Sudden Network Instability

Up until last week I had my home network configured in the way described below and it worked fine. Without any changes that I'm aware suddenly I'm having trouble staying connected to my ISP.
I have a dual band network:
A Time Capsule connected via ethernet to my ISP. I have it set to "create a wireless network" (n speed 5 GHz). I use DHCP and have it set to "share a public IP address". The network called "adibiase" is extended at the other end of the house by an Airport Extreme n with "Fast Ethernet".
Connected to the Airport Extreme/Fast Ethernet that extends the n network is an older domed Airport Extreme. I use it to broadcast a network called "gdibiase" at g speed. It's set to "participate in a WDS network" and has its connection sharing set to "Off (Bridge Mode)".
I access the n network with a MacBook Pro. My wife access the g network with a iBook G4.
This all worked great until the n network started losing it connection to my ISP. Sometimes it works....but frequently now doesn't. At these times I could switch over to the g network which interestingly gave me a pretty fast connection. In fact, at times I've been finding it more efficient to work on the g network....it's more reliable (doesn't drop out as much) and actually at times seems faster than the n network.
I'm sure my configurations are not the best. But for a few months they did seem to work flawlessly.
Any suggestions will be appreciated,
Allan

  • WLC 2504 sudden network instability

    Hello,
we're running a WLC 2504 with two SSIDs on it. It is connected to to a small PoE switch. Standard untagged vlan. A handfull APs connected to it. No DHCP, the APs have all static IP addresses.
All of a sudden we're having a number of issues with the network connection:
    APs restarting
The APs restart every now and then reporting that their IP is being used by another device. Looking through the logs there are two MAC addresses that are reported as using the APs IP address. These two MAC addresses have unknown vendor IDs.
Warning: AP with Base Radio MAC f8:72:ea:7c:9d:e3 has found  its IP Address 0.2.146.0 being used by a machine with MAC
Address  04:c6:f8:40:00:00 (The other mac that is reported is 04:cc:90:40:00:00)
AP 'AP5', MAC: 0c:68:03:dd:1b:80 disassociated previously due to Link Failure.  Uptime: 4 days, 00 h 48 m 50 s . Reason: Capwap WTP Event request.
So: There are two MACs that use the IP addresses of 7 APs?!?! And there is no vendor to be found for these MACs?
Ping timouts on the webGUI and CLI
I have a ping running on the IP for managing the device. This is running fine for ages. As soon as I connect via webGUI or CLI I lose packets. Get timeouts etc. some packets get through some don't. More of the latter. So ping is fine but any other traffic seems to be impacted heavily.
What we have done for troubleshooting
Checked duplex/speed settings of the interfaces. Everything ok.
    Connected to another switchport. Same.
Changed the IP address of the management port. Same.
Swapped places with a laptop with the same IP address --> Worked fine.
Plugged in a completely new device, installed the latest firmware (7.6) and uploaded the config from the other one. Same.
Restarted the default gateway for the subnet the controler is on.
So now we're at the end of our knowledge. It seems to be a non-physical network issue, but we're a small team and no one has changed anything they say :-/
Any ideas what we could check next?
    Kat

    Hello,
thanks for your suggestions. It's hard to find those two MAC addresses. As they seem to be virtual I cannot get a hint from the vendor ID. A show mac-address table on the switch the WLC is connected to doesn't show those two
I found an error in the WLC AP config. AP1 had the same IP as AP5 and a wrong netmask. I changed that. Unfortunately that doesn't solve our problem.
Here are some more messages from the WLC's log:

  • Cross-platform network instability

I recently started a new job where everything is Apple, including the Airport Extreme. After investigating some to figure out how to configure the WEP key on both the Airport and my PC laptop, I was finally able to connect to the network.
Since then, however, the network has become unstable. The modem stays connected, but the Airport fails routinely - possibly releasing its DHCP settings. The failure doesn't seem to coincide with any operations, Mac or PC. My network/PC background is strong, but I never used Mac hardware prior to this week. As suggested by the Apple support page, I contacted our ISP and they reported no issues with 802.11-compatible wireless networks.
If anyone has suggestions, I'm all ears...

