Sudden slow start up for iPhoto 08

Hi
Im running the latest version of iphoto (7.1.4), on a pretty good spec machine (15" 2008 model mac book pro, 2.6ghz clock, and 4gb ram.
I have 5800 photos in 45 events.
when i start up iphoto, it takes about 2 full minutes for it to start up, with the spinning coloured wheel leaving me unable to do anything with it.
this is only a recent thing - before, with the same amount of photos on it, it was opening up almost instantaneously.
It seems to have started after installing parallels, but this happens when I dont even have parallels running.
Its also happening when I have no other applications running.
Can anyone help?
Many thanks
Steve

I had this problem also, make sure you have DNS servers listed in your ethernet or wireless settings (whichever you use). Mine only had the default and greyed out 192.168.1.1 I used the OpenDNS 208.67.222.222 and 208.67.220.220 to fix my issue. You can recheck the 'look for shared photos' preference again after that.
I know this post is old, hopefully it helps someone else

  • Slow start up for podcasts

After some recent upgrade, my iTunes 9 is *very slow* starting a podcast. It usually takes 20 seconds or so for the podcast to begin playing after hitting the "play" button or the space bar. This does not seem to be true of music, nor of all podcasts. The pause seems to make the whole computer come to a halt - even screen updating stops for other applications. For a given podcast this is reliably repeatable.

It seems that something went very wrong starting with the 8.0.3 update, there are numerous threads about this. Make sure to report this to Apple via http://www.apple.com/feedback/iphoto.html

  • Slow start up for applications in Mac Mini

Beginning last week all of my most important applications in my 2010 Mac Mini have been slow to start up. Safari takes two minutes to start. MS Word for Mac 2011 takes two minutes, forty seconds to start.  I had never timed these applications before, but I know that each took well under a minute to start.
After the applications start, they operate with the same speed as normal.
This startup problem began at the same time that my Messages application conked out.  With the advice that I got here in the Apple Support Forums, I did two tasks to try to repair Messages.
First I started up in Safe Mode and ran Disk Utility.  “Repair Disk” reported no problem with the hard drive.  “Repair Permissions” spent a long time (over five minutes, IIRC) repairing permissions in many appplications that I never use.  Most of the changes were in iBooks.  I doubt that I have ever turned on that application in this computer. “Repair Permissions” did not repair any permissions in Messages, Word, and, IIRC, Safari.
I report this history with Disk Utility, because I see in other threads a recommendation to try this technique for slow applications.
Second, I logged out of my account in Messages and logged back in.  Doing so restored the function of Messages but had no effect, as far as I can tell, on the speed of start up of my applications.
My hard drive is nowhere being full.  Trash is empty.  I doubt that there is a problem with crowding the RAM, as the problem occurs only when starting the applications.  Once the applications are running, I have found no problems no matter how many applications are running.  Software Update reports everything is up to date.  Software Update did download an update to the Twitter application two days before the present problem arose; I do not know if there is a connection. The problem arose one morning like any other morning when I started the computer.
Any guesses as to what is wrong?   TIA

  • Slow start-up for JSF projects on Sun Java System Application Server 8.2?

App. Server: Sun Java System Application Server 8.2
I really don't understand why a JSF project starts-up so slow on Sun Java System Application Server 8.2.
I've gone through the "Overview of Sun Java System Application Server Performance" guide and tuned my server.
    It's not memory or processor, I am developing on a SunOS 5.8 Generic_117350-27 sun4u sparc SUNW,UltraAX-MP.
The JSF project contains one index.jsp and one login.faces - that's it. But it takes up towards 15 seconds to load the page, if I type:
    http://<domain>:8080/login/
I would believe that the application should be a lot faster.
What can I do to solve this?
    Thanks,

  • 10.6.4 Slow start up and iPhoto blank

    Hi All,
I am having problems with iphoto. When I open it is completely blank. Not like when it is newly installed and not pointing to a library, it is just blank. If you try and import something then events show up on the right but you can't open photos in full screen and other such bugs. Seems to have happened after 10.6.4 update. I also noticed that my mac starts up quite slowly now. I get the blue screen and spinning dashes, dashes go and then reappear about 3 times before going to my desk top. Takes about 2 minutes or so.
I've verified and repaired disk permissions. Repaired disk. Downloaded and installed the combo update again and repaired permissions and the problem persists.
    Can anyone help?
    Thanks.

    HI,
I also noticed that my mac starts up quite slowly now.
How much free space on the startup disk? Right or control click the MacintoshHD icon. Click Get Info. In the Get Info window you will see Capacity and Available. Make sure you always have a minimum of 10% to 15% free disk space at all times.
If disk space isn't the issue, open System Preferences / Accounts then select the Login Items tab. If there are any apps listed there to launch when you startup your Mac, delete them.
Also, go to /Library/Startup Items. Move any files or apps in the Startup Items folder to the Desktop. Restart your Mac.
    And booting in Safe Mode.
After you're in Safe Mode, click the Apple Menu / Restart.

