Sudden Kernel Panicking: MacBook 3,1; 4Gb; 10.5.4
Hi!
My Macbook suddenly started kernel panicking this afternoon. It's been very stable until this point. I'm primarily wondering what steps I ought to perform before contacting Apple, as I'm still within my 1-year warranty.
I've run a brief AHT run (with no results) and am letting the it loop over night. I'd not had any SMART indication on the hard drive or anything, though I have not tried to run disk utility yet.
The extra RAM I installed was installed in November or December when I first bought the machine. I did unplug my USB mouse and FireWire hard drive to make sure they were not related, though I've been using them consistently. I've not installed any new software recently that I can recall; the most recent (I think) was the 10.5.4 update, and some of the iPhone-related updates--although not iTunes 7.7. (I don't remember what exactly.) I'd used the machine all day without problems, until the panics started after I returned from a meeting.
The panic seems to be occurring after login, anywhere from 1 to 30 minutes, in my experience. At first I thought it was Safari, but that was not borne out in later testing.
Several of the kernel panic logs (at least in the automatic reporting tool) appeared garbled; one un-garbled one that I got off of the machine is as follows:

Well, the Disk Utility check didn't help--it froze again soon afterwards. However, my next step was to fun fsck from single-user mode. That didn't help either. But, I then did a SMC reset before booting again--by unplugging the AC adapter and the battery--and it seems that the computer is stable now. I had it on all night without problems. Hopefully, it will run throughout today, and I can consider it stable.
Is there anything in the kernel panic log that might be a pointer to a issue with the SMC?

MacBook Pro mid-2012 : Slow. Sudden kernel panics. Random Restarts.
My mid 2012 MacBook Pro 15" (Running Mavericks) has recently been getting slower, performance-wise. Apps such as Safari, MS Office and OSX Mail are increasingly frequently - not always - hanging and performing sluggishly.
The sudden kernel panics are now causing me headaches. It's frequently when I am composing email messages in Mail when the system freezes, the cursor vanishes and I have to hold down the power key to force restart.
Usually the system will restart and shortly thereafter, suddenly shut down and restart.
The underside of the laptop is extremely hot to touch. I cannot hear the fan.
I have been in touch with Apple online support who suggested a number of possible fixes, which I tried. These seemed to make little difference. I have not however taken the final suggestion to wipe my machine entirely and reinstall Mavericks. I am now feeling I should do this. If any helpful soul here could provide me with any insight or advice, I would be terribly grateful. Should it be of any help, I am pasting my last crash report below. Many thanks
Edit: It happened again just while I was writing this! Grey startup screen had strips of white text on black bars all the way down the left side. What on earth is the matter with this laptop!

Kernel panick upon startup blue screen
Hey everybody, new to the forum, hoping you all can help me out. I'm using a 15" macbook pro and every time I start it up, I get past the grey apple screen, but as soon as it gets to the blue screen and my mouse appears, I get a kernel panick. This happens every time it starts up. I can use boot camp and boot up in windows, but I am unable to use the OS X side of my hard drive. HELP!
Hi sig,
and thanks for the link.
I failed to mention earlier that when i try to start in safe mode, it does the same, first gray logo with spinning circle, and then blue screen.
On repeat, I have a MAC OS X installation disk, which allows me to use the utilities, but doesnt get verified at the end of the installation process.
is the backup and fresh install the only solution left since all listed on that page has already been used? thanks again.

