Sudden unexpected shutdowns on startup

Sudden unexpected shutdowns a few seconds after startup. Boot, happy mac and drive starts spinning , then Sri e winds down and shutoff. Booted fine from system DVD. Ran disk first aid from dvd, first aid starts, drives start spinning, then drive stops and again system poweroff. Help?

Sorry for the bad syntax I'm having to post all this through my touch.

  • Sudden unexpected shutdown

This morning during my regular routine - suddenly my iMac made a strange noise and shutdown.
It made a sort of crackling sound after that and the front sleep light was flashing very crazily. The system would not boot at all.
I did some research on these boards and determined that it might be a memory issue. I opened my iMac and took out the third party (Crucial) 512MB memory stick that I installed after buying the system.
The system booted up fine with the Apple 512MB of ram - so far so good.
I re-opened the system and re-installed the Crucial ram. The system booted up fine and nothing appears to be wrong.
While the system was open I check the PSU for bad capacitors (had that problem about a year ago) and found none.
This really has me scratching my head. Does anyone have any ideas? I now have the nagging feeling that my iMac is not long for this world. Please let me know if you have had a similar incident.

The first thing to check in this sort of situation is that the problem is not simply due to the powercord issue referred to at http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=86817
If this isn't the cause of your problem then a problem with the Power Supply (PSU) is the next most probable cause.
I check the PSU for bad capacitor
The PSU doesn't actually have capacitors. Its the motherboard (aka "midframe") on the earliest generation of iMac G5's only, that havecapacitor problems.

  • Programs Unexpectedly Shutdown

I have had my macbook for about one year. Since using it I have noticed that some programs will unexpectedly shutdown while I am using them. For instance, when I am in Word or playing Zoo Tycoon the program will suddenly close and a message will appear that says: "Word/Zoo Tycoon has unexpectedly shutdown." It then asks if I would like to Report or Restart.
I thought both issues might have to do with the age of the programs, that perhaps they were not completely compatible with the newer macbook operating system. I decided to purchase iWork 06 hoping that using the latest Apple word processing software would alleviate my word processing anxieties (and as for Zoo Tycoon, I simply lost interest and stopped playing). After installing iWork I did have some (possibly unrelated) trouble with frequent kernal panics, but I contacted technical support and have not had trouble since.
Anyways, yesterday I was using iPhoto quite extensively when it shutdown unexpectedly. That makes three programs in total that have done this. I did a quick internet search for unexpected shutdowns in macbooks but most of them seem to be more serious, referring to the entire computer shutting down, which is not the case for me.
I'm beginning to think that it has something to do with how long I am in the programs - that maybe the computer gets overheated and therefore shuts the programs down. Usually if the program shuts down once it doesn't happen again that day so it's not like this is completely unbearable, it's just kind of annoying and doesn't seem normal.
Obviously I'm not very computer savvy. I mainly use my laptop for school so I can deal with these unexpected program shutdowns (as I have been since I got it) but since my warranty is expiring soon I thought it couldn't hurt to ask, just in case there is something more serious going on.
So finally (and sorry it has taken me so long) my question is:
Is it normal for programs to unexpectedly shutdown when you are in them for too long?
And if not, how serious of an issue it is? Should I look into getting my laptop replaced?

Replacing your MacBook won't fix this. It is a software issue. It is annoying but I always report what i was doing when it shut down. That may help the programmers fix the reasons for this. NeoOffice usually does this when I am closing it. I have found if I close the document before I shut down it doesn't happen. No rhyme or reason on the others it just happens.

  • Probook 4320s unexpected shutdowns every 15 minutes

    Dear all,
I have a ProBook 4320s, January 2010 I bough it(i3 380M, Motherboard: HP 1421 KBC Version 53.36, Chipset: Havendale/Clarkdale Host Bridge Rev. 02, Southbridge: Intel HM57 Rev. 05). At the beginning it started to get really slow and shut down unexpectedly which i could understand that it was from overheating. So I remove the dust from the fan with compressed air, and I bought a cooler, pretty good one ZALMAN NC1000. Then the charger broke, and i had some unexpected shutdowns dew to battery drain. I bought a new charger. Now I get unexpected shutdowns, sometimes every 15 minutes, not from overheating i can understand that. When i turn again the laptop on sometimes i get startup repair and local disk C check. Do you know what might be the problem and how to proceed??
    Thank you

    Norbert,
    Have you solved this problem?
I, too, have a T60P with the same issue.  I put it to sleep using Fn + F4.  When I resume by pressing Fn, the power light turns off.  To get the light to go on again, I need to unplug and replug in the power supply (I'm not using the battery).  I can then restart the machine.
This behavior only started a few weeks ago.  And I don't know if it's time related.
I thought it might be related to my using a docking station, but swapping docking stations made no difference.
Thanks for any tips you may have.
    Michael

