Sudden Restarts on Mac Pro.

As of the past week or two, My Mac Pro has been doing sudden restarts.
The latest was in the middle of a film scan.
I set the scan up, walked away from the computer while it scanned and a few minutes into a 25 minute scan, the computer shut down and gave me the 'gong' sound. Upon the reboot, it gave me the error message that an unexpected shut down happened and do i want to send a report to Apple.
Yesterday i was getting the same thing. These mostly happen while the computer is idle.
The only difference with yesterday was that upon reboot, i got the error message with the power button symbol asking me to hold the power button down and shut down the machine and then restart.
I did a reset where i shut down the computer, and unplugged everything from the rear of the machine for a minute or so. still sudden shut downs.
I have read that this is common on the MacBooks but i have not seen anything on the Towers.
Please advise? i have a few months left on Apple care.
Thanks.

Seems like we have three different threads.
I don't believe the article on SMC RESET is accurate, at least leaving unpowered for couple minutes doesn't seem to work, try overnight, until they return to using a physical SMC button.
Run AHT in Extended Loop. And run Memtest. Marginal RAM is still bad ram.
There should also be a UPS, worth every penny, along with AppleCare - and do pay for extended warranty. Now.
Heat is always worth checking. Boost the fans. Monitor temp readings - Hardware Monitor is more accurate than freeware program iStat.
Clone your system and put it someplace safe off line on FW drive.
Run Disk Warrior.
Don't continue to use after a freeze or hard restart, repair it and boot from your emergency boot hard drive that has 10.5.5 (latest) along with Disk Warrior and other tools.
Do some maintenance. Onyx 2.0 or Leopard Cache Cleaner.
There WAS an issue with freeze and restarts on wake from sleep that was addressed (April?) with EFI firmware patch update.
Kernel panics are as varied as user setups. RAM, USB and FW devices AND cables. Tablets, input devices of any kind.
And if you don't stumble on why and solution, and a clean fresh OS (and be careful what you install, and double-check along the way) schedule an appointment to get it looked at, you're right, it isn't normal, but it could be something like a printer driver or connection too.

  • Snow Leopard Server fails when I restart my Mac Pro

I have a new Mac Pro that I've been running Snow Leopard Server on. When I restarted my computer it wouldn't boot up. It would only get to the screen with the apple symbol and the spinning dial under it. I had to totally reset up the computer and server software. 2 weeks later the same thing happened and I had to reset it all up again! A week later the same thing happened so I just gave up and installed Snow Leopard. I was using the computer as a "regular computer" meaning I had all my music, photos, other apps.... but nothing was installed or changed the day and the day before it failed. I didn't even have time to set up web hosting and all that crap. I was just browsing the web using Safari.
And yes everything was up to date.
I would love to go back to Server but I'm not going through all that crap again!!
Any ideas for what the problem could be would be great!
one last thing. Finder froze the last time which is why I had to restart; if that helps anyone.
but please leave a message even if you think it wouldn't affect it.

I would suspect your jumpers settings are wrong. These are cable select...try that not slave/master

  • No More drivers when i restart my MAC PRO XEON

    Good day !
So here is my problem :
I have two Pioneer Drivers 116 and 112. I initialized my hard disk and after install and restart, my drivers don't appear at all. When i do "about this mac" / more information and ATA,
No drivers on my MAC PRO XEON, all vanished !!!
And when i open the MAC, the power supply of my two drivers are working, i hear the sound of "the power supply" i don't know if it's correct... cause my english is approximate.
Did you heard somewhere the same problem ?
    I don't understand.
Thanks for your help cause i really need it.

  • Restarting my mac pro

My mac pro won't restart. It wont restart from the file tab. I have shut it down from the file menu, and then start it again from the power button. Anyone know what to do?

    Reset the SMC.
Install a fresh copy on a newly formatted drive.
    Only install Apple Updates.
You could see what happens after a Safe Boot.
For sure unplug any cables and devices other than keyboard (not that a bad keyboard or cable isn't itself the cause).

  • Yosemite grey screen/restart loop- Mac Pro

Hi - I am trying to instal a fresh copy of Yosemite onto a new SSD in my Mac Pro 2009 and cannot get it to complete the installation. I am currently running Mavericks 10.9.4 from the stock HDD.
I have carefully followed steps to format the new SSD drive using Mac OS Journaled with a single GUID Partition.
I have tried two types of instal:
    1. From a Bootable USB stick - created by Disk Maker X
The instal goes though initialisation, then the timed instal screen stage (which it completes), then it reboots to a grey screen (completely blank). It sits there for a few mins and eventually I hear the disks starting up and it boots straight into Mavericks.
    2. Via the Yosemite installer straight from Mavericks. It lets you choose a destination drive, so I select the SSD, it does it's thing but after the first reboot just goes right back to the very first installation screen....
    Any help gratefully received.
    Thanks

  • Mountain Lion security update prevents successful restart of mac pro

I updated my other MacBook Pro with the Mountain lion security update and it does not make it through the restart. The status bar gets to near the end of the indicator then it disappears and the computer shuts down. I tried restarting several times with the same results. I tried restarting several times with the same result. Help!

