Sudden overheating - even with dual-fan cooler

Hey everyone,
I have had the Compaq Presario CQ50 series laptop since 09.  For about a year the laptop was never used due to the hard drive failing.  I recently replaced the hard drive and put windows back on, but now there is a heating problem.  Without the external fans being used, the computer idles around 95C.  If I use the fan, which I always do, it idles around 70-75C.  Now if I decide to run a program such as a game, especially if it is full screen, the temp readings go to about 100C.
I bought some of the compressed air cans and cleaned all the vents out which helped a little bit.  Do you think it is due to the new hard drive?  I also don't know how to check if the internal fan is still working at full potential.

HELPED ME FIND THE PROBLEM!!!!
It was a client I had downloaded that was secretly running in the background apparently showing over 200% CPU usage!
I was able to uninstall it and now I'm down to suitable temps.
Thank you!!

  • Pavilion g6 overheating even with clean fan

Hi, I've a HP pavilion g6, product number: A5M45EA#ABU. I've had it for about 4 years and I've noticed for the past few months the fan keep running really fast and the laptop is really hot on the left side of the laptop where the fan is located. This happens even when I'm using microsoft word or browsing the internet and it causes the computer to slow down. It cools quicker once I elevate the back and allow air access through the bottom.    I dissasembled the laptop and surprised to find it relatively clean, I cleaned it but am still getting this problem. Can you suggest any other steps that I can do to prevent this from happening or do you know possible reasons why this is happening? I would appreciate any help you can give me. Thanks,Naid

My Pavilion g6t is only a couple of years old and has been warm to the touch on the left side for most of its life, but it's gotten much worse in the past few months.  I had to disable automatic Windows updates and Norton background scanning because the left side of the laptop would get so hot trying to run these, even if I walked away to do something else.  During Norton scanning, it would even shut down a few times before I disabled it completely. Just in the past week, the total shutdowns have become more frequent.  I don't really do much intensive work on this laptop and sometimes it gets hot just trying to browse the internet.  The most intensive activity would be playing a short video every now and then.  About a year ago, the shift key started working only about 20% of the time.  And now, the display has gone blank perhaps 6 times in the past week and a pop-up note at the bottom said the display driver failed but has recovered. I've read in the forums that overheating seems to be a pretty common problem.  My question is what order should I attempt to fix this overheating problem?  Such as, do I try to update the BIOS first or do I just go for ordering the kit with the thermal paste and hope the laptop can stay alive until the kit arrives or do yet something else?  Blowing air into the vents has not seemed to help.  So, which step do I take next? Thanks for any advice!  I'm nervous about opening up the laptop and digging around inside, but will tackle it if that's the best thing to do now.  I'd rather do that than go through the effort of installing all my various software on a new laptop.

  • HP Pavilion dv4t-1300 fan is always on even with low CPU

I have a HP Pavilion dv4t-1300 Entertainment PC with Windows 7. Even with a low CPU (around 20%), my laptop fan is always on, and the noise is annoying. Why is it always on? How do I turn it off (I have a separate laptop cooler)?

There's a free programme called speedfan to moniter temps, my fan runs all the time its normal it runs at 30% unless cpu and things get to high temps, you can turn off the fan in the bios but i wouldn't recommend it.

Open Activity Monitor in the Utilities folder.  Select All Processes from the Processes dropdown menu.  Click twice on the CPU% column header to display in descending order.  If you find a process using a large amount of CPU time (>=70,) then select the process and click on the Quit icon in the toolbar.  Click on the Force Quit button to kill the process.  See if that helps.  Be sure to note the name of the runaway process so you can track down the cause of the problem.

This sounds like a hardware issue. I haven't seen this particular problem reported before.

  • Overheating problems with 865PE Neo2-S ( 6728 )

I have the same problem with my MB. When the CPU is idle it's temperature is 42 degrees C, but when it get's stressed up it growes up to 62 degrees C. THe heatsink is well in place, and has good contact with the CPU as well as the fan which is working correctly. Once the temp grew up to even 72 degrees but when I touched the heatsink it wasn't hot as I suspected. Also quite often a situation happens when the graphics in a game are starting to get " jumpy " which is followed by sound slowing and eventually the computer stalls, so I think that the overheating is real. I would really use some assistance.

I dont think there is anything wrong with the CPU, CPU cooler or not even the casing fans.
    My system config is
    Pentium 4 2.8GHz C Processor
    MSI NEO2 865PE Mobo 512MB DDR333 Kingston (BIOS 1.1)
450W PSU w/4 Fans cooler system
    ATI Hercules Radeon 9500 Pro
    Iomega 48-24-48x CDRW
    WD SATA 36GB HDD
    WinXP Home SP1
    SB Live
    Creative 4400 Inspire 4.1 Speaker
When I boot up my PC, without running any application it is already 52 degree celsius.  After running General 5 it goes to 60+ ,  Dark Age of Camelot (Graphics intensive) it goes to 70 degree (Sometimes it just reboot while i am playing this game).  What is this?  My casing has 4 fans and my system temp is only 37 degree celsius.  How can my CPU temperature be so high when I didnt even overclock.  So what could be the cause of the problem.  Problematic Corecentre or MSI 865 PE NEO2 bug or whatever.  I really regret choosing this Mobo over Gigabyte PE1000.  FYI, my friend who fix the same system has the same problem as me.  So it is impossible that all of us didnt fixed our CPU cooler properly.