  • Slow restore speed for iPhoto library

After iPhoto '11 destroyed my iPhoto library (known bug--do not open iPhoto '11 until you run software update), I am trying to restore from my Time Capsule. My restore speed seems ridiculously slow. I have gotten about 1gb of the 86gb file in the last hour. I am connected via Cat6 ethernet cable from the Time Capsule to my MB Pro. I can download files off the internet at much greater speeds than this is moving. I have rebooted the Time Capsule and the laptop. The original and subsequent backups go much faster.
Any ideas? I don't really have 32 hours to leave this thing hard wired to the Time Capsule.

As an update, after 30 hours of copying the 86gb file, something happened and the process crapped out with a cryptic message about finding "" (double quotation marks). Could not make sense of the message, and I was 77GB into the copy. I think that means at least most of the pics made it across.
I purchased Back-in-Time to try and copy the file to a different machine. I was able to mount the backup sparse bundle (after I deactivated Time Machine on the original host) and see the file with Back-in-Time on another machine. The copy is proceeding with some serious pace more appropriate to a giagbit ethernet link, and it looks like it will only take a couple of hours.

    Hi everybody,

I have had the same issue (with XFCE). The problem is related to the gnome-keyring-daemon as described in https://bbs.archlinux.org/viewtopic.php?pid=1404608.
So you only need to check if
    gnome-keyring-daemon
    is started automatically at startup.

  • Slow start up / "ghost programs"

I had some trouble with my harddisk when it filled up and became slow, so I made a clean install and copied back my things from Time Machine. But, and this problem happened before that too, my iMac takes forever to startup (about 5 minutes).
And every now and then a program (mostly iTunes) will become non-responsive, but apparently shuts down in a normal fashion when I close it. But the symbol in the dock will say it's still running, and in a mystical way... it is. Because force shut down doesn't work, neither with any program or a restart of the finder, and the only thing working is to do a cold restart of the machine. Interestingly, the activity monitor doesn't find the programs that hangs either, even if they are running.
    I don't understand a thing right now...

    1. Check your Startup Disk. Go to System Preferences/Startup Disk and make sure that your Mac OS X system drive/folder is selected as your startup disk. Otherwise the system could take longer searching for it every time you boot.
    CHECK
    2. Repair Permissions. Open Applications/Utilities/Disk Utility select your hard drive on the left and under the First Aid tab click Repair Disk Permissions.
    CHECK
    3. Verify Disk. While you are in Disk Utility after you Repair the Permissions click Verify Disk. This will check the integrity of your volume directory. If there are any errors that need to be addressed you will have to boot up to your install disk in order to run Repair Disk.
    CHECK
    4. Check your login items list. Go to System Preferences/Accounts/Login items. If there are any Applications there that should not be simply remove it from the list.
    CHECK
    5. Disconnect any external devices for testing purposes. External hard drives, ipods, scanners, printers, have been known at times to cause startup/shutdown issues.
    NOT DONE YET
I've bought a new 1 TB MyBook today so I can remove a Maxtor-disk I have who's been difficult to read from (it doesn't always appear in the Finder), so I'm moving my music and different stuff right now and I'll have to wait some time to do a startup without external disks. In addition I have a 500 GB LaCie with two partions (250 on each, one for Time Machine) who seems to work fine.
It's the actual start up which is the problem, not the login process.
I can live with the slow start up for now, but my main problem is when iTunes and Xtorrent freezes and starts acting like a ghost. Any ideas there? It just happened with Xtorrent again now. It's shut down, but the dock indicates that it's still running...

What exactly are you seeing on the phone's screen ? If the iTunes icon and cable then the phone is in recovery mode, in which case it's too late to take a new backup or to copy any content off the phone - you will have to connect the phone to your computer's iTunes and reset it back to factory defaults, after which you can restore to the last backup that you took or just resync your content to it

Small chance that you have been infected by Trojan.OSX.BASH/QHost.WB.A that was out for about a day back near the end of July. To be certain open Network Utility from your Utilities folder and do a ping for google.ca and google.com. Also do a locate for each. If the results of the ping show an IP address of 91.224.160.26 that confirms the infection. If the ping IP matches any of the locate IPs then your OK.
Do you recall downloading and installing a flash update called "FlashPlayer.pkg.zip"?  That's what caused the problem so you should trash it if you have not already so your not apt to redamage the host file.
To confirm, launch the TextEdit application and select File -> Open from the menu bar. With the file dialog open, press the key combination Command-Shift-G.  In the "Go to the folder:" dialog type "/etc/hosts" without the quotes and click the "Open" button.  Post the contents of the hosts file.

Restart the computer and immediately hold the Option key down.
Select the Recovery partition and continue.
On the next pane, select Disk Utility and continue.
When DU opens, select your hard drive in the left column, click the First Aid tab, the click Repair Disk.
When that is done, quit DU and restart in the usual way.
