Sudden, unexplainable lag and performance problems making gaming impossible

Last week I was happily gaming with all the settings on high.  I went away for the weekend and when I came back, it is absolutely impossible to play because of lag.  When I put all the settings at their very lowest, it is almost possible to play but, of course, the images look terrible.  What happened?!
I have a dv7t-6000 pavilion.  I tried installing the latest drivers for my graphics card, but when I did that the game was simply a black screen and wouldn't pull up at all, so I uninstalled them.  Now it runs, but only just.  I have all updates for Windows 7 64-bit.
I'm still under warranty, do I need to ask for a new video card, or what?

Give me your graphics card specifications and name.  Most likelyl it's the switchable graphics issue, like in many of the other HP laptops out there.  What you can do, if you are still under the 21 day return period, is that you can return you laptop and exchange it for another laptop, or gert a full refund altogether.  I would recommend this since HP is not a great gaming notebook brand.

  • IPad 1 email and performance problems ios5

Since I upgraded my iPad 1(wifi only) to iOS 5' I have been having numerous performance problems, and my email continuously sys "checking Email". I have tried restarting my iPod ith no luck. Deleting d reading the accounts woks briefly, but after 15-20 minutes the email problem ones back. The update has relly crippled my iPad.
Has anyone else had this problem? Any ideas to resolve it?
    Regards,
    Jason

While Downgrading is not actually supported by Apple I found a video on You Type that walked me through it. Just do a search on You tube and you will find it. The one I used was by lizards821. His videos cover any errors you might have.
Once I reverted, I then did a restore from the backup I made when upgrading to IOS 5 and all of my apps were restored while keeping my downgraded IOS.
Good Luck, it was well worth it for me. I have the stable IPAD I love so much back again.

I have no idea how to close it, so i have to force to shut down the computer by pressing the power button 5 seconds.
    SO WHATS THAT PROBLEM?
I HAVE SEND TO SERVICE CENTRE TWICE, IT JUST COMES OUT THE SAME PROBLEM!
    Anyone help me?
    thx

Hard to believe, the problem is back!
Everything worked just fine last night. This morning I turn the iMac on and the problems are back: Extremely long time to startup, application hangs, everything super slow.
    Any ideas?
I restarted in verbose mode and took some pictures, in case that helps...

  • Mac suddenly very slow and other problems

Since a few days ago I've been experiencing the following problems:
+ VERY long startup time (more than four minutes vs. about a minute previously).
+ When starting an application, the system frequently hangs for a few seconds. (While it's hanging, sometimes the process is marked "doesn't react" in Activity Monitor).
+ Everything feels much slower and less responsive than it used to be and I'm frequently getting the spinning pinwheel.
+ Parallels doesn't start any more. After double-clicking the Parallels desktop icon, the icon jumps up and down in the dock for a little while and then just disappears.
The problem may or may not be related to the removal of my Bootcamp partition, which I did shortly before the problems started to occur. I don't remember if the problems started immediately after the removal of the Bootcamp partition but I think it's likely that there is a connection.
I did lots of things to find the cause and solve the problem, to no avail:
+ Made sure that after the Bootcamp removal the Mac HD is selected as the start volume.
+ Checked the HD using Disc Utility (no errors found)
+ Repaired permissions using Disc Utility
+ Created a new user account (problem persisted)
    + Cleared system caches
+ Ran various checks using Onyx (no problems found)
+ Deleted PRAM by starting up and pressing ALT-CMD-R-P
+ Checked for viruses (no viruses found)
    + Unplugged all USB devices
+ Reinstalled OS X ("archive and install")
    None of this helped.
    Observations:
+ I tried to start in safe mode but that made the startup procedure even slower, I was seeing the Apple logo and the grey spinning wheel for almost 10 minutes alone.
+ According to Activity Monitor there's always lots of free memory and CPU power.
I'm really clueless as to what else I could do other than wiping the HD and reinstalling everything from scratch or sending the machine back to Apple. Any ideas would be *very much appreciated*!