When you checked into the Extreme settings, did you use the Windows®
AirPort Utility (download from Support) or does someone else there admin
the base stations and keep it secure so as to not allow other non-admin
access? Friends and relatives who have PCs have no issues in connects
to my or other Apple AirPort Extreme Base Station networks.
If all the computers in the local wireless network use the 802.11/g setting
and the base station is set specifically for that (and not b/g) it should be
more stable and alot faster, but 802.11/b users would not have access.
There are several pages of AirPort Support documents; some are general,
a few apply to Windows & Mac users: http://www.apple.com/support/airport/
Hopefully someone with mixed platform experience will have a more direct
answer for you to check. Best of luck in this issue!
PS: Did you find an applicable software update for your PC
among these for working with AirPort base stations? There
are a few and maybe they are not needed; or they are.

  • Sudden networked printer issues cropping up.

Thai has been happening recently for several network users connected to network printers via static IP setup.  When someone sends something to the printer , it doesn’t automatically print.  Either we have to open the side tray and add paper or press the “OK” button a couple of times to get it print from Tray 2 in the bottom.  I have had had to go into Properties—Paper/Quality and select Tray 2.  For some reason its default changed (all was fine until recently).  Defaults wont stick.

Crud. Unfortunately I don't know too much about the print servers other than they're all or mostly Windows based. All these printers are connected through Ethernet, and need Windows Domain credentials to access (in Windows, you're normally just prompted).
One model is a Laser 8150dn (I think), which is one I have successfully set up by printing directly to it and bypassing the print server.
Another model is a Laserjet 4050 (on a different server, with the same issues), one's a Sharp copier of some sort (that also functions as a printer)-I think that's one that I CAN'T print to directly unfortunately, and I do use that to run off a bunch of printouts at once).
There's also a...shoot...Color Laserjet 4700 I think. It's Ethernet port is dead so it's hooked up directly through parallel to a regular XP Pro machine, just using normal sharing-I haven't been able to connect to it, though it was giving me somewhat different error messages than the rest (it at least prompted me for my credentials, which it wouldn't accept).
I was also planning on sharing an HP Desktop soon off of a regular Windows box, but now I'm wondering if my Macbook wouldn't be able to print to it if it's shared.

  • Watching DVDs on network, also network instability

I have DVD's backed up to an external HD connected to my AE(dual). Shouldn't that have enough bandwidth to watch these backups directly over the network on my MBP? Performance is stuttery and sluggish.
    Any other experiences?
In general I have a big problem with network consistency. My throughput can be as good as a sustained 7mbs, but very often, quickly drops to under 100kps. It averages about 500kps. Rebooting, resetting network components often gets it back up, shortly. Sometimes it just goes out completely and no devices are visible in Airport Utility. These need devices unplugged.
Tried various channels, bought a new non-interfering cordless phone, tried only using some components. Always the same result.
    Any advice on this one?

If you're talking about your wireless network the answer is no. The data rate required for watching DVDs varies, but MPEG-2 compression results in a bit rate pretty close to 7 Mb/s. The overhead for transmitting it wirelessly will require more. Forget about HD video.
You're definitely pushing the limit of your wireless network. I would not expect to successfully stream anything other than low quality video over any wireless network. A wired network is a different story altogether - connecting your MBP to the Extreme via Ethernet ought to be acceptable for streaming video.

  • Lesson Learned: Extreme Network Instability Root C...

I was having a massive amount of network stability issues with a replacement E7-00 (previous was broken) which did not have Anna--the one I replaced did have Anna.  My assumption was that the lack of update was the root cause, but after discovering yesterday that I couldn't use the web on my cellular network at all, I was forced to do a hard reset.
After doing the hard reset all my Wifi and 3G/3.5G stability and issues were gone.  I did not do the restore and instead have put everything back manually. This has been much more stable.
So I hope this saves someone else some misery and hours on the phone with support.

