Sudden spinning ball - FCE freezes
I recently upgraded from FCE 1.0 to FCEHD. I am editing my first project in FCEHD and in the middle of playing from the timeline, I get the spinning beach ball (with no warning or explanation). This started after about one week of working on this project. My system seems to be frozen and I must do a Force Quit. I have watched the ball spinning for several minutes (thinking it would stop), but it never does. This now happens EVERY time I try to edit my project and play from the timeline (sometimes after adding only one clip) My project files (as well as my scratch files) are all on a LaCie external HD. Could that be the problem?
Any help would be appreciated.
Gail
To Repair Permissions you have to open: Applications > Utilities > Disk Utility, then choose your HD and click "Repair Permissions".To see your crash log, hit a search for FinalCutExpressHD.crash log to see if there is something you understand.Even better when the crash occurs and before you turn off look at Applications > Utilities > System Profiler > System log. It may turn out to be CGDrawbitmap is obsolete etc.
If you can initiate a completely new project, even a very small one, it would indicate if the problem is in the project or in FCE.

Spinning ball, finder freezes & LaCie HD fails
Oh Hi!! Not sure where to put this at all as I seem to ahve multiple problems which is either a coincidence or something/onething is seriously wrong. I have been working fine for months with my external HD, DVD drive & MBP but over the last few days i have experienced problems with all 3. Granted, the MBP is quite old now and I am running FCP on it at times but this has been fine for a while too. The 1st thing to show was the lacie DVD drive suddenly showing me error messages when trying to mount blank dics - after a few times shutting off and on I have managed to get that working again.
Thinking no more of it, today i was working on the mbp in Word and had a spinning ball for so long i had to force quit to get any further - this is quite unusual and i have to say, since then things have not been so sweet.
After finishing that work I put my external d2 on to do some video stuff with FCP and the lacie HD made the strangest whirring noises which i have not heard before. FCP froxe so i forced quite again without ejecting HD and things went from bad to worse. Unplugged (including power cable) ext HD for 30mins, plugged back in & switched on and all it did was make ticking noises for 15mins before finally mounting (phew - haven't backed up onto disc in ages). However, when i try to go through finder to a file on the lacie when it is sleep-mode - it then causes Finder to start spinning that ball again until i have to force quit.
Sorry for the lengthy description but i don't know whether i have lacie ext HD problems, or is it MBP and appls/finder or.........?????
Does anyone have any ideas on this or where i should start to try and solve it?
Many thanks for any info or advice
Jothankyou both for your responses!
i will check clock battery - ths is a new one to me so would not have thought about it at all......
I have been using the same DVDs CDs for months with this equipment ad has always been ok till now - philips dvd-r?
I will have to try and get d2 ext mounted today to do some backing-up, i know, i'm so lazy but i got quite complacent with the lacie ext as everything is backed-up into that and i hoped i was doing enough.
the ext. HD is only a year old and I wouldn't expect that to fail yet - it's only on when i'm using video and backing-up so hardly overworked.
we'll see what happens today
thanks again for your thougts for now -
Running Mail.app give spinning ball and freezes computer
My wife and I have different accounts on an iMac (2.33 GHz Intel Core 2 Duo) running 10.7.4. Her Mail.app has recently stopped working. When she launches Mail.app, the computer freezes and she sees the spinning ball. On my side of the computer, the Mail.app is still working. Any suggestions on how I can get her Mail program running again?
Thank you.Donald and others:
This problem has been ongoing for about a week now. During that time, my wife has logged in and out of her account several times, and I’ve rebooted the iMac several times. I've also run fsck, repaired disk permissions, and rebuilt the directory with Diskwarrior. But Mail.app still isn't working.
I don’t know how it’s done nowadays, but there used to be plist files that stored preferences for particular apps. Every now and then one of those files would become corrupted, and when that happened, the performance of the app would be negatively affected. At times, the problem could be solved simply by deleted the right preference files. I bring up this subject because, at lease in some crude sense, Mail.app is behaving as if it had a corrupted plist file.
Anyway, if someone would tell me what steps I should go through to attempt to solve this problem, I would appreciate it.