I have a mid 2010 macbook pro with 4GB memory and need to purchase an additional 4 GB to. Do I need to purchase 8GB of memory to upgrade or can a 4GB upgrade be placed next to the existing memory?
You need to purchase 8 GBs as two 4 GB modules. Must meet these requirments:
Maximum Memory
8.0 GB
Memory Slots
2 - 204-pin PC3-8500 (1066 MHz) DDR3 SO-DIMM -
MacBook Pro. 4GB to 8GB Upgrade.
MacBook Pro. 4GB to 8GB.
Introduction
"Cost-Benefit Analysis"
Features
Boot Time: Is it affected by the upgrade?
Applications
Conclusion
1. Introduction
Greetings, today I am going to discuss the positive and negatives aspects about the
upgrade that many are tempted to perform, before during and after the purchase of an Apple
Personal Computer i.e. MacBook, MacBook Pro, iMac and so on.
I am going to use my first and recently bought MacBook Pro as a "guinea pig" today
by performing and reviewing the upgrade from 4GB of Random-Access Memory (RAM) to 8GB.
I hope you all enjoy it and that this review is useful to you as a guide to aid your decision
to upgrade or not.
Well let's get started shall we?
2. "Cost-Benefit Analysis"
We all know how expensive Apple Computers are for the vast majority of the population,
however I am sure if you are here you do appreciate, like me, the reasons why such cost,
but this is another discussion. Let me focus.
The first option we have right off the bat is to do the upgrade as we purchase the machine,
which is offered to you when you order online, through the phone or buy it directly from an
Apple Store.
I did consider upgrading directly with Apple for the obvious reasons but unfortunately
I wasn't able to this time, the £160.00* upgrade price was a little too high for me, not overpriced,
just a little too high for me. (* or $200.00 USD)
So here is what I have done: I have acquired the part from a third part company which
offered the so called upgrade for £59.99. So I decided to give it a go, before you ask my
warranty will not be voided as RAM and any user replacable parts DO NOT void your
equipment warranty as stated by Apple®.
As you can see the specifications of the product match perfectly what is already inside
a MacBook Pro. But obviously still won't be as good as the 8GB from Apple.
Now to the benefits. rest assured that this upgrade will not be noticed by all of you, and
what I mean by that is: If you only use your Mac for browsing the web or office suites, you do
not need this upgrade, however if you do heavy video or image processing or anything that
requires that little bit extra, you will notice the difference in performance baring in mind that
this model of MacBook Pro has no dedicated graphics card therefore upgrading is a fantastic
way to avoid "paging" and I think for 60 bucks that is a bargain.
3. Features
RAM is constantly used by the system, obviously, serving as temporary storage and
working space for the operating system and its applications.
You may or may not know that most computers use something called "virtual memory"
is a method that consists of a portion of the system's hard drive being set aside for use as
a paging file that extends ram capacity. I.e. 4GB of RAM + 1GB of Paging file gives a system
a total of 5GB of memory available. Obviously upgrading from 4GB to 8GB will enable you to
have more memory without "sacrificing" a part of your hard drive.
RAM is used in numerous others ways on a computer.
3.1 Boot Time: Is it affected by the upgrade?
| To be updated soon. |
3.2 Applications
| To be updated soon. |
4.0 Conclusion
| To be updated soon. |3.1 Boot Time: Is it affected by the upgrade?
I did not notice any differences, maybe some miliseconds more or less.
3.2 Applications
Applications it's a hard one to speak about, it seems to me that the system is coping more easily with tasks that require that little extra. Video and Photo editing and so on.
4.0 Conclusion
Is it worth it? The truth is for some people yes, for some definitely NOT. If you are looking for that little extra performance just to feel good about it, definitely do it! However if all you do is browse the web and the odd word processing and a few presentations a month, it may not be that beneficial for you. I believe that if you truly want some serious performance, look for the power processing first i.e. Get a 15'' or a 17''; even though they are a bit more expensive they are recommended for video editing and tasks that require high speed and performance.
In terms of where to buy it from, I found that buying from the third party company Crucial was no different than what would have been from Apple itself, it is EXACTLY the same memory, I compared them both side a side and all the specifications and manufacturers where the same on the 4GB and the 2GB unit.
Few things though guys:
Please be sure to use a good quality Phillips #00 Screwdriver, you DO NOT want to damage those screws and you want to have ease on opening the machine.
Please only install quality RAM.
Please discharge yourself of any static by wearing a Static Bracelet or touching a metal surface inside the computer.
Please be sure to turn OFF the computer "Shut Down", I repeat do NOT put it to sleep, SHUT IT DOWN.
Please be patient; do not rush things.
That's it for my adventure Upgrading my MacBook Pro RAM, guys I hope you enjoyed, sorry about the delay and enjoy your 8GB MacBook Pro, I certainly will.
If you have any queries please do not hesitate to contact me.

2008 Mac Pro Kernel Panicking Frequently
Guys, I'm throwing my hands up in the air. I'm at your mercy. Tell me to rub beets on the aluminum housing of the Mac Pro, and I will. Tell me to sing lullabies into my USB mouse, and I will. Tell me to reboot 3 times, and I will. I've come to that point
I've been experiencing a lot of kernel panics of late. Probably six kernel panicks today alone. This was happening on Mountain Lion as well as Mavericks, so I'm not going to jump on that train, but I'm really nearing the end of the easy fixes/obvious solutions to this problem.
What I've tried / What I think / What I've observed:
I've booted into apple hardware test and ran the long diagnostic, but nothing was found. I should add that since my computer doesn't have that hidden partition with AHT, I did have to boot off the old Leopard DVD that came with the computer. Not sure if its age makes a difference.
I've noticed that I can almost always reproduce the problem by downloading at high bandwidth rates. Today, I had my home internet speed bumped up, and minutes after starting some beefy downloads, the computer kernel panicked. As soon as it came back up, I resumed the downloads, crashed again.
One of my first thoughts was memory. I have four 2GB sticks of memory. I have tried swapping two of the four sticks out. Still crashed. Pulled those two out and put in the other two stick, still crashed.
I have a Samsung 840 250GB SSD drive. I've been running it without TRIM support but just today, installed Groth's TRIM Enabler. The computer has since crashed.
In addition, when I installed the SSD drive, about a year ago, I had to install the OS from scratch, so while I'm not ruling out any kind of OS corruption, it's not like the install is old. At the same time, I have to admit that I have not tried re-installing the OS, and if you guys ask me to, I will.
The next thing that I'm thinking of trying, but will be kind of a pain, is to replace the SSD with the original spinny disk, install Mavericks on there, and see how it performs. Can you guys recommend a good SSD tester to rule out the drive as the issue?
Any thoughts?
Thanks in advance!