  • KT6 Delta stability and performance problems

    Hi all!
My brother and I recently assembled my new computer. Since then I’ve been experiencing two problems that really bug me. I’m no expert at this stuff so if you guys need more info from me to try to help, just say so!
    Problem 1:
The optimum setting for my processor is a CPU FSB Clock of 166 Mhz, but I’m only able to reach 160 Mhz. 161-163 will work but is extremely unstable. 164-166 will cause Windows to dump to a blue screen and reboot.
I’ve seen that other people on this board have had similar problems. Note that I’ve set CPU Ratio to Auto and SDRAM Timing to SPD. What could be causing the problem? Could a simple BIOS update help (I’m running the one that was delivered with the motherboard)? How about clearing CMOS?
    Problem 2:
Maybe due to the above problem, I’m also having stability problems when I do get into Windows. On some days it’s fine, other days it’s a mess.
All of a sudden, while surfing the net or gaming, the computer will dump to a blue screen with the info that Windows has been shut down to prevent further damage to the system. One of two error messages will be displayed:
“A thread tried to release a resource it did not own” (more common message) or “IRQL_NOT_LESS_OR_EQUAL” (less common).
The computer will then reboot automatically. It’s really hard to specify when this happens: it could come at any time.
The system I have is the following:
    KT6 Delta (MS-6590) motherboard
    AMD Athlon XP2500+ (1.833 Ghz)
    TwinMOS PC3200 DDR-DIMM (2x256Mb)
    Seagate Barracuda 80Gb S-ATA
My old IDE 12 Gb harddrive
    PowerColor Radeon 9800 Pro 128Mb
    TDK CD-RW (40x/10x/40x)
    Windows XP Professional with Sp1
Have any of you had similar problems? I appreciate any help I can get!!!
    Regards,
    Stefan

judd321: couldn't agree more! Thanx to all the people who post here and try to help out computer illiterate people like myself. Interesting to see that you've had the same problem.
Thought I'd give you an update on my situation. I've done some surfing and gotten some mixed messages. Some say that the included PSU that came with my Chenbro Gaming Bomb (FSP Group 350W, delivers 28A at +3,3V, 30A at +5v and 16A at 12V) is plenty to power a system with my specs. Others, like the good people on this board, claim that 350W just won't cut it.
I've just invested in an Aspire 520W (looks creepy and mod-ish). The dealer claimed that it really does deliver 520W at maximum performance and not just at peak. Before I install it I will try the following just to make sure it's the PSU that's causing me problems:
    1) Confirm that I still cannot boot up with CPU Clock at 166Mhz. If all is still the same, Windows won't even start. If I, by the grace of the good Lord, do get my system running at 166, I'll monitor unwanted reboots. If system is stable, fine. If no:
    2) I'll start by clearing CMOS, with battery and power cord out for at least 10 minutes. Then enter BIOS and run default settings EXCEPT CPU Clock which I'll set to 166Mhz. I'll try to reboot computer to see if this has done the trick. If yes, great. If no, I'll try the same thing but also set memory speed to 333. If that still doesn't work:
    3) Clear CMOS with power cord disconnected. Unplug unneccesary components like CD-ROM, fan (not heatsink  , floppy drive, any USB devices and my old IDE hard drive. Reboot the computer and set CPU Clock at 166. If the system works, it was definitely the PSU since the absence of the disconnected components will have allocated more power to the connected components. If it doesn't work...does anybody want to buy a pretty decent system that doesn't allow for full processor power and experiences frequent, unwanted reboots?
I'll let you know how things work out!