Spinning ball, hard drive, macbook pro
Dear Experts
I have mid 2009 Macbook pro (2.66 Ghz). I am frequently running into spinning ball that freezes my mac even for opening Safari, iPhoto etc. I am user of CPU demending softwares. Here is what I did till now
1. Free space on HDD is 78 GB (out of 320 GB HDD)
2. Ran Disk utility --> verified.
3. SMART status is OK.
4. Fixed all permissions.
5. Ran disk tool pro--> SMART status OK
6. Fixed bad alias
7. Removed all cache, junk, trash with CleanMyMac.
However, problems is persisted. I ran a bad sector check on disk tool pro and it shows all time that scan for bad sectors is failed while rest of the tests passed. I wonder whether my HDD is failing or what? I have already backed up on Time Machine.
Any experts has comments/suggestions? That will be of great help.
Thanks
SaiWhat you describe seems indicative of hard drive failure. You did yourself no favor, however, by running "CleanMyMac" which may have deleted some very important files.
I would recommend doing a full and complete reinstallation of everything. If you still have the 'beachballing' then I would try replacing the drive.

Permissions and constant spinning ball after Upgrade
Hey Guys,
I upgraded to Snow Leopard last thursday and ever since I get the spinning ball when I try to execute more complex file operations.
e.g.
- Unpacking a large (1,8GB+) with stuffit -> spinning ball and freezes for more than 5 minutes
- Deleting a lot of files (2,4 million) -> complete freeze, woke up after 45 minutes
I checked with the permissions and it fixed 50+ broken permissions plus it is unable to fix two warnings: "the suid-file .. was changed and will not be fixed"
The diskcheck utility discovered no problem with the drive.
Further symptoms include:
Firefox makes the system freeze for minutes on end.
Mail crashes without warning.. system freeze ensues.
All these problems only came up after the upgrade to snow leopard.
I am thinking of doing a time machine rollback to leopard.
Any Ideas?Hi All,
I am having this problem too! Whenever I try to launch any application, the rainbow ball will show up and keep spinning until 'no respond' from the application. Then I have to use Force Quit to quit the application.
I have tried to reinstall Snow Leopard but it does not help. Same problem persist.
Now, I have no other choice but to reinstall Leopard and see how it goes.
Really a waste of time! Even updated to 10.6.1 also did not rectify the problem.
Hope APPLE will do something about this ASAP.
Thanks
Regards,
chityc. -
Powerpoint spinning ball with change from Tiger to Snow Leopard
I recently replaced my G4s with a MacMini and a MacBook Pro. My Microsoft Office 2004 (all updates installed) works just fine in Word and Excel, but to attempt to open PowerPoint on either machine results in a spinning ball and freezing the entire computer.
I have done everything that the Microsoft website suggests, and nothing changes. Is this a nefarious plot by Microsoft to force me to buy Office 2011, or is there something else I can do to make this work. Help!Uninstall Off '04 and reinstall it.

TextEdit problems: causes spinning ball/freezes, can't make it default app
I'm having some serious problems with, of all things, TextEdit. On an iMac running 10.4.11 with TextEdit v. 1.4 (the standard version for Tiger), I've been having the following two major issues:
1. About once per day, or at least once every two days, for absolutely no perceivable reason, while typing in TextEdit, I get the "spinning beach ball"; the same pattern happens every time: I wait about 6 minutes for the beach ball to stop spinning, then I try to "save" my open document; this causes another six-minute spin/wait, after which it saves. Then I try to "Quit" Textedit, and after another six-minute spin, it finally quits. Then, any successive action on my part -- clicking an application icon in the dock, or doing command-option-escape to force quit things, or basically anything at all, causes the spinning ball to return, and this time it will not go away. I've waited as long as two hours, and it just keeps spinning. Command-option-escape does nothing -- no response. Nor does command-period, or anything I could think of. The only way out of the freeze is to press the power button and turn off the computer. Terrible!
This ONLY happens when I am working in TextEdit -- no other application causes the problem. And it only happens when I have an unsaved TextEdit document topmost on the screen. It has happened at least 30 times now, consistently, so it's not a one-time glitch. It has even happened when TextEdit was the ONLY application running -- so it couldn't be another application causing the problem. I had thought that "Classic" was causing the problem, because I often have Classic running to use a legacy OS9 application, but even when I restarted the computer and did not ever launch Classic, I still got the TextEdit-freeze problem.
2. None of my TextEdit documents have TextEdit as their default launch application. Yes, I know about single-clicking the file, pressing "command-I" and in the Info box changing the "Open With" application to "TextEdit," and also then clicking on "change all" so that all similar files are opened with the same application. When I attempt this, it apparently makes the change, but in fact nothing happens: even after making the change, double-clicking the files does not launch TextEdit. In fact, it launches nothing at all, because when I check command-I again, the launch application has reverted to either "None", or to something mysterious called "ams1108.html", which not only is not an application, but it doesn't even exist on my computer (I searched for it).
HOWEVER, if TextEdit is already running, then when I double-click on any of my text documents, they will then open in TextEdit. But if TextEdit is not currently running, they won't open in it.
This applies to any file that has a visible or hidden "txt" or "rtf" or other normal TextEdit-compatible extension. Basically, any text file.
What is going on? I thought TextEdit was the most stable, most reliable application in all of Apple-dom. And I've been using it for years and years, but this problem has only recently started in the past couple months. I have no memory of making any changes to my computer that could have precipitated the change. Also: are these two problems related to each other?
I really don't know what to do. Any suggestions for fixing this problem would be appreciated. (And no, I don't have the original 10.4 install disks, so I can't re-install TextEdit, unless it can be downloaded somewhere). Thanks.OK, Carolyn, I wrote down all my prefs (glad I did), trashed the prefs file, restarted, relaunched TextEdit, reset all my preferences to my liking (which had reverted to default settings), quit TextEdit. Then I tried double-clicking some text files -- and the same problem (#2 above) persists. None of my TextEdit or text files have TextEdit as the default launch application -- they're still all either "None" or "ams1108.html". And, as before, if I try to change it to "TextEdit" in the file's info box, then click on "change all," it does not work: not only does it not change all the text files to be TextEdit, but clicking "change all" will cause the file in question to revert to "None" or "ams1108.html". However, if I only change the default app for that one file to TextEdit, and don't click "change all," then it will stick -- for now at least. (Though I wouldn't be surprised if after a restart they all changed back to "None.")
The short assessment is: trashing the prefs did NOT fix problem #2 above. It may or may not have fixed problem #1 -- hard to tell immediately, since the only way to find out is the use TextEdit for two days.
So, setting aside problem #1 for now: any suggestions for fixing problem #2 (default app can't be changed to TextEdit by clicking "change all")? I have thousands and thousands of TextEdit files I use, so changing them all manually one-by-one isn't feasible. Thanks. -