I had the same issue, hope this work for you too.
Make a file in /etc/X11/xorg.conf.d/ called 50-device.conf with this:
    Section "Device"
    Identifier "Default Device"
    Driver "radeon"
    Option "MigrationHeuristic" "greedy"
    Option "SwapbuffersWait" "off"

Seems to be a problem with glamor

  • WRT610N Wired Network Instability

Every day I have to power cycle my router at least once.
I keep seeing frequent disconnects from my network both wired and wireless.  What really doesn't make sense is that sometimes I lose connection from my network, but still I'm downloading from the internet.
Network Magic pops up saying I have lost connection from my network, and then 30 seconds later it pops saying it's connected again.  This cycle happens at least 10 times per day, that I've noticed.
Is there a setting I can change that might make my connections more stable?

On your Router setup page change the MTU size to 1350 and click on Save Settings.... Then click on the wireless tab and below change the Wireless Channel to 11 and let the wireless ssid broadcast should be enable and click on Save Settings.... Then clik on the advance wireless settings and below change the Change the Beacon Interval to 75,Change the Fragmentation Threshold to 2304,Change the RTS Threshold to 2304 and Click on Save Settings...
Now see if you can locate your Wireless Network and attempt to connect...
If still the same problem then you can try to update the firmware on your Router. Once the firmware on your router is updated then you need to reset your router and re-configure all the settings on your router from scratch.

  • Sudden network problem

Not sure where to post this. I have 2 MacBook Pro, 1 iMac, an iPad and an iPhone. Run everything through my Verizon wireless router. Never had a problem until today. I cannot access the weight watchers website on any of my devices. All other websites work fine. I can use my iPhone to access it if I turn off my wireless data. It's got to be a problem with the router. I spent an hour on the phone with my ISP provider. I rebooted the router and the modem, flushed the DNS cache, reset Safari and nothing is working. It is specific to this particular website. Has anyone heard of this problem? I can google and see where people have had a similar issue but I'm not sure how to fix it. I read something about hard coding the sites IP address into the router but I'm not sure how to do this.
    Anybody got a suggestion?

  • All of a sudden, unable to connect to internet

I can get on the net, but after a while I get the message that I can't connect. I click on network diagnostics and the problem resolves itself. All is good for a bit but then suddenly the issue arises again. I may go for a few days without this issue cropping up, but then it may happen 3 times during a surfing session. This issue has only recently started happening. I know this description is vague, but any ideas? Thanks.

If your connection is Ethernet, and Network Diagnostics is flagging Ethernet and everything else all-red, check and make sure that the connecting cable isn't nicked or pinched and that the cable ends aren't loose (try jiggling them near the connector or gently pulling and see if the network connection goes up and down (flashes red or green on Ethernet status indicator on left side of Network Diagnostics) with your jiggling/tugging. If it does, replace the cable. The cable should never pull out the port without clicking the unlocking tab on the connector. Often this tab is bent and ineffective at locking the cable into the port firmly or is broken off. In either of those cases, replace the cable.
If your connection is AirPort, make sure you don't have a boat-load of too many competing networks operating in proximity of the computer. A symptom of this is the number of networks viewable by AirPort from the menu bar. Confirming collaborating info is when the alt key + menu drop down shows your airport speed keeps changing every time you click it up. If your connection is truly stable, speed changes will be rare or never and should be close to theoretical maximums for the class of WiFi connections you setup (B= ~12 Mbps max, G= ~56 Mbps max, etc).. You I recently was forced to wire my connections to the AirPort Extreme hub I use because there are like 8-11 networks popping up any time I check using the menu bar Airport status menu drop down (use it with alt key held for a LOT more useful info including signal strengths and throughput speeds). If there are too many competing networks, the chaos caused by all of the various networks with automated settings for rolling channels when they find too much signal interference causes a cascade of network instability for all of the networks as they each keep changing channels to try avoiding each other and everyone's network connections start suffering or collapsing as a result. If you have a wireless issue like this and don't want the tether of a wired connection, consider talking to your neighbors about changing all of their wireless settings off of automated channel selections and sit down and everyone decide to pick a particular channel and stick with it so everyone's network connections can remain stable and usable until the next idiot ads a new WiFi network again and everything starts collapsing as his network starts stomping on everyone else's channels looking for a less busy one... Did I say wireless *****?
If Network Diagnostics tells you that ONLY the ISP, Internet and/or server connection is failing, look further upstream at your connection from your home or office to the net ISP itself. If it is a phone company DSL connection, consider getting a more reliable service like FiOS or Cable modem if available as DSL is notoriously unreliable and may go down frequently / randomly if you are any good distance from the phone company switching office in your locale. Cable and FiOS are generally very stable connections with FiOS being the most stable and fastest of all connection types available to consumers. If it is the Server only that is failing, that can also be a problem at your ISP which your only resort is to switch ISPs if they are so incapable of providing reliable service....
The only other problem can be using too many net-connected applications at once with wrong settings for throttling in the apps. When I had cable modem service, I used to cripple my household network so no computers could load anything if I used a fast Mac running a bit torrent client and failed to throttle the upload speeds of the app. It would saturate the upload link, then all the other Macs weren't able to get through their URL requests uploaded to receive webpages back because their URL queries simply got drowned out by the sheer volume of data being pumped out by the bit torrent software and a lack of bandwidth available to get out further data. Lesson here: Watch your upload speeds if you start having trouble with download speeds.

