  • Re: Restoring windows after sudden shut down during updating

    Hi everyone,
Last night I was updating my windows on my Toshiba laptop, however, my laptop had a sudden shut down during the updating process.
Now when I start my laptop, I am prompted that a system error occurred and I have to insert my windows CD to continue. I never got a windows CD, and nor have I made a recovery disc yet, so is there any possible way for me to log into windows again? I am using windows Vista.
    Any suggestion would be grateful.
    Thanks in advance

    hi dDk,
what is the first rules of using a computer?
*never touch a running system* and of course: *read the f... manual* and *make backups often*
ok this was a bit hard... but this is a common failure to make an update without saving....
now lets see what we can do....
    - i assume that there is no possibility to start in safe mode...
    - hdd recovery is not possible...
    - you have neither a systemdisk of vista nor a system backup
now you are in operators hell....
    - see a servicepartner and ask for assistance, for a small fee he is able to setup your original system
    - get a vista/win7 istallation cd and install it, be aware you loose your hdd backup funktion!
    - try to repair with a "system-on-a-disc" like winpe or bartpe
    - try to make the hidden recovery partition visible to a os booted from cd and run recovery agent from there
if you killed your recovery partition.... bad luck

  • Distiller Suddenly Shuts Down during pdf creation...

Never had a problem in Acrobat 6.0.1 on Mac OS 10.4.1.
Suddenly, Distiller takes all .ps or .eps files to almost 100% of pdf creation, then crashes.
Says "Can't process job because PDFLib failed to initialize."  Might have happened after I used "FontNuke" to zap font caches, which never caused a problem before either.
EasyFind can't find a file called "PDFLib"
    Thanks for any help!

    Thanks!

  • Powermac G5 Suddenly shuts down during use

My mac started doing this a few days ago, and it's starting to worry me. While using my mac, the screen goes black and the computer automatically restarts? It even did what sounded like a PRAM reset once and chimed 3 times?
I'm taking a wild guess, and hoping it's somethink like a battery replacement? I've never done this, and it's a 2006 computer.
    Anyone have any ideas?

2006 was on the end of the switchover IIRC, it's possible you have a G5 or an Intel Mac, Apple System Profiler will tell you the model number or use Mactracker to see the model info. mactracker.ca
Mactracker also links to the support documents per model, so follow that links & there will be an explanation of how to replace the PRAM battery (assuming it is user serviceable part).
I don't think a failing PRAM battery would cause this issue, so you will want to look at logs around the time of the last force shutdown. There may be a panic log. Look in Console (/Applications/Utilities) for logs. Start recording the date & time of these failures, finding the appropriate log messages is a major part of the job.
It may also be worth running Apple Hardware Test if you have the original (grey) install disks, or you can download the AHT.iso & burn to a CD.
When you have the correct model info look at the list of AHT iso's & grab the correct one…
    https://github.com/upekkha/AppleHardwareTest
    Using Apple Hardware Test
An additional RAM tester tool -> http://www.kelleycomputing.net/rember/
    Some other things to consider
OS X Mavericks: Reset your computer’s PRAM
Intel-based Macs: Resetting the System Management Controller (SMC)
    OS X: About kernel panics
I'd also try booting in safe mode to see if it dies - bear in mind many things will not work in safe mode the OS has disabled many non-essential extensions so graphics may be 'laggy' etc. Test as much as you can, (it could also be temperature related so test when the Mac is hot & cold).
I'd also make an external installation to test booting from. If that disk is 100% OK you can consider the internal disk(s) as part of the issue - verify & repair the HD. Back them up beforehand !

  • IMac just shuts down during iDVD build

*4 week old 20 inch iMac just shuts down during iDVD build of a dvd. Its really weird, because it is rendering and encoding and all of a sudden it just shuts down without a know. Then when I turn it back on it ejects the blank dvd out and starts. I had my SuperDrive replaced also like 2 days ago from the apple store. I have pasted the system.log if that helps?*

most likely caused by overheating due to video encoding increasing cpu usage (system freezing and shutdowns is a problem with older intel imacs). monitor your internal temps using an app like istat. temporary workaround is to use an fan control app like imacfancontrol and increase the cpu fan speeds. but this does not actually fix the problem which may arise more periodically as the system gets older.

