Sudden macbook snow leopard failure

Man am I in trouble! I haven't backed up my stuff in quite some time and my MacBook Pro (2008 version) running latest Snow Leopard fails to boot. (I have called tech support and am awaiting further response) I can boot in safe mode and use firewire from an iMac to MacBook (target), but many of my files have suddenly become 'corrupt' and will not transfer correctly. I planned on doing a clean install but need to get my info off. I bought Disk Warrior and hoped that would do it - no luck, said my stuff was unrepairable. I have obviously tried to do archive and install from SL but to no avail - it failed. Disk Permissions fail from Disk Utility (although the Disk Repair said the HD was fine). I have NO CLUE how this forrest fire started.
Any help would be MUCH appreciated.
Blessings,
Jackie

The Mail version for your machine is 4.6 (1085)   You can get it via the Combo updater.  Mac OS X 10.6.8 Update Combo v1.1
Then follow with software updates to pick up the most recent security and iTunes updates.

  • HT3910 Can I use Mac OS version 10.5.6 to install on MacBook Snow Leopard version 10.6.8?

Can I use Mac OS X Install DVD and Application DVD, both version 10.5.6 to install on MacBook Snow Leopard version 10.6.8?
    Thank you

Only if those disks are the ones which shipped with the computer. Retail packages never came with an Applications disk. If they are, install them onto a blank partition or drive.

  • RAM issues with MacBook & Snow Leopard

Hey everybody. My mom bought Snow Leopard the other day and just went to install now, but her MacBook told her she needed more RAM. Is there any way we could clear some space up or something and not have to get a physical upgrade? Thanks.

RAM is the physical memory installed in the computer, not the space on the hard drive. Apparently the computer does not meet the minimum system requirements:
    Snow Leopard General requirements
Mac computer with an Intel processor
    1GB of memory
    5GB of available disk space
    DVD drive for installation
Some features require a compatible Internet service provider; fees may apply.
Some features require Apple’s MobileMe service; fees and terms apply.
You will have to upgrade the computer's RAM. I recommend not less than 2 GBs for Snow Leopard.

  • How to migrate user's data from Panther G3 to MacBook Snow Leopard?

Migration Assistant isn't helping at the moment. Over the network, it just spins saying "looking for other computers" even though I've seen and acted on http://support.apple.com/kb/HT3253  -- although that doesn't relate to Panther so it isn't right for that. Anyway, so I forget doing it over the network.
I copy two users' entire directories on the Panther G3 machine to an external hard drive. I plug that into the MacBook, open Migration Assistant and choose from a disk. Now it just spins indefinitely where it's supposed to allow me to select the disk -- it can't even show the disk (the disk has mounted fine).
I'm now thinking Migration Assistant is completely useless -- better not touched?
So I haven't got a clue how to get two users from a G3 machine to the new MacBook. Any suggestions? Thanks.

Interestingly, it looks like a mounted disk image of a full system is recognized by Snow Leopard's Migration Assistant. Although the disk image is not bootable, it presents as a separate volume "with OS X installed", and apparently this is enough.
One of my external drives contains a  sparsebundle disk image of my oid G5 Leopard Mac that I created with either CCC or SuperDuper just before that computer died. I just tried mounting it by double-clicking it, and then running Snow Leopard's Migration Assistant, choosing the option to migrate "From a Time Machine backup or other disk." The mounted volume was recognized as a "disk", and all its contents were accessible as items to migrate. I didn't actually run it.
CCC makes it easy, though, to protect the other stuff as you suggested and then clone to the whole partition rather than to a disk image.

  • Struggling to restore from Time Machine (2007 MacBook; Snow Leopard)

The hard drive failed on my 2007 MacBook. I had it replaced and the shop also installed Snow Leopard (this was what  I was using prior to the fail).
I tried a restore from Time Machine and while a huge chunk of my new hard drive disappeared,  I couldn't locate the files. I have since found them in the hidden /Volumes folder.
I have also learned that to do a full restore,  I should have used my Snow Leopard install disk alongside the drive with Time Machine backups.
    So...
    1. Should I delete the restored file in the /Volumes folder and start again using the Snow Leopard install disk?
    2. I want to upgrade to Lion (this is the furthest I can go with this MacBook). Can  I do step 1 using a Lion install disk even though the Time Machine backup was created in Snow Leopard? (Confession: I'm not sure where my Snow Leopard disk is and I'm trying to avoid going through cupboards and boxes to find it)
    3. is it laborious and risky to try to restore everything manually from the /Volumes folder? Where do  I start if I decide on this route?
Thanks in advance for any advice.

I would try recovering the files manually first. If the result is unsatisfactory, then I'd boot up using the Snow Leopard DVD, run Disk Utility/Repair disk, erase and reformat the drive, and then install Snow Leopard. Reboot normally, and use Setup Assistant to restore from Time Machine. Completely update to 10.6.8 and then consider if you want to upgrade to Lion. There are no Lion disks - it is a download.