  • Time capsule not working as wireless base station suddenly

I have been using my time capsule as base station for wireless network in our house for some time and suddenly network is not working for all wireless devices in the house.  Desktop imac is connected to internet via ethernet cable through time capsule and works fine so I know problem is not with cable modem or signal coming to house.  Laptops appear to be connected to my network fine but when attempting to connect any site through safari or firefox I just get the spinning wheel thingy.

Check that the laptops are getting DNS and router (gateway) from the TC.. if not reset it and do the setup again.
What OS are you actually running on the laptops.. this problem started with Lion and is much worse in ML.. it is actually not a Snow Leopard issue which you list as the OS.

  • Network Magic thinks wireless router is wired.

Please tell me how to correct this issue.  Network Magic sees my wiresless d-Link router (DIR-601) as a wired network.  I have checked the router settings and everything says wireless.  How can I correct this?  thanks?

I turned on my computer today and all of a sudden Network Magic thinks that my computer is on a new network! It is NOT on a new network. I did some reading and it says that on the Network Map screen there should be something to click on to make your current network your home network - I see nothing.
So, how do you make your current network your home network when Network Magic thinks it isn't?

  • DB upgrade error

    Hi,
    I have a wierd problem.
I had ERP04 on Oracle 9.2.0.6. We are going to ERP05
So i was upgrading my DB to 10.2.0.2
I had completed all the prerequisites, installed 10.0.0.1 and upgraded to patch 10.0.0.2 according to DB upgrade guide.
I was running DBUA, it was upgrading and was around 10-12% complete.
Then suddenly network broke for a min or 2. And DBUA screen went off.
When I am starting to restart DBUA, it is working.
I changed again name back to my old DB in /etc/oratab.
Old DB is getting mounted but not getting opened.
My trace file under /oracle/RD1/saptrace/usertrace gives the below listed error
    ORA-00704: bootstrap process failure
ORA-00604: error occurred at recursive SQL level 1
ORA-01406: fetched column value was truncated
And alert log files says that there was an error shown in trace file above.
Is there anything i can do to solve this?
    Regards,
    Tajinder

    Hello Tajinder,
    > Is there anything i can do to solve this?
Unfortunately not. This problem is described in metalink note #427585.1.
Solution: Restore a cold backup of the database from before the upgrade attempt was made and then reaccomplish the upgrade
I had this issue once. Also restored the database and restarted.

    Hi,
Since you are able to connect, seems the issue with network instability.
    1) Create an RFC connection  and perform the connection test. Note down the time taken (milli seconds), a notable delay also can be the cause of the issue.
    2) Do the ping from Tibco system to SAP and note down the time taken
3)Also check the firewalls in between the two systems and check the valid access
You may need Nework admin teams help to cross check these.
    Regards,
    Syed
