Sudden shutdown when not plugged in

I have found others that have had this issue but I have not found a satisfactory answer to the problem. My MacBook no is no longer able to operate without being plugged in. After about 5 mins of operation with just the battery and not being plugged in. It's a hard shutdown where the computer just has a complete power loss (screen goes black and motors stop running). It operates normally when plugged in though. The battery is fully charged also.
Is it safe to do an SMC or battery calibration? Might I have data loss? If I take it to Apple, what might they say?
Here's my info:
Battery Information:
Battery Installed: Yes
First low level warning: No
Full Charge Capacity (mAh): 3404
Remaining Capacity (mAh): 3283
Amperage (mA): -785
Voltage (mV): 12318
Cycle Count: 206

  • Suddenly shutdown when the battery is lower than 6%

suddenly shutdown when the battery is lower than 6% (sometimes lower than 10%)and can not power on anymore, you need to plug the AC to trigger to power on the phone.

Your battery gauge needs to be recalibrated. When the phone goes off, charge for just a couple of minutes, then run the battery down all the way. If it shuts off above 1% charge again for a couple of minutes, then run down again. Repeat until it actually goes off at 1%. Then charge for 4 hours with the wall charger without using the phone.
To prevent this happening again, about once a month run the battery all the way down until the phone shuts off, then charge to 100% with a wall charger. (This is actually recommended in Apple's iPhone tips, but they don't say why to do it. The "why" is to recalibrate the battery gauge.)

  • My photos won't "load" - it has worked fine for at least two years, but suddenly now when I plug in the chip, iPhoto opens up as usual, but the window just says "loading photos",  and the little wheel keeps on spinning - can anyone help me?? I am new here

my photos won't "load" - it has worked fine for at least two years, but suddenly now when I plug in the chip, iPhoto opens up as usual, but the window just says "loading photos",  and the little wheel keeps on spinning - can anyone help me?? I am new here. I need to get it working again because we're about to go on a trip!

What version of iPhoto? Assuming 09 or later:
    Option 1
Back Up and try rebuild the library: hold down the command and option (or alt) keys while launching iPhoto. Use the resulting dialogue to rebuild. Choose to Rebuild iPhoto Library Database from automatic backup.
    If that fails:
    Option 2
Download iPhoto Library Manager and use its rebuild function. This will create a new library based on data in the albumdata.xml file. Not everything will be brought over - no slideshows, books or calendars, for instance - but it should get all your albums and keywords back.
Because this process creates an entirely new library and leaves your old one untouched, it is non-destructive, and if you're not happy with the results you can simply return to your old one. .

  • I'm trying to install a new samsung 27" series 7 750 monitor. I have a macmini. when i plug the cord in between the computer and the mknitor, the screen goes white, but no display. When not plugged into the computer the screen stays black and cycles

I'm trying to install a samsung series 7 750 monitor for use with my mini mac. When I plug the computer to the monitor I get a blank screen, no picture. When not plugged in to the computer the screen is black and a square displAys that says analog, HDMI 1, HDMI 2. Any ideas?

    Hey there saraszeg,
It sounds like you are trying to use an external monitor with your Mac Mini but cannot get more than a gray screen. You can use the following steps to help troubleshoot the Mac side of things here:
Apple computers: Troubleshooting issues with video on internal or external displays
    http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1573
Remove all display cable extenders, KVM switches, or other like devices and retest to determine if the issue is resolved.
Try unplugging the video adapter or cable and then plug it back in.
If more than one video adapter is in use (or "daisy-chained"), troubleshoot by using only one adapter.
Example: A mini DisplayPort to DVI adapter connected to a DVI to HDMI adapter is an unsupported configuration because there is a series of adapters in use.
If available, try using a different display and or adapter (or use a different connector by using DVI instead of VGA, for instance).
    Reset the system
You can reset the Mac's parameter RAM and SMC.
    Reset the resolution
Start by resetting the Mac's parameter RAM. If the display does not come up, was previously set to an unsupported resolution, and still results in no video:
    Start up in Safe Mode.
From the Apple () menu, choose System Preferences.
Choose Displays from the View menu to open the preferences pane.
Select any resolution and refresh rate that your display supports.
    Restart your computer.
Thank you for using Apple Support Communities.
    Take care,