  • System Sudden Shut Down Problem

Hi there - not sure how to trouble shoot this so I thought I'd start here:
My system runs for a while and then will suddenly shut down by itself with no warning.... I cannot restart by pushing the power button unless I wait awhile.  (few mins)  Very strange, upon boot up the system does NOT go through a disk check or anything, boots up normally.
Somethings that seem to trigger the shutdown, use of websites with heavy flash components.. Mostly kids sites like disney etc...
I use Mozilla and the flash player is the latest greatest...
I know this is very vague but thought I'd throw it out to see where folks think I should start.
My 1st guess was an overheating prob..  I have a rear 80mm case fan the CPU fan and the power supply fan going full tilt...  No excessive dust issues clogging fins etc...
    Any thoughts much appreciated!

    Hi!Just a thought..
Supposly you have an msi main board you should have the "core center" utility which shows cpu/system/nb temp's. Additionaly you can adjust the fan speed with it.
Another point is that in the past sometimes my pc used to restart without a reason. A hardware explanation is that cpu is overheated or something else went wrong. But i realized that it happend because of software..And usually when trying to run specific programs.Maybe it was drivers, maybe something unwanted installed from "bad sites", anyway try to use system restore some days before the 17th of this month just to be sure.I mean you have a quite new psu and if something was going wrong with the heatsink of cpu it would have restarted earlier during boot.
Anyway the post is 3 days long and maybe you've already managed to solve your prob.

  • Suddenly Shut Down my mac book pro, late 2011

Hello guys, i need your help.
Last 2 weeks, suddenly my macbookpro shut down, and it makes me shock.
After a few second shut down, i try to turn it on.
it just make sound like turn on your mac and suddenly shut down again.
It shut down for 3 times and more.
When i plug in the charger, it turn on.
But after i unplug the charger it suddenly shut down again.
i try to shut down my mac properly, and when i turn on again it works.
My friends say that it could be my battery, i checked it, and my battery was normal.
And i search about this issue, some people say to reset SMC, i dont know if it would works or not.
Did reset SMC will makes you lose you data or something?
Now, i must plug the charger when i want to turn on my mac.
Did this a serious problem or not? i need you advice guys.
    Thanks!

No data is lost due to resetting the SMC.
But after i unplug the charger it suddently shut down again
The problem may be the adapter. Try here > Apple Portables: Troubleshooting MagSafe adapters

  • Computer shuts down during render/prerender

This was not my original problem but it has occured before and I know it will occur again.
My computer shuts down for no reason when I try to render or prerender video in Adobe Premiere Pro CS4. From what I can tell it is a general issue with premiere that I am having. I have tried multiple video formats, multiple video lengths, and multiple rendering options and I am still getting random shut downs during rendering.
Here are some specs for my computer which is a laptop:
OS: Windows 7 Ultimate (64 bit OS)
Proccessor: Intel Core 2 Duo @ 3.0 ghz
    Ram: 8 gigs of it
    Video: Nvidia Geforce 9600M GT
1 Hard Drive w/ 280 gb of space
As a recap.... My exact problem is that during the rendering or pre rendering proccess my computer simply shuts down as in it turns off.
I can also add that the computer does act strangely leading me to believe that theres some hardware or software incompatibility. While it is rendering I can hear the CPU fan pick up which is usually normal for any rendering application but what I noticed was that it doesnt stop speeding up. Its like if it was going into an overload and I can confirm that at its peak, the computer shuts down.
To add troubles... whenever I pre render any video and it succesfully renders.... Premeire will hang up really really bad if I try to play the pre rendered preview. In otherwords when you preview a video that it pre rendered it usually plays smooth and everything is fine. After I pre render something though and play it I can tell its locking up because the timeline bar is really jumpy and the video playback skips also.
This is the problem I would really love fixed. I usually have to button smash my keyboard until I lock premiere up and then once it unfreezes itself i can preview my work smoothly. This is however like a good 5 mins of my time trying to get the preview to play smoothly though so its really hurting how fast I can work.
If anyone can help me out I would greatly appreciate it. I will be trying to run the same stuff on my older laptop and observe the results. I personally think CS4 is incompatible with windows 7.