  • Sulky Macbook Snow Leopard Blues

    Hi all
    I have a problem with a Black MacBook 2.4ghz.     2.5mb ram
It was running very smoothly with Leopard, but I upgraded to snow leopard, first using the generic snow leopard installer DVD and then the updater, bringing it to 10.6.8.
Also then I ran software update to bring everything else up to date too (apart from iTunes.. i like cover flow so stick at iTunes 10)
Since then problems........ it boots, and 'appears' to be fine - I get to desktop etc fairly quickly (about 90 seconds.. much slower than Leopard was, but i can live with 90 seconds)
However once it is booted I am locked out - the track pad moves the cursor, but will not click for about 4 or 5 minutes ... then it starts working and I have a functioning Macbook as normal.
I have of course tried plugging a USB mouse into it too, and the same 4-5 minute wait happens,
Sometimes when it boots blue screen lasts about 4 or 5 mins and then it boots normally to desktop.. it seems like that 4 or 6 min period is a dead zone for it, either cos it's stuck in blue screen, or stuck on an unresponsive desk top.
Only other problem is it will not start from sleep .. close the lid on it and it's dead.. no amount of time will get it to wake up and no amount of key pressing will either.. I have to do an emergency restart and then wait for it to go through it's 4 or 5 minute wake up sulk again.
No eithernet ports work either - but that may or may not be connected .. I dont know if they did whenit had leopard on it  as I never tried them - So I only have USB on it.
I've done all the basics - zapped the Pram, re set nvram, started up from DVD and ran repair disc and permissions
I'm at the stage of thinking I ought to wipe the HD and go back to Leopard but I would like to use snow leopard as there are some apps I want to use onit that wont run on basic leopard
    Any help gratefully received
    Blessings to all
    Nick

    Well what happened is this.
You upgraded from 10.5 to 10.6 on a very full boot hard drive, this has the unfortunate effect of writting 10.6 to the slower parts of the drive, the area that hasn't been used enough yet so the little bad bits haven't had a chance to be mapped off by the driver firmware.
Snow Leopard is the fastest OS X verison of 10.5, 10.7 and 10.8, however only if freshly installed or  cloned (you'll see later)
So to resolve your issue, which I assume you want to keep any 10.5 installed software. (as a erase and install of 10.6 will wipe it off, also you may find out that 10.5 won't boot from the disk anymore since it's a outdated OS X version.)
Ok, this is what you do.
1: Copy your users folders of music, pictures, documents etc., to a regular external drive (no TimeMachine drives for now) disconnect so there isn't a mistake made.
    Most commonly used backup methods
2: Next you run through this list of fixes as best as you think is necessary and fix all your software on the machine so it's working like a peach.
..Step by Step to fix your Mac
3: Next you do this defragmentation User Tip, this will reduce your users files on the drive so your under 50% filled, then you reverse clone 10.6.8 back on, which will place all the files together and optimize your boot hard drive in the process.
How to safely defrag a Mac's hard drive
4: Lastly you pick through this User Tip how to speed the interface, use a tweaked browser and other tricks to get the maximum performance out of your lovely Snow Leopard.
    For Snow Leopard Speed Freaks
5: Don't consider going any further in the OS X verisons, your machine is rather dated for the Lions etc. and you'll have to buy much of all your software new versions as well as going without older PPC ones.
Snow Leopard has 25% market share still, it is getting updates and I expect it to do so for antoher couple of years at least.
OS X 10.4/10.5 need to upgrade, 10.6.8 ok still
However if you do want to erase and install Snow Leopard

  • MacBook, Snow Leopard & iPhoto'09

There have been several posts regarding Snow Leopard and graphics corruption, yet none seem to relate to the problems I'm having (or I haven't found one yet).
I have recently upgraded my mid-2007 MacBook (2.16GHz C2D, 4GB RAM) to Snow Leopard and updated to 10.6.4 (using the combo update) and also upgraded iLife to '09.
My problem occurs when using iPhoto'09 (8.1.2) to edit a photo. The display corrupts and the whole GUI locks up yet the machine is visible on the network with volumes and files accessible. The only way out of the graphics freeze is to power off. Following posts in the iPhoto forum, I have reinstalled iPhoto, repaired the library etc. etc.
Interestingly this also happens on my MacMini. Both these machines have the embedded Intel GMA950 graphics controller.
In an attempt to diagnose this, I installed SL & iLife on a USB HDD. Clean install from the retail disks, combo update for SL and Software Update for iLife. I get the same corruption when booting from this disk. Next up, I plugged this in to my daughter's MacBook (with an Intel GMS X3100 graphics controller) and it works fine.
So, I conclude that it's the GMA950 drivers that causes the issue.
Anyone got any thoughts, or a solution? (other than buying a new MacBook!)
    Thanks
    Steve

