Sudden shut down of my laptop

I m using HP ProBook 4520s and recently i have being encountered by a problem. I have been using it for about 3 to 3.5 years. laptop all of a sudden shuts off without any warning or any indication. it happens about every 30 to 40 mins. any solution to this problem?
and yeah one more thing perhaps it is concerned with this problem, there is a pop up notification of "HP support assistance" which says "PC need to be restarted" i have restarted several times but its continuing to show the same msg for the past whole week. may be it is some how related to the shut off problem.
i would be thankful to any kind of help...

Hello Ukan. I understand you're experiencing random shut downs of your notebook.
The two most common causes for a random shutdown of your notebook are heat related problems and battery related problems.
To begin, you should make sure your notebook isn't running hot. This document covers how to keep the notebook's cooling system clean and free of debris. I suggest performing this every few months as standard preventative maintenance.
Battery issues can also cause a similar issue. Over time Lithium based batteries "forget" where their 0% and 100% points are located. A manual calibration of the battery can help rectify this problem. Here is how to manually calibrate our battery.
Charge the battery fully.
Reboot the notebook and begin running the hard drive diagnostic test. Here is a link to a document which covers this test.
While the test is being performed remove the AC power. Allow the hard drive test to fully drain the battery.
After the hard drive test drains the battery re-charge the notebook.
Verify that this solves the problem.
Post the result.
I hope you find this helpful; I hope you have a great day!

  • My laptop suddenly shuts down even doing nothing

so i got a toshiba c660 satellite laptop. everything was good until one day when i was using my laptop, it suddenly shut down. then i try to open it again, while in the starting windows logo, it shuts down again. i tried to open it again, then the launch start up repair command showed up. i tried the start up and i can use my computer again for long hours. but after letting it rest for few hours, the same thing happened again. what could be the main problem? and what should i do in order to fix this? and another thing when i use capslock the key 4 r f and v do not function. but if i hold shift i can type 4 r f and v. is that related to the sudden shutting down? please help me. thanks in advance.

You're system inexplicably dies, do your rebooted sessions last longer if the system is allowed time to cool down before restarting.
If the system is immediately restarted after halting, does the immediately restarted session halt after barely a few minutes or even seconds?
Youre description has the hallmarks of a struggling CPU inadequately cooled by a fan bogged in dust.
An inexpensive can of compressed air might be the solution and this site along with the rest of the web is repleate with instructions and mundane tips of how to most effectively smot dust from your notebook.
It isn't rocket science, but it shouldn't be done while the system is powered on, seems obvious but the poker card in the bicycle spokes sound effect from shooting air into a spinning fan also damages the fans ability to remain useful by Christmas, perfect excuse to buy a whole new laptop.

  • Re: Restoring windows after sudden shut down during updating

    Hi everyone,
Last night I was updating my windows on my Toshiba laptop, however, my laptop had a sudden shut down during the updating process.
Now when I start my laptop, I am prompted that a system error occurred and I have to insert my windows CD to continue. I never got a windows CD, and nor have I made a recovery disc yet, so is there any possible way for me to log into windows again? I am using windows Vista.
    Any suggestion would be grateful.
    Thanks in advance

    hi dDk,
what is the first rules of using a computer?
*never touch a running system* and of course: *read the f... manual* and *make backups often*
ok this was a bit hard... but this is a common failure to make an update without saving....
now lets see what we can do....
    - i assume that there is no possibility to start in safe mode...
    - hdd recovery is not possible...
    - you have neither a systemdisk of vista nor a system backup
now you are in operators hell....
    - see a servicepartner and ask for assistance, for a small fee he is able to setup your original system
    - get a vista/win7 istallation cd and install it, be aware you loose your hdd backup funktion!
    - try to repair with a "system-on-a-disc" like winpe or bartpe
    - try to make the hidden recovery partition visible to a os booted from cd and run recovery agent from there
if you killed your recovery partition.... bad luck

  • My macbook pro suddenly shuts down

    Hello everyone,
I am having problems with my MacBook Pro.
It suddenly shuts down without any warning. I tried turning it on, a few seconds after the sound, it would shut down.
I read the User Manual and tried a command "press Power Button, and immediately hold down Command Option, P and R Keys simultaneously" and my laptop turns on. Sometimes it would still suddenly shuts down.
I also noticed that the mouse sometimes isn't as responsive as it used to, very slow.
I also downloaded iBoost to see if it helps.
    Hope to hear from you.
    Thanks.

    Thanks Dominic23 for your reply.
What I noticed from the link you sent is:
Portable computers that have a battery you should not remove on your own include MacBook Pro (Early 2009) and later, all models of MacBook Air, and MacBook (Late 2009).
    Shut down the computer.
Plug in the MagSafe power adapter to a power source, connecting it to the Mac if its not already connected.
On the built-in keyboard, press the (left side) Shift-Control-Option keys and the power button at the same time.
Release all the keys and the power button at the same time.
Press the power button to turn on the computer.
Note: The LED on the MagSafe power adapter may change states or temporarily turn off when you reset the SMC.
I bought my MacBook Pro last December 2010...will this be OK if I follow the steps? Even it was mentoned for models early 2009?
    Thanks and best regards.