If you have a recent nVidia driver installed, you might want to check to see if you have either of these two modules loaded - check in the nVidia console:
PhysX, or 3D Stereovision. If you have them, definitely disable 3D Stereo, and test. If no improvement, disble PhysX and test.
Also, try adjusting your Hardware Acceleration. If Max, set to Min and test. If Min, set to Max and test. If either helps, try incrementing up, or down, until it no longer helps.
Last, check your OpenGL settings. If ON, turn OFF. If OFF, turn ON.
It appears that you have a laptop. Is that correct?
    Good luck,
    Hunt

  • My MacBook suddenly shut down and won't turn back on - how do I get it to turn back on?

My MacBook suddenly shut down after freezing up and I cannot get it to turn back on again.  I tried the suggestions in the manual and none of them worked to turn it back on. Is there something I am not doing correctly?  The little green light on the charger connector is green but not as bright as normal, it was charged by over 70% before it shut down, so I do not think it is a battery problem.  Is there anything I can do to turn it back on?  Thank you for any help given, I really appreciate it.

If it won't bong, then try an SMC reset.

Just a quick update with a couple more details before I go to work:
I left my phone plugged into the wall charger all night long but the Apple logo is still blinking on and off. However, when unplugged from the charger, the screen goes blank and the unit does not respond to pressing/holding the buttons at all. Likewise, flipping the mute switch does not cause the phone to vibrate as it normally would, which made me wonder if power was being disrupted somewhere else in the unit before the battery. I just finished disassembling the unit down to the battery, looked for any loose connections etc., and did spot a suspicious looking spot on top of the #5 ribbon connector that I had not taken notice of before in my first disassembly. I'll take a picture of it and post a link for your consideration later on today when I have a spare moment, although I fear the worst.

  • Early 2009 suddenly shuts down or won't startup

Hi, I've recently been having some problems with my mac pro 2009. It will suddenly shut down and won't restart or if left for a while won't startup.
Sometimes if I press the power button it will sort of startup but then suddenly turn off during the initial powerup (before the screen turns on).
I brought it in for repair and they replace the power supply, called apple and end the end they said they reset something on the motherboard but couldn't really find what was wrong... Has anyone else had this problem and found a solution?

    Hi Phil,
Has anyone else had this problem and found a solution?
I hate to be blunt, Phil, but the real solution is to get Apple to give you a replacement. You're within your rights as a consumer to have a perfectly working Macintosh. Most of us do. I haven't read a bad report on these machines yet, but if it's not working right then something is wrong.
    Good luck.

    Zyxel external ADSL Modem
    Operating System: Windows XP SP2
    The Problem
The PC suddenly shuts down as if the power cord is pulled from PSU.
Detailed Description and what I've tried
The first days after I've build the system everything looked to work properly. I tried to run 3d mark 2005 and it ran without problem. Then the fourth day when I was surfing on internet and listening music with winamp, suddenly the pc shut down. This happens three times and I noticed that it depended from the audio device of the MB, in fact if I didn't play music the pc didn't switch down, otherwise after about 20minutes I played music, the problem occured.
So I thought the problem was the PSU, so I ran 3d mark 2005 for more than an hour and it ran without any problem! I was very surprised. I tried also to run Prime95, one for each CPU core, and also Prime ran without problem.
Another problem was that after about 1-2hours that I was connected to internet, the connection suddenly freezed and the OS couldn't shut down the pc, so I had to use Reset button.
After someday I noticed that the motherboard has 3 power connectors!!! I've connected to the PSU only the 4pin and the 24pin!! So I connected also the molex to the PSU. So I thought to have found and solved the problem, and for about 48 hours the PC worked properly, also for 6 continous hours, I can play music using the Realtek audio device and no more problem with connection.
But then again after about 48hours the same problems!!
So I've tried to disable the realtek device and to use a sound blaster 1024 Live! And it seems to work, I can play music and the system doesn't shut down. I've also disconnected the two 80mm fans, it seems to help.
Another strange thing is that now when I switch on the system the MB emits two short beeps. Before it emited one long beep. What does it mean? I don't understand the cause of this change.