  • HP HDX 16-1010EA: Battery charging and performance problems

    Hi,
Due to my warranty being finished by HP, this place will be the only hope for some problems that I'm having, so please help guys.
    1. I own a personal copy of Windows 7 Pro x64, installed it on a different partition from my Vista x64 that came with my HDX 16. After i updated the drivers, especially the chipset drivers, running on battery with  the balanced profile is like HELL, it's like loading windows 7 on an old 8086 IBM piece, it decreases the performance radically, now it's obvious that the problem is on a driver level but i've updated the chipset for 3 times so far and nothing has changed, i cannot address Intel for this since i have no idea what to tell them, so I'm hoping someone had some similar issues and has a solution for it.
    2. Lately, my battery started to charge very very slow and end the cycle of charge pretty fast, now since i cannot act on the balanced profile (explained above why.) i have to use the high performance one, i know this can reduce the life cycle dramatically, but 30-40 minutes are too LESS for even the high performance profile. AND, i am a very careful notebook owner and i treat it as a baby, i charge it fully, then i unplug it immediately, and don't charge it until it reaches 10%. I also give it an airspray treatment every 2 months so you can imagine, this notebook should run as normal as brand new.
    3. Now this is not a problem, though pure curiosity. I know the HDX 18 has two hard drive ports and it comes with two hard drives. After Intel upgraded from Matrix Storage app to the Rapid Storage Technology one, i have noticed a little extra interface (logical wise) on the output. Now to clear things out, HDX 16 has an interface for the hard drive, another one for the optical drive and an external interface (eSata), if you look clearly in the picture linked below, you'll see another port, a mysterious port:
    http://i46.tinypic.com/x5cw28.jpg
Internal Empty Port, with a SATA Icon on it, is there any chance that the HDX 16 has a spare interface to connect another hard drive??

  • Software upgrade, sync and performance problems.

When upgrading to the new iPhone software 4.0. on my iPhone 3G all my pictures captured on my iPhone during the last year has disappeared.
No backup is available in iTunes and the previous upgrades did NOT delete any content in the iPhone. Why did this change and how do I get the pictures back??
The phone is also gradually getting slow - opening a text message takes 5-8 sec this is also not acceptable.
I am a big Apple fan and has been very happy the last 6 years but the iPhone is currently not a product I would recommend to anyone. I also don't recommend SW upgrading since performance keeps going down with the introduction of fancy new features.
    Any help/suggestions is appreciated, thanks

Not sure why the photos in the Camera Roll are not included with your iPhone's backup, which has nothing to do with installing the firmware update. This means something was wrong with the backup for your iPhone. I didn't lose any data on my 3G when installing 4.0, but I always import the photos in the Camera Roll especially before installing a firmware update.
Although photos in the Camera Roll are included with the iPhone's backup or should be, so is a significant amount of other data. Photos in the Camera Roll should be imported by your computer as with any other digital camera. Not a good idea to depend on your iPhone's backup and your iPhone alone for this data which can be lost or stolen. I've always imported photos from every digital camera I've used and the same with my iPhone's digital camera, which should be treated the same as any other digital camera for a number of reasons.
Contacts are also included with your iPhone's backup or should be, but contacts are designed to be synced with a supported address book application on your computer and should be available on your computer with or without an iPhone or with or without any cell phone. I've helped countless people here who manually enter all contacts on their cell phone and depend on their cell phone alone for this important data, which can be lost or stolen.
Problems like this certainly did exist a few years back. Hardware can fail, data transfer can fail or get corrupted, and user error or not taking precaution when important data is involved. There are many more people here that don't maintain a backup for any important data on their computer's hard drive than do.
Losing important data is painful, but painful lessons are usually learned the best. Things can and do go wrong. For future reference, import the photos in the Camera Roll ASAP, and especially before installing a major firmware update when the transfer of an existing backup is involved.

  • Massive artifacts, redraw and performance problems: xorg 1.8 and Intel

    Hi there.
Since the update to xorg-server 1.8 my intel GMA950 powered lap top is seriously acting up.
*Performance has dropped significantly, Games or compiz run slower than before
*Font drawing is sometimes garbled, sometimes not
*Some windows or parts of windows (sometimes only the decorations) show artifacts
*Drawing of fonts while typing is delayed by 1 or more characters sometimes
It might be related to this bug or the problem described in this thread.
    Just look at this screenshot:
I tired moving xorg.conf, I tried running compiz with --indirect-rendering, I tried all kinds of options in xorg.conf and all but it just remains broken like this. Has anyone got similar problems and a solution?
Last edited by Shapeshifter (2010-06-28 15:07:21)