The internal drive is malfunctioning, or you have some other hardware fault.
Make a "Genius" appointment at an Apple Store, or go to another authorized service center.
Back up all data on the internal drive(s) before you hand over your computer to anyone. If privacy is a concern, erase the data partition(s) with the option to write zeros* (do this only if you have at least two complete, independent backups, and you know how to restore to an empty drive from any of them.) Don’t erase the recovery partition, if present.
Keeping your confidential data secure during hardware repair
*An SSD doesn't need to be zeroed.

Take the computer in for service. You have a failing GPU.
MacBook Pro (15-inch, Mid 2010)- Intermittent black screen or loss of video
Mid-2010 15" MacBook Pros - the bad NVIDIA GPU
If you're having frequent kernel panics with your 15" mid-2010, or intermittent screen problems, the problem is, more than likely, the faulty NVIDIA GPU found in a number of those machines.
Here's the portion of the kernel panic log that points to the faulty NVIDIA card:

  • Mac Pro Restart Failure....

    Hi all,
Tonight I have experienced a strange restart problem that was not present earlier today. If I try to restart my mac pro, it shuts down ok but I just get a repetitive clicking sound whilst the machine is trying to restart. This to me would suggest a bad disk however the computer will shut down and boot normally. It's just when trying to do a restart. I have run a verify disk / repair permissions etc on all drives and disk utility reports all to be ok. I have also run Leopard cache cleaner. Any ideas why this may have started happening and is there anything I can do to check the disks a bit more in depth? Thanks.

    Hi,
Thanks for the reply. No ups, machine is set not too sleep other than the screen which is set to switch off after an hour of non use. The circuit is dedicated to my mac pro including the monitor. It really sounds like one of the hard disks is seeking, getting to a certain point then trying again, over and over. It has been fine. I have however recently added an additional 8GB of ram. Wether or not this would affect anything I don't know. I have checked the lights on the risers, seems fine and everything shows up as ok in the memory system profiler. Other than the thought of a faulty disk I'm baffled! When running the machine, which works smoothly, I do hear a lot of relay type clicks coming from the tower. Not sure what this is exactly but presume it as being normal. Thanks.

  • Mac Pro wont restart after Snow Leopard upgrade

    Hello,
I have Mc Pro 3,1 8 cores with OS X 10.5.8. I upgraded to Snow Leopard 10.6.3 then download another upgrade to 10.6.3. The download was successful but I need to restart my Mac Pro but it won't restart. I'm seeing Apple Purple/Pink in desktop. I waited for an hour to seee if it will change but nothing Happen. Can anybody help.
    Thank you
    Arnold

My own method, is to keep the old system as is, your safety net, and to do a clean install and let Setup Assistant help afterward.
If or when you upgrade past Snow Leopard be sure to do so, leave everything behind, Lion and above do not include support for the PowerPC coded apps and would cause trouble.
I think we have reached point where only 10.9.5 and Yosemite get full security support, Lion and earlier are gone as far as support and Lion did introduce a security bug just squashed finally but only in those later versions.
If  you are not already, check out Carbon Copy Cloner then: http://www.bombich.com

  • Mac Pro restart issue.

When restarting my Mac pro it will not turn back on and a repetitive ticking can be heard from inside the tower.
Any ideas what the issue is?
    Other info can be provided.
    Thanks

Initially I thought it could be this, however I have two Hard Drives in the tower, so I erased both and installed osx on the other.
The problem still occured. Can't believe that it would be both HD's but I could be possible.
    Any other possibilities?

  • Mac Pro - Restart stuck spinning cog/wheel - Urgent!!

    Hi,
I've just gone to restart my Mac Pro Quad Core 2.66GHz comp and am now stuck with my background showing and a spinning cog/wheel which has been spinning for a fair while now.
    Please help!!
    Ash

    Hi,
Sorted it by holding down the power button to shut it down, then rebooted. I think some files weren't being emptied from the trash properly.
It was actually showing my background wallpaper not a blue/grey screen.
Last time I turned off holding down the power button my Lacie drive died (last week after a huge comp crash when the drives were still connected and couldn't be ejected due to the crash), which I'm trying to recover using Data Rescue tomorrow when my backup drive arrives.

  • Logitech bluetooth mouse not found on restarting Mac Pro

    hi
for some time now I have been using a logitech V270 bluetooth mouse with my Mac Pro which has a bluetooth 2.0 card installed. all works fine except that when i restart my Mac Pro the mouse is generally not automatically detected and i get the 'bluetooth mouse setup' screen with the message 'there isn't a mouse connected'. i then need to press the reset button on the mouse and go through the usual connection procedure.
i wonder i anyone has any advice as to how i can get this set up so that the Mac Pro automatically connects
    thanks
    nick

    Hello all -
I found a solution to this by using Bluetooth Explorer. I had previously tried this and it didn't work, however I realized that I was using an old version of Bluetooth Explorer! When I downloaded the newest version from apple, it worked like a charm and I was able to select which Bluetooth adapter I wanted to use. Switched it over to the USB dongle and it works perfect now. No more skipping mouse, woo hoo!