True, the computer doesn't need that amount of power.....but....
    You are miscalculating the powersupply.
Just because it states it can do 17A (or what ever figure) it doesn't do that all the time.
Here you have the details of how a PSU handles output, then you might have a clue what we are talking about:
    Quote
    3) Specify a low operating temperature for rated output. This is quite common, but again not often seen in consumer brochures, but rather tech spec sheets provided usually only on demand by engineers or corp buyers. A typical PSU operating temp statement is somthing like this:
0?C ~25?C for full rating of load, decrease to zero Watts O/P at 70?C
Examine what that says. Full power (let's say 400W) is available when the unit is at 0?C ~25?C. Hmmm. Think about this.
Have you ever felt air blown out of a PSU in a PC running absolutely full tilt (which it would have to do to get anywhere near 400W output) that felt cool to the fingers? 25?C airflow would feel exactly that: Cool, given that normal body temperature is 37 ?C.
So this PSU cannot deliver full rated power when its temperature goes over 25?C. OK, what happens to the max power output capacity above that temp? It decreases gradually so that by the time the PSU temp reaches 70?C, the PSU cannot deliver any power at all. So if you assume that this power drop as temp rises is linear, then max power capacity will drop by ~9W for every degree over 25?C.
Now having examined as many PSUs as I have over the last 2~3 years, I have to say there's not a single PSU in ANY PC I have ever used or examined that would not measure at least 30~35?C almost anywhere inside the PSU under almost any kind of load. And if/when it is pushed, 45?C is nothing at all, especially for or near hot running components like voltage regulators.
So let's say 40?C is a fairly typical temp inside a PSU. This 400W rated unit would actually be able to deliver a max of just 220W at that temp. Hmmm. Interesting, isn't it? At 50?C, the available power would drop to just 130W. No wonder some PSUs have 3 fans each capable of 50 cfm!!
Here's a simple fact: Really high quality PSUs are actually rated for full power output at as high as 50?C. The trick is get a hold of the spec sheets that tell such information so you can compare apples to apples. Or ask.
    Source: >>SilentPCreview<<
I suggest you start reading on their site as to what they have to say about powersupplies.
As those PSU's DO NOT DELIVER the amount of power under all conditions....many people have blown their system to pieces already by ignoring the heat-factor.
That is we are telling all along, you don't need 33Amps....but you need loads of headroom when summertime temps are there.
Because then your PSU doesn't deliver near the ammount of power you think it does.
Also, split rails are far worse then single rails when it comes to that...heck a lot of so called splitrails are not splitted at all, like the some of the Coolermasters....
Do yourself a favor and get to know how PSU's work, as they are NOT what you think they are.
And to quote a bit more from the same source:
    Quote
What's really interesting is that Intel has tacitly waived the 240VA limit requirement in its PSU validation program for the better part of a year. Intel maintains a web page listing all the ATX12V they have tested that "meet MINIMUM electrical, mechanical fit and functional compatibility" with Intel desktop boards and processors. For the 32 ATX12V v2.2 PSUs tested in 2005 that are on this list, 17 models are identified as having at least one output line that exceeds 240VA. And yet, these 17 models are on Intel's approved list.
According to the engineers I spoke with, the majority of these 17 models have just one 12V line. They also point out that there are another 20 or so ATX12V v2.0 PSU models on the Intel list, and none of them were tested for the 240VA current limit conformance. My sources say that if these models had been tested, more than half would not conform to the 240VA current limit because they have only one 12V line.
In the last couple of months, my PS engineering sources report, Intel has verbally informed them that the 240VA limit has been removed. A single 12V line is now "officially" approved, never mind what ATX12V v2.2 specifies.
What does all this mean? Essentially, the only potential benefit of dual 12V lines is improved safety, and this is questioned by the engineers I spoke with. There are many downsides to dual 12V lines, including higher cost and the extra headache of ensuring adequate 12V current for all the components in complex, high power systems. For the consumer who is trying to make a choice among the myriad of PSUs available on the retail market today, the most practical approach regarding dual 12V lines and power capacity is to consider only the combined 12V current capacity. (It will certainly be interesting to see how Intel handles this issue in the next version of ATX12V.)
But you better read their site, as there is way more info there regarding PSU's then any other site I know of.