I've been having the same issue but not to the extent of the OP.
I read the man for intel
    man intel
and added these three lines to my xorg.conf
    Option "XvPreferOverlay" "false"
    Option "SwapbuffersWait" "false"
    Option "Tiling" "false" #{edit: after doing some testing I found tiling made no differnece so I ended up commenting it out}
The first option I added because the man says
    The  overlay
behaves  incorrectly  in  the  presence of compositing, but some
prefer it due to it syncing to vblank in  the  absence  of  com‐
                  positing
I use compiz ergo i have compositing and I noticed my video tearing and skipping sometimes. Seems to work fine now (more testing will be required)
The second option I added because the man says
Note that when enabled, this option can
adversely affect the framerate of applications that render
frames at less than refresh rate.
I have a hunch compiz probably isn't rendering at the refresh rate and also video would be rendered at less than my vert refresh of 60. So I disabled it.
The third and last option I added was because the man says
In most cases (especially for complex rendering),
    tiling dramatically improves performance.
    Well this may be a case where it doesn't and the posters above have noticed improvements.  {edit: after doing some testing I found this made no differnece so I ended up commenting it out}
In the end moving windows around the screen do not tear anymore and my video is smoother. I enabled all three at once so it maybe that one or a combination of 2 or possibly all 3 resulted in change. I suspect  I will do some more testing but hopefully this is a place to start fro some of you having this issue.

  • Major crashing and performance problems, apparently since 10.6.1

    Hi there
Since I updated to 10.6.1, I've had significant problems with my black MacBook, Core 2 Duo 2.16Ghz. I get the spinning beach ball holding me up all the time (twice since I've started typing this message), the fan goes crazy, applications just crash and hang, and on a few occasions the whole window server has just crashed, killing all my apps and dumping me out at a login prompt.
I've looked in the console and seen a variety of messages, some related to Windowserver, e.g.:
[598] kCGErrorIllegalArgument: _CGXMapShmemInternal : Invalid shared memory id
[112] kCGErrorIllegalArgument: CGXSetWindowListTags: Operation on a window 0x2 not owned by caller (PID 179)
[112] kCGErrorIllegalArgument: CGXSetWindowListTags: Operation on a window 0x7 not owned by caller loginwindow
    some related to I/O:
    kernel disk0s2: I/O error.
and of course the latter make me think about disk problems. However the disk is only 6 months old, I replaced the one that came with the computer which died in March, and this one's been perfectly alright up until now, so I've checked the disk with Disk Utility and /sbin/fsck -fy in single user mode, and both say there's nothing wrong with it. I have an external LaCie 2Big RAID attached by Firewire which is my TimeMachine volume, and I've run Disk Utility against that and again, it says there's no problem.
I've rebooted in safe mode, single user mode, verbose mode, all of it says everything's fine. I've switched off Spotlight indexing, as I thought it might be that. I'm getting nowhere - haven't had a window server crash for a couple of days, but applications randomly take ages to start, cursors just hang waiting on the beach ball, and sometimes if I leave Activity Monitor running I see applications just go red "not responding" for a while and then just start responding again later, with nothing in the system/console/'all messages' log to indicate there was ever a problem.
I've got 168.3GB free space out of 250GB available on the boot disk; Activity Monitor says 1.17GB free RAM. 'top' says PhysMem: 1247M free. I've checked the memory in single user mode by running '/usr/bin/memtest all 20' and it says everything's fine.
There are a variety of other error messages, lots of warning to do with multiple kernel dependencies which I think are probably deprecation warnings, but a lot of which I don't know much detail about. The point is, none of this was happening before I upgraded to 10.6.1, and now that I have, it's making my computer nigh on unusable at times.
    Anyone have any ideas?
    Cheers,
    Igor