  • Sudden shutdown when working on battery mode, clock reset

    Hi
i am running windows 7 32 bit on an HP dv6970ej (dv6000) and my problem is sudden power failures when working on battery.
my first battery was worn out a few months ago and so I replaced it (with an HP original). it worked fine for a while but lately when I am working on battery mode the system shuts down with no warning.
the thing is that when I plug it back to the AC the battery is almost full - 85%-90% charged.
also - the last few times the power went down the clock was reset. i replaced the BIOS little battery but that didn't seem to make much difference.
i also tried to update the BIOS, didn't change anything.
the main issue of course is the system shutting down unexpectedly, while the battery is obviously still holding charge.
    any suggestions?

the clock reset is just a side effect of the main issue - system power failure. as long as there are no sudden shutdowns the clock is saved. plus i guess i am not gonna replace the whole motherboard so that's why i am less concerned about that.
what really bugs me is not having the ability to disconnect the computer from the AC for more that a few minutes. sometimes it shuts down after two minutes, sometimes after 10-15 min.
i am thinking- maybe it has anything to do with voltage drops or something like that or incorrect reading of the battery, because as i said - when i plug it back in - in indicates 80%-90% charge level.
I also ran a diagnostic on the battery's wear level. the old battery was definitely worn out, but the current one seems to be OK on that aspect.

  • Computer shuts down when not plugged in

When my computer is not plugged in it will not stay on. I've tried removing the battery and putting it back in and restarting the computer many times. Any help would be very much appreciated as to what I should do.

Try resetting the SMC first http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=303319
Then check your battery version System/library/systemconfiguration and check is 1.2 if it is 1.3 drag it to trash and reboot then run software update to install 1.2
    Check firmware update in applications/utilities
    Finally calibrate the battery http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?path=Mac/10.5/en/9036.html
If none of those help welcome to the club of the sudden shutdown...

  • My iPhone 5 dies when not plugged in.

I got a new iPhone 5 from the Apple Store a little less than a month ago. I haven't dropped it, gotten it wet, scratched it or anything since the time I recieved it, and it always has a case. My phone died unexpectantly at 80% and when I plugged it into the charger it took over an hour to turn back on, when it did, it still had 80%. I unplugged it when it got to 100% and it lasted for less than ten minutes until it died again. I plugged it back in and it took relatively thirty minutes to turn back on, when it did, it had 100%. I tried unplugging it again, this time it lasted until 86% when it died. This continued every time it charged. I tried using three different USB cables, tried plugging it into the wall, my laptop, and even a friend's portable charger, and the problem still happened. It was slowly getting worse (dying as soon as it was unplugged with 100% charge) I went to the apple store and they ran diagnostics on it, it came back with nothing wrong. Battery was fine. The man told me to go home, back up my phone, and restore it to original settings and it should be fine. He expressed to NOT RESTORE MY PHONE TO THE BACK UP. I spent roughly two hours restoring my phone, setting it up as a new phone, and downloading apps, adding email, music, books, etc. As soon as I unplugged it from restoring it, it died again. I am getting angry with the iPhone 5, as my old one died and wouldn't turn back on, and it is the only phone they will give me as a replacement. It took three hours out of my time to go to the apple store and be told something that doesn't even work and would take two hours to accomplish. I am currently using my laptop for iMessages and when in need of my phone having to be with a charger and and be around an outlet at all times. Is this problem fixable without having to go back to the Apple Store or taking apart my phone? My phone is not jailbroken, nor have I downloaded anything onto it besides syncing music from my iTunes Library. It is up to the latest software update.
It may not be relevant but the service bar will always say 'searching' even though I have service and can send messages.