Mar 17, 2015, 12:07:54 PM /Library/Logs/DiagnosticReports/cfprefsd_2015-03-17-120754_[redacted].crashSeems to have worked.
We hooked up the external HD, turned on Time Machine, and everything backed up.
Then we ran Disk Utility. The disk repair required the reboot thing and took two tries. Then repaired permissions. Also updated Flash.
Seems to be running okay now, but we have ordered a new SSD (as well as a new iMac 5k ). We use multiple computers so hoping we can get a couple more years of use out of this old computer as it ran fast and fine until this problem.
Thank you so much for your help! We really appreciate it. -
MBP retina + Yosemite + MAGSAFE CONNECTED = freeze and spinning ball!!
I'm really losing my mind...
Friday I finally installed Yosemite 10.10 on my mbp retina. At the beginning everything was perfect, then new updates like iphoto and imovie started to pop up so I decided to download them. At some point of the download the spinning ball appeared but didn't want to go away, even after 5 minutes. I couldn't use my macbook so I decided to force shut down.
After restarting I could log in, but as soon as I moved the cursor to the dock and clicked on the apps I needed to open (Mail and Chorme) everything froze and the spinning ball appeared again.
Force shut down again.
The magsafe was connected at all time.
Then I decided to go to the Apple Store to solve the problem. Once I explained the problem to the guy and turned on the macbook in front of him, everything started to work again perfectly.
I looked like a freaking idiot.
He had no explanation, he just told me to use time machine to backup my data and bring the macbook there in case the issue would appear again.
Yes I tried all the possible procedures pressing the keys when the macbook is turned on. (I kept for last the pram reset and smc reset)
Nothing.
Then this morning I realized the freezing at startup would occur only if the magsafe was connected!!! This is also why at the Apple store there was no problem at startup....no magsafe connected. I tried a few times to use the macbook normally with the battery (even now that I'm writing), and it's working perfectly!! But as soon as I connect the magsafe, go to the dock to open apps or simply click on the google chrome tabs to type in a website, everything starts to freeze again and the spinning ball stays there indefinitely.
I also tried the utility disc (in normal and safe mode). It says everything is ok.
I even tried to delete completely iphoto, imovie and caffeine and to reinstall Yosemite.
I don't want to go to the Apple Store now because it's full of people (iphone 6 just got released here in China).
Could someone help me understand what is the problem??
Thank you for all the help you can provideYesterday it started to do the same even with the battery! So it was impossible for me to use it. I went to the apple store...they didn't know what to tell me since the system just got released.
They ran a few tests on my macbook and it showed that it wasn't an hardware issue, it was the software. So they wanted to do a backup of my data (from one of their macbooks) but couldn't because somehow there was a password for Firevault. I never put it!! And it's not the same I always choose for my system.
Result? They had to erase everything (I'm angry because I lost a lot of my work files) and now I'm back to Mavericks 10.9.5 and I have no idea when I'll decide to update again to Yosemite.
Since Steve Jobs passed away Apple is not the same.
My girlfriend has an iphone 5, she installed IOS 8 and everything is slow as ****. Seriously.
It's really disappointing and I (we) don't trust Apple anymore. -