Hi again. Right, Thursday night it crashed, just hanging there, so I force-restarted with the power button, and it wouldn't boot. disk0s2: I/O error in console. Great, dead disk, I think; well, a shame that neither Disk Utility nor fsck told me anything about it, but at least that explains things.
So today I went out and bought a Seagate Momentus 500GB 7200rpm 2.5" SATA disk, took it home, plugged it in, partitioned the disk, did a restore from Time Machine, and pressed "Restart from restored system". Bang. Nothing. Option-restart: only shows SL install DVD. Console: nothing. Reboot into installer, doesn't even show Seagate in Disk Utility. Swap old disk back in, same as before, disk I/O error. Try new one again, nothing. Start thinking I might be in for a big bill or a new Mac, try once more, boots fine. All working fine except Mail which gives me this:
"You can't use this version of Mail with this version of Mac OS X
You have Mail version 4.1 (1076/1075.2). It can't be used on Mac OS X Version 10.6.1 (Build 10B504). For more information, click the Help button."
    So:
    a) What might be up with the computer that it sometimes can't see the HD? I'm trying to make sure the disk is securely seated, but it's as far as I can see identical in shape to the last one, with which I carted the Mac around over the last few months without any such problems. Connections? Motherboard? SATA bus? How can I find out? This is going to be expensive, isn't it?
    b) In the meantime, while I have the thing booted and working, how do I fix the above? I simply restored the whole system from a Time Machine backup about 4 hours before the computer died the other night, didn't do anything funny at all: how can the versions be wrong? Software Update says I have no updates necessary, where do I find an installer?
    Cheers

  • Linkage and performance problems with "Additional source folders"

    Hello
There seems to be a some problems when using "additional source folders" in Flash Builder 4.5 and 4.5.1 (links to folders outside a project see pic below). Hopefully I'm doing something wrong and some kind soul could point it out.
I have a library project which is referenced from a Flex application. When I try to use the tools to go to any of the declarations in the library project from the flex application project, I get a "Code Navigation Error" insetad of seeing the source code in the library project:
Typeing with code completion turned on is super-duper slow, characters take around half a second to appear.
What would really help is to know if there's a way to tell Flash Builder how to locate the source files for library swc's, and if there was a way to improve the performance of the text editor.

    Thanks for replying.
I didn't specifically embed the source. How would one do that? I tried the "-debug" additional compiler option (from here  http://help.adobe.com/en_US/flex/using/WS2db454920e96a9e51e63e3d11c0bf69084-7ad5.html) but I get an error saying "Option -debug cannot be used when compiling in Flash Builder":
I also did add the common swc into the libraries path using "Add project" in the Flex Application project:
The linked source folders are in the library project, however I still get the same problem wven when not using linkled source folders so I don't think that is the cause:

  • Startup and performance problems

    Hi Community!
First of all, i don't expect to get a good answer to this. I've search for three days for these specific errors, and thought i should share my experiences with other users with similiar problems. I ran Apple Hardware Diagnostics and finally got some sort of clue as to whats wrong with my computer. The exact error code i received was: 4SNS / 1 / 40000000 : IC0C - 51.511. However the only information i've been able to find about that specific error code (IC0C) was: "Current Sensor on CPU 0". And just for the fun of it, iStat Pro reports that the processor uses 51.51A wich to me sounds really high, but i havn't found any relevant info about how many amps this processor is supposed to use.
    My Specs:
    MacBook Pro (6.2) mid-2010 edition.
    15" antiglare highres
    8GB Ram
    i7-620m 2.66Ghz
    7200rpm 512GB harddrive
    Mac OS X 10.6.7
    Boot ROM Version:          MBP61.0057.B0C
    SMC Version (system):          1.58f16
    My issues:
I have a couple of really annoying problems with this computer:
First of all the most recent issue, it wont start! Or at least it wont boot unless i press and hold the power button for several seconds until the led indicator blinks rapidly. If i've put it to sleep, when i wake it up it will show the desktop for 1-2 seconds, then it will just die. It wont matter if i have it plugged in with the power cord or running on battery.
My second issue is its poor performance, it's about less than a third as fast as it should be when compared to a friends almost identical computer (the only difference is the screen and the harddrive). And by this i mean pure computing power. http://db.xbench.com/merge.xhtml?doc1=521138&doc2=521137 yeah i know, xbench is a bit long in the tooth but when two nearly identical computers differ that much in the same test something is clearly wrong.
Also as a bonus to the strange behaviours above, my fans sometimes start spinning at 6000rpm and gets stuck there until i shut down the computer or put it to sleep. Neither iStat Pro or SMCFanControl can lower the speed of the fans when they've started running at that speed. And there seems to be no reason for them to run that high as the temperature is below 40C on cpu and around 50C on the gpu. However i've seen a lot of posts about this specific issue, and there was some talk about the power supply sensor being out of whack.
    What i've tried:
    Reset SMC several times
    Reset PRAM several times
Tried to boot from another harddrive
Completely erased harddrive and reinstalled a fresh copy of OS X
Apple Hardware Diagnostics (And finally got something to indicate an error)
Tried reinstalling EFI firmware, but it won't let me (Unsupported Hardware....)
Nothing has worked so far. I will return this computer as soon as it's possible. But i'm too curious as to what that error really means and can that error really be the root cause of my problems? Or rather is the SMC/mainboard faulty?
    Sincerly
    Fredrik

