Sudden power loss ?

Lat year Apple installed a new power supply unit and now a year later the same problem.
Anyone else have the same problem ?

hi , on a surge protector and it has happened about 4 times in the last year. Apple puts me thru the same process each time so it will take time before they tell me to take it to an apple store they hook it up and diagnos the problem and we do it again......
Re Power Surges, not that i have seen, every once in a while but rare.

  • Solved - W530 Intermittent Sudden Power Loss Shutdown

    My symptoms were:
Computer screen would randomly develop horizontal lines of mixed blocky colors.
Computer would randomly lockup rendering all buttons inoperative, except power button (long press).
Computer would randomly power off just like pulling the battery off, with or without AC adapter.
    This is what I found:
Under the lower memory module cover, I noticed that one end of a piece of shielding tape that crosses a divider between the two DIMM connector had come loose, and was making intermittent contact with the pins on the back of the DIMM connector. I pushed the corner of the tape back down with a small eyeglass screwdriver.
For now, all my problems have disappeared.
I hope this works for you too.

Sounds like the same idea as the static discharge issue that affected primarily the W520 machines.

  • Imac G5 power loss

Hello, i don't know how many of you still have an iMac G5 out there, but i was wondering if anyone has ever had any problems relating to sudden power loss. Sometimes I will be working on something and it just shuts down. i would like to know if anyone out there might know if some setting could be responsible for this. thanks in advance.

You could try the following forum, plenty of iMac G% users there I'm sure.

  • W500 power loss

I have a W500 running WIndows 7 which unexpectedly turns off, usually when asleep but sometimes also while on. The turn off happens as if the power is lost (say, the battery/AC cord are yanked out). After a turn off like that, I sometimes need to reconnect the battery and the AC cord. Did some reading here and elsewhere on the web and came upon the electrostatic suggestion. Was able to get it to turn back on at least a few times by touching the underside of the laptop, but that worked inconsistently.
Since it mostly happens when the unit is asleep, I pretty much ruled out the temperature and software issues.
Decided to check out the memory section pin bending solution. My laptop has to have it's palm rest taken off to access the RAM modules. People kept referring to some RAM door pins but since mine doesn't have a special RAM door, I bent some pins on the bottom of the palm rest and so far, not power loss but too early to tell.
Btw laptop is not under any warranty. Any suggestions? Is what I did helpful usually? Any other reasons for sudden power loss that I'm missing? (other than software, heat, and electrostatic)
    Thank you!!!
    Solved!
    Go to Solution.

BTW the problem is back, so the palm rest pin bending didn't solve it.
Found original batteries, one for $52 shipped from China, and another for $78 shipped from US. Are those normal prices for genuine batteries? There were a few others selling them for $160 or so. Just making sure the $52 and $78 prices are not too low for a real battery.

  • Problems with connecting to internet after power loss w WRT54G v3

I'm having problems connecting to the internet after a power loss with my WRT54G v3 wireless router.  I'm at the latest firmware version (4.21.1).
I found similar problems with the V2 version of this router.
After a power failure, I can access the http interface to the router, all of my settings are there (not set to factory settings),the unit is connected to my ISP provider,I can ping from the router, but none of my wired or wireless PCs can ping.
To "fix" this condition, I have to reset to factory settings, then re-load my saved configuration. This usually works, but sometimes I have to hard reset the unit.
Anyone having this problem? Anyone have a fix?

Sudden loss of power for extended periods of time will 9x out of 10 will corrupt the saved configurations and can only be fixed in the way you already described.
A solution for this is getting an UPS incase of a power failure your equipment will be on battery back up until either the battery runs out or power is restored (depending on the model changed the battery time)

  • Mail and huge memory power loss

When sending an email and including a tif. image last night, my imac suddenly suffered a huge power loss which for a while prevented me sending the email. The machine almost seized up, coloured beachballs everywhere, and activity was reduced to pedestrian level.
I checked the activity monitor and found that mail was using 4.2GB and as I only have 3GB of RAM its probable effect on the system was clear; all the same this is a huge amount.
But why? I had simply added a couple of photos to a standard email.
I would be very much obliged for ideas as to why this might have happened.

Hello..ooh. Is there anyone out there?
Or is the answer too simple for words?

    Hi,
    I am using Windows 8.1
I have an External Hard Disk i have partitioned it to 4 parts.
One drive is now inaccessible due to sudden power failure while listening Music from that drive few days ago.
Now it shows "Data error (Cyclic redundancy check)".
I tried all the procedures provided here like
    chkdsk /f, diskpart, rescan etc
but no result :( (i mean all processes failed. They could not detect the drive).
Please help me to get those data, pictures and project files.