Hi,
I have a Folder called "Pictures" (My Pictures seems a bit "Windowsy" to me)
I don't have a Media folder inside there.
It would help to know if this is actually within the iTunes Library
Having said that I tend to use Eric's Method.
Pic of My own Card in the Contacts list
It shows where I have used Faces (from iPhoto) and Defaults (Login pic choices for the Account pic).
My iChat/Messages pic is the same Signature pic as used here and is in the Recents Tab on show.
You can even use the Camera if one is attached (Mac Minis and Mac Pro require External Cameras).
Drag and Drop is my preferred method.

Spinning rainbow ball of freezing death/annoyance issue.
my issue started a month or 2 ago while playing diablo 3 and happened everytime i played. it would freeze and give me the rainbow spinning ball. nothing i could do to close the game would work so i had to do a power cycle each time. that issue would only happen when i played that game. but not anymore, starting on the 4/10/15 it now happens all the time regardless of what I’m doing. it’s doing it right now as i type this at random times and the length of the freeze is 5 seconds to 1 minute. the freezing is so bad now, and i just know someone will ask me to go to the 'console' but i have tried many times to do that but the freezing is so often i can't get any info. any help or suggestions would be nice. i do live 30 minutes from a apple store so i could go to the genius bar, does it cost to do a diagnostic?

IDVD Freezes / Spinning Ball of Death
So my iDVD (v5) was pretty much freezing and giving me the spinning ball of death everytime I tried to either create a new project or open an old one. Therefore... my solution was to go out and purchase iLife 6 (w/ the new iDVD 6) thinking would solve the problem. That was not the case.
Pretty much after opening iDVD and selecting; "new project"... the program loads the themes and then displays the main iDVD window... but then spins the ball and does not stop. I am forced to "force quit".
I looked on the Discussion boards and attempted several fixes...
- erasing the iDVD themes and reinstalling
- deleted iLife and reinstalling
- creating a new user account
- using Disk Utl to repair permissions
- finally erasing the plist preferences.
None of these solutions worked. All my other iLife and Final Cut Pro Studio applications work just fine (including DVD Studio Pro - which is my work around right now).
My final solution may be to reisntall TIGER... but I really don't want to do that. Any thoughts would be appreciated!!!!!!
This issue is similiar to the following posting... but those solutions did not work:
http://discussions.apple.com/thread.jspa?messageID=1901849#1901849Have you tried cleaning out the system caches using OnyX? You can download it at: http://macapple.free.fr/forum/index.php. I have had the same problems. I was trying to use Memorex 16x media. I followed all the suggestions (closing all applications, especially the browser, deleting the iDVD plist file, running Onyx, and repairing permissions, plus switching to 8x media). I have had consistent success since.
I use an external firewire LaCie d2 burner which has a NEC 3500A. But I am still using iDVD 5. I hope this will help.

7.4.2 spinning ball freezes
I am also having issues with iTunes after upgrading to 7.4.2. I am on a MacBook and use an external hd to store my music. After finally upgrading last week, iTunes opened up fine and I started to download new podcasts. But while downloading it froze and the spinning wheel appeared. After a long while I forced quit (force quitted?) and tried again. From that point on, I can open iTunes and see everything, but when I click on anything, even the scroll bar, it immediately freezes with our friend the spinning ball. Does anyone have a solution for this? Do I need to uninstall/reinstall? Downgrade from a third party? I am not excited abot either of those options.
Thanks.Yes, same issue and performance loss. I spoke to a tech rep from Adobe at length the other day, and he tells me this is a normal occurance if using the soften skin function. The more adjustments (3 on one photo in my case) the slower the preview/loading will be and the slower the recovery in going on to another adjustment.
I had two other images in the same library/folder that also had the same adjustments on them. After resetting them back to the default, they now load/preview in seconds. The one image I have left with adjustments still takes from 30-60 seconds to preview/load, but only in the develop module.