Now, i must plug the charger when i want to turn on my mac.

No data is lost due to resetting the SMC.
But after i unplug the charger it suddently shut down again
The problem may be the adapter. Try here > Apple Portables: Troubleshooting MagSafe adapters

  • My MacBook suddenly shut down and won't turn back on - how do I get it to turn back on?

My MacBook suddenly shut down after freezing up and I cannot get it to turn back on again.  I tried the suggestions in the manual and none of them worked to turn it back on. Is there something I am not doing correctly?  The little green light on the charger connector is green but not as bright as normal, it was charged by over 70% before it shut down, so I do not think it is a battery problem.  Is there anything I can do to turn it back on?  Thank you for any help given, I really appreciate it.

If it won't bong, then try an SMC reset.

  • My iphone4 suddenly shut down.I pluged into a charger it started vibration and got heat up in off mood. I also checked it to genius he said that its battery is ok but problem is some thing else. It is still in off mod. what i have to do?

My iphone4 suddenly shut down.I pluged into a charger it started vibration and got heat up in off mood. I also checked it to genius he said that its battery is ok but problem is some thing else. It is still in off mod. what i have to do?

I  am having a similar odd issue. First of all this summer i took my iphone 4 to apple because my screen had quit. I could hear calls and texts coming thru but screen was unresponsive. I was a month out of warranty so the nice fella at apple gave me a 30 day warranty, then replaced my handset with a refurb. Saturday night at dinner i was on my phine and it died. I plugged it in thinking nothing of it and went to bed. When i wooe up after the charger had been on all night all i had was the black screen with the battery (red) and lightning bolt, meaning it knew it plugged in but still did nothing. So off to apple i go. They said i was out of warranty and the problem (never said what problem) would cost 170 bucks to fix. So i went and upgraded to the iphone 5 ( figured if i'm spending that anyways may as well be on a new phone). When I got home i tinkered with the old one with all the online suggestions i could find. (Cleaning ports, hard reset, putting into recovery mode, and checking indicators for water damage which there was none). Still only saw the battery symbol. I left it alone figuring i can sell off cheap and someone else can repair. Last night for kicks i plugged it in again and it came to life! It is in recovery mode (needs to be hooked to itunes to regain functionality) but showed 100% battery charge. I went to show my bf and realized an issue. If its not plugged into the wall adaptor, it wont turn on. I figured then that if i can get it plugged in and pull it up on itunes maybe it would be fine. When plugged into the computer it wont hold enough power. It thrns on shows the apple for 30 seconds, shuts off. My ending conclusion on my own is that it needs a new battery in order to be revived. Anyone think this sounds like a reasonable conclusion? Or will i be wasting money? If i can get it restored to functional, cheaply i can give to my bf (his pos lg phone is almost toast) or sell it.

  • IMac suddenly shutting down

Below is what my iMac tells me when it suddenly shuts down or freezes. Does this mean anything to anybody. Quite frustrating. I don't want to buy a new machine if there is some fix for this but I also cannot afford to be without my machine while it is in the shop for a look under the hood.
    Any suggestions would most appreciated.

Today it shut Down and World not turn back ón. I toke the power kabel out for 5 min and tried again.. Now it seemed like it startede up fans, lighus in mainboard and so ón.. But the screen didn,t acrivate and there was no power in my key board pr mouse. • Dual 2.3 GHz G5 suddenly shutting down

We have a Dual 2.3 GHz G5 (production week 10/29/05, Power PPC 970 v.3.0, with 2.5 GHz RAM), running OS 10.4.8. This machine has started to suddenly shut down - like someone pulled the plug with no warning.
After turning itself off like that, we need to wait around 20 minutes before it'll start up again and keep running. Once it has shut itself off, we cannot get to the logon screen without it shutting off suddenly again. After letting it cool down for 20 minutes, it'll run again. So it seems to be heat related in some way.
I've run Temperature Monitor and iStat, and everything looks OK. Of course TechTool Deluxe didn't find anything (does it ever?).
The machine will run for 2-3 hours under load just fine, but will suddenly click and shut off at some point - even when not under a load.
I've checked the System logs and Console logs and can see nothing, except once the system log reported "ApplePMU::PMU forced shutdown, cause = -122"
The other times there was no log entry, like it shut down too fast for the log to be written.
Is the power supply going bad? Is there a temperature sensor which is too sensitive?
We'd appreciate any help or suggestions.

o maybe there is something RAM related, but I can't
imagine that RAM would shut the machine completely
    off. Can it?
I believe the problem is thermal related. You may have a processor acting up. Try running Hardware Monitor once, and see what your internal temps are running.

I was charging and updating my mini ipad last night when it suddenly shut down and will not turn on since then. What do I do to turn it on again?

Try this  - Reset the iPad by holding down on the Sleep and Home buttons at the same time for about 10-15 seconds until the Apple Logo appears - ignore the red slider - let go of the buttons. (This is equivalent to rebooting your computer.) No data/files will be erased.