  • Need help with original MacBook, Snow Leopard, iPod Touch and iPad

I have the original MacBook (2GHz Intel Core Duo) and I just installed Snow Leopard.  My software is all up to date and my system drive has 42 GB of space available. I have an iPod Touch 32 GB 3rd Gen and iPad 1 32 GB that I previously have been syncing with an iBook G4 PowerPC with no problems.  The iPod is running iOS 6.
Now, I want to sync them with this MacBook but when I open iTunes and connect the iPod, I go to click Backup (to this Computer(or even to iCloud)), it gives me an error message that my computer does not have enough space to backup.  The iPod is only 17 GB full.  So, I tried clicking Sync, in an effort to just get my iPod data into my iTunes and on the computer that way.  But it only did a 3 step sync and didn't actually transfer anything from the iPod.  My iPod was NOT wiped clean however(which is what I was actually worried would happen).  So I gave up on the iPod.
Moving on to the iPad, I clicked back up and it WAS able to backup.  The Available space on my system drive went from about 42.8 GB to 42.25 GB, so I figured it may have done something.  Then I tried to Sync and it did the same 3 step sync and nothing was transferred to the computer and the iPad left untouched.
I am extremely new to Snow Leopard, so maybe I am missing something.  Does anyone have any idea what is going on?  Ultimately my goal is to just get everything from my iPod and iPad onto this MacBook.

See if yhis article helps with your sync and backup issues http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1386
Make sure that you click on each tab on the top of the iTunes window and select what you want to be synched.
    Authorize or deauthorize http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1420
As far as replacing the hard drive it's very easy, here's a guide http://www.ifixit.com/Guide/MacBook+Core+2+Duo+Hard+Drive+Replacement/514/1
IF you do decide to replace the hard drive you might consider a solid state drive, less power, less heat and WAYYYYY faster. I replaced mine with a Samsung 840 250GB SSD and it's the best upgrade I've ever done to a computer.

  • Macbook, Snow Leopard, Pro Tools 8 Firewire Conflict

I apologized in advance if this issue has already been posted, but I was unable to find it using the search function.
I have been getting a 6101 error while running M-Powered Pro Tools 8 (8.04)using 2 different M-Audio Firewire Interfaces (Firewire410 and Profire 610). I am only playing back 3 audio track w/no plug ins. CPU usage hasn't gone over 5% and I am getting a Hardware Buffer Error, whcih I have changed numerous times to no avail. I have a new, clean install of Snow Leopard, ProTools, and Interface Drivers with all of the latest updates. Hardware Settings: (1024 Samples, 1 Processor, 95% CPU Available)
However, I tried the M-Audio Fast Track Ultra USB 2 interface and have had no issues. I have ran through the session over 15 times and haven't had a crash.
Is there any known conflict between Snow Leopard, the firewire drivers and, the latest ProTools/M-Audio components? And, is there a workaround/new firewire driver that will fix this problem??
    Thanks,

Ok, that's what I have done... I have Snow Leopard Installed, 10.8.6 and it's got Boot Camp 3.0.4... my questionis the Mac Windows Install Drivers you add after installing Windows. Windows looks terribly awkward and I'm guessing it has something to do with the ATI graphics card sofware the mac disk installed. Is is ok to use the one I created years ago? I can't seem to find a place to create a new one using the 10.8.6 and 3.0.4.
When I orignially installed Boot Camp you had to create a disk using Boot Camp that you installed in Windows after the initial OS installation.

  • Macbook Snow Leopard Install Trouble

Just installed Snow Leopard on my macbook. Restarts and all i see is a white screen. I hear SL music and all the audio. Tried reinstalling SL using another comp in target mode.. same results. Wont boot into safe mode
    any thoughts...new HHD maybe?

Where did you obtain the Snow Leopard disc?  Have you tried reinstalling on the same computer (not using another computer in TDM?)  I would do this:
Repair the Hard Drive and Permissions
Boot from the Snow Leopard Installer disc. After the installer loads select your language and click on the Continue button. When the menu bar appears select Disk Utility from the Utilities menu. After DU loads select your hard drive entry (mfgr.'s ID and drive size) from the the left side list.  In the DU status area you will see an entry for the S.M.A.R.T. status of the hard drive.  If it does not say "Verified" then the hard drive is failing or failed. (SMART status is not reported on external Firewire or USB drives.) If the drive is "Verified" then select your OS X volume from the list on the left (sub-entry below the drive entry,) click on the First Aid tab, then click on the Repair Disk button. If DU reports any errors that have been fixed, then re-run Repair Disk until no errors are reported. If no errors are reported click on the Repair Permissions button. Wait until the operation completes, then quit DU and return to the installer.
If DU reports errors it cannot fix, then you will need Disk Warrior and/or Tech Tool Pro to repair the drive. If you don't have either of them or if neither of them can fix the drive, then you will need to reformat the drive and reinstall OS X.
Now continue with the installation.  This will not erase the hard drive.
