select it in the results (it should be at the top.)
☞ In the Finder, select Go ▹ Utilities from the menu bar, or press the key combination shift-command-U. The application is in the folder that opens.
☞ If you’re running Mac OS X 10.7 or later, open LaunchPad. Click Utilities, then Console in the page that opens.
Select the most recent panic log under System Diagnostic Reports. Post the contents — the text, please, not a screenshot. For privacy’s sake, I suggest you edit out the “Anonymous UUID,” a long string of letters, numbers, and dashes in the header and body of the report, if it’s present (it may not be.) Please don't post "shutdownStall" or "hang" reports.
If you can't boot in the usual way, try a safe boot. The instructions provided by Apple are as follows:
Be sure your Mac is shut down.
Press the power button.
Immediately after you hear the startup tone, hold the Shift key. The Shift key should be held as soon as possible after the startup tone, but not before the tone.
Release the Shift key when you see the gray Apple icon and the progress indicator (looks like a spinning gear).
During startup, you’ll see a progress bar, and then the login screen, which appears even if you normally log in automatically. You must know your login password in order to log in. If you’ve forgotten the password, you will need to reset it before you begin.
Safe mode is slower than normal, and some things won’t work at all. -
THis morning when I came downstairs my iMac fans were roaring and I could not wake it up - after several minutes of trying I held the power key down to force poser off - when I restarted I got a kernel panic with the fans roaring before actually getting up and running
I force power offed again and this time it came up ok and ran until just a few minutes ago when I have another kernel panic
Here is the problem description from the error report to Apple
Anyone with any ideas on what to do to avoid continued kernel panics

Sudden onset Kernel Panic in a 1 year old MacBook Pro
Hey all. So my MBP has been running flawlessly since new. I've made no changes and yet began to encounter kernel panic on Friday. I've updated all software and that hasn't helped. Thankfully I've got multiple external backups so I'm safe, but still need to solve the problem. I ordered to new RAM chips today, thinking that might be it, and plan to order a new airport card if need be.
My system configuration is shown below. I'll post in a "reply" the content of 2 of the panic logs.
Any insight would be so incredibly appreciated.
Steve

Crash / Kernel Panic related to Sudden Motion Sensor (SMS)
I have been having frequent kernel panics on my Macbook Pro since replacing the hard drive. I recently realized that this appears to be related to moving or bumping the machine. For example, I was recently working while lying down resting the machine on my abdomen - when I sneezed, a kernel panic occurred (log below). Based on the log, I have decided to disable the SMS for a while (so far I have not been able to cause a panic with SMS disabled). I'm wondering if this is likely (1) a defective SMS, (2) an incompatibility between the hard drive and the SMS system, (3) an OS flaw (or something that could be fixed with an OS tweak, or (4) something else I'm not thinking of.

Sudden repetitive Kernel Panic | Mac Pro
Hi there
Today my Mac Pro has crashed repetitively while booting (during the grey and the blue screen) and after booting out of elementary finder actions (opening windows, moving windows). The crashs occur at the latest 10 minutes after a succesful boot!
What I've done so far (without success):
- Reset PRAM
- Reset SCM
- Booting from the MAC Pro Install CD (crashes also after some time)
Thanks for your ideas
boblima

FireWire Device: built-in_hub, Up to 800 Mb/secI started having the same type of kernel panics. The computer would run for a while then panic. Removed the hard drive and tested in a different computer. No Panics.
Mac Pro core 8 dou. Panic = IA32_MC3_STATUS(0x40d)
Okay, I used common sence and opened the door of the computer and placed an external fan pointing only at the hard drive logic board, vertical board in the computer. The fan was not able to cool any other part of the computer. The computer does not panic anymore. Used a thermal temperature (radio shack) point and click and found the Intel chip which controls the logic board to be operating over it normal temperature range.
Conclusion. The vertical I/O board requires replacement.
Local apple store does not understand that a computer must be burned in for testing thermal problems. Standard flow chart testing on the stores part. Will now have to bring the computer back to the store and demand a replacement board.
I am a hardware engineer and been designing logic boards for over 20 years. Apple care tech most likely have never seen a computer chip, let alone component level trouble shoot.
You may want to try the same test, Purchase a box fan from radio shack. aim the fan at the vertical logic board and let the fan run for 5 minutes then power up the computer and see if this fixes the problem, then have the board replaced. -
Hello, everyone!
My MacBook Pro 8,1 started experiencing kernel panics and reboots as of yesterday, June 14.
I updated to Mavericks in March 2014 from Mac OS X Lion.
I updated my RAM from 4 to 8 GB in the first decade of May.
I hadn't had any issues until the middle of June (at least one month).
Usually, it happens when I watch a video on YouTube.
However, it also happened (once for now), when I was scrolling inside the /Library in the Finder.
The crash report says:

Any help is appreciated.
Thank you in advance. The panics are probably caused by the memory you installed. However, you should as a precaution remove the worthless Kaspersky product.
Remove "Kaspersky Security" by following the instructions on this page. If you have a different version of the product, the procedure may be different. The product includes a Safari extension that may not be removed by the uninstaller.
Back up all data before making any changes.