Can I upgrade the ram memory of my Macbook air from 4gb to 8gb?
Anybody knows if I can upgrade the ram memory of a Macbook Air from 4gb to 8gb?
Welcome to Apple Support Communities
The memory in the MacBook Air is soldered onto the logic board, so you can't upgrade RAM after buying your computer. It's important to buy your MacBook Air with the amount of memory you will use because you won't be able to install more RAM -
Kernel Panicking Suite of Macs? - help needed
I have just joined a college and have been given ownership of the Imacs - something I am quite new to.
Since students have come back after summer there has been issues with the 2008 Imacs in one of our rooms, they keep kernel panicking at random intervals.
They all have the same software running, and seem to take it in turn to panic and require a reboot. We get at least one a day, here is 2 reports I've pulled off 2 different macs.
As I say I'm new to macs, so unsure what is causing the panics - can anyone shed any light on this for me?

I was doing a

after a fresh install, and while installing Vimo(or something) it was at 99% and my comp restarted, and now it comes up as a kernel panick. Please helpharlekin wrote:Just edit the corresponding line in /etc/grub/menu.lst.

Two identical mac pros, both kernel panicking under heavy load
I have two nearly identical Mac Pros that Ive been using to the scientific calculations. They both have 32GB of OWC (non Apple) memory, 4x 2TB hard drives in RAID 5, and 2x quad core 2.26 GHz Nehalem cpus. Both are running full patched 10.6.2.
On each of them I run a single multithreaded process that gets the cpu usage up to 1500+% and uses 10-20 GB of memory. The process also hits the hard drives pretty heavily (it is java, however, so I'm not doing any odd low level system stuff).
Every few days under this load, one or the other of them will kernel panic. Usually it happens when I also do something else on the machine (like scroll a web browser), but sometimes I wake up and found one has kernel panicked over night. The panics are usually "thread_invoke: preemption_level -1, possible cause: unlocking an unlocked mutex or spinlock" on the process kernel_task, but Ive also had one referring to an error on the RAID card.
On both machines I've run memtest for days on end and it never finds any errors. But if it was a hardware problem I'd expect only one to have problems anyway. Could this be a java problem? No matter how poor my programming is, nothing I do from java should be able to kernel panic the machine, right? Does anyone know of people actually using mac pros under these kinds of conditions?smeister989 wrote:
Using a temperature monitor, I am noticing something odd. Both machines are using about 1500% cpu, but on both machines the temperatures for CPU A are about 10-12 degrees (C) higher than on CPU B. Does this make any sense? What is the safe operating temperature for these machines? I'm seeing ~ 58 degrees C for the CPU A heatsink, and 68 degrees C for the CPU A temperature diode.
If I had to guess, I would say CPUA is the first in line for airflow, meaning it probably has a thicker coating of dust on it.
Dust is an excellent insulator, which unfortunately does not work in your favor.
I would shut the machines down, open them up and carefully inspect for dust.
And don't put your Mac on the floor! It will suck up way more dust than if it's on your desk or off the floor by at least a couple of feet. Dust is evil, and people underestimate it's affects - but if you are pushing your machines, and it sounds like you are, even a light coating of dust can cause uneven temperature spikes and hardware problems. And for the memory too! Apple memory has heatsinks for a reason - ensure they are dust free as well as the CPU heatsinks. -
Macbook pro 2011 keeps kernel panicking intermittently
My new macbook pro keeps crashing every hour to day. I have lost a great deal of work as a result, and this problem is really starting to get aggravating. I have done numerous reinstalls from the lion dmg imaged to a usb drive and this problem will not go away. I have an ssd and have upgraded the ram to 8gb. I ran ram tester in single user mode 4 times and it found now problems. I am at a loss of how to proceed. The following is the kernel panic infomration given on reboot:

You have multiple virtualization systems loaded, any one of which is capable of causing this crash, especially if they are not absolutely up to date. You should make up your mind and use ONE virtualization system { VMWare, Parallels}.
Anti Virus software is a personal preference, but is it also completely up-to-date?

<Personal Information Edited by Host>You have a Mac with a known GPU fault. The logic board must be replaced.
There was a three-year free repair policy, but that has since expired.
If you have an Apple Store, you might be able to convince them that you were unaware of the problem since it didn't manifest until you upgraded (which it didn't for many people with the same Mac).
They had an article posted describing the issue, but it has been removed and replaced with this: MacBook Pro (15-inch, Mid 2010) intermittent black screen or loss of video Quality Program has ended - Apple Support
When you take it in for service, make sure they test for that specific problem as it won't show up on their normal tests.
You can prevent some of the kernel panics by using a program to force the Mac to only use one or the other cards. I'm not sure which one has the fault in it. https://gfx.io -

Kernel panic macbook pro 15 late 2013
Hello
I have a Macbook Pro 15, late 2013 Retina, and I found in the last month on two occasions with unexpected blockage in my computer, grey, restart and subsequent error message screen. In none of the two occasions I was performing tasks that demand high resources, only listening music from iTunes (via Airplay), surfing the internet and retouching an image in preview (for Mac app).
I would appreciate any help on which could be the reasons for this event.
Thanks in advance. Regards!
