Sudden shutdowns - HP Pavilion P7-1120 with Windows 7

This is a new PC purchased in January 2012 from Best Buy.  It worked well for the first couple of weeks and then began shutting off randomly; sometimes within seconds of starting, one or more times, and sometimes in a half an hour or more.  I have to restart via the start button.  I took the computer to Best Buy where they ran their MRI software, testing all but the hard drive.  Nothing tested wrong and they confirmed no cables were blocking the fans.  The problem resumed when I got home!  Can anyone suggest what could be wrong and how to get a definitive diagnosis and repair?
Thanks.

You have a standard 1 yr warranty from HP. I would contact them for diagnosis and repair.Contact HP

Use the Toshiba recovery disk or the Toshiba HDD recovery option.
If you dont have the Toshiba Recovery disk try the HDD recovery:
    http://aps2.toshiba-tro.de/kb0/HTD1303440001R01.htm
This works only if the recovery image files from Toshiba are still on the HDD:
If you installed the system using another disk as Toshiba recovery disk, this recovery option will not work.

Touch pad light doesn't respond to fn spacebar on Pavilion dv7-7012nr with Windows 7 Home premium 64.  Bought it new from HP.com in October and it has never worked.

    Hi,
I belive that action OR f5 is for the backlit keyboard, not the touchpad. For the touchpad (my machine is also a dv7-70xx) you need to touch the switch (rapidly twice) which is on the left corner of the touchpad. The following image shows where is the light (yellow circle) and where is the swich (red rectangular):
    Hope this helps.

  • Pavilion dv5 - 1217AX with Windows 8 - multiple booting and crashing issues

I have a Pavilion dv5 - 1217AX with Windows 8 operating system. It was upgraded from Vista to windows 8 last year and it worked really very well for about 1 year. Here are the issues I am facing these days
    1. When powered on - Caps lock and Num lock LEDs keep flashing twice and the sequence keeps repeating - I checked the error code on some forums and it sounded like BIOS issue so I flashed the BIOS F38 again (SP46501) but it didn't help. I also thought it could be a memory issue so I removed the memory module and cleaned the slots and fixed the modules again but no luck. I also tried running the laptop using only one module, tried both the modules one by but no changes in error code. Then I thought it could be a toy bettery issue so replaced the toy batter that fits on the motherboard but no luck. I have also tried booting up removing the laptop battery pack but no luck.
So how does it boot now? - Once powered on I keep getting Caps lock Num lock LED flashing issues every time. Then I power off using power on/off button on laptop around 15 times or more then the laptop somehow boots up. There is no fixed pattern, sometimes it boots after 15 attempts, sometimes 50 attempts.
Whats happenes after booting? - Sometimes the screen goes completely blank without any error message on the screen. Sometimes Windows 8 crashes and laptop restarts, when it restarts I never see LED flashing issues (surprising). It crashes when I am watching some videos or playing some games, so looks like ATI Radeon driver issue (driver is 8.970.100.7000 for HD 3400 display card).
Let me know if there are any suggestion to fix the botting and crashing issues faced.

    Hi Expertit ,
At first sight ,seems to be a boot issiu.Did you thry this?
Booting into the Windows 8 setup, select “Repair your computer” in the bottom part of the window, then “Troubleshoot” and “Advanced options”. Here I was given a good reminder of another cool Windows 8 feature. If you have a restore point created you can go back to that working copy of the OS without losing your data.
So the first thing you will want to try is the Automatic Repair.
If that fixes your boot problem, you had it easy and go on to create a restore point for another time you are out of luck. If Windows is unable to fix your issue, read on.
Go back to the Advanced options and choose the Command Prompt. Going for the next easiest way to fix the problem, enter the following four commands into the prompt:
    bootrec /fixmbr
    bootrec /fixboot
    bootrec /scanos
    bootrec /rebuildbcd
After receiving a success confirmation. Close the CMD window and restart your PC.
If you are booted into Windows, excellent! If not, let us know , so we can try some more solutions.
2.If your video crashes , it is probably wrong Catalyst settings.Right click on screen , open Catalyst control settings , set it to high (Radeon) performance.
    Expecting your next post.