I think 4SNS might not always be temperature sensors, i think it can be any of the values you can derive from the SMC.
In this case i'm most interested in this specific error code: IC0C (Current Sensor on CPU 0). I'm guessing there's some secrecy going around Apples error codes and therefore there might not be a good answer to this
If i might throw out an uneducated guess, it could be that the voltage/amperage sensor on CPU 0 reports an invalid value and therefore the computer won't start normally to protect itself in case the amperage would be too high.
The reason i ask, is because there might be others out there with this specific error and symptoms that's also curious as to what the cause might be. The correct solution for the problem however is to send it in of course
So i will send the computer a.s.a.p as you suggest Michael.

  • ICal sudden extreme lag and eating up all memory in week mode

This was intented to be a question but I found out the answer by the time I finished writing it so if someone out there gets the same problem, I hope this can help them.
I use iStudiez for all my school stuff so I didn't use iCal a lot recently. However, when opening it today, everytime I tried changing weeks in week mode, iCal would lag badly and stop responding for several seconds, eating all the available RAM in the process. I tried to force quit, but the problem reappeared every time.
Turns out iCal doesn't seem to handle "long" events very well. I had a "Nothing" event starting on December 21st, 2012 and ending several years later, and deleting it caused the lagging to stop. I guess iCal tries to load the whole event when it appears in the week view.
Hope this post helps someone or alerts Apple to issue a fix. (I use the latest version of iCal on the latest build of OSX, which as of today is iCal 6.0 on OS X 10.8.2)

  • Timeouts and performance problems

    Hi,
I've had Infinity for a couple of months and everything has been OK up to now. Yesterday though there was an orange light on the broadband. OK, just leave it for a bit might sort itself out. Today, back to work ( I work from home a lot) all lights blue away we go. However, the line speed is slower than usual, getting lots of timeouts from my browser and the VPN on the work laptop keeps dropping. All in all, not good. I've checked the logs on the hub and it seems there was an issue with the time server late Saturday night (time syncronization failed). Since then there have been numerous times when the PPOE has failed. The logs also show the following message a few times: (86420.780000) Server URL: https://pbthdm.bt.motive.com; Connecting as user: ACS username.
I'm guessing that the problems today are related to messages in the logs but not sure how.
Any suggestions what is going on? Who do I contact?

I've re-run the speed test. Here they are. Download speedachieved during the test was - 19915 Kbps For your connection, the acceptable range of speedsis 12000-29036 Kbps . Additional Information: IP Profile for your line is -29036 Kbps Upload speed achieved during the test was - 3819 Kbps Additional Information: Upstream Rate IP profile on your line is - 10000 Kbps Although the speed has dropped markedly since Saturday, its the dropouts, the VPN unable to connect and the slow respnses when trying to connect to websites quickly (DNS issue?) that is bothering me. It's not just one website that the problem is with, its any.