  • Different ways to shutdown and startup instance in 10g

I have just installed 10g on my win2003 server. There seems to be 3 different ways to shutdown / startup an instance in 10g.
    1. via SQLPLUS (how its always been) with shutdown and startup commands
    2. via the new OEM Web interface
    3. Start / Stop the NT Service for the instance
    questions:
    - Did I miss anything other methods?
    - how come OEM ask for O/S login as well as DB login, when shutdown or startup? but via SQLPLUS I only have to login using as DBA? different level of security?
    - When shutdown via either SQLPLUS or OEM, the NT service is still shown as "started"? so does this mean that the NT service is more than the oracle instance???
    Thanks
    Clo

how come OEM ask for O/S login as well as DB loginWith SQL*Plus, you are already logged into the Operating System. There is a OS session in progress. With OEM web interface, it has to first start a OS session and then connect to Oracle using Oracle credentials supplied to actually shutdown the DB.
the NT service is still shown as "started"? The difference between NT service started or not started (given that the database was already shutdown) will be:
When NT service is started but the DB is shutdown, your users will get this error message:
    Enter user-name: scott
    Enter password:
    ERROR:
    ORA-01034: ORACLE not available
ORA-27101: shared memory realm does not exist
Enter user-name:When NT service is stopped, your users will get this error message:
    Enter user-name: scott
    Enter password:
    ERROR:
    ORA-12560: TNS:protocol adapter error
Enter user-name:The NT service needs to be running for you to be able to do a STARTUP or SHUTDOWN on the database. You will NOT be able to STARTUP if the NT service was not running (STARTUP will not start your NT service automatically).

  • How to check Server Shutdown and Startup History in SAP

Hi guru's . One of the background job failed on saturday. And i want check the duration and the history when the server shutdown and startup. I can check the server startup time at ST02 t-code. But i want to check the entire history of server shut down. Please guide me through. Thanks.

    Dear Ram,
You can see the System logs in SM21 . Background job failure can be viewed in SM37 .
As said before go through \usr\sap\TST\DVEBMGS00\work directory and see the logs. Files like dev_disp , dev_ms ,dev_rfc.trc ,stderr1,stderr2,stderr3,stderr4 will have the log information  .  These files will have the information after the last  system start .
Anyway if want to see the old logs before server shutdown , see the old logs in old files like dev_disp.old,dev_ms.old .

  • Suddenly mac shutdown time increased!!!!

    Hi,
I have a mac book pro (Retina) and suddenly the shutdown time has been increased. Whats the problem??
1st it use to shutdown in 2-4 sec but now it takes more than 30-40 sec & sometime even more than tht!!!
How can i resolve this issue??
    Thanks
    Amar

I have exactly the same issue with both my late 2011 Macbook Pro with SSD and my new 11" Macbook Air since upgrading to Mountain Lion. Takes around 30secs to shutdown whereas previously 2 second shutdown - very frustrating when using the machines on the move and in a hurry which was one reason I chose SSD drives in the first place.

  • If my computer gets unexpectedly shutdown then why on restarting computer firefox keeps me logged in even when saving password is disabled ?

my computer gets unexpectedly shutdown while i was logged in my gmail and facebook account and when restarted my system and opened facebook and gmail ,i found that i was logged in.This is when i have unchecked ''''''password remember'''''' option and '''keep me logged in''' option .How to solve it ?

You can set the pref <b>browser.sessionstore.privacy_level</b> to 2 (never) or 1 (non-HTTPS, default in Firefox 3 versions) on the <b>about:config</b> page to disable saving cookies via session restore.
You can change the browser.sessionstore.privacy_level_deferred pref that is used when you do not reopen the previous session automatically via "Show my windows and tabs from last time".

  • Image creation with MDT task sequence- "Windows has recovered from an unexpected shutdown"

I'm using MDT 2012 U1 to build and capture a Windows 7 x86 image for deployment with ConfigMgr 2012 SP1.  I'm using the standard client task sequence in MDT.
The MDT task sequence consistently fails after the reboot in the "Postinstall" group.  The install OS, Copy Scripts, Configure, Inject Drivers, Next Phase, and Restart Computer tasks all execute successfully, then the MDT-initiated reboot
completes successfully.  There is nothing else helpful in the SMSTS.LOG, these are the last entries in the log:
Successfully complete the action (Restart Computer) with the exit win32 code 0
    Sending status message
Executing in non SMS standalone mode.  Ignoring send a task execution status message request
Set a global environment variable _SMSTSLastActionRetCode=0
Set a global environment variable _SMSTSLastActionSucceeded=true
    Expand a string %_SMSTSMDataPath%\Logs
    Deleting file without retrying
The error message on the reference computer says, "Windows has recovered from an unexpected shutdown" along with "An existing in-progress deployment was found but is not in an expected state.  Would you like to ignore this in-progress
deployment and start a new one?"
I have found one post that suggested modifying customsettings.ini with  HideShell=Yes, which I tried.  It didn't help.
I am not sure why MDT thinks the reboot was unexpected?  Has anybody run into this?  What steps can I take to narrow down the problem?
    Any help/suggestions are appreciated.
    Thanks,
    FP