  • Hard Drive Failure on HP DV 6000 Pavilion laptop (dv6108nr) with Windows-XPsp3 OS - Need Data Recov

Hard Drive Failure on HP DV 6000 Pavilion laptop - Need Data Recovery Help
HP Pavilion DV 6108 NR, RG365UA, purchased in late 2006 at Best Buy, with Windows XP, upgraded to Service Pack 3. It has a Fujitsu hard disk, 60 gigabyte, partitioned into C: and a Recovery D:.
Windows tries to boot up, but goes to blue screen with the message: "Unmountable Boot Volume" for one second, then just keeps recycling until I force a shutdown.
BIOS Phoenix, hard drive test result: " #1-08 Fail "
I ran a disk analysis/recovery program on the Cdrive and it seemed to show the directory structure intact, and it was able to recover some files. I was using the free one from Seagate (which only recovers small files). The second pass didn't run so well, and during the third run the program said I should not proceed further, and I should contact a professional disk recovery company.
However, the D drive seems to be intact, so, I wonder if the disk is corrupted or just some aspect of the logical C drive is bad. Or does the disk have a mechanical failure, in which case, is a recovery disk even helpful at all?
How can I get the D: to run the recovery software on it? The recovery disks, made by Best Buy, only proceed to the R / F / Q option screen, and when I press R, I get a blue screen every time.
Tapping the F10 key during startup gets me nowhere. Ditto the F11 key.
I dont care about the hard disk; it is the data (files, docs, images, etc) that I want.
I contacted HP to order recovery disks but they are no longer available for my computer. (But see below, "UPDATE")
Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated!
    Jon
    ===============================
    UPDATE:
I found a website that offers the following:
    www.computersurgeons.com/p-13442-recovery-kit-435422-001-for-hp-model-number-dv6108nr.aspx
Recovery Kit 435422-001 For HP Model Number dv6108nr
    Price: $27.00
Recovery Kit Set (An Entire Image of the Computer hard drive when the computer was new)
But I wonder how useful it would be. Early XP , no doubt. And if my hard disk problem is a mechanical fault, would any recovery disk even work? The disks made by Best Buy when I bought mine new in 2006 don't do anything more than go to the R /F/ Q screen and then my computer goes to a blank blue screen when I press R (to recover the OS and apps and data files). And, as I wrote, it is the data that I want, not the disk drive.
Any help here would also be appreciated!
    Jon

    Hi @goshenguy
Thank you for your inquiry, I am happy to help.
I grasp you tested the hard drive from the bios and it failed.  This tests the physical aspcects of the hard drive and when it fails it does require replacement.  You were able to retrieve some of your files using recovery software but not all.
Your recovery partition is still intact and when you try to do a recovery with the disks from Best Buy you do not get past these options R / F / Q  but will not proceed.
Here is a link to Performing an HP System Recovery (Windows XP, 2006 or Later) that may assist you in performing a recovery.
Here is a link to the Maintenance and Service Guide HP Pavilion dv6000 Notebook PC. Please note chapter 3 page 42 for a replacement hard drive part number.
    HP Parts, HP Replacement Parts
If you are still unable to do the recovery, you could try contacting Best Buy for assistance with the recovery kit they provide.
I don't know if it is possible, but you may want to check cloning software to see if you could clone the D partion to the new drive or connect both drives and  try a drive to drive copy of the D partition.
If you were able to successfully put the D partition on a new hard drive you should be able to do a recovery from the  D partition  to take it back to factory.
If none of the above has allowed you to successfully do a recovery, I suggest contacting Best Buy to see it they have  options other then purchasing  a  third party recovery kit.
    Good Luck!

  • Problem on HP Pavilion dv7-6c90el with Windows 8 Pro x64 on Video Card

    good evening,
I just finished installing Windows 8 x64 from Win7 Pro, I was able to find all drivers for my notebook, but I have problems with the video card settings.
My laptop is a HP Pavilion dv7-6c90el with two video cards, one run by the processor because it seems to me to be a part, and the other normally installed on the PC.
The cards are read by Windows as:
device 1: Intel HD Graphics 3000
device 2: AMD Radeon HD 6700m Series (Microsoft Corporation - WDDM v1.20)
the problem resides in the fact that the device should be only one support per second, or deactivated, as it will not. The video card AMD should be set to 1, and the intel 2. Only if I go to the "Device Manager" to disable the intel card, Windows works as if it were not present any video card, also installed driver is not correct because the card is an AMD Radeon HD7690M XT, the problem is that even if I uninstall this driver then always comes back. I also tried to download AMD Catalyst in the latest version, but can not find the card. It 's like the Windows is imposed only use the device 1, which, however, I can not disable the BIOS, because there is no voice. I note that under Windows 7 had no problem.
I ask you to help me because I need the performance of the video card for my work.