Basics from the manual are restart, reset, restore from backup, restore as NEW device.  If those don't solve your problems, you'll need to go to Apple for evaluation.

  • Slow performance when not plugged in with charger : please help

My recently purchased Macbook pro is and everything is as i excpected and works like a dream
That is until i disconnect the charger and suddenly everything gets incrediby clunky and slow?
i understand after some research that the performance will drop slightly when not connect to charger but it suddenly becomes unworkable and is incredably frustrating to the point where its almost useless.
I have hardly any programmes installed still have over 470Gb free on hard drive
i have run tests through the utility function with no faults reported but cant seem to solve the issue
Has anybody else experienced this? are there any quick fixes or will i have to make the journey to the apple store to get it looked at ??
thanks for reading i would really apreciate some help

    Hello there, LaruaGalliers.
The following Knowledge Base article provides some great troubleshooting steps for your issue:
iPhone and iPod touch: Charging the battery
    http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1476
    Particularly:
    Battery does not charge
Verify that the outlet being used is working.
Try another USB power adapter if available.
If no other USB power adapter is available, try connecting to a high-power USB 2.0 port (not a keyboard). The computer must be turned on and not in sleep or standby mode.
Try another USB cable if available.
iPhone or iPod touch displays the low-battery image and is unresponsive
If you see the image below, charge the iPhone or iPod touch with USB power adapter for at least 15 minutes.
You should see this image when iPhone or iPod touch begins to charge:
If the screen still displays the low-battery icon, try turning the iPhone or iPod touch off and then on again.
If the issue persists, follow these troubleshooting steps.
Thanks for reaching out to Apple Support Communities.
    Cheers,
    Pedro.

  • MacBook Pro 17" power adapter lights orange when NOT plugged into laptop.

My MacBook Pro power adapter lights up orange even though it is not plugged into a device. When I do plug it into my laptop it remains the same and does not charge. Due to this my laptop is now dead. What does this orange light mean?

You should take both your MBP(Macbook Pro) and your power adapter to an Apple Genius bar or an AASP(Authorized Apple Service Provider) for a free evaluation. This is a strange occurance, and it seems that it may be a hardware malfunction.
Make an appointment so you don't have to wait too long.

  • Shuts down when not plugged in

My new (got it in July) MacBook shuts down when it's not plugged in. I usually turn it on and it will last around 2-3 minutes before shutting off completely, then if I try to turn it on it will make the turning on sound and immediately shut down. If I plug it in it will stay on. I looked at downloading OS X 10.4.8 in order to download the suggested firmwire to help with this issue, but will that cause me to lose all of my photos and everything else stored on my computer? Could there be any other solution to my malfunction?
    Thanks for your help!!

    Hi -
When it's plugged in ...does your battery show a charge? Also, if you press the little button on your battery (on the bottom of the macbook) a series of green led's should tell you if you have a charge. just asking this because your macbook may not stay on if your battery is not charging/dead.
Yes, you should also update you system and firmware as well.

  • Power source: Power Adapter even when not plugged in

My 13" Macbook (Late 2008 Version) says that the power source is the power adapter even when it is not plugged in. Because of this it will not switch to the energy saver options for when it is running off of the batter as opposed to being plugged in. Why is it doing this? I have tried resetting the SMC and that has not worked.

mine has started to do the same thing. I have reset the nano 3 times. When I turn it off the "charged battery" icon stays on though the light is off. I plugged it in to the computer and had to reset for the computer to find. After leaving it plugged in for a few hours I unplugged and tried again. Still says "charged" all the time.
I could try a hard reset...., but has any one else experienced this?

  • Nano always displaying charge indicator even when not plugged in!

Following a recent charge, the nano is permantently displaying the charging indicator whether I have it plugged in or not. This means that even when disconnected and switched off, it shows the symbol and runs down the battery - meaning I have to keep it charging all the time when not in use!
I have had the nano working fine for several months - strange that it's started doing this...