    Thanks for your reply Phil.
Setuperr.log is empty, zero bytes.  Setupact.log looks good to me, it has these entries at the end:
OrchestrateUpdateImageState: Updating image state from [IMAGE_STATE_UNDEPLOYABLE] --> [Image_State_Complete]
    OOBELdr.exe exiting with code [0x0]...
Process exited with exit code [0x0]
    c:\windows\panther\SetupInfo succeeded.
    c:\windows\panther\setupinfo.
    Windeploy.exe exiting with code [0x0]
    SetupSQM Started
    Panther path is C:\windows\Panther
    SQM not opted in
    SetupSQM is finished
Our image environment was created during an MCS Engagement, so we have the solution pack and there are many variables in customsettings.ini.  I will need to find out how to narrow this down but I'm not finding a log file that tells me where it's choking...
    Any suggestions are appreciated.
    Thanks,
    FP

  • Please help for my unexpected shutdown W510!!!

Since I used my W510 ( 43192NU with Windows 7 32bit ) from April 2010, I did experienced with unexpected shutdown. First, I thought it was my improperly use. But now, it shutdown unexpectedly even 3 times a week. Did anyone got the same experienced? Please help me...

I have the same exact problem!!!
    And it drives me crazy.
It happens only when my battery is charging (that is, it's not at 100%).
If the battery is fully charged, and I'm on AC power as well, all works o.k., but as soon as the battery is low (say 50%) and I plug it in, and put some load on the system (using VMware a lot) it runs for a while then dies instantaneously. No gradual shut-down - just shuts off.
It just happened again a few minutes ago, and I lost an important VMware file.
I called Lenovo support a few months ago, and they wanted me to send the laptop in for a week to make sure there is really a problem.
Any other input/comments would be appreciated.
BTW, I purchased the W510 in February 2010.

  • The operation of my computer (Mac OS X 10.6.8) has been frequently interrupted by an unexpected shutdown. How to solve the problem?

    Dear Sirs, owners and managers
    Apple Support:
I appreciate the opportunity given to request either always valuable assistance of masters.
It happens that I have been supporting, for some time, inopportune and unexpected shutdowns
of my Mac, with losses mounting and haul what I write in TextEdit.
I ask, in this situation indigestible, a help of you to resolve this anomaly and thus be able to
take back a firm and smooth operation of the MAC.
    Sincerely,
    Ricardo Cutolo

    Given your problem statement:
inopportune and unexpected shutdowns of my Mac
Unexpected hard shutdowns are usually either severe operating system corruptions, or they're triggered by hardware errors.   Bad memory, bad processors, bad power, bad disk, bad main board, etc.
A likely first step is to archive (back up) your data onto an external disk.  Get a good backup.
After that (and possibly a second, verified, external-disk backup), check your system log for any potential clues that might be logged there.   If there is nothing obvious, then ensure that all external devices (other than a keyboard and mouse) are disconnected, and see if the problems persist.
If you continue to have problems, then you'll likely have to boot the DVD installer dis and use Disk Utility to wipe the disk, and reinstall Mac OS X Snow Leopard onto the disk, and migrate your archive back in as part of the installation.
If the problems persist after the reinstallation, then it's probably a hardware error with whichever Mac is involved here.  If this is a new Mac or under support, call Apple support and see what they have to say.  If you have a local Apple store, you'll check with the folks at the Genius Bar for assistance.

I talked to customer support and they said it was a OS problem and I should order a set of 6 Recovery DVDs. i want to know if using the HP recovery disk

    2) It resets the notebook to factory condition?
    3) There is an option of recovery disk which I should specifically ask for?

  • Unexpectely shutdown

It's a MacBook pro late 2011. OS X Mountain lion. For several weeks This MacBook pro Unexpectely  Shuting down &amp; not charging ( after unexpected shutdown ). Please help me for solve this problem.

Well then you are SOL. It is going to cost you plenty to have it fixed, Sorry.
With all Mac notebooks Apple will more then likely say the Logic board needs replacing. That is because everything on/in a Mac notebook is soldered to the Logic board, CPU, GPU and all the ports. The only parts that aren't are the battery, HDD, DVD drive, heatsink system and fans and the RAM. And in cases like yours the only real fix is to replace the Logic board.
As to the power adapter, you are talking about the AC power system right, you can replace that and or find someone that has a Mac and try theirs. But in the end it is more then likely your Mac that is the problem. More then likely the power system in the Mac with is part of the Logic board.
    Good Luck.