  • Sudden power down

Hi everyone, I've got a 13" MacBook (white) and since last night, it started suddenly powering down on its on, while I was on AC power (with the battery in). Prior to that, I was having problems with the fan suddenly going into overdrive although there was no increase in activities on the MacBook. After googling the problem, I reset the SMC and all seemed well for a while, and in fact, performance seemed smoother. Then the problem of the sudden power down started again. I tried resetting the SMC again and took out the battery after noticing a bulge at the side of the battery. It's probably the third time that I've reset the SMC, but it seems like the problem still persists. Does anyone have any suggestions on how to troubleshoot the problem?
    Cheers!

It could be an overheating issue (which may also be causing your battery to swell).
When you notice the fans going, open Applications/ Utilities/ Activity Monitor. Change the pull-down menu from "My Processes" to "All Processes" and sort by the CPU column. Is there a process running very high, say, over 25% of your CPU?
You can also download iStat and use it to monitor your temps and the fan speed:

  • Broadband does not auto reconnect after power loss

I have a D-Link DSL-302G ADSL modem and Netgear AC1900 on an  Eaton Powerware 5110 UPS. When there is power loss or brown out in our neighbourhood , our internet goes off and  does not reconnect automatically. I then have to physically turn off the Netgear Router and turn back on to get the Green LED  Internet light back on.  The modem seems unaffected, but it is bridged so my router controls the connection process. Now this is what has me puzzled - my devices never lose power because of the UPS, and the router connection mode is set to "always on" , and Internet IP address is set to "Get Dynamically from ISP" Is it the local Telstra exchange dropping all connections when swithcing to battery backup, and then disrupting the normal connection process for the Router upon power resume ? Can you confirm what happens, or are there some tests I can do? This is very inconvenient as I run a terminal server, and not in the office all the time to reboot the router.

    Hi Melior,
Normally, if there was a loss of power at your premises but not at the exchange then once the power was restored your modem should automatically reconnect (In this instance, a UPS should keep the modem powered up and connected).  If there was a loss of power at the exchange your modem should connect automatically once the exchange is powered back up.
So given the information that you have provided, I would suggest that you check your equipment.

  • RVL200 won't auto-reconnect to Internet after power loss (PPPoE)

My RVL200 firmware 1.1.7 is configured for PPPoE. The connection to the Internet is via an ATT (SBC) DSL line using a Siemens Slipstream 4100 modem. The 4100 is configured to allow the PPPoE connection to be managed by the router. The RVL200's PPPoE fails to automatically reconnect to the Internet after a power loss (or if I click Disconnect on the RVL200's web page). This is true for both the Connect on Demand and Keep Alive PPPoE alternatives. In either case, I have to go to the router's web screen and manually click "Connect" to force a reconnection. The LAN is populated by Win XP SP2 systems.
Is there some special configuration needed on the LAN, in the RVL200's routing table, or in the modem to allow automatic reconnection to occur? Obviously it is undersirable to have to give out the RVL200 password to everyone who might need to force a reconnect after a power loss.
Neither the RVL200 Admin Guide not the Users Guide has any useful information on this issue.

I have to manually reconnect it. This issue came up when testing what would happen with an RVL200 in a power failure - whether it would automatically reconnect. I don't expect a lot of power failures, but I do want the network to reconnect automatically rather than have to count on someone knowing how to do it and having the apssword.
Am I correct that it is supposed to automatically re-establish the PPPoE connection?
    What triggers the reconnection?

  • Have to reset WRT54G after a power loss

    Hi,
I have a WRT54G ver 2 running firmware version 4.21.1.  "Keep Alive" is enabled for the PPoE connection to my provider.
    My two problems:
    1) Anytime I encounter a power loss I have to reset the router and then of course reconfigure it.  In the past, I never had to do this whenever there was a loss of power.
    2) In a related problem, I cannot use the wireless print server.  As soon as I get it configured and working other PCs on my network lose internet connectivity.  That forces me to reset the the router, which forces me to reconfigure the wireless print server, and the sysle begins again!
Is it possible the ver of firmware I'm running is the issue or do I have a faulty router?

Routers seem to be sensitive to electrical surges and noise. This can cause them to loose their settings. You should keep your router plugged into a high quality surge suppressor with EMI/RFI filtering, such as the Belkin SurgeMaster Gold Series.  EMI/RFI filtering is required.  A surge suppressor alone is not enough because surge suppression does not start until the voltage exceeds 330 volts. Alternatively, most UPS devices have both surge suppression and EMI/RFI filtering.
If this does not prevent your router from "forgetting" its settings, then the router is malfunctioning, and it should be replaced. A router that forgets its settings is not secure.