You should be fine running stock cooling (if you dont overclock) ...your problem is more likely to be airflow in and out of the case -to prove this try running with the side pannel/Casing off
If that works then you need to provide more airflow to the case not change your cpu cooler ...a bigger/more efficient CPU cooler will just increase you case temp unless you provide more airflow to the case

  • Over 2 Hours To Export a 10 Minute Video Even With Other Editing Software

Hi, I am having a problem with EVERY edititing software I have used. Recently that is. Anyway heres the deal. I got a new computer and it has been an amazing PC. It has a sticker on the front that says HD video editing as in it supports it. Which it very well does. Within the last couple weeks, I have had problems with editing my videos. I usually render 5 to 15 minute videos since I do YouTube. That would take between 10 and 30 minutes. Now, these videos are taking almost 3 hours give or take just to finish rendering. I have no idea why. It all started when I changed the settings in MSCONFIG to have maximum memory. I restarted my PC and got a hardware error. So I went into safe mode and undid what I had done. I also took out the RAM, and CPU to see if that was a problem. I then put it back in of course. I don't know every knick and cranny of Adobe premiere so please be very descriptive. I also remember that I was having trouble with the fan of my CPU. I couldn't get it to lock back down on the mother board. Could that be a problem? It isn't lock in on all 4 parts. Only 2 I believe. Any help is appreciated. Thanks in advance.

Dumb me haha, I didn't even think of puttin in system info. I believe thats what you were asking? I am using Adobe Premiere CS6. I don't know what version though.
My system specs are as followed
    Pentium Dual Core CPU E6300 @2.80GHz 2.79GHz
    RAM: 4.00 GB
    64 Bit Windows 7
    Nivida Geforce 210 Video Card
The video files I render are M2TS and they are recorded with the Haupaugge Colosus @ 1280x720 in Arcsoft Total Media ShowBiz.
I render them with adobe premiere in H.264 in 1280x720 @29.97 FPS with a Bit rate of 2MB/s

  • Problems with G5 fans coming on...

I have a very early Power Mac Dual 2GHz PowerPC G5 running OSX 10.4.11 which has started having strange problems... For apparantly no reason all the fans come on and stay on - this can sometimes be resolved with a restart, sometimes not, in which case I need to shut the machine down - after which it will sometimes not reboot the first time (gets as far a blue screen then hangs) - I then need to unplug it from the mains for 10 mins or so, afer which it will start up normally.
Looking into the problem I have discovered this message in the system log every time it happens:
    Jan 10 22:01:19 teknomage kernel[0]: AppleMaxim6690::readI2C error (0xE00002C2) I2CAddr = 0x98, subAddr = 0x01
    Jan 10 22:01:19 teknomage kernel[0]: AppleMaxim6690::getExternalTemp read temp failed!
I have also started running a temperature & hardware monitor to try and get to the bottom of this and have discovered that all my temperatures show a flatline when the fault is about to occur. If I then restart the machine, all fans will be running. If the machine starts up with all fans running. On one occasion, CPU A showed a flatline temperature of -6.1 degrees  for several hours (with the machine working just fine!) and the machine restarted into all fans running mode after this.
I have tried both replacing the battery and resetting the PMU - which appeared to fix the fault for a few days, it then recurred.
The machine also will not sleep properly - in that it won't always wake from sleep and needs a power off and reboot - which sometimes occurs with all fans running.
Apart from that the machine works fine - all my software works etc even when all fans are running.
Any ideas as to the cause? I've not changed the hardware (except to replace the battrery when the fault first started) or software for over a year. Is it case of a failing logic board or could it be something else? Any ideas on how to resolve this?
Is there any problem in running the machine when the temperature monitor is showing flatline temperatures for all sensors - or is there a lower level system that will protect the machine should temperatures get too high (maybe by switching to all fans running?)

An update to my G5 fans problem - the problem got worse, with trouble booting the machine at all. It would sometimes take up to half a dozen attempts to get a chime and then a boot :-( Sometimes all the fans would come on after a few minutes, sometimes not at all day. Sleep mode stopped working completely. As the problem was getting worse and worse, I gave in a bought another, refurbished machine identical to mine, swapped over my disks, extra memory & SCSI card and everything on tha machine works just fine :-)
I may try to further diagnose the problem with the old machine later on.