    Hi,
    Try the following.
First, uninstall Skype and when this has completed, restart the notebook.
When windows has reloaded, download and reinstall the Chipset driver Here.
When the installation has finished, restart the notebook again.
Let windows fully load, then download the IDT Audio installer on the link below and save it to your Downloads folder.
    http://ftp.hp.com/pub/softpaq/sp45001-45500/sp45044.exe
When done, open windows Control Panel, open Device Manager and open up Sound, Video and Game Controllers.  Right click the IDT device and select Uninstall - you should also get a prompt to remove the current driver, tick the box to allow this and then proceed with the uninstall.
When complete, shut down the notebook, unplug the AC Adapter and then remove the battery.  Hold  down the Power button for 30 seconds.  Re-insert the battery, plug in the AC Adapter and start the notebook.
Let Windows fully load, then open your Downloads folder, right click on the IDT installer and select 'Run as Administrator' to start the installation.  When this has completed, restart the notebook again.
Reinstall Skype and see if the Mic now works Ok.

  • Will a pavilion a1737c work with windows 7 64 bit

The HP Pavilion a1737c came with OS Windows Vista Home Premium SP2 32 Bit,   AMD Athlon 64x2 Dual Core processor 4200+  2.20GHz,  2GB Ram,    Nvidia GeForce 6150 LE Graphics  and  320GB HD. Will this computer run Windows 7 64 Bit well.

Here are the specs for your HP Pavilion a1737c Desktop Computer. I have a HP Pavilion Media Center a1632x Desktop Computer that has very similar specs as your computer. Same chipset, though yours is socket AM2 and mine is socket 939... yours is a couple of months newer with a slightly faster CPU and slightly faster DDR2 memory. I installed 4GB of memory... upgraded from the factory 1GB. Mine runs Windows 7 64-bit in this configuration without any issues and it does it surprisingly well.
Only thing you may want to change later... is a new video graphics card, which may require a new power supply.

  • Hp pavilion dv7 6197sl with windows 8.1 and drivers

HI. i upgrade my laptop to windows 8.1, tried to install all driver for all the intel and amd components from hp support site, but most of them are only compatible with windows 7.
Is there anyting i can do make these drivers working?
    thanks.

    Hi there @Carvin00
Welcome to the HP Support Forums!
I understand that you are looking for drivers for your notebook, for Windows 8.1. Unfortunately that model was only ever sold in configurations with Windows 7, and so HP has not made any customized drivers for it.
See the following which offers a few options: What if I Don't See My Operating System?
Other than that you can either return to Windows 7, and the supported drivers from HP, or if you really want to use Windows 8.1 on this machine, you can use the options in that link. It is certainly possible to find drivers for Windows 8.x, but there is no guarantee that those more generic drivers will work with the set of hardware in the notebook.

  • HP Pavilion G7 Laptop with Windows 8 will not shut down

Yesterday I did a recovery of Windows 8 and my Laptop works great. However, after doing a Windows update my Laptop did a restart displaying the % complete. I left this run overnight. This morning with a black screen, the computer's Fan running a full speed I am unable to shut down the computer.
Holding down the Power button does nothing. I can't even take the battery out because the computer has locked it's access. My Wifi button is stuck on, I've unplugged my computer but it does have a full charge.
So, How Do I Shut It Down? I've never seen this before.

I see you have a G7 notebook but what is your exact model?
How Do I Find My Model Number or Product Number?
I understand that after doing a Windows 8  update it restarted and remained at 0% complete.  You left it overnight and in the morning you had a black screen and the fan  was running but you are unable to power it off.  You tried holding down the power button  but are unable to remove the battery as it has locked access to the battery.
You have removed the AC power but it is still running on battery.
I have never heard of a notebook locking access to the battery before, however some models do not allow battery removal.
First I would try to do a hard reset.  HP Notebook PCs - Use Hard Reset to Resolve Hardware and Software Issues
If you are still unable to power off the notebook, please disconnect from AC power and just let it drain the battery until it eventually turns off.