  • New SSD installed and Performance Problems

    Greetings all!
I just reinstalled my workstation with a new Intel X25-V SATA solid-state drive 40GB on which I installed only Win7 and CS5 and, with my i7980x processor and 24GB of ram, I was expecting some super crazy performance (my Windows Performance Number is 7,7 out of 7,9 possible) and... my Premiere Pro is now rendering painfully slow... Everything else is fine in the computer...
Real time viewing of the video, when not rendered, is impossible or extremely pixelized (it was just fine before with my HDD).
    Any help is welcome!!
    Thanks,
    Etienne

SSDs make great OS/program drives, but they can be pretty weak for CS5, especially at the price/generation point of Intel's X25-V series. Regarding why are SSDs poor for CS5, it is an issue with slow performance in writing.
Put everything on your HD except "media cache DB" (CS5 projects, media, media cache, output, etc.) and you should be fine. BTW, you have a strong CPU and lots of RAM, so your hardware would be much better balanced if you were to use a total of 4 7200 RPM SATA drives: 2 in RAID 0 for projects and media; 2 in RAID 0 for media cache and render outputs. Check out the "hardware" forum for LOTs of hardware discussion.

  • Display and performance problems

Many times cannot power up my laptop the power light and charging light is on fan is working but screen is off I try always remove the battery and press power switch 40 seconds after screen is displayed many times I found this complaint I need a reason
and 2nd complaint is sometimes screen is display only half page wallpaper is perfect but open any applications page only half page I need a perfect replay 3rd complaint is computer is too slow

I'll answer your third complaint first. Without knowing exactly what model laptop you have and exactly what you are trying to do with it there is no way for anyone to have any idea why it's slow. Heck, we can't even tell if it's actually slow, or if you are trying to do something that the laptop isn't capable of doing, or at least doing well.
I have yet been unable to find a definitive answer to why they sometimes don't turn on fully. That's why I posted the procedure to get past the problem. Only Toshiba and the other manufacturers know what the actual problem is, and I haven't seen them post the solution for it anywhere. It is a common problem in all brands and types of computers though, not just Toshiba's and not just laptops. Desktops also have this problem. The best theory I've run across on why it happens is static electricity buildup on the main circuit boards of a computer causing the problem. The procedure I outlined above drains all of that buildup from the system allowing it to boot again, If you have that problem on a regular basis you might want to check into the electricity source you plug into. I've noticed that people who live in mobile homes (with metal outside walls( and people who live in homes with aluminum siding tend to have this problem more than people who live elsewhere. I used to have to disconnect the mobile home I lived in from the power grid a couple of times a year to dissipate the static buildup in the building itself otherwise I had static in my telephone, television, and problems booting like you are experiencing,
Since Toshiba support personnel are prohibited from posting in the forums it's doubtful that you'll be able to to get a definitive answer from them without calling them on the telephone and talking to an actual support person. They don't provide actual support any other way. All we have here are end users like yourself doing what they can to help other end users.
Your second issue about only displaying half page has normally been a display driver issue from my experience. Make sure you have the latest display driver for you specific laptop and see if that helps. If that doesn't, you might need to download and install a display driver direct from Intel, MAD/ATI, or nVidia to see if that corrects the problem. Doing that can be tricky and since you didn't bother to identify your specific laptop there is no way for us to know what display chipset you need.
The only other thing that I can think of is that your video subsystem is failing. Either a loose or faulty internal cable, failing display panel, failing display chipset, or some other portion of the subsystem. You could try connecting to an external display the next time you have an issue to see if that works better or not. Otherwise take it to a certified techinician and have it thoroughly checked out.
Also, check the Product Support Link at the top of this page for your specific model. Check the support bulletins for it to see if they list any issues or fixes that might pertain to your situation and model.
If you don't post your COMPLETE model number it's very difficult to assist you. Please try to post in complete sentences with punctuation, capitals, and correct spelling. Toshiba does NOT provide any direct support in these forums. All support is User to User in their spare time.