  • My imac shuts down during the startup process - possible startup file corrupt..??

    startup process begins normally...

sometimes shuts down during spinning wheel, sometimes it gets to the blue screen then shuts down

Zap the PRAM and Reset the SMC, then try again. If no go, Bboot with the SL install disc, launch Disk Utility, repair the disk, and restart normally. If that doesn't do the trick reinstall SL and then run Software Update if that does.

  • Computer shuts down during startup

    Hey everyone,
it shames me a little to ask for help about computers because I am usually ok with doing this stuff myself.
This time, however, I cannot seem to fix the problem indefinitely.I need a laptop for school and cannot afford another so any help would be greatly appreciated!:
I will just point the facts out:
After a few years use (two) it now shuts down during (windows) startup.
I ended up cleaning the Heatsink/fan yet the problem persisted.
The model is a Toshiba Satellite A200-PSAF6A.
I am no longer under warranty.
The school techs cannot help me.
A few oddities that I noticed:
It starts up fine when the power plug isn't plugged in.
It starts up fine with the power plugged in only in safe mode.
Using CCleaner and Defraggler temporarily fixed my problem (for about 5 minutes or so).
I hope that you guys can help me. It's just annoying that I cannot fix this myself..
If any further information is required please just ask and I will reply with as much haste as I can under my current circumstances.
    Thanks,
    Norak.

During a "cold start" I may get up to the windows login screen and then it shuts down and restarts. (sometimes it doesn't make it to the windows screen and turns off to restart). Then it will start to load windows and the little bar at the bottom will be loading windows and then freeze. I would have to hold the power button down to turn off and restart. Then I start windows normally and it usually works OK, sometimes I have to do this step again, but eventually I get into windows. Then if I shut down and restart it starts up fine, unless I wait for it to cool down.
Since this started happening, I have reinstalled vista 32bit to out of the box condition and updated to the latest bios, to no avail.
Computer has always run hot since new, seems to have very poor cooling. But the fan operates, most of the time on full boar.
Do you think this is a software issue or a component issue, or cold joint.
BTW it will not shutdown at all if I keep the computer in the F12 key settings area,im not sure what this place is called, but you choose to boot from cd here.
Okay, this is weird and I'm not sure if this has anything to do with what I had mentioned earlier. I was having some issues with my DVD drive, it was rattling bad and the spin off time was off causing coasters on almost every blank DVD, so I had the thing sent in for a replacement. They put in a new DVD drive, checked the status of my BIOS (V 4.2 which I had all along) and returned the unit back to me sometime around April 22, 2010 -- ever since the thing was working fine. I'm not sure if the bad drive had caused the unit to work erratically.
Before it was sent in, the issue was of course with the DVD drive, the startup then shutdown problems, plus a whole plethora of other small problems which I didn't bother to mention on my first post. For instance; the illumination lights that controls the media -- sometimes they would not turn off when I shut my computer down. The light stays on even after the computer powers off and I'd have to unplug the AC power cord for the lights to completely shut off.
My initial problems with the laptop was:
    Media lights won't go off,
DVD drive rattles very loudly and burns bad media,
    Shutdowns during startups,
The screen housing would creak every time when I wanted to adjust the position (this happens when I adjust it slowly).
After they replaced the DVD drive, everything seems to work fine. It's been almost two months now and I haven't had issues with any of the above mentioned problems.
